I have been looking in CASS county, TX for my missing Great great grandfather, Henry KITE. He left Milam co and was last seen in fall of 1909. He was old,and ill and the family never heard from him again. If anyone has any sources to look in for his name.The KITE family would really appreciate any look ups. He was confederate veteran enlisted in TEXAS.
Other people in CASS county,Texas that are not located would be the grave of ASHLEY HAYWOOD DODD AND HIS WIFE LUCY CAVE DODD. I have heard that there were lots of CAVE people in CASS county in the early days. I am looking for any info on Gussy/Gussie Don Hartfield (b. around 1919-20), Quillie/Willie Hartfield (b. around 1882-84), and Mattie Miles (b. around 1899-1900). Gussy/Gussie Don Hartfield was the child of Qullie/Willie and Mattie and was born in Cass Co., TX. From info I have gathered so far, Gussy had five brothers: Albert, J.C. ( mother possibly Ethel Body-Hartfield), Roscoe, Arthur ( mother possibly Ethel Body-Hartfield), and Johnnie B. Hartfield and two sisters: Mary Alice Williams/McDaniel Kirklin, and Georgia Mae Warren/Wells. From a census I have, could have had another brother by the name of Willie (1920 Cass Co-mother possibly Ethel Body-Hartfield). I do not know were there parents migrated from or if they were born in Texas. My grandfather thinks Mattie Miles migrated from Louisiana. I do know that she had a sister by the name of Beulah Miles (b. around 1904). If you have any info, or if there is any info that you would need from please let me know. Possible Tragic Event in June 1900

Can anyone tell me what tragic event may have occurred in Cass County, Texas in June 1900 which could have caused the death of all but one(1) of a ten(10) member Candlish family?
I would be interested in any records, newspaper articles, etc.

According to Ancesty.com the Candlish family:John(father), Sarah(mother), and children:Bertha, Rex, Buley, Nina, Robert, Johnnie, and Leslie died in Texas in June 1900. As the family and relatives had lived in Cass County for some time, it is believed the event occurred in this county.
Another son William, who would have been 15 at the time, survived and later died in 1971 in Florida.

The Candlish family had marriage connections with the Bachman and Majors families.

I have a picture of my great grandmother Mary E. Trimble (Farmer) (Ham); and on the bottom, it says Harrington Photographers Atlanta Texas. I don't know when the picture was taken. If I knew when this business operated in Atlanta, I could narrow it down to a time period. Mary died in 1897. My guess is that it was around 1890 although the hair looks like it could be prior to that. Does anyone know of this business? Were there City Directories of Atlanta before the turn of the century?

TEAGUE in Cass County - need death help?

I am hoping someone can help with my request. I am looking for the death information on Winifred Nancy Bray Teague.

She was born in about 1809 in either TN or NC - maiden name Winifred Nancy Bray. She married unknown Teague in about 1826. They were in Warren County, TN in 1834, that much is known. Apparently, Winifred's husband died in about 1848 or so, but we have no information on him at all.

Winifred and her children arrived in Cass County in about 1849. We have confirmed children: Nancy born 1828, William Swaim, born 1834, and Isaac H. born 1835.

Winifred died in Cass County, TX, but we do not have a confirmed date of death. She is buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Lanier, next to her daughter Nancy Teague Hollingsworth.

Online information USED to reflect her burial in this cemetery, but it seems to have disappeared now.

Can ANYONE help with death information on Winifred? We are looking in particular for the normal information, date and place of birth, exact date of death, and especially - ANY reference to name of her husband.

Found in a Ventura, CA antique concession, framed 10x14 marriage certificate.
"This certifies that J.T.Hester of Montgomery, Alabama and Ethel B. Reeves of Montgomery Alabama were by me united in Holy Matrimony according to the Ordinance of God and the laws of Alabama at Brides Home on the 19th day of August in the year of our Lord, One thousand nine hundred and seven." By Walter M. Crawford, Pastor C.P.Church, USA. Witnesses: J.D. Reeves and Mrs. J.D. Reeves.

