I see this is your first posting on a Rootsweb board. I'm "assuming" you were attempting to post on a board supporting the surname of "Crockett," versus a Crockett County message board.

Here is the Crockett surname board:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.crockett/mb.ashx

Hi,

Even though Crockett County was named after The Davy Crockett, he didn't live there. You won't find any original or first source data in Crockett County.

I did find the Donald E. Campton Jr. Family Tree on Ancestry where they talked about Davy and Patterson maybe being brothers. They cite records in a book but at the end of the discussion say that even the heirs are having a difficult time proving they were brothers. That family tree did have good sources which are always clues on where to look for the info. Successful Searching!

Thank you so very much for the information you posted. I feel certain that Houston P. New was a son of Jake M. and Mary Burnettie Porter New. Looking at the picture of the tombstone, I find that it says, "son of J.M. and M.B. New." I had not known of this boy's existence until now. I'm wondering if Mary Burnettie might be buried in the same lot but has no gravestone. Thanks again.

H.
Hi,

Houston P New
Born: Dec 17, 1884
Died: Dec 9, 1899
Buried: Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ozona, Crockett, TX
Source: Cedar Hill Cemetery, www.usgennet.org/usa/tx/county/crockett/cemetery/

The Crockett County Historical Commission, www.crockettcountyhistory.com/ is in charge of all cemetery indexes but there seems to be few cemeteries in this county since Ozona is the only town.

I also found the Lovell/Kochersperger&Reynolds/New family tree, ancestry.com. They show that Mary Burnette Porter New died 1900 in Texas with no source.

Most larger public libraries provide free access to ancestry if you have a local library card. Thought you might want to contact the owner of the tree.

I'd contact the Historical Society and ask if they have any lone graves or graves on ranches in the county that haven't been published on the internet. Mary isn't listed in findagrave.com either.

I looked up the obituaries published online for this county but didn't find Mary. The county doesn't have a genealogical society (or one I could find). You might want to contact the Crockett Public Library, 325-392-3565, open M and Th 9-9, T, W & F 9-6 and closed Sat & Sun and see if they look up local obituaries. The Ozona Stockman started in 1892.

Another possible source for Mary's death info is the Crockett County Clerk, www.co.crockett.tx.us/ips/cms/County_Officials/countyClerk.h.... Generally they have death records. Successul Searching!

I've always been told that I'm a descendant of "THE" Davy Crockett's brother, Patterson. I have some decent research back to Patterson and his wife Nancy, but I can't find anything concrete on whether or not he really is the son of John C. Crockett and Rebecca Sullivan Hawkins. All of the stuff on Ancestry just sources other people on Ancestry...I need some hard data. Can anyone help?

Seeking any information about the family of Jake M. New and his wife Mary Burnettie (Nettie) Porter New. This family is on the 1880 U.S. Census of Goliad County, Texas. Jake and three children, Scott, Earnest and Jessie (female) are on the 1900 U.S. Census of Crockett County. Nettie must have died sometime between August 1892 when her youngest child, Jessie was born and 22 June 1900, the date of the 1900 Census. Does anyone know of a New burial in any of the cemeteries in Crockett County? Nettie was a sister of my great great grandfather, William S. Porter. I have a lot of Porter family history and am willing to share. I may be contacted here or at h.martin.soward@sbcglobal.net
H.
The town of Crockett is in Houston County, not Crockett County. Crockett County is in West Texas while Crockett, Texas is in East Texas. In 1854 there were only Indians and rattlesnakes in what would become Crockett County which did not become a county until about 1892.

Hi Mildred! Joseph was my 4th great grandfather! I am a descendant of Charles and Caroline Martin. If you went to see their graves, you were within 2 or 3 miles of my house! I live on part of the old Martin place, and can almost see the house Grandpa William and Granny Carmelita lived in, in later years, from here! Please email me! I have lots and lots of information including some old Civil War letters that Granpa William, Granny Carmelita and her son, Joseph Bean wrote back and forth during the war. Who are you a descendant of? I have only located one descendant of Andrew, and have not been able to locate any of George's family.
My email address is: serenaakeech@aol.com
I am very excited to hear from you! There is a book you may want to get if you are interested in further research. It is "Genealogy of McCasland (McCaslin/McCausland/McCauslin/McCashland) by Thesta Kennedy Scogland. This has much info. that may help you. I just wish I could get enough info. about my g-grandfather to know where to start! Thanks, again.

I appreciate the information. Since I know so little myself, I don't know if there is a connection. The only grain of information I know about the McCauslin's was that my grandmother's daddy, William McCauslin, had a brother who was evidently well known for horse riding. He was supposed to have had many trophies for this. Also, my grandmother received notice back in late 1940s or early 50s that she was the heir to property in Crockett, Texas. Since, however, she would have had to pay the back taxes on the property, she never did anything about it. I know my grandmother talked of coming into Texas by covered wagon from somewhere up north. What doesn't make since is that her twin brother's family said that he had been born in Crockett, Texas. I can't see how these stories could both be correct. I will keep you info. and notify you if I ever get any further (I've been trying for years!). Thanks, again.
