Descendants of Captain John Bird

I am interested in communicating with other descendants of Captain John Bird. I am descended through his son Thomas J. Bird. One of Thomas' daughters was Sarah Ellen (b. 5 Dec. 1852; d. 6 Oct. 1928) who married Peter Sell in Burleson County in 1870. Peter was born in Pennsylvania.

I have been researching the Bird family for a number of years and would like to compare notes and share information.

Ron Pattterson
San Marcos, Texas

Landolt and Massey family from Somerville 1888-1930

I am looking for any information such as photos, gravestites or other historical information for the family of William N Landolt and his wife Lonie Massey. I just discovered today that William Landolt was one of the founders of Somerville. His wife was the daughter of Sarah and George Massey from Georgia. Sarah lived accross the creek in Washington county and died in Somerville in 1903 and I think she is burried in the Oak Lawn cemetery next to her daughter Lonie Landolt. I suspect that since William Landolt was one of the founding fathers of Somerville that there must be some information in the museum or libary there. I am mostly interested in the Massey family. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Flaningan / Flannagan / Flanagin / Flaningam family in Burleson, Taylor & Williamson Counties

Searching for information on the Flaningan/Flaningam family that came from Harrison/Greene/Knox Counties in Indiana to Burleson County in 1860.

Arison Crecelius FLANINGAM (with an "M"), born about 1799 in New Jersey, was in Harrison County, Indiana by 1820. His family shows up on the tax rolls in Harrison County in the early part of that century. Father is believed to be Samuel and mother was Sarah.

Arison Sr. married Mary Polly Zubrotin Crecelius in 1826 and they are believed to have had one daughter before Mary died in January 1828. Mary was also the mother of Jesse Gaines Crecelius from a previous relationship in Tennessee. Jesse left the Flaningam household after his mother died and migrated to Mississippi where he became a primitive Baptist preacher. According to the book "The Descendants of Jesse Gaines Crecelius 1815-1900" by Robert L. Crecelius and Sara Stone Williams, his mother was alleged to have had two children during her marriage to Arison Sr. but this has not been proven, and the 1830 census in Harrison County only shows one female that may be Mary's. The other young male would be Arison Jr. who was the firstborn to Arison Sr's second marriage.

Arison Sr. married Letitia Sinclair on 11 August 1828 in Harrison County.

Arison Crecelius Jr. was born 25 December 1829 to Arison Sr. and Letitia in Harrison County (Obit and death cert in my possession) and was with the family on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and then turns up back in Greene County Indiana married to Ann Mariah Lehman where they had four children, two that survived to adulthood. Arison Jr. died in Greene County in 1894 and is buried in Bloomfield Cemetery.

Daughter Sarah Ann's line (married to Watson and Smith) has been documented. She stayed in Texas.

Son James enlists in the Civil War and has "disappeared" as have his brothers William and George. Looking for information on these three siblings. It is possible they all went back to Indiana or even Louisiana where it is believed they had relatives.

Nelson E. Flaningan marries Matilda Moses and stays in Texas where he has several children. Nelson's daughter Ida Letitia married a T.B. Porter in 1892 and is widowed by 1900. Ida had three known children with Mr. Porter. Nelson is believed to have been named for his mother's brother or a cousin. Nelson is a Sinclair family name, as are the names Sarah, George and William.

Also looking for information on where Arison Sr. died and where Letitia was living when she died in 1897. I have lost her in 1870 and 1880 but am still on the hunt for her in those years.