This was found hanging on the wall of a concession on June 12, 2008.

Hi, it's been a while since I posted to any message board on Rootsweb. I would like to put this out there:

I would like some more info on any Epps, Cass, County, Texas: I'm related to this group somehow, and I would like to know if anyone can help me on my way.

My Epps family is locally out of Collin and Denton counties. My great grandfather was Dave Epps, on the Collin or Davis county 1870 census. He's not on 1880 census. His wife Belle Wells Epps married Charlie Mayes (Collin-Denton counties). My g grandfather was out of Missouri. I think Belle was born in Collin county. Her mother was a Harrington.

My dad was james Nickleberry of Cass County. We are kin to the Booners, Barbers, Prices, Flodys, Warrens, Richardsons, Lees, Kings, Gastons, James, Mccoys, And many more. Very little is known abt my G-grandparents...
My grandmother's dad died when she was young and her mother had little kids to raise. She was a housekeeper, 1920 for Mr JE Story, who also had children. Morris co., showed a marraige license for Lydia Carter and J.E. Story, and the census, 1930 showed her as his wife, tho, he died in 1931 as did his son, leaving a widow by another name. Many of this family were buried in the area of Omaha, Tx. I haven't found a pob for Rand Carter...here's what I've posted to Rootsweb...any Ky kin info appreciated, or any clues at all. Re: Rand Carter, etal...Ky to Tx 1900.

Attached (Hopefully) is the obituary of my G.Grandmother Margaret Ann Brice Stone, widow of Pleasant Hardin Stone I.

Margaret Stone died in Linden, Cass Co. TX on 13 Jan. 1916. She was born in Pickens Co. SC on 27 June 1845 and was the daughter of Franklin Brice.

If the obituary did not attach, I would appreciate a note from someone to inform me. In that case, I will post a transcription.

Looking for info on my gg grandmother whose last name was GRANT, we have no first name. She was married to James BRIDGES. They were in Cass Co. TX (Laney Community) on 31Dec1867 when my g grandmother was born, but she died a few days later due to complications of childbirth. She and James had a son, John, who was born in AL, so they most likely came to Cass Co. TX from AL, or possibly GA where James was from. We have some indication there were other GRANT family members in Cass Co. TX at that time. James BRIDGES remarried, Fannie SPIKES, daughter of Wm. and Martha SPIKES.
Martha Spikes raised the baby (my g grandmother), Willie Melvinia Bridges, who grew up to marry Robert Johnson Dudley. They raised a large (17 children!) family in Cass Co. and are buried @ Cornett Cemetery in Cass Co. Any help with this will be much appreciated.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Cass County , Texas as his home of record.

Born: June 11, 1930. Black
Date of loss: November 29, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 137 families in Texas that have not been located. There is one family from Cass County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

I have been able to scan a huge album of a deceased relative from Louisiana. This album contained some Cass County family pictures and I am hoping to share them with anyone who is related to this family. Thomas Walker and his wife Clarissa Kendrick Walker came from Claiborne Parish, LA and settled in Cass. Co around 1882. Tom was a sheriff and city Marshall in Cass County at one time. They had 10 children and only 3 of them were boys. Some of their daughters married into the Charles Nelson, Edgar Dodd, and Virgil Porter families. Some of the children I have not been able to find marriages for so far. Some pictures of these children were also in this album. I am attaching a family group picture taken in Cass Co. I am sure.

If you know of anyone who is researching this family, I would love to share with them. I would be related to them in the Kendrick lineage.

Nelson relatives from Cass County

My grandfather's family was from the Cass Co. area. He was born on Cass Co. in 1885. He had an uncle, Charles M. Nelson, who had a general store in Linden around that time and the early 1900's. This uncle had a son, C. M. Nelson, Jr., who had a store later in Kildare. The older Charles M. Nelson's wife was named Molly. Their children were Charles M., called "Peck", Lou(a girl), Callie, Guy, Dessie, and Morris. Both Lou and Callie married men named Sheffield.
Morris married a woman named Gladys Proctor.

