I have a small amount of information on John V. McMellin. John V McMellin would have been my great great grandfather and in my collection of descendents I have John V. McMellin married to Sadie Erkenbrack. According to my records they are both burried in Jayton, Kent Co. Texas. The children of John and Sadie are Jessie, William, Birtie,Oliver, Gouch, Inez, Freda, and Josephine or Josie. Josie is my grandmother's mother. I have birthdates and some burrial cities for the majority of those listed. You can email me at linz412@gmail.com

Actually, I don't have anything like that. I have some photos of a young people's get-together at Dickens springs, about 1922 or so, they were older children and young teenagers in very casual attire.
I also have a studio portrait of my grandmother and her 3 very young children, taken late 1911. They were very stylishly dressed.
I will look to see what else I might have. I know I don't have anything from parties, though.

Hi Mary--

Good to hear from you.

Parties outside of Spur might work; it depends upon the occasion. I was trying to get pictures that would show "society" get togethers--especially those which were meant to introduce young men and women to each other. I'm also interested in ladies' fashions. What do you have?

I am looking for any information on a family who was living in Dickens County, Texas in1930. Included in the household were Richard H. Reeder age 48; Rastus Reeder age 17; Loyd Reeder age 13; MindaRobertson age 57; Ed Birchfield age 53; and Nancy E. Birchfield age 37.

Richard H. Reeder was the uncle of Rastus, Loyd, and Nancy E. Reeder Birchfield. Believe Ed Birchfield was probably a husband of Nancy. Minda Robertson may have been grandmother or great grandmother of Rastus and Loyd Reeder. The father of Rastus , Loyd, and Nancy was Stoke or Stokes Reeder. Am especially trying to find where Rastus, Loyd, and Stokes Reeder were in 1920 and the relationship of Minda. Appreciate any information. Shirley Roach King

ALLEN Family History from 200 BC to 2009...From Henry Clay Allen's great-grandson, David Roger "Tex" Allen (1944 - )

Here is a summary of Allen family history 2000 years old, submitted by David Roger Allen (January 18, 1944 New York City USA - ) aka "Tex Allen" (Screen Actors Guild ..SAG..Professional Actor name.

Henry Clay Allen (1857, Wise County, Texas - 1946 New Mexico) was my great-grandfather, his daughter, Etta Anna Allen (Mrs. Otis Joseph Cudd) was my grandmother, and her son, Foy Ray Allen (born Frederick Richard Cudd...he changed his name legally during his adult life to "Allen," his mother's surname, rather than his father's surname...his father was Otis Joseph Cudd [1880-1919]).

A SUMMARY OF ALLEN FAMILY HISTORY FROM 200 BC TO 2009 LEADING TO DAVID ROGER ALLEN, AKA "TEX" ALLEN

(Note: "Tex" was chosen because David Roger Allen is decended from many Texas born Allen family members...his father, Foy Allen [Jan. 6, 1911 Floydata, Texas - June 17, 2003 Parkville (Baltimore) MD USA][born Frederick Richard Allen] was born in Floydata, Floyd County, Texas on January 6, 1911).

-----------------------------------

"ALLEN" is a variant of the surname "ALAN," which is the oldest continuously used surname among European peoples....

The oldest known historical records which describe the ALANS of Russia are the Chronicles Of The Later HAN DYNASTY Of China which recorded contact Chinese travellers had with ALAN tribe members in Russia in about 200 BC....

Shortly afterward, Roman historians Lucan (about 69 AD) and Josephus (about 100 AD) both described the ALAN tribe and the trouble it caused for the Roman Empire trying to expand east into Asia Minor.....

The name ALAN was first used before Roman Empire times and refers to a tribe named the ALAN tribe (later a country with an independent government named ALANIA...the Federal State of ALANIA continues to exist in modern day Russia, located exactly on the Russian - Georgia border in the northern foothills of the Caucasian Mountains) which was located in present day SW Russia between the Black and Caspian Seas, immediately to the north of the Caucasion Mountain Range which connects the Black Sea (to the west) and the Caspian Sea (to the east).......

The Alan tribe in ancient times raised and trained horses for military purposes, and were famous as mounted archers.

They sold military horses to the Chinese cavalry and the Persian and Arabian cavalries in ancient times, and the also fought against the Roman Empire's efforts to expand east into Asia Minor and over the Caspian Mountains into south western (present day) Russia......

