My daughter recently returned from a trip to Enchanted Rock. She was very upset with me as she found no information of the "Story of Enchanted Rock" that I had told her. Growing up my Grandfather told us this story (it was one of our favorites)I was shocked when I went in search on the internet and could not find any reference to it. My Grandfather grew up in the Burnet area and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar "Enchanted Rock" legend. Grandfathers legend was of two Indian lovers from warring tribes that were caught together on top of the mountain. Fearing capture they leaped off a cliff and landed on a ledge, where they crawled back into a cave & dies. When the wind is right you can hear the Indian princess singing to her dying lover. Has anyone else heard this version?
I would also like to inquire if anyone has ever heard the story of "Tall Bet", this was a story told to kids to keep them from wondering to far from home.

Try a search for James Elbert Robason on FamilySearch.org. Robertson is an alternate spelling for Robason - it seems there was some sort of disagreement in the family about that leading to alternate use of Roberson, Robertson, and the original Robason that appears in early North Carolina history.

James Elbert Robason was my Great Grandfather. My granddad, Elbert Earl was Jesse Oscar's younger brother (born 1900). More information is all on FamilySearch.org.

If you have any insight into the Roberson/Robertson/Robason name dispute, I'd love to hear back.

Thanks Tem. I do have the marriage info on her parents. That is what made me think Elizabeth might have been born in Burnet County since she was born abt 1860. I can not find her nor anyone in her family on the 1870 census anywhere. Elizabeth married in Collin County and her parents are on the 1880 census in Collin County, but no Elizabeth under Rich or Flanagan (married name). I am sure the name is mis-spelled on the 1870 and that is why I can not find any of them on it. Or maybe there were just missed.
Betty

You will not find a birth certificate from that era! State mandated vital records began after 1900 but compliance lagged for several decades thereafter. I was born 1946 but my birth was filed as "delayed recording" in 1948. Too, the accuracy of info on vital records depends on the knowledge/truthfulness of the informant. Per death certificates, James Harvy Rich was born 27 Dec 1862 and his sister Ophelia Nall was born 20 Aug 1862? That didn't happen! Then, we need to confirm Elizabeth's parents. What was her complete lifespan and where did she die?

Good luck with your investigation. Having done the same thing for years myself - it really can be hit or miss when looking for specific people during that period of Texas History. So much of the history was passed along orally among "old-timers," that sadly - much of it was lost because it wasn't recorded anywhere. I'd suggest you check out the Frontier Times archive. It can be a tedious endeavor, but now they've installed a search utility on their website streamlining the process somewhat. I ran a search for the name "Clark" and it returned 10 pages containing 187 hits. Tedious, but better than nothing. Good Luck, and Happy Hunting!

Here's the link: http://www.frontiertimesmagazine.com/index.php/Search/Page-1...

Captains were sometimes short time too and some was called on many times to raise a company, others was in for a while. Depends on what was going on at the time. Thanks for the luck, I will need it! I feel I owe it him to do some research and try to find him. He was a captain in the Texas Rangers I would love to find his story. Unlikely, but maybe I can find him in history. I love to do research, fustrating as it is sometimes. It is worth it when you do find something. Thanks again. And again if anyone who reads this that has some info that may help my search for Capt. J.W. Clark, please post it here or email me at mp3family@hotmail.com Thank You, James Nichols

Good luck with that search! I graduated from high school when Texas History was mandatory. We studied everything from Quanah Parker to the Red River Raft. You are correct about some of those rangers drifting in and out of service. Captain was a command position so, hopefully, he stayed for a long duration?

The only thing I have to go on is "J.W. Clark Capt. Texas Ranger". I have a old leather bag, most likely for a saddle. That was made around the late 1860s to the early 1890s. It has the above info on the bag. I had someone look at it and by the construction and other factors it was made during the period stated above. The Texas Ranger Museum does not have any offical documention of him. Which just means it will not make it easy to track him down. Their records are incomplete. There are a few people that might fit. That being said I am checking out any info that might fit. Bringing me here. Thanks James Nichols.

