Looking for information about the family of Jeff and Molcie Davis who lived in Silverton, TX. Jeff Davis was my Great Grandfather and I am looking for information on his Father and Mother, dates of birth and death and where they came from. They would have lived there at the turn of the century and most likely worked putting in oil derricks and natural gas pipelines in and around Silverton, the Panhandle in general and eastern New Mexico. Jeff Davis was my Grandmother Lois Lorene Davis Tidrick's Father. Any information is appreciated.

I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. I am interested in the facts surrounding this case and whether it was a personal feud or duty related. Where is Sheriff LONG buried?

Throop farm near Quitaque

My grandmother Josephine Montgomery Hamm Throop remarried to Robert J. Throop/Throup (pronounced "Troop") in Illinois in 1913. Sometime after 1920 they moved to Texas, where Mr. Throop died in 1938, I am told in Quitaque. I visited my grandmother at the Throop farm twice in the 1950's, which was the last time I saw her. I clearly remember this place, and Quitaque, but I don't know exactly where the farm was. When I go through Quitaque on a road trip, I'd like to drive by. There's probably nothing left of the modest structures, but it was a pleasant memory to revisit if possible.

Anyone know of these Throops? What is a good way to query the location of the Throop farm? I'm told that, from the description, it's probably below the Caprock, and it's possible that it was located in Floyd or Motley County - Quitaque was just the nearest town. Mr. Throop was born in 1871. He had a son Charlie (ca.1901) by his first wife, and children Oren L. (1919), Lella May, Roland C., and Ester Adelia (1921) by my grandmother. I know about his children only from research; no one, including my grandmother, ever told me anything about them. And I know no family source left that would know anything about when she left the farm, or when she died, or what the disposition of the land was. She did say the land was an inheritance (Montgomery, but it may have been Throop land).
In searching for the family of Joel Joseph Chandler b 1850 & 2nd wife Martha J./Mattie Clift b 1862 who migrated from Howard Co., AR about 1920, I found several family members at Resthaven. I did NOT find Joel & Mattie. (They are said to be buried in Floyd Co., TX, but I haven't found them yet.) However, I did find a John L. Chandler (1853-1940) & Mary E. (1859-1935). How are they related to my Joel & Mattie?

James Luther and Minnieola Simpson Burson

I am trying to solve a bit of a mystery regarding my great aunt and her husband. Minnieola Simpson married James Luther Burson in 1923; she was born in 1896, he in 1894. She shows up in the 1920 census in Silverton, living with her family (including my maternal grandfather Doyle Simpson). James Burson showed up in the 1900 census in New Mexico, but no census after that. In the 1930 census Minnieola shows up living with her sister and brother in law, Ethel Simpson Grigg and Ewell Grigg, in Tulia. Here she is listed as Minnieola Burson. My mother related that Uncle James was injured by mustard gas in WW1, and that he spend the rest of his live in a care facility, which I have traced to be in Waco, maybe the VA home there. He died in 1953, and Aunt Minnieola died in 1969 in a car accident, several months after moving back to Tulia from Waco. Both of them are buried in Silverton.
Clearly they married after he served in WW1, but I cannot find any draft registration for him in any state, although I can find Ewell Grigg's and Doyle Simpson's draft cards online. I am very interested in tracing their lives together, especially as they married in spite of his having an apparently debilitating injury which prevented him from living a full and "normal" life.
Both are buried in Silverton.
I have searched extensively on Ancestry dot com, MyFamily dot org, and am only 20 miles from the National Archives in D.C. so could get down there easily if anyone has any suggestions about where to start.
I've emailed or written folks in Silverton, Waco, and Tulia, and have only received their obits.
Thanks in advance,
Maggie Stratton

Killing in Briscoe County around 1900

There was a pitchfork incident resulting in the death of a Mr. Parish around 1901 - 1903. The family lived near Silverton and I assume it was in Briscoe County. Mr. Parish was a first cousin of my father and I'm trying to determine his given name. A Grand Jury found the killing to be justified. Other names involved were Starnes - Hataway - Lovett. What newspaper in the area might have printed the article?

Can someone save me a trip to Texas and the courthouse?

Looking for information on Claude Witherspoon and wife Nora. They first appear in the 1900 Briscoe county census along with children Barton and Vivian. Claude appears again in the 1910 census as a widower living with the mother Sara E. Witherspoon. In addition to Barton and Vivian, a son Louis is listed, born about 1906. Claude and children Barton and Louis listed 1920, living with mother C. Witherspoon. Claude apparently remarried between 1920 and 1930 to Johnnie unknown. They are listed in 1930 along with Louis. Appreciate any information but particularly would like to determine when Claude and Nora died and where they are buried.

I am looking for the daughter of Samuel Jones Clark and Elizabeth Shannon Clark. Her name was Ceresa Clark. She would have been born after 1907, had a sister Ophelia. I don't know Ceresa's married name but approximately 20 years ago they were living in Quintaque.

Her father is buried in Tulia, in the Rose Hill Cemetery next to his mother Nancy Hughes Ragland Clark.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would really appreciate any help I could get. I know it's not much to go on. Sam's line is the elusive line. He died early in life (40) of TB.

Deb

I recently learned my g-g-grandfather, Obadiah Wesley Carter, lived in Silverton in the late 1890's. He was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister from Missouri, and had lived in Texas since about 1860. O. W. was married to Margaret Lucinda Mehaffey, and they had one daughter, Maud Rosalia, who was married in Silverton Dec. 27, 1899 to Franklin D. Galloway. The 1900 census found them all living in neighboring Swisher Co., and farming. I'd like to know more about O. W. and his family and their time in Briscoe Co.

I am looking for descendants of James H. & Lillian Hicks May. James was born in Bossier Parish, Louisiana in 1881 and had a twin sister named Nora. He and Lillie married in 1906 in Bossier Parish. I have recently found them in the 1930 census for Briscoe County with their family. I am interested in getting in touch with descendants of this family to fill in empty spaces in our family knowledge. I am descended from James' brother Alexander and am willing and eager to share information that I have and to learn more about this branch of the family.

Born in Silverton, Texas, January 6, 1926, he was the son?of a farmer. He was interested in electronics from an early age, building radios and telegraphs from spare parts. He was valedictorian of his senior class in Silverton in 1943, and enlisted in the Navy later that year. He attended boot camp in San Diego, and soon, thereafter was accepted into the Naval Academy, where he studied electronics for two years. He sold out his interest to start his own electronics consulting company, Electro Design, a year later, in Kearney Mesa, where he stayed for 37 years. Joe was a consultant for, among others, Hughes Corporation, and most recently, Ektron. He relocated to the South Bay area in 1998, and continued his consulting business and also helped with his son's manufactureing firm.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jo; his children, Diane, David, Dara and Denise, and his seven grandchildren, Josef, Lauren, Julia, Madeline, Donia, Earl and Devon. He was a devoted husband and father, a brilliant and respected engineer, and a fine gardener who will be forever missed.

A celebration of this life will be held at the Community Congregational Church at Pacific Beach. Where may I find maps of this area that have the section no.s of the land on them. Would also like to have a county map, especially of this area and into Hall County and Flomont, Motley Co on the south that would include creeks, roads, etc. If it was 1920's, 1930's, or 1940's would be great. Any help greatly appreciated.