The Roman Emperor NERO organized a military effort to defeat the ALANS called the CAUCASIAN EXPEDITION in which Roman Soldiers 6 feet and taller were recruited to fight the famously tall and blue eyed Alan soldiers. NERO'S effort failed.

The ALANS helped conquer and defeat Atilla The Hun in France by joining the Visigoths and the Romans at the Battle Of Champagne in present day France in 451 AD....The ALANS were present at the final defeat of the Roman Empire in 476 AD in which ALANS and VISIGOTHS under Theodoric were victors.....

Some ALANS migrated from Russia west into Europe and many settled in northern France in the Brittany area (located directly under or south of the island of England).....In 1066 AD, decendants of the ALANS under Count Alain du Fergeant of Brittany, a famous horse soldier specialist, joined William The Conqueror in the Battle Of Hastings, and became established in England.....

Count Alain Of Brittany became ALAN, FIRST EARL OF RICHMOND (Yorkshire, England).......I

n the 13th century when surnames came into fashion, the name ALAN became a first name (or Christian name) and the spelling ALLEN came into use as a "last name".......

Tex Allen's direct family ancestry has been traced by professional geneologists from 1460 to the present day (18 generations......

Tex's Allen's oldest officially confirmed (by geneologists) direct ancestor in England was George Allen (1460 - 1540) of Staffordshire England who was born near present day Stafford, England in the Chartley Manor Castle.....

Two direct ancestors of Tex Allen attended Oxford University (both attended Corpus Christi College at Oxford U.) and obtained degrees and became Church of England clerymen....Reverend Doctor Richard Allen III (1572 Lincoln County - 1651 Kent County), who helped translate the King James Bible from ancient languages into English, and his son Reverend Richard Allen IV (1613 Kent County, England - 1690 Virginia USA), who emigrated to America in 1645 and became the first pastor in New Kent County Virginia of St. Peter's (Church Of England) Parish where Martha Washington was later baptised in 1731, and married to Daniel Custis in 1748, then to George Washington in 1759....

Tex Allen's English relatives migrated to America in 1645 (to Virginia, where the family lived for 150 years in New Kent County, Virginia USA) and relocated to Texas USA (Bastrop County, Wise County, Dickens County, and Potter County) in 1832 where the family became famous as horse specialists and breeders (Allen Brothers Horse Farm in Seymour Texas with livery stables in both Wichita Falls TEXAS and Amarillo TEXAS at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries), and the Allens lived until 1928, when Tex Allen's father, Foy Allen (1911 Texas - 2003 Maryland) moved to New York City, where Tex Allen was born........

Foy Allen served as a US Navy Naval Intelligence Archivist in Washington DC during WWII (Bureau Of Naval Records, US Navy Annex, Arlington, VA suburbs of Wash. DC), and after WWII became a licensed Private Investigator in Baltimore MD USA and founded Maryland USA's largest private security firm (Master Security Inc.) in 1957, which continues to operate (2009).....

Foy Allen's obituary appeared in the Baltimore SUN Newspaper on June 20, 2003 and gave details about his colorful and profitable career as a private police specialist.....

Tex Allen's father's family (the Allen family) was entirely English descended, and Tex Allen's mother's family was half English and half German, thus making Tex Allen's ethnic heritage 3/4 English and 1/4 German.

