Note for the record: When John M. Elkins wrote his book in 1908 he indicated he was the first "Official" Sheriff of Coleman County, Texas. That was in error due to his age or ?
John M. Elkins was born in Illinois, Dec. 1842 and came to TX in a wagon train with Elkins, Lowrance, Harrison Brown, and others. They went to Paker County 1855 and remained there for a while.
John was educated and a respected leader. He was elected Captain of Frontier Rangers and fought against Indian Depredations!
His brother George Kindred "Uncle Kin" rode on many a scout with John. He moved to Camp Colorado and opened a trading post.
He published a book in 1908 titled "Life on the Texas Frontier". I think he only had copies made for family and friends. That book is extremely rare and cannot be found for sale at any price! However, it's availabe for $34.00 as a reprint from Amazon.com.
In 1929, Frank McCarty, with the help of Elkins, rewrote the book. He deleted a lot from the original and retitled it "Indian Fighting on the Texas Frontier". That one can be found sometimes at around $200.00.
We have published a "Reprint" of the ORIGINAL BOOK which to our knowledge has not been offered for sale by anyone nor can one be located.
Some of the information Captain Elkins wrote about Coleman County was not historically accurate. However, most of the story are accurate.
Additional information welcomed.
