I am descended from James Hardy Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Dalton. (Mary Elizabeth Dalton had Cherokee blood, and Sherrod Thomas's grandmother was reportedly a Creek Indian. Sherrod died in Virginia in 1864 serving in the CSA when James Hardy was 8 or so.) All of that side of the family are buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery east of Holder. Decoration Day is always on Mothers Day with food on the grounds after a service -- and with some avid family genealogists in attendance. We owned Byrds Store for several years, and I am related to almost all the oldtimers in the Holder area.

Howdy, Cousins. James Hardy Thomas was may G-grandfather; I am descended via Otis Dewey Thomas and Flossie Jane Jones. I have lost the items I had from the family, but I have relatives who still live at Holder (adjacent to the old Thomas place) and who have MUCH info, photos, etc. I understand some of the Bowden descendants still live at the old Bowden place east of Holder. Give me a holler. Jerome Smith, my uncle, was born in the store at Holder -- with one of the Holders officiating -- and he has a great photo of the Dr, mother, and child. I've heard many stories of Aunt Dora Thomas and Dr. Bowden.

My name is Gary Crossland and my great Aunt was Dora Crossland of Texas. She was listed on the 1900 census as being 4 y/o (best I could read). Her sister Lilly and brother Albert(my grandfather) were living with their cousin Bob Crossland because their parents had died. Her parents would have been John R. Crossland and his wife Carrie (Riley). Grandfather was George A. Crossland and his wife (Matilda). Don't know if this is the same person but Dora Crossland in Texas born 1896-1898 seems likely. Hoped this helps.

Some mo' help! Found a James and Mary Holt in 1920 Greene, TN and had to quickly research the Texas-based family. Seems the family of James H. Holt initially settled in 1900 TX-Williamson-Precinct 3-District 0127-Image 13. They moved to Brown County where James died 22 Sep 1907. Thus the reason for my alarm! If he died in 1907, how could he have been enumerated in 1920 Tennessee? His widow found 1920 TX-Knox-Goree-District 159-Image 10 misidentified "Mich" M. E. Holt(57) with son Eugenie(13) and granddaughter Lorina Glenn (4 7/12). Lorina's mom, Bessie (nee: Holt) Glenn (29 Nov 1882 - 5 Oct 1918) died in Brown County. Mary E. Holt died 28 Oct 1950 also in Brown.

Indeed! Logon https://familysearch.org/ and setup a "free" user account. That will enable access/print of Texas Death Certificates. You'll also find E. I. Christian wed Margaret Holt on 21 Dec 1913 in Brown County. Slightly different from the date you've posted but close enough. There's also the birth record for James Connor Christian born to the couple, 14 Oct 1917. Now then, search for death certificate: Sallie Margaret Christian (19 Sep 1896 - 24 Feb 1978). She died in Brown County and parents identified as James Holt and Mary Elizabeth "Lambarger"(Lineberger) per Theda Busbee-daughter. Mollie E. Lineburger wed James H. Holt, 17 Feb 1881 in Greene, TN. Familysearch has a parental search option. From the homepage, click highlighted "Death" then enter Texas in "Death Place" box. Click highlighted "Parents" then enter James Holt as the father and Mary as the mom without surname. Click "Search" and certificates for other siblings of Margaret will be retrieved.

Anderson in Texas, where they met after she and her 2 young children moved there with Hartwell Milner after Zaida first husband died in 1907. They lived in Plainview,TX is the info I have always heard. Bill anderson worked on a farm outside of town. He had been in WWI. I believe James F.
You can go to www.findagrave.com (FREE site, just have to create an account) and under cemetery lookup, enter Eastlawn, State: Texas, County: search all and someone might have created a cemetery record already for a person you're looking for and most have headstone photos attached to the cemetery record. I've been using and contributing to this site for years. I've been lucky enough to find 90% of my family tree ancestors at this site. If no headstone photo is available, there are people who volunteer to take photos for a certain cemetery or anyone asking for a photo but it's in a area a person doesn't live near.

Annmarie
Southampton, Massachusetts

Hi,

I can't tell you for sure. Mary Piper was born abt. 1830 in Missouri. That's what most of the family trees in Ancestry show. They didn't enumerate everyone in the household until the 1850 Census so I can't verify that.

Most larger libraries provide free access to ancestry.com if you have a local library card. You can enter her name and the various trees come up or search under family trees.

Apparently she married John Hawkins in Franklin Co., Missouri.

Then she married Greanleaf Fisk in 1857 in Williamson Co., TX.

1860 Brown Co., TX but no ethnicity listed on this Census
Greenleaf Frisk, b. NY, 50, stock raiser
Mary, wife, b. MO, 26
Susan hawkins, stepdau, b. MO, 6
Greenleaf Hawkins, b. MO, 3
Robert Chainey, b. MO, 12, domestic.

1880 Precinct 1, Brown co., TX. They are all listed as white.
Green Leaf Fisk, b. NY, 73, farmer
Mary, wife, b. TN, 50
Cicero, b. TX, 19, farmer
Hosy, son, b. TX, 17, farmer
Naomy, b. TX, 15
Mattie, b. TX, 13
Pheby, b. TX, 11
Milton, b. TX, 6

Something about her Indian heritage might have been mentioned in her obituary. She died 11 May 1905, Brownwood, Brown, TX and is buried in Greenleaf Cemetery.