"ALLEN" is a variant of the surname "ALAN," which is the oldest continuously used surname among European peoples....The oldest known historical records which describe the ALANS of Russia are the Chronicles Of The Later HAN DYNASTY Of China which recorded contact Chinese travellers had with ALAN tribe members in Russia in about 200 BC....Shortly afterward, Roman historians Lucan (about 69 AD) and Josephus (about 100 AD) both described the ALAN tribe and the trouble it caused for the Roman Empire trying to expand east into Asia Minor.....The name ALAN was first used before Roman Empire times and refers to a tribe named the ALAN tribe (later a country with an independent government named ALANIA...the Federal State of ALANIA continues to exist in modern day Russia, located exactly on the Russian - Georgia border in the northern foothills of the Caucasian Mountains) which was located in present day SW Russia between the Black and Caspian Seas, immediately to the north of the Caucasion Mountain Range which connects the Black Sea (to the west) and the Caspian Sea (to the east).......The Alan tribe in ancient times raised and trained horses for military purposes, and were famous as mounted archers. They sold military horses to the Chinese cavalry and the Persian and Arabian cavalries in ancient times, and the also fought against the Roman Empire's efforts to expand east into Asia Minor and over the Caspian Mountains into south western (present day) Russia......The Roman Emperor NERO organized a military effort to defeat the ALANS called the CAUCASIAN EXPEDITION in which Roman Soldiers 6 feet and taller were recruited to fight the famously tall and blue eyed Alan soldiers. NERO'S effort failed. The ALANS helped conquer and defeat Atilla The Hun in France by joining the Visigoths and the Romans at the Battle Of Champagne in present day France in 451 AD....The ALANS were present at the final defeat of the Roman Empire in 476 AD in which ALANS and VISIGOTHS under Theodoric were victors.....Some ALANS migrated from Russia west into Europe and many settled in northern France in the Brittany area (located directly under or south of the island of England).....In 1066 AD, decendants of the ALANS under Count Alain du Fergeant of Brittany, a famous horse soldier specialist, joined William The Conqueror in the Battle Of Hastings, and became established in England.....Count Alain Of Brittany became ALAN, FIRST EARL OF RICHMOND (Yorkshire, England).......In the 13th century when surnames came into fashion, the name ALAN became a first name (or Christian name) and the spelling ALLEN came into use as a "last name".......Tex Allen's direct family ancestry has been traced by professional geneologists from 1460 to the present day (18 generations......Tex's Allen's oldest officially confirmed (by geneologists) direct ancestor in England was George Allen (1460 - 1540) of Staffordshire England who was born near present day Stafford, England in the Chartley Manor Castle.....Two direct ancestors of Tex Allen attended Oxford University (both attended Corpus Christi College at Oxford U.) and obtained degrees and became Church of England clerymen....Reverend Doctor Richard Allen III (1572 Lincoln County - 1651 Kent County), who helped translate the King James Bible from ancient languages into English, and his son Reverend Richard Allen IV (1613 Kent County, England - 1690 Virginia USA), who emigrated to America in 1645 and became the first pastor in New Kent County Virginia of St. Peter's (Church Of England) Parish where Martha Washington was later baptised in 1731, and married to Daniel Custis in 1748, then to George Washington in 1759....Tex Allen's English relatives migrated to America in 1645 (to Virginia, where the family lived for 150 years in New Kent County, Virginia USA) and relocated to Texas USA (Bastrop County, Wise County, Dickens County, and Potter County) in 1832 where the family became famous as horse specialists and breeders (Allen Brothers Horse Farm in Seymour Texas with livery stables in both Wichita Falls TEXAS and Amarillo TEXAS at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries), and the Allens lived until 1928, when Tex Allen's father, Foy Allen (1911 Texas - 2003 Maryland) moved to New York City, where Tex Allen was born........Foy Allen served as a US Navy Naval Intelligence Archivist in Washington DC during WWII (Bureau Of Naval Records, US Navy Annex, Arlington, VA suburbs of Wash. DC), and after WWII became a licensed Private Investigator in Baltimore MD USA and founded Maryland USA's largest private security firm (Master Security Inc.) in 1957, which continues to operate (2009).....Foy Allen's obituary appeared in the Baltimore SUN Newspaper on June 20, 2003 and gave details about his colorful and profitable career as a private police specialist.....Tex Allen's father's family (the Allen family) was entirely English descended, and Tex Allen's mother's family was half English and half German, thus making Tex Allen's ethnic heritage 3/4 English and 1/4 German.

I am looking for information on Lillian Long, daughter of Earl Benton Long and sister of Joe Bailey Long. Lillian was born about 1905 in Oklahoma.

I have the obituaries for both Earl and Joe. Earl's says that he had three grandchildren. I have been able to determine that two of them were sons of Joe Bailey Long. The third was probably the child of Lillian, who is not mentioned in either obituary. Can anyone help me find this child? I have no idea who Lillian married.

Also, does anyone know if Earl had a second wife? No wife is mentioned in his obituary. The mother of Lillian and Joe Bailey was Susan Ida Jackson, whose father was my great grandmother's half-brother. Susan died in Crosby County in 1923. She is buried in Hood County, Texas, near her parents and first child who died young.

