One of the Lewis Publishing Co series. Most larger libraries will have a copy; doubtful for interlibrary loan.
You can also read it on The Portal to Texas History at http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth29785/
A number of Biographical Sketches - what we usually refer to as "vanity press" since the individual gave
the information he wanted out there (self advertising) but great for family info/clues. These were published on the presumption that anyone treated in the biographical section was sure to purchase at least one book.

Trevia Wooster Beverly
Houston, Texas

History of Texas together with Biographical History
Milam, Williamson, Bastrop, Lee, Travis and Burleson Counties.

Published 1893

This is a great book with alot of genealogical information in it. Many pictures as well. There is an index, just very well put together. I got to thinking today, while at the Taylor library, that many may not know you can find a digitized copy of it online.

If the link doesn't work below, email me and I will send you the link.

Laura
jmmfan1@aol.com

http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/FH3...

The Burleson County Cemetery book was updated very recently. It is for sale. It contains many of those names or cemeteries left out of the original book. Of course, many names of people are still not included. Some gravesites never had a tombstone per sec. Some stones were lost to time and or vandals. Some cemeteries and/or gravesites were never located, as we were not told about them. We are still trying to collect names and sites for future use. If anyone knows the burial home of their loved one and we do not have them listed, please let us know.
I will be happy to see if we have any info on your ancestor.
Linda

The book for Burleson Co is not all inclusive. I was glad I went to the cemetery and then found the book. It left many of the graves around my wife's family out of the book. The folks at the city hall were surprised to find that it had gaps, they had assumed it was correct and complete as of the publishing date.
If you are looking for someone specific, go to the cemetery itself.

The Porters Chapel Cemetery is the property of the Methodist Church. You may contact the Methodist Bishop who has records for this area, if you can identify him.

Tom Mayes has the records for the Caldwell Masonic Cemetery. His phone number is 979-567-3483. Your best chance of catching Tom is after 6:00 p.m.

I have looked on the internet for office information for the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell and I can't seem to locate a telephone number for the cemetery. Is there an office that I can call to get information on people who are buried in that cemetery?

If there isn't an office, who holds the original burial records for this cemetery?

I have been to the GenWeb site for Burleson County and also have a copy of the 1988 transcription book "Cemteries of Burleson County Texas" published by the Burleson County Historical Society.

These research tools have helped me greatly, but I need further detailed information and need to talk to whomever has the original burial records.

In addition, does anyone know who holds the burial records for Porter's Chapel?

Thank you and I have been searching for the connection for quite some time. The family has strong Indian characteristics and there were government issued Indian numbers, so I knew there was an Indian heritage. Now I know that it is through Henry Parker Sr and his wife who were alleged to have been part Cherokee and/or Choctaw. My husband's grandfather, Marvin Caswell was Mary Elizxabeth Parker's son, whose father was John Wesley Parker and his parents were Henry Parker Jr and Nancy Black. Our son-in-law, Jon Blair, is descended from Perry Anderson Parker, Henry and Nancy's other son. His grandmother was Gladys Parker, daughter of Alfred Parker, son of Perry Anderson Parker whose parents were Henry Parker and Nancy Black. The circle of life is a reality in our family!

Thank you so much for sharing with me.This helps tremendously. Now I see why Marvin Caswell (grandfather) and his siblings all have distinct Indian features. His mother was Mary Elizabeth Parker, daughter of John Wesley Parker, son of Henry Parker. He talked about their Indian numbers that were given to them and that they were called half breeds. He didn't want to talk much about it before he died.So Henry Parker Sr and Rachel were Cherokee and/or Choctaw then. They weren't Quanah Comanche descendants, but were Indian nevertheless. The entire Parker/Caswell family will be so grateful to see and read this.

Thank you once again for your time.

I hope that one of you read this and can help me connect the family. Not only are Henry Parker and Nancy Black g-g-grandparents to my husband, but they are also g-g-g-grandparents to our son-in-law. Perry Anderson Parker and John Wesley were their sons and that's where the connection is. Both families talked about a Quanah Parker connection, but we just can't find it. My husband's grandfather and siblings looked Indian and they talked abotu their Indian numbers.Gladys Parker, our son-in-law's grandmother talked about it too, but we don't know where that connection was...maybe Annie Mae Short? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Lida Busch was my maternal grandmother's half sister. I met Aunt Lida in about 1958. I believe she had just graduated from college. That really wowed me as she was in her 60's. The relative I remember visiting was a Gasper in Dallas in about 1958ish. She stayed at our house and rode with us to my wedding in 1962. We exchanged letters for several years until she passed away. Her daughter who lived in Ft. Stockton won a very prestigious award in about 1966, and she and her husband brought Aunt Lida with them to D. C. for the award ceremony. We showed them around Washington a little bit.

