I am seeking information regarding a hotel or possibly a boarding house on Avenue D or possibly Front Street in Childress during the time between approximately 1910 to 1920. It was run by Mary T. FAGG. It was also possibly at one time a funeral parlor. I would appreciate any information regarding this family or place of business.

I need to know the first year several schools consolidated with Carey--included were Valley View, Prairie Hill, Purple Hill, and others. Was it 1927-1928 or 1928-1929. I have a picture of nearly 200 students standing in front of the schoolhouse with a sign that reads "Carey Consolidated High School 1928." I think it was a picture of the first students after the consolidation, but was it taken in the fall of 1928 or the spring of 1928? Please help. Nadyne Faulkenberry Lynn

WWI Soldier's photos found

My great grandfather found a wallet containing photos when he was stationed in Germany in WWI. My grandmother told me that it was his intention to find its owner. I came across it after she had passed away and would like to find a family member to return it to. There are very few names listed on the photos. There are three copies of a picture of a soldier that I assume is the owner. The back of one photo of a woman says "to Clifford from Lena". There is also a photo of two women standing by what seems to maybe be a mailbox with "T.A. Deisman" on it. There are other photos of people working on a ranch, groups of couples, and a small child that is in more than one photo. The photos were found in a leather wallet with "City National Bank Childress, Texas" embossed on the front. There is also a calling card(?) with "Miss Vida Welch" on the front and "Haskell, Tex." on the back. Any help in finding family of the owner is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to locate information on the family of my aunt.

Minnie Ola Ivey (b. 01 Nov 1894, d. 01 or 02 Mar 1920 in Childress, TX) and I'm guessing she was buried around Childress. Minnie married W. A. Morgan. Minnie was from the Grayson County area, so it is possible she was married there. Children of W. A. and Minnie (based on oil/gas leases from OK in the 1930's) were Desment (b. abt. 1912), Ray (b. abt. 1916) and William (b. abt. 1918)

I was told Minnie was buried in a cemetery by a creek translated to mean "head of the elm". I don't remember what the actual name of the place was.

Does any one have any information on this Morgan family. I have information on Minnie's parent, grandparents, siblings, etc. But her and her family are brick walls I am trying to chip away at.

Sue Southard
Bay, Arkansas

I'm searching for my great-grandfather, William Jordan born in Missouri in mid to late 1800's.

He married Martha Virginia "Mattie" Gibson who lived in Ellis County, TX at the time of their marriage (1891 or 1892).

At that time there was a JORDAN family living in Ellis County, TX. The head of the family was Sylvester Jordan who had a son by the name of William Jordan... born in Missouri.

I'm trying to find out if this particular William Jordan is my great-grandfather.

Mr. Sylvester Jordan moved to Childress before 1910, but his son William was not living with the family.

After William married Mattie they moved to Ardmore, OK where Mattie gave birth to my grandmother, Sallie Alice Jordan.

If you have knowledge of this Jordan family I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you.

Linda

I am curious about a friend who lived in Childress in the late 1960's. His name was Michael Buck and he was in his teens. I was told at one time that he was gravely ill and not expected to live. He may have died around 1968-70. I have been unable to locate his name in any cemetery listings in the area and have always wondered if he survived. Any information would be appreciated.

They were raised on a farm(?) in Childress Texas. Does anyone have any information?

Is Amos or Oliver or whatever name he goes by also in Tell Cemetery? Really need his death date.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone about this family.

Donna Lonon
Waxahachie, TX

I’m looking for information on Thomas Jefferson Jones born May 1858 who lived in Childress County and worked as a custodian at the court house that burned down. I found him on a 1930 Childress County Census at age 71 living with his daughter Bennie Jones. Relatives say he lived there part of his life, died there, and was buried in Childress. I’m wondering if there is an orbit or death certificate for him. Cemetery volunteers say there is a tomb stone for T. J. Jones but there is no birth or death dates. Any help would be appreciated. Please contact me with relavant info at athacker@nmg.org. Thanks, Angela in Colorado

I am looking for anyone who can tell me anything about my Grandpa, Roy B. Powers. He passed away in 1963. He worked for several years at the old Childress Lumber Yard, and he lived right behind the lumber yard on North Third Street when it was just a gravel road. His wife was Pearl Powers. I was born in Childress in 1949 and lived there until I was seven. I returned every year to spend the summers with my grandparents, until Grandpa passed away when I was 13. I now write some cowboy poetry, and want to write some things about my Grandpa. Anyone with any information please let me know. I'm looking for old stories and some of my family history. My grandparents attended the Parkview Baptist Church for a number of years. I now live in Lawrence, Kansas. Thank you for your help

However it could be his son, that is if he had one named after him.

