Charles Edward Monroe, my great grandfather, lived in Crosby in 1924 when he was arrested for attempted murder of his wife, Ethel Lee Fuller Monroe. I am trying to locate his whereabouts since 1924. He has also lived in Henderson and Van Zandt Counties. Can anyone provide me with information on him? Thank you.

I think the original, which was in the possession of a distant cousin in Oklahoma kind of disentigrated, or maybe she had only the transcribed copy also.
If you send me an email address I will email a Word doc to you.

(Ed) Mabe passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011, at his home.

Mr. Mabe was born May 13, 1924, to Louie and Annie Karr Mabe Sr. in Crosbyton, Texas.

A 1941 graduate of Levelland schools, he worked after school at Wacker Stores and continued there until he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Odessa in 1942. He returned to Levelland and was drafted in 1943. Mr. Mabe served in the U.S. Army at Camp McCain, Miss., and Fort Jackson, S.C. He was deployed to the European front in England and France and was later assigned to General George Patton's 3rd Army. He saw duty in Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and 1945. During his service, Ed Mabe received his battlefield commission of second lieutenant and was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. After V-E Day, he was assigned to occupation duty until July when he left France for Camp Kilmer, N.J. Mr. Mabe was reassigned to the 5th Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., and was later discharged in May 1946. Returning to Levelland at that time, he married Nanny Mae "Sparkye" Redden in November 1946. He started working at the CO-OP Refinery. Shortly, he returned to Wacker Stores and opened a new store in Jal, N.M., in 1948, serving as manager. In 1951, Ed began his career with El Paso Natural Gas and continued until 1986, when he retired from what was then Meridian Oil. He lived in Jal, N.M., Shamrock, Texas, Farmington, N.M., and later Kermit, Texas. He and Sparkye moved back to Levelland in 1999, where they resided until his death. They were longtime members of the Church of Christ.

Mr. Mabe was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, J.R. Mabe; and his favorite sister, Sis (Eleanor) Wolfe. A devoted husband, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sparkye, in January 2011.

Ed leaves behind his daughter, Michelle Mabe of Levelland, Texas; grandchildren Ivan Bridges and his wife, Yvonne, of Odessa, Texas, and Rana Lively and her husband, Mike, of Midland, Texas; and his great-grandson, Austin, of Midland. He also leaves behind his nephew, Doss Mabe, of Pasadena, Calif.; his nieces, JoAnn Gaines of Wichita Falls, Mary Sledge of Warda, Texas, Carole Mabe Williams of Durango, Colo., Nancy Ritchie of Nocona, Texas; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.

There will be a deep void left by this well-respected and kind, much loved man who had a tremendous sense of humor, a genuine persona of humility and a deep abiding love for his family and friends. Interment with military services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011, in City of Levelland Cemetery under the direction of George Price Funeral Home of Levelland. The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Lubbock; Hockley County Meals on Wheels; or the Disabled American Veterans.
Thanks for letting me know. My Mom was born and grew up in Ralls. I don't know which Great Grandparent's quilt this was but my Great Grandparents from Ralls were: Chad & Mamie Gott and W. C. and Minnie Henry. I'm sure the Aycocks were friends of theirs.

The tree does not have Oscar's father listed. However, I believe he was James M. McCall born about 1836 in Fayette County, TN? In 1900 TX-Red River-Precinct 3-District 106-Image 3, Oscar was residing with older brother Edgar S. McCall in household 23. Household 21 was led by James M. McCall of Tennessee. In 1880 MS-Tate-Coldwater-District 183-Image 30, find J. M. McCall's family.

The information may have come from the Eastland County History book, but there is an error. The girl standing at the back is the sister of Mary Ann Stephenson Holleyman; name not known. Mary Olevia is the girl on the far right. David is holding Ellen and Mary Ann is holding Alice. Alonzo and Lula are in the front. Alexander is not in the picture. Can you please make these corrections? Thank you.

Re: Walker / Foster

This is from Estacado Cradle of Culture and Civilization On The Staked Plains Of Texas written by John Cooper Jenkins

