Update: I was able to have a student researcher at a Texas University locate TJ's obituary for me. I can now say for sure that the death certificate belongs to him.

However, it would still be wonderful to see a picture of his grave in Paint Rock Cemetery! I have the location of it within the cemetery, as well. Thank you!

Brandon L.
bdloveall@gmail.com

T. J. Coleman: Obituary Look-Up?

Hello!
There has been a mystery in my family surrounding my 3rd great grandpa, Thomas Jefferson Coleman. He apparently left Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma after 1920 to "run a dance hall in Texas" (or so I've been told).
So, after searching around, I found a T. J. Coleman death certificate in this county. This could be a break through! My great grandma tells me he did go by "T.J." so this could be him. Anyway, the certificate lists the death date as June 16th, 1946 and says that he is buried in Paint Rock Cemetery.
I will be so grateful to see an obituary for this person if it can be found. Could anyone look for me? (I live too far away...Oregon!).

-Brandon L.

Please rethink Mary Whitney as, identified in 1910 Concho, Walter Belk's mom? I admire your research and the smooth manner in which you connect dots. However I believe this is off-target? From an emotional point-of-view, surely the newly-wed Walter would have introduced his bride to family? Hopefully, Gracie would not have forgotten her mother-in-law's name? In addition, the family tree on rootsweb identifies Mary's surname as Whitney. That is not supported by death certificates for Tom O. Morris (25 Aug 1897 - 19 Jun 1961) and Delbert Lee Morris (19 Sep 1900 - 19 Sep 1961).

The Belks family tree that I was talking about was not of Belks from Bowie County.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=Search&am...

The tree said there were four children of Noble Ellis Belk and Mary Whitney: 1) Walter Alvin Belk, 2) Lucy Belk, 3) Etta Belk, and 4) Myrtle Belk.

I find Mary Morris on the 1910 census of Concho County, Texas. She has five children. One of them is a Myrtle L Morris. Walter Belk is in Concho County in 1910. They have him as Alvon Belk. He is in Archer County, Texas, in 1930.

I chose to disregard that family tree 'cause those Belks were in Bowie County, continuously, as early as 1880. Walter's death certificate indicates birth in Williamson and he's not part of that family's 1900 Bowie County census.

According to the death certificate of Walter Alvin Belk, his father was Noble Ellis or Ellis Noble Belk. I found on a family tree that his mother supposedly was Mary Whitney. The father died young and Mary married a W. H. Morris around 1897. I thought I had found a cemetery record for Noble Ellis Belk in Williamson County, Texas; but according to the family history cite there were children born after that death date.

N. E. Belk

Birth: Jan. 3, 1862
Death: Oct. 22, 1886

A loved one has gone from our circle,
On earth we shall meet him no more.
He has gone to his home in Heaven,
And all his afflictions are o'er.

Burial:
Donaho Cemetery
Jarrell
Williamson County
Texas, USA

Created by: John Christeson
Record added: May 16, 2010
Find A Grave Memorial# 52448395

Walter Alvin Belk and his wife are buried in Loveless Cemetery in Concho County, Texas.

Okay! the following is a free site for access to "permitted" Texas Death Certificates: https://www.familysearch.org/s/search/index/record-search-ad... You'll have to designate a user name and password when prompted. Ask the system to remember same and future logins can be accelerated simply by clicking in the user name box (provided you use the same computer). Lookup death certificates for: Gracie Gertrude Belk (27 May 1890 - 21 Jul 1964), Walter Alvin Belk (11 Apr 1866 - 3 Feb 1950), and Mayme Ruth Belk (11 Oct 1913 - 6 Sep 1923). Gracie's parents were Elijah Theodore Young and Laura Moody. They are relatively easy to trace. Walter's death certificate, witnessed by Gracie, indicates his father was Noble Ellis Belk of Alabama and unknown mother. I have not found Noble or Walter prior to 1910! His certificate also indicates he was born in Cornhill, Williamson County, TX. Lots of Belks in 1900 Williamson, but the search engine does not recognize Walter and/or Noble? If you have access to ancestry.com, find Gracie with parents/siblings in 1900 Caldwell-Precinct 2-District 119-Images 22 & 23. Search for Theodore Young born 1857 in Texas. In 1910 Concho-Precinct 4-District 29-Image 21, again search for Theodore Young. Find his family in household #166. Neighbors in household #164 are Alvan[sic] Belk(24), Grace(20), and Lola P.(4/12). In 1920 Archer-Precinct 2-District 3-Image 4, search for W. A. Belk. In 1930 Archer-Precinct 1-District 2-Image 6, search for Walter A. Belk. From Texas' Birth Index, I've found registrations for: Lola Pauline Belk and George Calvin McGuffin, Syble Alvinia Belk and George Richard Stoepler, Bessemae Belk and (1) Homer Roy Vallandingham plus (2) Thomas Henry Stewart, and ?Doile Dewitt Belk and Daisy Opal Martin. The only other significant document is Walter's WWI Draft Reghistration in Archer County. His surname misinterpreted as "Beek". That's it! Difficult to understand the lack of info on Walter and his family prior to 1910? Gracie witnessed his death certificate but didn't know her mother-in-law's name?

