The story came from Captain John M. Elkins, Minuteman, Ranger, Sheriff, and rancher. He wrote a book in 1908 titled Life on the Texas Frontier for family and friends and never sold to the public. I obtained a copy of the original typed manuscript, edited it, and Chuck Parsons wrote the Foreword and I wrote an introduction. I added six photos and did a name index. I designed the cover and the title is "Life on the Texas Frontier, 1855-1880; Texas Ranger Tales told by those who served with Capt. Elkins.
Then in 1929 Capt. Elkins allowed Frank McCarty to do a book titled "Indian Fighting on the Texas Frontier. A completely different book but with many of the stories. In 2000, Ron Henderson and Chris Elkins did a reprint of the 1929 book (sold out) and I am in the process of doing a double book with both reprints.
Those interested in my reprint of 1908 can obtain from Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Book store or contact me for a signed copy via mail.
