Weeping Mary

From Lufkin Daily News:

BOWMAN: Weeping Mary

By BOB BOWMAN
Contributing writer

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Few town names in East Texas attract as much curiosity as Weeping Mary, a 140-year-old black community hidden away in the deep woods of western Cherokee County.

Located on County Road 2907, off Texas Highway 21, five miles west of Alto, Weeping Mary was first settled after the Civil War by freed slaves from neighboring plantations.

It's name reportedly came from the 20th chapter of John, where Mary goes to the tomb of Jesus after he was crucified:

"...and when she had thus said, she turned herself back and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was not Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou. Whom seekest thou..."

After settling in the woods, the first effort of the free slaves of Weeping Mary was to establish a Baptist church, the Church of Weeping Mary, which has expanded over the years.

The next effort of the slaves was to established a school in 1896 when it had an enrollment of about 40. The school, however, was closed around the time of World War II and today, the few children of the community are bussed to schools in Alto.

In the 1960s, we visited with Newell Ross, 60, a deacon in the church with his brothers, David and Richmond.

"A long time ago, our church stood on a hill two or three miles up the Neches River from here. Then the deacons decided to move it down here, between Boles and White Oak creeks. Pretty soon, lots of folks moved around the church. Now, we have about 200 people living here," said Ross.

Life at Weeping Mary hasn't been complicated by a city government, a business district, fraternal orders or a post office, but it is surrounded by history.

It rests on the back side of the the Caddoan Mounds State Historic Site, which comprises the southwesternmost ceremonial center of the Caddoan people who flourished on the western edge of the woodlands of eastern North America between 1000 B.C. and A.D. 1550.

The site near Weeping Mary consists of three large earthen mounds as well as a large portion of a prehistoric village. Because of its proximity, the Caddoan people likely lived and wandered over what would become Weeping Mary.

Not far away is another historic site, the campsite of Zebulon Pike, who camped here with his men in 1807.

Under commission from General James Wilkinson, governor of the Louisiana Territory, the Pike party carried out an expedition to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red Rivers and to report on Spanish settlements in the New Mexico area.

Heading west from present-day Colorado, where the party saw the mountain later named Pike's Peak for the expedition's leader, the explorers were arrested by Spanish authorities.

Under escort back to the United States, the party camped near what would become Weeping Mary on June 14, 1807. The Pike expedition furnished an important account of Spanish Texas and New Mexico.

Weeping Mary is also within walking distance of El Camino Real, also known as the King's Highway and the Old Spanish Trail. In East Texas, the highway (now Texas Highway 21) runs from the Sabine River through Milam, San Augustine, Nacogdoches and Alto before reaching the Neches River and continuing westward to Crockett and eventually, San Antonio.

Today, Weeping Mary is a cluster of rural homes reached by a rare iron bridge spanning a creek shaded by tall oaks.

Nothing much happens here, but residents still remember a flood in 1957 when they had water 18 inches deep in their homes. "Like the Bible's Mary, we wept, but we're still here, thank the Lord," said an elderly woman.

(Distributed by the East Texas Historical Asssociaiton. Bob Bowman of Lufkin is the author of more than 38 books about East Texas. He can be reached at bob-bowman.com).
James Green Family

I have a copy of some records from an old tattered Green Family Bible. The first record is: "Rev. James Green departed this life on the 19th day of November 1856 in Cherokee Co. Texas 9 miles east of the town of (unreadable), age 78 years."
>
> And the next:
> "------- Green, the wife of James Green departed this life on the 11th April 1868 in Robinson Co., died at the house of Hiram Walkers her son, age 87 years as near as we can tell."
>
> We do not know where Rev. James Green was buried. Do you have a record of any Green burials in that period of time in Cherokee Co.? Rev. James Green may have officiated at marriages and funerals in Cherokee Co. in the years previous to 1856. I have not found any in my searching, and wonder if there is any record of his participation in such events.
>
> We do not know who Hiram Walker is, or where he lived--not a son, surely, but probably a son-in-law. And perhaps lived in Robertson Co.(there is no Robinson Co.), but perhaps Hiram Walker was married to a Green daughter in Cherokee Co.