This family has ties with the Southern Indiana Sinclair families and Arison Sr. purchased land in Greene County Indiana in 1844 near Bloomfield close to the White River where other members of the Sinclair families were living (i.e. Nelson Sinclair, Wayman Sinclair, Horatio Sinclair and others)

The Fort Concho Chapter DRT in San Angelo, Texas held a Medalion Marker Service for Real Daughter Sarah Chriesman Armstrong on Feb.23, 2008 at Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo, Texas.
Sarah Chriesman Armstrong was born 12 May 1846, in what is now Burleson County, Texas. She died 12 May 1951 at the age of 105 years. Taken from her original DRT application dated 6 November 1947, Sarah Armstrong was 101 when she became a member of the Fort Concho Chapter DRT.
Sarah Chriesman Armstrong was one of ten children of Horatio Chriesman and Augusta Hope Chriesman. Her father Horatio Chriesman came from Virginia to Missouri then to Texas at age of 25 in 1821 as one of the Old Three Hundred of Stephen F. Austins Colony. Horatio Chriesman was a surveyer and by terms of the contract between Austin and Chriesman all surveys were to be made by Chriesman. Horatio Chriesman was made Acalde in 1832 at San Felipe. While serving as Acalde he signed the official call for the Convention of 1832. In 1837 Horatio Chriesman was one of a commission of five chosen to select a site for the capitol of the Republic.
J. C. Womble--Burleson County, Texas

Jud. C. Womble, the present popular and efficient Treasurer of Burleson county, was born in Coosa county, Alabama, January 5, 1853, and is the youngest son of William H. and Eliza J. Womble, who are natives, the father of North Carolina and the mother of South Carolina. His parents were married in Alabama where they spent the greater part of their lives, the father dying there in 1857. The mother and children remained in Alabama till most of the children became grown when, in 1869, they came to Texas and settled in Burleson county. The mother died in Caldwell, this county, in 1890. Most of the children married in this county and settled here and elsewhere in the State. The eldest and youngest, Sallie J. widow of Rev. F. H. Carroll, and Sudie E. wife of Rev. James M. Carroll, reside in Lampasas; the second and fifth, William T. and Jud. C. are residents of Caldwell, while the third, John E. lives at San Angelo, and the fourth, Henry G., died in Burleson county before the removal of the remainder of the family out from Alabama.

Jud C. of this article, being next to the youngest of the family, was sixteen when he came to Texas. His boyhood had been spent in Coosa county, Alabama, in the schools of which county and at the Baptist college located at Talladega, he received his education. His first employment on locating in this county was as a farm hand on Hooker's prairie. He was so engaged for three years when, in 1871, he secured a clerkship with Dean & Carroll, at Caldwell, and for three years following clerked in the mercantile business. He then formed a partnership with James L. Dean, and engaged in business for himself at Deanville in Burleson county.

In 1881 he disposed of his interest at Deanville, and returning to Caldwell just prior to the completion of the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe railway to this place, opened a general store here, out of which grew his present establishment, namely, groceries, guns and sporting goods. Later Mr. R. E. McArthur became interested in the business, the firm becoming Womble & McArthur standing so at this time. Messrs. Womble & McArthur carry a select stock of goods in their line and control a large trade.

In March 1888, Mr. Womble was appointed to fill a vacancy in the office of Treasurer of Burleson county. In November following he was elected to the same position, and two years later was re-elected, and in November, 1892, was again elected as his own successor. He has made the citizens of Burleson county an honest and capable officer, and that they appreciate his faithful services is shown by the practically unanimous vote by which they have each time elected him to this office.

In December 1884, Mr. Womble married Miss Mary E. Oliver, a daughter of Dr. J. P. Oliver, an old and prominent physician of Burleson county, a sketch of whom appears under an appropriate title in this work. Mr. And Mrs. Womble have three children, Herbert, Oliver and Henry, and both are members of the Baptist Church.

Source: History of Texas together with a Biographical History of Milam, Williamson, Bastrop, Travis, Lee and Burleson Counties.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Burleson County , Texas as his home of record.

Soldier: EDWIN GENTRY
Born: July 12, 1930. Black
Date of loss: Novenber 27. 1950. MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 137 families in Texas that have not been located. There is one family from Burleson County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
He came to the USA from Prussia with his sisters and some in-laws. I'd like to know what ship they traveled on, who their parents were, what city they were from, etc. Does anyone in this family have any of that information? Would love to hear from you. I did meet some members of the Gasper family in Dallas back in the 1950's.