SAMUEL M. WALKER FAMILY

Sam Walker and his three brothers and two sisters, Randolph, Walter, Joe, Nancy, and Minnie, lived in Randolph County, West Virginia. He was only ten when the Civil War began and all he really understood about it was the absolute poverty of his and other families. In 1865, at the end of the war, he decided to move west with the flow of immigrants.
Working his way west as a rail splitter and farm hand, Sam arrived in Arkansas. On the Arkansas Delta he met and married Martha (Mattie) Foster. While in Arkansas, they had three children, Mamie, Walter, and Nora. At this time, with his wife's family, he decided to relocate in Denton County, Texas near Sherman.
In 1891, he came to the Staked Plains and settled ten miles southwest of Hank Smith's home. He purchased 160 acres at $2.25 per acre, laid in a garden and built a dugout. He brought along farm animals, tools, fruit trees, grapevines, and enough supplies to last a year. After making arrangements, he met his family late that summer at Childress, the nearest railhead.
The next June, Jewell, his third daughter was born. In order to feed a growing family, he freighted supplies from the railhead, traded for things he needed, worked as a carpenter, and hauled wood from Blanco Canyon. Vera, his last child, was born in January 1895. By the year 1898, he had raised his first cotton crop and hauled the cotton to a gin near Abilene, Texas. He then hauled the cotton bales to Denton. That same year, Sam and a neighbor built an adobe house with a fireplace and a glass window. It was almost destroyed by rain in 1900.
Martha, regrettably, didn't have enough strength for the lonesome Plains and at the age of thirty, she died of dyspepsia on August 2, 1899. Sam never remarried, and raised his five children to adulthood.
In 1908, Sam hired Lon (Bud) Oliver to help design and build a wood frame house where he lived until his death on November 2, 1929. Both Sam and Martha were buried at Estacado.
Mamie Myrtle Walker (deceased) never married. Walter Marvin Walker married Mona Hawkins (both deceased). Nora Lessie Walker married John Coins, they were later divorced (both deceased). Bonnie Jewell Walker married Joe Hawkins (both deceased).
In 1912, Carel K. Wilmeth moved from New Mexico to Crosby County. He rented land one mile west of Sam Walkers farm. C.K. married Vera Walker in 1914 and moved back to New Mexico.
Texas Death Certificates viewable online. Bonnie Jewel Hawkins (1 Jun 1892 - 28 Dec 1969). She was a widow and death occurred in Houston, TX. Parents were Samuel Walker and Mattie Foster per informant, Mrs. Boots Bundick. Joe Henry Hawkins (28 Jan 1896 - 3 Nov 1934). Parents were Edward (Edgar) B. Hawkins of Denton County, TX and Georgia Keller of Kentucky per Mrs. Joe Hawkins. His death occurred in Crosby County. Bonnie's siblings were: Mamie, Walter Marvin, Nora Lessie, and Velon. Her mother must have died prior to 1900? Samuel M. Walker(48) was widowed and head-of-household in Crosby County-Estacade-District 52-Image 3. Sam and the children were still together in 1910 Crosby-Precinct 1-District 33-Image 8. In 1920 Crosby-Precinct 1-District 39-Image 28, Mamie and Sam shared a household. On image 24, J. H. Hawkins(25), Jewel(28), Edward F.(2 11/12), and Mattie J.(1 4/12) were just beginning. Nora Walker had married John Preston Goins of Tennessee but I did not find them in 1920 Crosby County. Walter Marvin Hawkins registered for WWI Draft but I did not find him in 1920/1930 Crosby. In 1930 Crosby-Crosbyton-District 4-Image 21, Jewell Hawkins(37), Edgar F.(13), Mattie J.(11), Sam(8), Alma(6), Freddie(4 2/12), and Ruby(1). Joe H. Hawkins was incarcerated in 1930. Samuel Mack Walker died 27 Oct 1929 per Texas Death Index. Mamie Walker(43) can be found with John P. Goins(41), Nora L.(40), and Samuel P.(18) in 1930 Crosby-Precinct 2-District 5-Image 8.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is an unclaimed marriage certificate?

Would this maybe indicate that two people agreed to get married and in the last hours before the scheduled marriage maybe one of the two parties decided not to get married at the last minute resulting in no marriage.

Or, is a marriage certificate only completed after the actual marriage occurred meaning that the marriage occurred, but that the married couple never picked up the completed marriage certificate.

I would like to correspond with any descendants of Frank L. Grogan and his first wife, "Josie" (maiden name unknown).

Franklin, son of Hiram and America/Amonea Grogan, was born February 23, 1868 and died April 17, 1947 in Crosby County, Tx. Frank is buried with his second wife, Annelle Aynes-Grogan in the Crosbyton Cemetery.

Frank's parents "took in" my g-grandfather, John G. Crowson, in Tarrant County, Texas in the mid/late 1870's when he was orphaned.

We have some photos that MAY/MAY NOT be Grogan family members but we'll never know unless some of the Grogan family can identify them.

I am related. My Granny was Lena Alice Stockton. In that research that guy gave, he failed to list my dad as one of her sons. I know a complete family tree has been done on her family of Stocktons. I believe my dad's cousin, Lisa has it. She is Tiny Stockton's daughter. If you get in touch with me, I can find what you need. thomspontusc@clearwire.net
