My grandfather Rev. C.E. Hill was the pastor at Friendship and Newport Churches - does anyone have any information when and who build the Friendship Church? My grandparents are buried at the Friendship Cemetery - as I recall the Friendship Church was at the end of road going east. Recently, I received a land map for Clay Co. dated 1927 and the name William Hill is shown to own a plot near the church. Just wondering if the church was build on the land my great grandfather used to own? Any information would be appreciated.

Many thanks -

Tom Henderson

I'm trying to find the final resting place of my great grandmother Willie Mae Milburn. We be believe she died 18 February 1916 of Tuberculosis in Henrietta, but I have been unable to locate where she is buried. Her husband David Milburn only survived her by 21 months before he died as a result of track laying accident while working for the railroad. This left my grandfather an orphan before age 7. It would mean a great deal if I could find her.

Bellevue is such a small town and I am sure that everyone knows everyone else. I am looking for a living descendant of Bob Fellows from Wichita Falls. If you know the last name, please e mail me at neatstuffgifts@aol.com
I will tell the first name if you think you can help me. Bob Fellows was a police officer in Wichita Falls who was killed in the line of duty in 1968. His son would be in his 40's.
I am trying to contact him to see if he has any photos of his father for a tribute of fallen officers on Sept. 11, 2010.
Thanks for any help!
My dad was recently doing some research about this murder, as it is in our family history....he came across a book about mysterious murders in Texas with some details. Here is an excerpt about Ira Black and his family, including the location of his parents' graves:

"Ira Black was born March 1893 as was his twin sister Ora. The Black family lived in Sunset, Montague County, Texas from 1900 to about 1920 then moved to Petrolia, Clay County, Texas. Ira died July 17, 1913 and his place of burial is unknown. Ira was the son of Mark D. Black born
March 20, 1850 and died May 2, 1931 and Mary Frances Clymore Black born March 1856 and died November 11, 1930. Both of his parents are buried in the Benvanue Cemetery in Clay County, Texas. Ira had siblings Mandy born April 1886, Arlander born June 1888, Ophelia born August 1890, Myrtle
born September 1895 who married William Carter, Mark born July 18, 1897 or 1899 and Esquiel born January 21, 1900."

A cemetery association board member Mike Castle checks on the cemetery regularly and the Odells mow and do general maintenance. If a cemetery plot is inside a curbing or fence then it is the families responsibility to care for the grave sites. Are you concerned about the upkeep or are you looking for a certain gravesite? Depending on your need as to who you will contact. To purchase a grave site you would contact Mrs. Threadgill, Let me know your concerns and I will email names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. for the person you need to contact. Nice to correspoond with you. I grew up visiting with the Copelands and loved Claria's cherry lemonaid. Ace Lou and myself played together many a summre afternoon.

Thanks for your note. Jessie Smith was my mother's first cousin. His father and my grandmother were brother & sister. Jessie from time to time lived with my grandparents, Katie and Charlie Simmons. As an adult he married Bunton Haddley and they had one daughter Josephine. The daughter now lives in Kansas. Jessie and Bunton divorced. Later in life he married a woman from Wichita Falls, TX. whose first name was Zola. Sorry, I don't remember Zola's last name. Jessie and his brother Laud Smith owned a Fina gas station in Wichita Falls for many years and they maintained ranch land in and around Shannon, TX. Jessie is buried in the Smith family plot in the Southeast corner of Shannon Cemetery by his sister Ophelia, father and mother.

Laud and his family lived in Wichita Falls, TX., near Jessie. Laud and his wife died a few years ago and they are buried in Wichita Falls. Laud and his wife had three daughters and two of them currently live in Wichita Falls and I believe one lives in the Waco area. I grew up playing with the Smith girls. Often times as a child Jessie would take Linda (Laud's youngest) my brother and my self fishing. After catching a few small fish he would build a fire, tell us he was frying up our fish, through the fish back and give us fish sticks. Our fishing trips were always great fun and never harmed many fish. I am glad to share any information I have about my mother's family. In fact I may have some pictures of Jessie as a child and his famly.

I remember the McLaughlin family that lived in Shannon. I personally can't tell you much about the McLaughlins or Blacks'; however, Amanda Weaver Black is one of my cousin's grandmother or great grandmother. My dad's sister married Ira Coody and Amand I believe was his mother. Ira's niece (sister's daughter)could help you with all that sort of information. Her name is Leda Roe and she volunteers lots of time to the Clay County Historical Museum in Henrietta. Perhaps if you call the Museum you could talk with her directly or leave a message and she would return your call.

Now about the Methodist Church. I have no idea about what happened to the church records, but I can tell you where the church was located. The church building has been gone for years. The building was a small one room church with lots of windows, narrow side to side and long with s small tower and bell.