You can contact the Pecan Valley Genealogy Society, http://browncountytexasgenealogy.com/ for a copy of her obituary (hopefully one was published). Carter married Emma Glover November 20, 1898 in Taylor Co., Ga. Emma was a daughter of Francis E. Glover and Pauline Christopher.

Children of Clarence and Emma were:
(1) Frank Glover Carter born 1 Oct 1899 in Reynolds, Ga. and died 30 May 1909 in Zephyr, Brown Co., Tx
(2) Robert Walton Carter born 17 Oct 1902 in Reynolds, Ga. and died 30 May 1909 in Zephyr, Brown Co., TX
(3) Miriam Carter born 25 Dec 1905 in Reynolds, Ga. she survived the cyclone and died in Taylor County, Ga. 13 Feb 1992
(4) Arch Carter born 14 Nov 1908 in Zephyr and died 30 May 1909 in Zephyr, Brown Co., Tx

I have been trying to locate photographs of the damage in the town. Clarence was a merchant.

The two grand fathers went to Texas and buried the dead. I can find no reference to Arch Carter and Miriam Carter in the newspaper accounts.
I'm not related and do courtesy lookups 'cause it is my hobby. Haven't looked for James F. Milner, subject of the original author. Zaida Ann Milner (ca. 1882) was daughter of Hartwell Artemus Milner/Alice Pennington. Hartwell (ca. 1859) was son of John T. Milner/Martha LNU (1837). John T. was son of Richard Milner (ca. 1806) and Sally LNU (ca. 1807). Marriage lookups for Richard Milner/Sally, John T. Milner/Martha, and Hartwell A. Milner/Alice. Too, if death listings are handy: Richard Milner, Sally Milner, and John T. Milner.

(lol) They were not the only ones! I've observed several instances of people enumerated in different states on the same census. Time management? A great(2) uncle sired at least fifteen kids by four women in less than 10 years. This happened before the advent of mechanized harvesting equipment so I'm still wondering how he had time to plant, nurture, and harvest crops? Trust me? You've got the "right" lineage! Find Jacob Anderson's probate for confirmation.

You are right William & Alice are in both the IL and Ok 1910 census. My question is how did they have time to be in the IL census then run to OK and set up house there, with a boarder no less?! Then that boarder ended up marrying Alice. They then went on to KS for a short time before Canada. My dad didn't even know about any of these people.
Yep, they met in TX. For now that's about all I know.

Preachin' to the choir!(lol) My sentiments exactly! After referring others to public trees, I caution them to verify info. Prior to reviewing your tree, I spent a couple of hours looking for William H. H. Anderson. One question I tried to answer, "how did a fellow Kentuckian find a wife in the Texas Panhandle"? There's a bunch of miles between Clay, KY and Hale, TX. Were they acquainted in their home state? Believe they met, in Texas, accidently? My reasoning: evidently William and sister Alice were very close? Unless I'm wrong, they were enumerated twice in 1910. View 1910 IL-Livingston-Forrest-District 0027-Image 5 and 1910 OK-Jackson-Olustree-District 0147-Image 8. I'm theorizing that while in Oklahoma, William's job took him to the Texas Panhandle where he met widowed Zaida. Love story supreme! Add census records and other documentation to your tree.

Thank you for the compliment on my tree! With such a common name as William Anderson I don't want it to be the right name, wrong person. I would hate to add his life info as part of my family without some proof.

It's been a long time since the post but thought I would try anyway. My great uncle was William H. Anderson, he was born in Clay Co., Kentucky in 1888. I believe he was Zaida Ann Milners 2nd husband, her 1st husband was Marion O. Dunman (sp). They would have married about 1918. Any info on them would be great. Thank you.

Thank you all for your advice on this. I am indeed trying to confirm the father of James C Goss. I have been able to eliminate several candidates. I don't think he is the son of James Goss and Margaret Baker. On Family Search there is a marriage listed of a James S Goss listing these as parents. James C is also not the son of Ephraim Goss and Esther ? as on the 1870 census this James is listed as James A. The son of George Washington Goss and Mary is looking like a good candidate so far. There is a Jas C Goss who appears on the 1880 census of Brown Co, Texas living right next door to an Anderson family. I haven't done much research yet into the Anderson side, so I don't know if these are relatives of Mary Anderson or not. The problem with claiming this candidate as the James C I'm looking for, and the son of George W, is that he lists his mother as being born in Indiana, when the wife of George W was born in Kentucky. The age is also a little out, the son of George W, according to earlier census' was born in c1851, the Jas C in Brown Co lists his age as 25, so born c1855 and the gravestone of James C that I've seen on 'Find A Grave' has an actual date of birth for him in 1857! I am aware that dates or places of birth etc on census records are not always accurate, but you know, us genealogists are always looking for proof! :-) Does anyone know if the marriage record on the LDS film will list his father's name? It is a bit vague as to what type of 'marriage record' it is. Has anyone used these records? If these do not contain parents information, can anyone confirm what type of record (if any) would contain it?
Many thanks again for your help! :-)
Catherine