I am searching for information on a Lewis family from Decatur Co. GA. Thomas Banks C. Lewis was born about 1818 in Georgia - possibly Screven Co.

He was first married to Mary J. Johnson (1840 Decatur Co. GA) and they had two children, Rebecca born about 1843 and William born about 1849. This family was found on the 1850 Decatur Co. GA census record. Mary died between 1850 and 1854.

Thomas re-married Sarah Bragina Lewis in 1854. As of the 1860 census, they had 3 children, Nancy born 1856, Thomas R. born 1857, and David born 1860. Nancy and Thomas were both born in Florida, and David was born in Texas. This family was found on the 1860 Burleson Co. TX census record, along with Thomas' two children from his marriage to Mary Johnson.

I have not been able to locate them on the 1870 census record.

I believe he was born in Mexico around the turn of the century and possibly immigrated in the early 1900's for railroad work in Sommerville. I need to know if anybody has a death record of him or other pertinent information. Also on Isabel or Ysabel Mendoza, I was told she used to cook for the farm hands on some farms in Sommerville.
I am searching for any information about Dr. John Thomas Hill, of Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas. He was born in 1844 (IL) and died in 1912 in Caldwell. He had at least four wives, four sons (C.P., Ed, John H., and Tony) and two daughters, Eula and Ruth. His brother's name was James Allen Hill.

I am also looking for information regarding his last wife, Earlie V. Bird, who died in 1907 and was supposedly from Gonzales, TX originally. One of Dr. Hill's sons (CP) married a Dolly (Dorothy) Bird in 1907 in Caldwell. Is there a connection between Dolly and Earlie?

I have copies of all of Dr. Hill's marriage certificates from the court house in Caldwell. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

R. H. Locklie and wife Martha are on the 1880 Burleson Co census with their family. I believe Martha's full maiden name was Martha Caroline Thompson. I have checked many variations of spelling for both Robert Hampton Lockley and Martha Caroline Thompson but cannot find a record of their marriage in TX records. I am uncertain about their marriage place but believe it could have been Burleson County. Any ideas as to another source for Burleson Co marriage records besides the records at the courthouse?

Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lockley, married George Washington Brisbin.

There seem to be dozens of Thompson families in early TX records and I have searched those records diligently.

I am trying to unravel the mystery surrounding Jane Francis LOCKMAN or RANDOLPH ALLBRIGHT's mother. Jane Francis LOCKERMAN/LOCKMAN married Jacob E. B. ALLBRIGHT 21 Dec 1853 in Burleson Co. I could never find any LOCKMAN or LOCKERMAN in Burleson Co. or surrounding counties. There was an Antonio LOCKMAN on the 1846 Bexar Co. Tax List. Another researcher said Jane Francis' name was not LOCKMAN, but was RANDOLPH. In 1850 Burleson Co. census is Elizabeth RANDOLPH with children George, John, Mary, and Jane Francis. I did find an Elizabeth LOCKMAN who married William DAVIS in 1843 in Washington Co. Then an Elizabeth DAVIS married Simon MILLER in 1848 in Burleson Co. On 25 Dec 1857 Nathan BIRD died and Elizabeth RANDOLPH was named guardian of his minor children as she was their grandmother. In 1862 Elizabeth MILLER died in Burleson Co. and John M. RANDOLPH filed for probate. Also named as heirs were Jane Francis ALLBRIGHT and George W. RANDOLPH. Are these all the same Elizabeth? What happened to husbands RANDOLPH, DAVIS, and MILLER? Did her daughter Mary marry Nathan BIRD? Any insight into this will be much appreciated.

Seeking gravesites for 1) Eliza KIMBRO PERRY, who died in 1867. At the time Eliza lived in NE Bastrop Co. with her husband Benjamin PERRY. Their oldest daughter, Martha Rebecca PERRY BARKER lived at Lexington in Burleson Co. 2) Polly KIMBRO, mother of Eliza Kimbro PERRY. About a year ago, a man wrote me about a grave for a "Mrs. Perry" at the Chriesman Cemetery, but when I went there, I couldn't find the marker. I didn't find a sign there either, though it is still in use. Who would have the burial records for this cemetery? Or, what funeral homes are operating in the area?