When you go to Shannon you will be traveling on FM 175 and in the center of the village there will be a cross road that says "Old Joy Shannon Rd". Turn North on the Old Joy Shanon Rd, there will be two old white builings and a trailor house on the (East) right side of the road, then an open space, then a house (white or gray in color). The house is where Mrs Copeland and Mrs Mathison lived. Mrs Mathison had her own house, but as she aged she moved in with her daughter Mrs Abbie Copeland. The church and Grannie Matheson's house were located between the trailor house and the Copeland house. The Copeland house is now owned by M Castle. If I remember correctly across the road from Castle's (Copeland) house was the Baptist Church and the McLaughlin house.

Starting at the cross roads again, the bank was on the North West corner of FM175 and Old Joy Shannon Road, Patsy Roper lived in the white house just behind the bank, then the next house was the McLaughlin house, then the Baptist Church. In fact, I believe there was other McLaughlin land along the West side of Old Joy Shannon Rd to the north of the Baptist church. I believe Ed Luig now ownes part of the land. You might want to check with the Clay County Tax office for more information.

After thinking about it for a few minutes one of the Copeland girls might be able to tell you about the Methodist Church records. Sarah Wells (grand daughter of Mrs Mathison) might have all sorts of information. Sarah is married to Granvile Wells and they are listed in the Joy, TX phone book.

By now I'm sure I have you totally confused with my directions. Also, I am unsure of the spelling of Bunton's first name and Granvile Wells' first name. If you are unable to locate Leda Roe at the Historical Society or Sara Wells email me and I will try to contact them. I currently live in the Dallas area, but maintain a place in Clay County.

Sorry, I guess I never really introduced myself. I am Katie, my parents were Jessie Oneita Simmons and John Allen Fry, my grand parents were Katie Elizabeth Smith Simmons and Charles "Charlie" Simmons and great grandparents were Jessie Shelton Smiith and Mary Kiziah "Kizzie" Haney Smith. Also, I never really asked; are you in Texas and are you familiar with Clay County and Shannon?

If you have other questions just drop me a line.
Good Luck, Katie
(1835), Martha (1856), Amanda (1859), California (1863), Loretta (1866), William L. (1870)

1880 Coryell Co., Tx.- William -46-Ala/Sc/Ala; Mary A.- 44-Ms/Va; William L -10- Tx/A;a/Ms; Delcia 7; John W -5; Calumbus-2

1900 Coryell, Tx- Lamiel Stoval-Apr 1870- married 6yrs.-Tx/Ms/Ms; Gertrude-July 1874-Ark/Ga/Ga; Maude-Oct 1896; Lummie-Aug 1898

1900 Coryell Tx- William P. Stovall and Mary Ann Carter Died: 17 Jan 1964 San Antonio, Bexar Co., Tx. ; Buried in Plainview Cemetery, Plainview, Tx.

Gertrude Stovall b. 31 July 1874 Arkansas died Sep. 31, 1912 in San Saba, San Saba Co. Tx. (parents: Joe Cagle and ______ Peeles) No burial place cited.

Ellard Pool Stovall b. 10 Feb 1905 Gatesville, Tx-Widowed- (parents: Wm. Stovall and Gertrude Cagle), Sister: Mrs. Maude Baxter; Died 11 Mar 1968 Bastrop, Texas; Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bastrop Co., Tx.

I don't know if this is the right William L. who was born in 1870, but this is close: William L. Stovall b. 16 May 1868 in Rockdale, Tx- son of William Perry Stovall and Mary Carter- widowed - Died 16 Jan 1958 at Austin, Travis Co.,Tx. Buried at Smithville, Tx. Occupation: Retired.

There is a "Stovall Cemetery". It is in Rusk county, Texas near Turnertown. There is a Memorial marker that is supposed to say "In Memoriam - Children of S.K. Stovall Pioneer East Texas Erected by T.J. Stovall 1956". There are also reference to "Berry" surnames buried there. I have suspected that my ancestor might be buried here, but the word has it that there are numerous unmarked graves.
Sims Kelly Stovall and his wife Fannie Berry were in the 1880 Texas census, but I saw no William Lemuel, Lemmie, or any close name listed in their children's names. Sims was my GreatGreatgrandfather "William A. Stovall's" brother. If William Pool Stovall who married Mary Ann Carter was son of John Stoval and Jane C. Smith, then we would be connected through the line from Bartholomew Stovall and Anne Burton. Please let me know if you have found out any more about the connection.

I noticed that you were looking for someone to help you with the Shannon Cemetery. Douglas Powell is the cemetery association president and lives near by. One of my grandmother's brother was married to a Looney. I also recognize your family names. Did you find the graves you were looking for? The first Sunday in June each year Shannon community gathers for a memorial service. We would love to have you join us. Usually we have about 100+ people there and some one of the group perhaps will be able to answer your questions or give you some help.