Thank you for the update and reply. I am not sure which family I am looking for. I was hoping to find a Texas Ranger Captain J.W. Clark. He should have been active somewhere around the late 1860s to early 1890s. Many did not stay long in the Texas Rangers, some did stay for a while or rejoined later. Without an offical document listed with the Texas Ranger Museum, I was hoping someone may know of one, somewhere around these dates. I was hoping I didn't have to go through several different Clark families to find this one. That is looking more unlikely. Thanks again for the reply. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks james Nichols mp3family@hotmail.com

Hopefully, a Clark-descendant will followup on the research begun by Cheyrl Velten? John Clark wed Eunice B. Jane Fowler, 15 Dec 1859, in Fannin County. Why was he in Fannin? Were there other relatives nearby? Answers to those question will often aid in overcoming "brickwalls". Grayson County connects to Fannin's western boundary. In 1880 Grayson-Denison-006-Image 25, find the family led by T. J. Clark age 48 and born in Georgia. His wife R. C. (Rebecca Caroline) was the daughter of George M. Bruce and Rebecca Watson. Also part of that 1880-household were sons: James, John M., Joseph H., George, and Thomas. Son Benjamin (Oct 1876 - 19 Oct 1877) died earlier and Charles Wesley (Feb 1881 - 1938) was born after the census. The family's time in Texas was brief perhaps as a result of deaths? In addition to Benjamin, Oakwood Cemetery is the final resting place of: T. J. Clark (unknown - 9 Aug 1884), and J. Clark (29 Jan 1868 - 10 Feb 1894). I believe the latter is listed twice, as J. C. Clark? In either case they appear to have departed Texas prior to 1900? I believe the family's roots are in Hall County, GA? That's where John Clark wed Lucy Morris, 31 Oct 1822. Thomas Jasper was born ca. 1835 per 1850 GA-Hall-District 38-Image 61. John Clark, disputed lawman of Mason County, was his older brother? If a male descendant from the lawman's line has been found then it might be possible to find someone from Thomas Jasper's line? George W., son of T. J., had at least four sons enumerated 1920 GA-Fulton-Atlanta Ward 7-District 122-Image 35. I'm not related but would like to see this issue resolved!

Don't believe she'll respond. There is a findagrave memorial in Wood County, TX that's an autobiography. I, for one, hope she passed the "torch" where genealogy is concerned. A tremendous amount of research should be continued! Too late, your message caught my attention and I delved into the Clark-family ancestry.

I am looking for the Cheyrl Velten that replied to the Texas Ranger Dispatch Issue 16 Spring 2005. About an article of sheriff John Clark. Would this be you? I am looking for info on a Texas Ranger Capt. J. W. Clark. Would you or any one on here know anything about him? Thanks, anything will be helpful. It fits the timeline of your Texas Ranger John Clark.

Interesting and I have had a connection in my mind for sometime now I wanted to explore. This would be a connection back to the Norred's.

OK, here we go, and lets do a little background first to set the stage so to speak.

One of my gg grandfather, James Oliver Norred, son's was Edward Paskel Norred (1884 1933), in fact the last of his and Margaret Amanda Coon Norred's 11 children.

Edward married Georgia Ann Mitcheltree (1884 1973) and one of their daughters, Clara Kate Norred (1913 19890) married a Vernon Watkins (1907 1984).

Now Both Vernon and Kate were born in Burnet County, Kate in Burnet (perhaps on the family farm on Hairston Creek) and Vernon I have as Lake Victor. I have their marriage in Burnet 29 Nov 1933. I show them living in Austin 1935 and there after in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas where they are buried.

I don't have much research on this particular branch of my family as yet, but I do have a good connection, my great uncle Gerald Watkins, one of their issues. I haven't contacted Gerald in some months, but will do so with this information as soon as I have time and see what he has. This might be where I remember the name "Lafayette" from in the first place, and I will explain farther in a moment. First here is what I do have, and you will see where this might apply.

As mentioned I have Vernon as born in Lake Victor, Burnet County in 1907 and his parents were John Calvin Watkins (1858 1938) who married Nancy Harriett Nicks (1866 1943) 14 Sept 1882. I show John to be born 13 Feb 1858 Newton, Missouri, and Nancy 27 July 1866 in Burnet County. They are both buried in Burnet County, Texas.

John Calvin's father was (as per my sketchy records mind you) was Hollett (Hollis) Watkins (1828 1860), and he was born Arkansas City, Desha Co, Arkansas. His death is shown to be 28 May 1860 in Mantua, Collin Co, TX. He married Mary Jane Marcum (1834 1895) in McDonald, Missouri. Her death is shown as 18 Jul 1895 in Lake Victor, Burnet County, Texas.

I show Hollett's father as Issac (or Isaac) Watkins (1784 1827) and born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His death and burial are shown to be in Washington, Arkansas. He married Margaret Dun (1796 1870) and born in Georgia. She died in Collin County, Texas but was buried with Issac in Arkansas.

Now these people seem to be prominent in Burnet and Bertram areas of Burnet county within your time frame, and something tells me they perhaps might be the same ones, as mentioned my research is area has been limited thus far.