Yes, able to research "availble" records! I emphasize available 'cause he's difficult to locate prior to marrying Grace Gertrude Young. There are online death certificates for Walter and Grace viewable on the "betasearch" site of familysearch.org. Both died in Tom Green County. I'm currently away from home and without access to my research notes. Relying on memory that is limited by CRS (Can't Remember S--t)

Challenge request: William J. Lackey and wife Nancy (Nicie) Smith

Here is a real puzzler I want to find out about. The parents of Nancy Smith Lackey were Samuel Smith (1797 GA -> MS -> LA -> ? in 1866) and Elizabeth Freeman Smith (1805->SC ->MS ->? in 1866) My husband is descended from that Smith line and where the Samuel Smith's went in 1866 had always been the brick wall (as well as going back farther along that male line). Okay, I discovered by reading church records from Louisiana that in 1866 they requested a letter of membership. Since they were members in good standing and the daughter (Nancy) and son in law (William J. Lackey) also requested letters, I decided this meant that the families decided to emigrate--but where?

The Lackey search led me to discover that Elizabeth Freeman was a member of their household in Williamson county TX in 1870. Samuel Smith not listed, so we assume he died there. Then, the family moved between 1870 and 1880 to Tom Green county. I found William J. Lackey and wife Nancy and family in the 1880 census but not Elizabeth. Did she die or go to live with someone else? I believe Samuel and Elizabeth are buried in Williamson county, but have not found obituaries or cemetery records. Because they were very involved in Baptist church before moving, I assume they would join a Baptist church in new home also, but, no records. We believe some descendents still live in Tom Green, Lavaca and Concho county.

So, the call is going out to the Lackey clan! I have a tremendous amount of information about the Smith side of our family and would be delighted both to share it and to welcome newly found cousins. Anybody out there know the descendents of William J. and Nancy Smith Lackey? I do have some information about their descendents, but have not been able to find living descendents. If you know anyone or have information, please respond!
Nope! Nope! Nope! Joseph Bruce Wade (24 Jul 1882 - 17 Mar 1956) was son of Isham Fielding Wade and Lou Freeman. Son and parents were born in Tennessee. Joseph, an attorney in Fort Worth, was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery of that city. Mrs. J. B. Wade was the informant. Alice Norman Wade (11 Mar 1883 - 3 Apr 1967) was born in Paint Rock, TX to John Norman and Margaret Watt. Alice died in Amarillo, TX but her permanent address was in San Angelo, TX. Mrs. Jack W. Miller, daughter Mary Lou, was the informant. Alice was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery (Fort Worth) also. Mary Lou (Wade) Miller and Jack Wilson Miller both died in Potter County 1 Aug 1990 and 1 Jul 1994, respectively. Ada C. (Norman) Waide (6 Oct 1879 - 21 Jul 1975) was born in Arkansas and died in Ballinger, TX. She and Mary Alice (Norman) Wade shared parents. Ada was buried in Paint Rock Cemetery per her niece, Mrs. W. F. Houston. Ada's husband Jerome A. Waide (22 Mar 1874 - 26 Oct 1962) preceded her in death. He, too, was born in Arkansas and died in Ballinger, TX. The couple probably were not acquainted in Arkansas? Ada was born in Ouachita County close to the border of eastern Texas. Jerome was born in Woodruff County close to the border of western Tennessee. Jerome Waide's parents were William Sherwood Wade of KY and Emma Postell Riddle of NC. The Norman sisters, and spouses, death certificates are online. I am not related to any surname mentioned.

Was his middle name also Lemuel. I found an Alfred Lynn Penland.

Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
about Alfred Lamud Penland
Name: Alfred Lamud Penland
Death Date: 2 Jun 1929
Death County: Eastland
Certificate: 29914

(I looked at the originial. The middle name is is not clear, but I could make out that it was Lemuel, instead of Lamud.)

Shell L Penland is found as a patient at that state mental institute in Cherokee County on the 1930 census. She is also in Bandera County with her brother on the 1930 census.

There were Holloway famiies living in Concho County in 1910, 1920 and 1930. I am especially looking for Homer Holloway, son of Frank and Lola Holloway. By 1920, Homer was living with his siblings with Uncle Thomas. H.F. Holloway and Cynthia (Synthia) Blackman had two children in Concho, one in 1930 and the other in 1933. I would appreciate any information on any of these famiies.

Thank you Faye. I'd been contacted that Eno's buried at Eola, didn't know he died at Tom Green Co. Both children Eno Jr and Annibell are with the widow 1920 at Foard Co. I will check on Julia going to OK, it's possible.

I checked ancestry.com for this family. I found Eno died in Tom Green County 8 Apr 1911. His daughter Annibelle is probably the one born in Concho County 19 September 1910. You might check the courthouse for an amended birth certificate since this one didn't have a name- just Eno, Inf. of. If there isn't one then the chances that she lived to maturity aren't very good, I'd say. Also check the Family Trees at ancestry. There is one that says Julia died in Oklahoma. Perhaps you could email that person for more information.
Faye Elder, Concho County Coordinator

Julia CADWELL BOARDMAN may be buried somewhere in Concho County, my best guess. Husband Philo died probably at Cooke Co before 1900, then she moved to Concho with a son & his family - it's the last I saw of her or son Eno. Annie (Ennis I think) showed up 1920 widowed at Foard Co living with her brother, and one more child born about 1911.

1910 Justice Precinct 2, Concho, Texas;
Roll: T624_1541; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 27; Image: 661
3 May
BOARDMAN Eno 48 m10 MN NY PA livestock farmer
Anna 25 m10 4/4 AL AL TX
Julia 9, Buster 5, Eno 4 f, Ike? 3 m, TX
Julia Ann 77 wid mother PA CT CT
Annas?
