Bowie Co deputy sheriff Cliff Briley, d. 2 Sept 1909

I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. Dallas Morning News (3 Sept 1909) reports that Bowie Co Pct 1 deputy constable Melvin ANDERSON shot and killed Bowie County deputy sheriff Cliff BRILEY on East Broad street in Texarkana on the Arkansas side in Miller County. DMN (2 Dec 1909) reports ANDERSON was indicted by a Miller County grand jury but proclaimed self defense. I am interested in info about this incident - date of birth, place of burial and family history on BRILEY, and disposition of criminal case against ANDERSON. Any assistance would be appreciated.

It is an area history with family histories of numerous families who lived in an area along the Red River and Lamar County, TX line. Several families had ties to Bowie County, including those listed above, and possibly others. I can supply a website showing the names in my book for anyone interested in learning more about this book.

LEE, Clayborn and Lemonia: AR>Bowie Co., TX>Idabel, McCurtain Co., OK

Searching for any information about the wife of Clayborn Lee. Her name was Lemonia or Lamonia; she was most commonly known as "Monia". Clayborn Lee was born c. 1850 in Louisiana or Arkansas, son of George Lee. Lemonia was born c. 1854 in Texas. They probably married in AR c. 1878.

The family lived in Arkansas; then in Bowie County, Texas; and finally in McCurtain County, Oklahoma. Clayborn died in Boss (McCurtain Co., OK) in 1925.

Lemonia was alive as of the 1920 federal census. She probably died sometime between 1920-1930. The State of Oklahoma claims that there is no record of her death in that state. She may have removed to Texas (or just about anywhere else) at some point before her death.

I am seeking Lemonia's maiden name and parentage. I also am seeking information about her death date and place.

Both Clayborn and Lemonia were of African-American and Native American (Choctaw and/or Cherokee) descent. No one in this family is listed on Dawes Rolls - I already checked. The family was not in Oklahoma during the Dawes Rolls period.

Clayborn and Lemonia had six known children: Arthur Lee, George B. Lee, Elizabeth "Bettie or Sessie" L. Lee, Jezebel Beatrice "J. B." Lee, Mozella Lee, and Luther Bell Lee. One of the sons may have been nicknamed 'Sampie', but which one is unknown. They also had an adopted son named Jack "Bo Lee" Howard.

If anyone recognizes this family, your assistance will be appreciated greatly.

I am looking for information on the death of Laura Ann Allen. She was married to William Thomas Smith and went by the nick name of "Lou".

The information that I have is that she died on December 27, 1933. However, I can find no death record or obituary. The story we grew up with was that she had bent over to light a cigarette in the fireplace and fell in.

Will and Lou are buried (or at least there is a headstone) at New Hope Cemetery in the Bowie/Red River County area.

I believe she was the sister of Henrietta Allen that was married to Eli Burkhead and Richard Clem Tutt.

Rumor also has it that she may have been married before she and Will married. There may have been a son named Edward Charley Nichols or Charley Ed.. Nichols.

The children she had with Will are: Walter, Bertha, Mattie, Ollie (my grandmother), and William Aden Smith.

Any help would be appreciated.

Her brothers were: Herbert, Harold, Normand (?), and Elmer. She had one sister, Hazel. I have not been able to find anything on either Novelle or Hazel. I have a snapshot of Novelle in which she looks to be in her early twenties, so I know she didn't die as a child. I have found death dates for Herbert, Harold, and Elmer in Texas Death Certificates online. All of them died in Texarkana. I would appreciate any information on Novelle and/or Hazel.

Thanks,
Barbara Wilson Dooley
When did Wetz and Evans families come to Bowie County

My father was born in Bowie County in 1924. His parents were Herbert William and Lizzie Evans Wetz. I can't seem to find any census records of my grandparents. I did find a marriage record (1922). I want to know when they came to Bowie County and from where.

I have been told that the Wetz's traveled with Stephen F. Austin to Nacodoches and there they split up. One group went to west Texas and the other came north toward Bowie County.