Alice Minor Thornton Brown DOB 1882. DOD estimated during years 1921-1930.

Seeking information on Alice Brown, DOB 1882 probably in Fayette County, TX.
She was my grandmother’s older half-sister.
Name is given on the 1920 Federal census as Alice, but my aunts insist it was not that, and in fact on the census record itself it looks like something else (although it begins with an "A" and was transcribed as Alice).

The 1920 census lists her as Alice Thornton, widowed, living in Davilla, Milam county.
Children Era, Louis, Vittoria, Charlie, and Lucy.
We do not know her husband’s first name.

We believe her last child was Charles Alfred Brown, born in Burleson County on 11/18/1921.
Again, we do not know her husband’s first name or where she was buried.

We think she died between 1921 and 1930.
In 1930 her son was listed as living with his grandmother, Hattie Johnson, on the Milam census.
The Thornton girls lived with my grandmother, Ella Minor Hughes, and her family in Milam County.

I did find an Alice Brown listed in the Burleson county probate records between 1911 and 1922, but do not know if that is the same person.

Any help would be appreciated.

William was the son of Henry Vincent and Margaret Jackson, and Lydia was the daughter of Nathaniel Green. In the 1880 census of Burleson county, William, age 18, is listed as the son of Henry and Margaret Vincent. My grandfather, Henry N. Vincent was the son of William and Lydia, but in the 1900 census of Burleson county Henry and his siblings are living with their grandmother Margaret Vincent. Henry N. married Mary Ivey in September of 1900, but I can't find their marriage record. Mary was the daughter of Jarrett Ivey and Donia Alderman. Jarrett Ivey is listed in the 1900 census of Burleson County.

I am trying to find the families of Robert E. GERMAN and his son? William E. GERMAN who arrived in Hix, Burleson County ca. 1890-1910 from Alabama. William had eight surviving children - one son and seven daughters. I believe all of the girls graduated college and became teachers. Three married into local families - SHERRILL, WOOD & GIESENSCHLAG. Does anyone know any more of this family's history?

Those of us supporting the Brazos Bottom Cemetery, located in Tunis, Texas (Burleson County), and its Association, are sending out a call for all interested in preserving this old cemetery before time takes its final toll. Grave markers in the Cemetery contain all the surnames listed.
Due to the hard work of the Association's members, the Cemetery is now listed as a Texas Historical Cemetery. If you are interested in helping, locally or from afar, please email me and I will provide you with further information.

Death of an Old Citizen

Another good citizen and old Confederate veteran joined the majority in the great beyond Monday, when James C. Connolly, aged about 84 years, passed away at the home of his son, T. W. Connolly at Deanville, and his remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1918. He was a good, honest, clever citizen, liked by all who knew him. He joined the Confederate army and served throughout the war in Hood's Brigade. He had been living in Burleson county for fifty-six years. His wife died a few years ago, then his oldest son, Joe, and he has been in feeble health for many months. He is survived by his son, Tom, and stepson, S. G. Moore, both of Deanville, and stepdaughter, Mrs. Ad. Donath of Caldwell. We extend our condolence.

(Burleson County Ledger; Caldwell, Texas; Friday, January 3, 1919; page 3; column 1)
They had Elizabeth who married James Heffington who in turn had my Great Grandmother Agnes "Amanda" Heffington , she married Finley Blackburn Bloodworth and so on. I would like to find out if they are listed in the marriages and deaths for Burleson. The county lines have changed since those times and I am trying to figure out where to look. I have read that in those days they went to Burleson to get married. Finley and Amanda settled in Blue , Lee county Texas. Thank you for your help.

Looking for grave site of John or Jan REPA. Oral family history states John Repa and family moved from Buckholts, Milam Co., TX to Caldwell in '30's or '40's. May be buried in Czech-Moravian Cemetary. Would appreciate any help. Thank you.
Lori Broughton