I would be glad to submit the records from this Old Family Bible to the Cherokee Co. webpage, but my ancestor (Timothy Wilson Green, son of this James Green & Mrs. Green) was in Freestone and Leon Co., and records of his children's births more properly apply to those counties. The above is the only reference to Cherokee Co. Two other records, perhaps also sons of James Green are Thomas Green b July 7 18-9, and William Green born Jan 21 1814.
>
I appreciate very much your interest in genealogy and fforts to help others in their quests for information on their ancestors. And more precisely, I appreciate your efforts in my behalf on the family above.
>
> Linda M. Sykes

In 2004, the First Presbyterian Church of Crockett, TX, celebrated is 150th anniversary. As a part of the celebration, the Anniversary Committee proposed a project of copying and transcribing the old church records for publication. As time went on, more and more records and information were discovered, and finally, THE BOOK has gone to the printer – a 3-volume set, hardback, 1760+ pages, every-name indexed. There are registers, pastoral notes, marriages, baptisms, funerals, church minutes, and other records from the First Presbyterian Church and from over 47 small churches, most no longer in existence, in Houston County and surrounding counties. It provides a glimpse into the life of early East Texas, as well documenting many events in the lives of its residents, both Presbyterians and other denominations.
PRESBYTERIANS OF HOUSTON COUNTY AND BEYOND: CHURCH RECORDS AND DOCUMENTS FROM 1838 TO 2004, compiled and edited by Bettie W. Sarver and Rev. Jim Tom Ainsworth, is being printed in a limited quantity and will sell for $165.00 (plus $11.00 shipping, if necessary) per set. For information about the book or about ordering, please contact Bettie Sarver at bwsarver@gmail.com or Jim Ainsworth at jtains@nctv.com.

He married Olie Jarvis of Troup, Smith Co TX before 1895, They had 3 children: Ralph Cleveland b Oct 1895, Roy b Jan 1897 and Ocatavia b Sept 1898. He obivously died before 1904 as she had married an Edward Goodrum and had a son b 1905.

There is a possibility that the Blackmon was connected to the family of Wm L.
Catherine Frederick Grimes

Need death/burial information for Catherine Frederick Grimes, and any other information. She migrated to Cherokee County, Texas, from Coffee County, Alabama after 1850 with many of her Coffee County Grimes kin. She is listed in the 1860 Cherokee County cenus, PO at Rusk, Beat 8.

Catherine Frederick was born 6 Dec 1795 in Duplin Co., NC and married John Grimes in Duplin County, NC 23 Dec 1813. The couple migrated to Stewart County, Georgia, where John died in 1837. Catherine with many of the Grimes relatives migrated to Coffee County, Alabama after John's death. She and her children are found in the 1850 Coffee County, Alabama census.

As I understand it, quite a few of this greater Grimes family of Duplin County had already migrated to Cherokee County, Texas. One of the earlier of this family to migrate to Texas was Jesse Grimes, who arrived before the Texas Revolution, and was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Grimes County, Texas was named after him.

So, I am really trying to find out what happened to Catherine Frederick Grimes after 1860.

Jim Gilmer

I am trying to trace my Indian roots and family heritage.
I am the granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson Muckleroy and Lula Flanagan Muckleroy. I do know that my grandmother on was Cherokee but I need to know more about my family. I do know that some of my relatives may be mixed with Caucasian and some African American. The Muckleroy family have lived in the East Texas area Rusk, Nacadogches and Smith Counties. I know that the land from Nacadogches to Overton was given to the Cherokee and Choctaw Indians. I am trying to determine if my grandparents or great grandparents were registered as Indians. I would appreciate any information or direction that could be given.