Can somebody help?

Thanks a bunch.

Does anyone have access to the Discharge Records of the soldiers from WW2 kept at the courthouse? I'm trying to determine if Wm C Barron, serial #38306535, is the same Wm C Barron buried in Sand Hill Cemetery. I am also trying to locate a marriage record between the same Wm Barron and Betty Merline Gauntt, also buried in Sand Hill Cemetery in Simms, TX.
ISO Brian Shipp/Nash Texas/1915 to 1925 (?)

I am in search of information about Brian Shipp. He was my mother's (Willie Marie Shipp, daughter of W T Shipp and Sallie Arrington) half brother (his mother was Frances Hicks, Redlick TX). I have just returned from a family funeral and was told that he died at eighteen, shot by a rival suitor. He must have died around 1918 - 1922 (?). No one alive knows much about the incident. I am hoping to find a date of birth/death and a burial site, perhaps either Nash cemetary or Redlick cemetary. Then maybe I can look thru the newspaper archives. I would appreciate any help, as I live in New Mexico and it is hard to do East Texas research from here. Thank you. Marcia Polansky

HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION

HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION
JULY 25-27, 2008, LEXINGTON, KY

The Phillip Hamman Family Association made up of descendants of Revolutionary War hero, Phillip Hamman, and his wife, Christina Cook, residents of Kentucky for over 40 years beginning in 1782, will be having its Bi-Annual Family Reunion in Lexington, Kentucky July 25-27, 2008.

Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins will be descending upon Lexington from Alabama, Arizona, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and, hopefully, many from all parts of Kentucky, as well as some new cousins from other states.

Headquarters for the reunion will be the Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, 1938 Stanton Way, Lexington, KY. Reservations must be made by June 30, 2008 to get the special Phillip Hamman Group Rate. Visitors may check in as early as July 23 and get the same special room rate. When you call for reservations be sure to tell them that you are part of the Hamman Reunion group and want the special group rate.

Brian Ann Wells Arnett of Versailles, KY is coordinating the reunion and could use some help from any of the Hamman cousins in the Lexington, KY area. For more information, contact Doris Brown Rose, President of the Association, by Email: rose0303@att.net

You don’t have to be registered at the hotel to participate in the reunion events, but reservations for the Saturday night banquet should be made by those not staying at the hotel. You can contact Doris Brown Rose at the above email address to make those banquet reservations.

Friday, July 25, a group trip is planned to Mt. Sterling, then to Slate Creek near Jeffersonville, Montgomery County, to visit the site where Phillip Hamman and Christina Cook lived for almost 40 years, followed by a group meeting at 7:00p.m. Friday night for the sharing of newly revised family group sheets for each of Phillip and Christina’s children. Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. will be the business meeting for the election of new officers, followed by the sharing of new family history discoveries from members and guests. A highlight of the reunion is always the banquet on Saturday night. The special guest speaker at the Saturday night banquet will be Charles E. Darnell, descendant of Henry Cook, brother of Christina Cook Hamman.

The reunion is also open to all Hamman, Hammond(s), or any other variation of the spelling of that surname, even if you are not a descendant of Phillip and Christina.

Anyone who is a descendant of Phillip Hamman who is interested in becoming a member of DAR or SAR might especially want to attend this reunion. One member of the Association, Beverly Jay Martin, is a DAR Genealogy Consultant, has generously offered to help anyone who needs help with the application process. The service for Phillip Hamman has already been proven, as have the lines of each of his children, so it is a minor thing to get the papers in order for applying for membership in either organization. At the present time there are 88 descendants of Phillip Hamman in the DAR Descendants Database. Also, children from birth to age 21 can become members of CAR, Children of the American Revolution. The Phillip Hamman Chapter of CAR, located in Jackson, Breathitt County, KY, was named for our ancestor. James Bach Strohmeier, a former president of the Phillip Hamman Family Association, is now serving as its Senior Advisor/Sponsor. He would love to have some additions to his chapter.