Janet,

I just found that we are also related through my Walker family. These are proven to be the same families. I went to the Walker website and found that Judith Russell and Frances Bateman, researched Edgefield SC and found:

July, 2002

1. "Holloway Ancestors." Ancestors of George Holloway. This is the booklet with the Martha Botts reference. Shirley's Noble Bible has the daughter of Thomas Holloway and Lucretia Walker as Martha BOTTS Holloway.

Try this website for more information.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/u/s/Judith-F-Ru...

Patty Sims

Dear Janet,

Your gggrandfather, John Randolph Sims, married to Virginia Holloway, was my grandfather's uncle. J. R. also had a brother Milton, married to Lucinda Ragsdale and second wife, Pattie Wilson, who lived near him on the "Brazos Bottoms". They were brothers of my ggrandfather, Benjamin Francis. There were six children in the family of Benjamin F. Sims and Mary Ann McClendon. Benjamin went into the Confederate Army as a Capt. and came home "to die of a disease contracted while in service". Mary Ann was found on their plantation on the 1870 Census of Monroe Co. She died possibly about 1872 in Monroe Co. Benjamin and Mary Ann had children: William H., Walker, Columbus Randolph (my grandfather), Milton, Sprat B. and Minnie Lee Sims.
My grandfather left MS in about 1875 and family history has it that he first went to his uncles "on the Brazos." He left there and acted as a border guard at El Paso, then he went gold prospecting in the Organ Mtns. of NM. He met my grandmother in NM and they married and had 10 children there. They eventually moved to the San Diego/Los Angeles area of CA.
I do not have all of the information on the Holloway family, but I know someone who does. If you respond to this post, I will get in touch with her and have her contact you directly.

This is extracted from TX 1870 County Burleson, Brazos Bottoms, Roll: M593_1577, Page: 211, E.D. 7 Jul 1870, Enumerator: J W Stephens
Line 29, Dwelling 286, Sims Virginia, 30, F, W, At Home,
TX 1870 County Burleson, Brozos Bottoms, Roll: M593_1577, E.D. 7 Jul, 1870
Line 28, Dwelling 286, Sims John R, 42, M, W, Physician, 500 TN.
http://user.txcyber.com/~bga/csapen.html
Sims, John Randolph (Mrs) 47654
Claimant: Sims, John Randolph (Mrs)
Pension Number: 47654
County: Brazos
Husband: John Randolph

I am very curious because your last name is Brown. Would you be a descendant of the Brown's noted here? This is a portion of a letter from a man who's wife's family is referred to, "...her late father, Aubrey Brown, and his brother James Sims Brown, were very interested. Their mother Virginia Sims Brown, who died in 1973 at the age of 91, was the grandaughter of John R. Sims, who she knew well, as he did not die until 1909." and "...Her grandmother Brown lived with her grandfather John R. Sims after her father died in 1895 until her own marriage in 1903. Later in life she lived with Mamie Sims, who was John R. Sims's daughter by his second wife, who was the half -sister of Mrs. Brown's mother! Mamie Sims lived in Bryan, Texas until her death at age 99 in 1980."
Also, J. R. Sims grandparents, Kizziah and Paris Sims had a daughter, Lucinda who married Ovid Porter Brown. Could you be a descendant of these Browns? There is an historical house in Columbus, MS that is called the Sims/Brown House. It was the home where my gggrandfather, William Sims, lived until he died and Stephen Brown, a nephew, bought it from his children.

I am hoping to hear from you. Possibly you could fill me in on J. R.'s line and I don't know if you have or want more on the Sims, but I do have quite a bit of information you are welcome too.

Sincerely,
Patty Sims
Littleton Taswell Parker was born in Mississippi. He was first married to Julia Bloetcher, with whom he had a son George Taswell Parker. She died after 1860 and before 1866. He subsequently married Roena Clark and they had a son Wiley R. Parker. After the death of their parents, George W. Parker filed papers to be named guardian of George and Wiley, being their "nearest relative residing in Texas." He estated the estate as being worth about $10,000.

Sources: Burleson County probate records, U.S. census records and Mississippi marriage records.

I ran across this information while researching other Parkers at the Burleson County courthouse. I think there is a relationship though I have not yet established what it is. George W. was living in the bottom with John Parker in 1860 and Taswell may have been his brother. George W. also was from Mississippi. I do not know what happened to George W. and the boys.

I wondered if Roena was buried there as well.

Kate Thomas

,
