Captain Charles B. Underhill

Looking for any information on Captain Charles Underhill in Bosque County, Texas. He and wife Martha appear to have got divorced after 1860. He remained in Bosque County where in 1860 he was on the census, and she and their two children were in Robertson County. I would be interested in descendants and burial places of Charles and Martha. What happened to them after 1860? They married in Brazoria County and lived in Galveston County in 1850. He married after the divorce, to Margaret Ann McKenzie (in Bosque County?).

Captain Richard Sanderson 1641-1718

I have traced my line back to Capt. Richard Sanderson (1641-1718). I believe it goes like this: John R. Sanderson > John F. Sanderson> John W. Sanderson>John Sanderson>Isaac Sanderson>Shadrack Sanderson>Joseph Sanderson>Benjamin Sanderson>Joseph Sanderson>Richard Sanderson.

I am fairly certain of the line except for Shadrack Sanderson (Could be his brother Thomas Sanderson), but it still ends at Richard Sanderson. I have seen some trees give Robert Sanderson of New England as the Father of Richard Sanderson, but I have searched the records in New England, and find no evidence that Robert had a son named Richard.

My Father and other relatives seemed to think that our ancestors came from Scotland. So far, I have hit a brick wall at Richard. Anyone have any evidence on this? I guess my feeling now is that the NC Sandersons came from Scotland, and the NE Sandersons came from England.

That should give you a good start? They are clearly linked by geography and time. Believe the Sawyers and Laswells knew each other prior to their arrival in Texas? There are pedigrees viewable at family search.org on Allan Laswell (by: Jim Culver of Austin, TX) and William G. Sawyer (by: Tanya Gilliam Griffin of Brashear, TX). Both men married in Weakley County, TN.

Where do you want to begin? I am not related! Start with online death certificates viewable at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start His wife was Zollie Mae (Ivey) Sawyer (30 Jul 1884 - 24 Nov 1971). His mother was Frances Udora (Laswell) Sawyer (27 Feb 1850 - 27 Nov 1920). His father was Jesse E. Sawyer(born about 1848 and died prior to 1900). View his son M. C. (Maurice) Sawyer's certificate (14 Jun 1912 - 8 Oct 1941). View his certificate (25 Feb 1884 - 4 Nov 1950). View his siblings: Albert Bernard Sawyer (14 Jun 1886 - 26 Feb 1940), Harve M. Sawyer (30 Mar 1877 - 7 May 1961), Beatrice Hatler (25 Mar 1870 - 24 Jun 1953), Ina Maude Bowmar (18 Jun 1879 - 5 Jan 1954), Maggie Coker (26 Sep 1881 - 30 Dec 1942), and Winnie Bullock (20 Dec 1888 - 8 Dec 1934). I searched in vain for an online family tree to simplify this process. Guess you'll just have to acquire some research skills, huh? Find the Las(s)well family in 1860 Limestone-Not Stated-Page 18. Find the Sawyers in 1860 Wood-Precinct 7-Page 1. In 1870, both families were in Limestone-District 48 West Texas. The newlyweds Jesse and Francis Sawyer are on page 21 while her parents and siblings are on page 140. Both families were in 1880 Bosque-Not Stated-District 9-Page 12. This appeared to be the place where they established firm roots? Need additional assistance, holler?

Joseph was my ggg-grandfather through Orrin Lemon Sherry father of Mary Jane Sherry (my great-grandmother).

Thanks for the info on the land grant. I have heard about it but didn't know where to find it. I connected with another cousin that is trying to locate Sarah's grave and get a marker put on it.

Thanks again and would love to chat.

Debra Beach
dsbeachtx@charter.net

Joseph Lewis Sherry (McSherry) was my greatgrandpa several times removed. i have not found his birth record as of yet. His birthdate is January 07, 1933 and his death May 27, 1865 I also have oct. 19, 1865 he was a Confederate Prisoner of war at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois and buried there. Joseph's has been listed several ways. i have found john jr. and many others but to my best knowledge his true name is the one above. i do have a copy of a document which you can find under Power & Hewetson Colony Land on page 13 or 14. the mexican gov't gave a land grant to John McSherry son Joseph McSherry later Sherry. Also, information is online at 1828 DeWitt Colony Census-Surnames H-N under Hibbens the second of four husbands of sarah Creath. I could go on all day but let me know if that helps. I do have the lineage from joseph to rita (me). keep in touch maybe i could pick your brain when i find gaps in my. tata for now. love ya your relative rita

I have a copy in my file from John Andrew Thomas, my great-great grandfather, as he fought in this battle.