This is only the fourth time in the 37 year history of the Phillip Hamman Family Association that the reunion has been held in Kentucky. The previous Kentucky based reunions were in Louisville in 1974, and in Lexington in 1982 and 1994. So, all of you Kentucky Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins might want to mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend this year’s reunion as it will probably be at least ten years before the next one will be back in Kentucky. Other reunions have been held in Chattanooga, TN; Little Rock, AR; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, Washington; Corinth, MS; two meetings in Oklahoma City, OK; two in Dallas, TX; two in San Francisco, CA; and four meetings in Alabama in the towns of Fort Payne, Guntersville, and twice in Huntsville.

The Phillip Hamman Family Association was formed in 1971 with the dedicated purpose of (1) gathering data about the family of Phillip and Christina Hamman and their descendants, (2) creating a giant database of information on the family to be shared by all, (3) locating the graves of all of the children of Phillip and Christina and placing markers on those that were unmarked or “poorly marked”, (4) to hold a reunion every two years, and (5) to publish a semi-annual newsletter as a means of keeping in touch with members on a regular basis. Because of the dedicated work of many Hamman cousins, all the purposes of the Association have been met, especially in the area of locating the descendants of Phillip and Christina. At the present time there are over 17,000 proven descendants who have been identified.

In recent years, the family researchers have also greatly increased their efforts to obtain information on the descendants of Valentine Cook and Anna “Susannah” Baughman, parents of Christina Cook, and the associations’s database on this family has been growing also.

CHILDREN OF PHILLIP HAMMAN & CHRISTINA COOK:
1.
STONE OBITS FROM BOWIE CO

Looking for obituaries and/or death certificates for John A. and Samuel P. Stone. Both are buried in Center Ridge Cemetery, in Maud.

Also, if there is any information on their father, Micajah Stone, who died between the 1800 and 1900 census, possibly in Miller Co. AR, it would be a huge help.

John A. and Samuel P. Stone, along with their brother Marion emigrated c1872 from Anderson Co. SC with their family. Their father, Micajah Stone, was born in SC c1828. He was married to a woman named Tempe, who died <1880, then to a woman named Charlotte. The family is evident in the 1800 census in Miller Co., but most members show up subsequently in Bowie and Cass Co.

If anyone has information on these Stones, please contact me at: Steve.Stone@supshipgc.navy.mil

This family is a bit of a mystery. They are co-located with my own Stones in the same towns in Anderson Co. SC and Cass Co. TX and appear to have migrated to TX at exactly the same time. However, I have yet to figure out how to link them. Obituaries and death certificates may provide additional clues.

Many thanks!

Steve Stone
Pascagoula MS

While going through the Woodmen Cemetery it became obvious that the earliest burial was about 1900.

Does anyone have any idea where the Dekalb residents from 1848 to 1900 were buried?

Morrow Family

I am searching for information on the William Gill Morrow family that lived in the Texarkana area in the very early 1900's. They came to Texas from Alabama about 1905. I have been told that Mr Morrow had a sister & brother-in-law living also living in the Texarkana area, Effie & Johnny Mitchell. William Gill Morrow was married to Eugenia Boggs. They had 5 children in Alabama: Sarah Pearl, Arthur W., William Collie, Esther Amanda, and Edmund Harper. Eugenia died in 1904 in Alabama. Mr Morrow then married Alice (Wise) Ward & they had 1 daughter in 1908. They left the Texarkana area about 1909, moving to Stanton TX, then returned to Texarkana area for about 1 year in about 1918. Alice is the connection I am really researching. I am particularly trying to find when and where she marrired Mr Morrow. I have been told she was married to a Mr Ward before she married Mr Morrow. Please contact me if you may have any connection to this family.

POW/MIA Korean War. Bowie Co. MURGA, TYLER

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Bowie County, Texas as their home of record.