He is what interest me, first the name "Lafayette" would indicate a French heritage, most likely Southern Louisiana in our case. I looked through all of the issues I have for a John and Lafayette connection (and there are not many mind you) and see no names that would indicate one of the issues marring into a family of French heritage, but that doesn't mean this did not happen. I didn't did I find any in Kentucky either. As mentioned that name just rings a bell.

Howdy Amzy, didn't want you to think I was ignoring you, but wanted to get the above "possibility out of the way first.

Amzy and I are cousins by the way and Felix was also my great grandfather by my grandmother, Annie Alice Hibler.

As to the Hibler connection, I still have nothing new, and if Amzy doesn't have a connection either then we are still at an impasse on that link. Something about the Watkins and Hibler's seem to keep popping up, but at the moment I will refer to Amzy or my brother on this one as they have the book. As usual more research is needed, but that is what we lonely genealogist do right?

As to a long shot tie in, Clara Kate Norred, Vernon Watkins wife had a brother named Ted La Rue Norred. Now I find the spelling "La Rue" most often and in Cajun French is basically "The Red" in most dialects. I was married to two Cajun women and my second wife had a cousin who went by La Rue. His full name was Virgil La Rue Gilbeaux. It is possible there were more than one Norred Watkins connection I seem to remember. This of course will require more research, but we must remember that most the issues are named for parents and grandparents.

If what I posted on my Watkins linage seems to match with yours then I would suggest looking farther into what I have and see if it leads to what your looking for. It does appear we are all connected so please post back with any progress as I would really like to know for my tree.

After the Raven/Goss Vines/Barron mysterys will be off to finalize my wife"s Samuel Chance Old 300 linage in Texas for DART (completly new find). It is funny that she has always teased me about me being Texan with Benjamin Bruton linage in VanZandt county in 1830. She is more Texan than me HAHAH.

Her parents were Henry Hugo Raven, Sr. (4 May 1866 - 14 Oct 1942) and Edith (nee: Wehrung) Raven (6 Jun 1875 - 5 Apr 1949). Both died in Austin, Travis County per online death certificates https://familysearch.org/ They're found 1910 Travis-Precinct 2-District 0059-Image 75 and 1920 Burnet-Bertram-District 22-Image 2. Eva must have married 1920-1926 'cause son William Henry Goss born 1 Aug 1927 in Travis County? That birth certificate online at family search as is Edith Josephine Goss' in Burnet County. There are also records for Rosalie McNeill Goss in Brazos County and Nehemik Hoten Goss in Bastrop County without actual certificates. Per data found on Edith Josephine's certificate, her father born in Hempstead, Waller County. The marriage could have been performed in his hometown or any point between the counties. http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/cclerks.shtml#M I'd make some calls first. There will be a nominal cost for copying so self-addressed stamped envelopes to the "wrong" county will not yield desired results. William McNeill Goss was previously married to Jennie Jones in Waller County.

Check for online county resources first. Both Travis and Williamson counties have some documents posted. Williamson Co. also has a private site that I have used off and and on for years called ThreeLeggedWillie.

Many records for both counties can be found on Family History Library microfilm and ordered through your Family History Center. I'm unfamiliar with Alaska, but I suspect there are some centers there. If members of this family died in Texas after 1902, the Texas death certificates are online at familysearch.org and may help you identify ancestors. Travis Co. was particularly good at filing certificates when the requirement first became law in 1903. (It took 33 years for all counties to comply.) Once you have the correct Raven family, you can also view the county tax records for free on familysearch.org. When all else is exhausted, don't forget that a return address and postage stamp from Alaska may get you some help from a county clerk.

The Raven family you are speaking of most likely came from Austin, in fact, one of the sons was a tinner and the Ravens are still in the plumbing business today. You need to look at both Travis Co. and Williamson Co. Hugo Raven and his wife are buried in Old Round Rock Cemetery. (Right inside the gate nearest the Bass grave marker.) There were several Austin marriages that occurred in Austin that could have produced your Raven. Herman L. Raven m. 1) Margaret A. E. Hamilton 3 Feb 1859 (Bk 1:232) and 2) Miss Henrietta S. Wood 10 Aug 1891 (Bk 7:460); Geo. Raven m. Mary Leverett 26 Nov 1885 (Bk 6: 326); Leslie Raven m. Marie Mathis 22 Jan 1894 (Bk 8: 336). I would look at Williamson Co. first. The family came from Baveria/Germany and there are several trees that will help you get your research on the Raven line started. I have not completed work on this line as it is an allied family. Be sure to look for articles in the Burnet paper and the Bertram paper also, if they lived near the county line.