About a year or so ago I requested information on Willis Rufus Henderson, Sr. who died in 1943 and is buried in Spur Memorial Cemetery. Linda Hughes was kind enough to get the information from the funeral home in Spur and send it to me. I stupidly deleted the e-mail before I recorded the names of his parents. (How embarrassing)....I know the father's name was Sam or Samuel but I can't remember the mother's maiden name. I am wondering if someone would be able to send the information to me again. Thank you.

Ricky Henderson

Teresa,
I looked up Dicken's County death records 1917-1920. Only the last name of Goyne was used. The date of death is the same as you listed so I am assuming it is Elizabeth Jane. From what I have found, she died from Pneumonia. Several people from Dickens County died from Pneumonia/Influenza 1917-1920.

I am trying to find out info on Pearl Murphrey, Don's ex-wife. I need to know her maiden name. I have been told that she was also married to Della's brother, William Arthur Renfro. Do you know if that is true? Any info I can get is great! Thanks, Janet Dane, jrdane@gmail.com

She mentioned that she had a civil war journal from the elder Grace.
I know that not many photos exist of social events of early Spur, but I hope that some of you might have old party or church event social gathering stored somewhere--or even posed pictures of young women and men from the years 1912-1920. I'm trying to create a book that captures the idea of life in early Spur and especially (at this point) the courtship and social entertainments of young people. Picnics, Kodaking trips, and revivals...anywhere young people gathered to meet and court. I've found references in The Texas Spur about members of the following clubs and their activities:

Batchelor Girls
Merry Wives
Bob Whites
Old Maid's (or Old Maid's Thimble)Club

If you have anything more on these groups--Photos or stories--please let me know!

Thanks,
Marcia

I am trying to find out if they are the sons of Albert Neighbors and Sarah Autrey Neighbors.
Yes, they are sons according to the 1870 Census in Bowie County, Tx. >>>>
I am sorry I don't know much about this family. I found her headstone listed on USGenweb.

I would like to find more information on her. I am currently living in Maryland and it will be several years before I can go to Texas to find it myself.

I will gladly return the favor if you need anything from the Maryland/D.C. area.

Here is the information I have on her:

Elizabeth Jane Goyne (maiden name Johnson)
spouse: John Thomas Goyne
Birth date: Jan 10, 1885
Place: Texas
Death: March 31, 1918
Burried in Afton Cemetery (R17)

Teresa

That is how I found his name on the 1910 and 1900 census records.

Also on your website you seem familiar with the sons of Joe Bailey Long. Have you tried to find them to ask if they know about Lillian?

I believe Jennings Humphreys Long lives in Lubbock. I have found a telephone humber for him, but I don't know if it is a current number.

My grandparents were James Reubin E. Lee b. 1886 in Gorman, Texas. He married Lillie Maude Hagins 23 Dec 1898 in Spur, Dickens, TX in 1915. I know the Hagins side of the family but cannot locate anything on him. He also went by R.E. Lee and Reubin E. Lee. They had 7 children who all lived around the Fort Worth, Texas area. My grandfather was said to possibly been adopted by a family named Bond of Buffalo, New York area and the Bond family were in furniture business. I have not been able to make that connection. He was also said to have been a mounted policeman in Waco in the 1920-1930, as well as a Free Mason. Any information you have on him would be helpful. Also If any Hagins family members have any stories about my grandmother Lillie Maude, daughter of Lou Carlisle and Powhatan Elcano "Poet" Hagins of Duck Creek, Dickens, Texas.

Lillian Long, daughter of Early Benton Long; sister of Joe Bailey Long

I have found that Lillian was married to Dewey R. Sullivan. Dewey was born 1 Dec 1900 and died 16 Nov 1940 in Knox County. According to information on his death certificate, he was buried in the Rule Cemetery.

Lillian was born 14 May 1904 amd died 11 Feb 1953 in Dickens County. She, too, was buried in the Rule Cemetery.

A few months ago, someone (right now I don't remember who) told e that Dewey and Lillian were killed in car wreck in the 1940's and that they had a young son who was then adopted by another family. From their death certificates, I now know that at least part of that story was false.

They were listed on the 1930 census in Crosby County, Texas. No children were listed with them. I do not find any children born to either of them on the Texas Birth Index.

I would love an obituary for either Dewey or Lillian. Lillian's grandfather, Jeremiah Jackson, was my great grandmother's half brother.