They have a daughter Mattie born 1879.
In the 1880 census for Cherokee County, Texas, the husband, C B Moore is dead, and Laura and her daughter Mattie are boarding with another family.
I feel sure that Laura Griffith Moore remarried not long after the 1880 census, but I do not have access to Cherokee County Texas marriages.

Does anyone have access to Tree Talk, vol. 24, issue 2, winter 1998? I need photocopies of T. J. Roach letter to E. LeRose, 1860, TX; and T. J. Roach letters, 19th Century, TX. These were listed in PERSI on HeritageQuest online. I have already tried the Library of Congress, their holdings stop with vol. 23 (wouldn't you know it!) Glad to reimburse for photocopying and postage.

Thomas Jefferson Roach came from Orange County, Virginia to Cherokee County, TX around 1852. He married Alice Farish, his sisters married Farish men. T. J. had 5 wives! He died 1891 & is buried in the Roach Cemetery. He was son of William Roach & Tinsey Row. I am related to William Roach's brother, Robert Roach who married Mildred Jones in Orange Co., VA. Glad to exchange info.
Thanks for your assistance. Marigay

Seeking info on Levi CHAPMAN and Henrietta (Henryett) SINGLETARY. In 1880 Census of Cherokee County, Alto Township, Levi CHAPMAN is shown as 25 (?) years old, born in TX with father born in AL and mother in MS. Henrietta is shown as his wife 28 years old born in GA with both parents born in SC. Also in the household is a son Edwin age four born in TX ans were both is parents. I think that he was probably the son of Levi from another marriage. Have some info on Levi but have hit a brick wall with Henryetta SINGLETARY. I know that Levi and Henrietta were the parents of a daughter, Georgia Herse CHAPMAN, born in 1887 in Rusk, Cherokee County. Georgia is my wife's grandmother. Any info on this family, ancestors, descendents would be greatly appreciated. Will gladly share what I have.
Thanks,
Doyle Dunn

I am looking for information on an incident that occurred in Cherokee County, 1882.
George W. Fraley was moving his family from Navaroo to Cherokee county. His younger brother, James Fraley was helping.
They were accused of stealing 500lbs of cotton, arrested and held in the jail. The deputy Rhodes allowed them to escape to prevent a lynching. They were lynched by a mob. One of the last vigilante lynchings that occurred om Texas.

I'm pretty sure that is close to what happened.
Another source says that there was a shoot out where George, James and a Jasper Simpson were all killed. Also killed were men on the "other" side. I don't give much credence to that story (especially since Jasper Simpson died in 1930).

If anyone has an idea of where I can go to find an official source to this story, I'd appreciate it. Or, if you happen to have another account of the incident - I'd like to hear that too.
Thanks.

To our Cherokee County Cemeteries pages
http://www.tx-wooddell.net/cherokee/cherokee.htm
we have been updating the Cedar Hill and Mixon Cemeteries, and today we added one just west of Hwy 69 at Craft, that has no sign to let you know where it is, no sign on the gate or fence. The link is at
http://www.tx-wooddell.net/cherokee/nw/unknown_cemt.htm

If anyone knows what this one is called, let me know. We used to refer to it as the Craft Cemetery, but there aren't any CRAFT graves there that we found. It has been used as recently as 1992 and as early as 1867. I hope we may have found some "missing" graves for someone.

David
davewooddell@earthlink.net
In the late 1800's Jim Autrey & Louvenia Emiline Mallory were married. Just after Louvenia gave birth to their daughter, the couple were experiencing marital problems and began to split. Jim wanted custody of the toddler and instructed his wife to have her things ready the next day. Lou warned him not to come back, he did, and when he attempted to open the screen door she shot him in the leg. He died days later due to the complications of his wound, gangrene had set in and he didn't go see a doctor. I'm trying to find the ancestors/family of this Jim Autrey. Email me if you have any information at bsanford@airmail.net