JOSEPH HUMBERT MURGA*
JULY 30, 1930. Caucasian
DOL November 30, 1050

MAXINE N TYLER
Born: August 25, 1925. Black
DOL December 19, 1950

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 140 families from Texas that have not been located. There are two families from Bowie County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I was born, February 14, 1951, Texarkana, TX. This is my initial search for my biological roots; because I remain timid to not question my paternal side, apprehension has me extremely cautious with this venture: However, now that I am over the half century mark and this question rides me all the time, seeking some resolve of my own is all I know to do. Maternal-Mary Ellayne Cannon married Tennesse (Timothy) Jones. Presumably-Herbert Hillburn attended Wiley College is biological father. Wish me God's blessings, luck and a pleasant outcome! Thanks, Jerri.

I am looking for obituaries for a couple of my husband's relatives. I found some of their information on a website for the Center Ridge Cemetary in Maud. The information was collected from the tombstone.

Prince "Pat" Patterson b. 10 Aug 1916 d. 24 Mar 1994 (I assume in Maud or somewhere in Bowie Cty)

Ellen (Onken) Patterson b. 10 Apr 1918 d. 15 Jul 1999 (Again, I assume in Maud or somewhere in Bowie Cty)

I have tried a few obituary look-up sites, but have found nothing. Seeing as the deaths occured a few years ago, I do not hope to find newspaper archives going back that far.

I know nothing about "Pat" except that he was possibly born in TX. I am researching Ellen's line. I have a bit of information on the Onkens. Apparently, Pat and Ellen have lived in Texas for much of their lives.

Please help if you can. I believe the local paper in the area is the Texarkana Gazette. Thank you.

Victoria

The information I'm looking for is in addition to what I already know from the 1880 Census. I doubt that there is anything to be gained by any more Internet searches. What I really need is to find someone who probably does not have Internet access. At the moment I would like to know if there is a genealogical society in Texas that could advise me on how I could best obtain information that might not be available on the Internet. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Onie was our grandfather, Joe F. Burks, sister. She is listed in the 1910 Bowie County Cencus but not in the 1920. She was married to a John E. Evans and they had a 3 month old son named Alfred in the 1910 census but by the 1920 census John has remarried to an Addie. Alfred is still listed on this census. We would like to find an obituary for Onie Evans as this would tell us where she is buried. If any one has any information about this lady please email me at my home address.

on 1900 Census in Bowie Co. TX. I found a Yerbey W. Wilson, b. 1850 Al. father b. GA and mother b. AL. Dau, CORA WILSON, B. JAN 1890, AR. & son JOHN WILSON, B. AUG 1892. TX. MY GGGrandfather, Yerby W. Wilson b. spring 1850 in Blount Co. Al moved to Ellis Co TX in 1870 m. Mary Kessiah BYNUM and fathered 4 children. Around 1880-1882 he disappeared and family has never known what happened to him. The information on the 1900 census coincides with our Yerby W. Wilson. On the 1910 Bowie Co. census, he seems to be enumerated as "ERO" Wilson but looking at the original image I read it as "Erb" nickname for Yerby. Cora is not with the family, but son John is. There is a 1917 draft card completed by John W. Wilson born Aug 12, 1892 in Bowie Co. TX. I cannot read the name of the town. On the draft card, John states he is supporting a wife and a father. This person seems to be the person on the 1900 and 1910 census'.Searching for any informaion on YERBY, CORA OR JOHN W. WILSON-will appreciate any help. thank you.

E. Cain, and he was married at the time to a HOOKING, Mattie on 01-02-1902 in Bowie County.
I have no idea where they lived or anything, I do know that mattie remarried a C. E. ELLISON, on this date, 01-02-1913 and they moved to California, he is supposed to have siblings also but I don't know anything about them..
Any help will be greatly appreciated..
The only thing I know about my great grandfather is that his name was Frank Wilson and he married Louisa Wisdom in Bowie County, Texas in 1891. They had one child, my grandmother Ameda Wilson born in 1893. Supposedly, either before she was born or when she was a baby, her father, Frank Wilson, drowned. Her mother remarried John C Myricks, but my grandmother kept her Wilson name. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I would appreciate any leads you might have.