There are 4 of us serious researchers working on the Lewellen line and have a good history on the family going back to the 1700's. I just had a lot of blanks on the family of Timothy. And you are correct there was 2 of them. A father and son with different middle initals. My ggrandmother on my mother's side is a Lewellen.

The Timothy that you show is the father who died and was buried in MO. then dug up and brought back to Childress, by the children. I just found that out yesterday.

In passing, we had NO rain in November at all and only 2 nights of freezing weather. Gas has FINALLY come down and is now $1.97. It is supposed to be 85 degrees tommorrow.

We always pray for rain out here because we get so little of it.

Charlie Royall
San Angelo TX

I recently saw Opal Roberts' obituary in the Amarillo Daily news (9/24/04). The only family history given was that she was survived by several nephews one of whom was Doyle Burns. Opal was born about 1909 and it is my belief that she was born Opal Burns to Will and Ada (Ida) Jones Burns and that she had a brother named Doyle Burns. They were originally from Eastland Co., TX. I would like to hear from anyone who is familiar with this family.
Thank you.
Sara McGee
I am trying to find some information on my great great garndparents Robert Holland Knight and Minnie Barnes. The had a several children, but I only know the names of a few of them. Flora May Knight was one of their daughters that was born in 1900 in Childress County. She also had a sister Lillian and a brother Robert and a brother Lee. I think she had a couple more brothers, but I don't know their names. If anyone has any information on these people I would love to have it. I only got Flora's parents names off of her SS Application. Flora was married in 1915 to Albert Franklyn Bond in Childress County.

Ann M.

His wife was born in September 1849 in Illinois, and their family is recorded by the 1900 Census to be in Childress County.

William Ross's sister and her family also appear in Childress County in 1900. Intha G. Ross was born in November 1847 in Missouri, and her husband Thomas B. HARWICK, a merchant, was born in May 1842 in either Arkansas or Alabama. This family was recorded in Cooke County, TX, by the 1880 Census.

Any information on these families is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, looking for any references to Logans living in Childress, Texas. Have some pictures of John Edward Logan, who married Effie Pearl Logston, living in Childress, Texas. They look like they were taken between the 1920s through the 1940s.

Other names are Tennie Logan (she married an Eldridge) and Virgie (she married either a Reed or a Eudy). John Edward's father was a J.W. Logan, but I don't know what the J.W. stands for.

Thanks in advanced for any information about these folks or any other Logans from that area. Any help will be appreciated!

Tracy

I am looking for the J P precinct for listing in census for my grandparents, Levi Dudley Jones and wife Stella Thompson Jones. I know they owned or rented (think owned) a farm in Childress county from about 1905 until shortly after Nov 10, 1916. My grandfather was a farmer, they had cattle, and processed milk for a dairy. He also made saddles.

The children in the family during the period they lived in Childress, Childress, TX were:
Mattie Florence Jones
Leonard Dee Jones
Willis Jones (stillborn or died shortly after birth)
Carroll Madison Jones
Wilbur Dennis Jones
Raymond Jones (stillborn or died shortly after birth)
Ethel Evelyn Jones
William Wayne Jones (my father b 11-10-1916)

The first 2 children were born in OK.
The last 6 children were born in Childress, Childress Co, TX. All of them on the farm.

The family was Methodist.

I have not been able to locate them on the 1910 census for Childress County ... That is the reason I am requesting help.
I found this on a map located on the web that had names of people and their homeplaces in that community. He was born about 1880 in San Saba, Tx. He was in Hood County on the 1900 census. I was told he moved to the Childress area after that. I believe he had a son named Troy who is now deceased. I would appreciate any information you could give. Thank you