My great grandfather was the younger brother of Charles. His name was John Bryan Nelson. He was married to Annie Eliza Blanchard, and they had several children, Horace Otto Nelson(my gf), Howard Orson, Henry O'Neil, Harry Orton, Johnnie Bee, and Blanche. They were all born in Cass County as far as I know. My grandfather Horace Nelson married Seddy Anna Wallace in 1910 in the Cass-Marion Co. area.

I am looking for descendants of William W. Deshazo and Nancy Herrington. William was the son of Robert Deshazo of Twiggs and Pulaski counties in Georgia. William and Nancy married in December of 1860. He died in 1865. Nancy and her father, Joshua, were executors of William's estate. One son, John B. Deshazo is mentioned in the estate. This son is shown on 1880 census in Texas in the household of Nancy and her second husband, George B. Adams. The 1880 Cass Co., TX census lists John B at age 17, b.in GA. He is not listed as Deshazo. I am assuming that perhaps Mr. Adams adopted him. John may not have known that he was a Deshazo. By the way, John was also William's brother and uncle's name.

There's also a physician named James Henderson living with them. I'm guessing that her maiden name would have been Wright.

I have found a Dr. William Wright and his brother Harry, living in Kendall co., Tx in 1920 running some sort of sanitarium. I think they may be the two brothers. William is married to, Minnie? and has a daughter named Kathleen.

It's interesting what men in my Upstate New York family did when things got tough. (Or sometimes just too cold)

An uncle of my maternal grandmother -- Horace Eugene Smith (b. 1835 in Wheatland NY), -- had moved to northern New Jersey, where he raised a family and was a partner in an enormously successful flourmill in Brooklyn.

In the 1880s, he endured some personal and business tragedies. The family business went broke (because of his older brother's love for the ponies) and his two kids died as teenagers. Sometime between 1883 and 1900 he left his wife and disappeared.

Recent information shows that he had moved to Julian CA, -- why there, noone knows -- and was listed there as a farmer in the 1900 census.

Even more recent info (like last week) indicates that he sold his farm in 1901 and disappeared again -- on to new adventures at the age of 66.

A Horace E Smith is listed in Cemetery Records of Cass County, TX volume 6, p. 190.

Could some kind soul check and see if this might possibly be our Uncle Horace. And if you like, I'll send you a bunch of stuff on some unusual people with a usual name (Smith). But that's optional.

Many Cass County couples' marriages are recorded in Morris County. The Morris County seat in Daingerfield is only five miles from Hughes Springs in Cass County. Conversely, the Cass County seat in Linden is more than 15 miles distant. Check Morris County if records are not found in Cass.

If anyone has access to looking up land, deeds, etc. I'm looking for information about William Allen who moved to Cass about 1857 from Tallapoosa co. AL. He was a very well off merchant/farmer in the 1860 census. He fought in the Civil War and died in 1878. His wife was Mary Agnes Bradley and I believe he had a brother J.C. Allen who was also in the 1860 census.

FLAT CREEK CEMETERY-Who does lie there?

Hello I seek Elaine Martin, She has logged data into the genweb site for Cass County TX-Flat Creek Cemetery.

We have a legend in our family that our ancestor: David Kite is buried in the Flat Creek Cem. in Cass County. I can not find a land description (address) of the whereabouts of this cemetery. What town is it near? There is a death listed for Malinda Fuller KITE but none for husband David Kite. There was a daughter Alice Kite and we seek her descendants.

David Kite married Malinda FULLER in Georgia and moved to tx and his death date is: 1893-we think. No record except the date and place in our family written legend records.

David & Malinda are in the 1880 census,Cass County,TX.

If you know where this cemetery is located? or a burial list? our family would be very thankful.