Handbook of Texas Online: Dove Creek, Battle of
DOVE CREEK, BATTLE OF. In the controversial battle of Dove Creek on January 8, 1865, about 160 Confederates and 325 state militiamen attacked a large encampment of migrating Kickapoo Indians some twenty miles southwest of the site of present San Angelo. The Texans were routed after a desparate fight. On December9, 1864, Capt. N.M. Gillintine (Gillentine) and a militia scouting party of twenty-three, under command of the Second Frontier District, discovered an abandoned Indian camp. Gillintine reported that it had ninety-two wigwam sites and was located about thirty miles up the Clear Fork of the Brazos River from the ruins of old Fort Phantom Hill. A militia force of about 325 men from Bosque, Comanche, Coryell, Erath, and Johnson counties gathered under Capt. S.S. Totten (Totton). State Conferedate troops of the Frontier Battalion were dispatched under Capt. Henry Fossett.
From the beginning the two forces neglected to cooperate fully or agree upon a unified command. After waiting two days at Fort Chadbourne for a rendezvous that never took place, Fossett impatiently set out on January 3 with 161 men and followed a broad trail to the North Concho River and beyond. Four days later his scouts found the Indians, whom they assumed to be hostile Comanches or Kiowas, encamped in timber along Dove Creek. As Fossett prepared to strike, Totten's delayed militia arrived early in the morning of January 8. Some historians have argued that by then the leader should have realized that the Indians were peaceful. Operating on the frontier assumption that all Indians were dangerous, however, the two commanders hastily formed a battle plan that was afterward critized as inadequate and based on poor reconnaissance. The militia, on horses weary from a forced march, were to dismount and wade the creek for a frontal attack from the north. The Confederate troops were to circle southwestward, capture the grazing herd of horses, and attack from the lower side, thus cutting off an Indian retreat.
The attack went badly. Fossett later estimated the Indian fighting force at between 400 and 600. Totten said 600 and charged that Union jayhawkers were among them. The Indians' position in a heavy thicket was superior, for it gave the well-armed defenders cover, high ground, and a good field of fire. The militiamen were slowed by the creek, heavy briars, and brush. Participant I.D. Ferguson later recounted the fatal wounding of three officers, including Gillintine, and sixteen enlisted men in the opening minutes. The militia was soon routed and out of the battle.
Meanwhile, Fossett's mounted force quickly captured the Indian horses. He dispatched seventy-five troops under Lt. J.A. Brooks to hit the camp from the south, but they were repulsed by heavy fire that cost them twelve horses. The Confederate troops took positions in the timber and continued the fight; they were caught in a crossfire and separated into three groups as the Indians closed in under cover. An Indian counterattack early in the afternoon was repulsed, and the battle continued until almost dark before ending in disorder and confusion. The Indians recaptured their horses and inflicted additional casualties on the Confederates retreating toward Totten's militia, which was tending to the wounded three miles away on Spring Creek. The battered veterans spent a miserable night, drenched by chilling rain that turned to heavy snow. They remained the next day, cold and hungry, forced to eat some of the horses to survive. A casualty count showed twenty-two dead and nineteen wounded. An exact number was never known because many militiamen departed without leave. Indian casualties were even less certain. Totten said they numbered more than a hundred. Fossett gave a body count of twenty-three. The Indians, after crossing the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, said they had lost twelve in the fight and two more who died after arrival in Mexico.
Carrying their wounded on crude litters strapped between pairs of horses, the Texans retreated eastward on January 11, after retrieving their dead. They found shelter and food at John S. Chisum'sqv ranch near the confluence of the Concho and Colorado rivers.
The Kickapoos had been on their way to Mexico to escape the dissension and violence of the Civil War.qv The battle embittered this peaceful tribe and led to vengeful border raiding from the sanctuary given them by the Mexican government near Santa Rosa, Coahuila. White settlers along the Rio Grande paid heavily for the misjudgements that led to the Texan's defeat on Dove Creek. Col.Ranald S. Mackenzieqv finally led 377 men of the Fourth United States Calvaryqv from Fort Clark on a punitive expedition across the Rio Grande in May 1873. Hostilities declined thereafter.
BIBLIOGRAPHY: William C. Pool, "The Battle of Dove Creek," Southwestern Historical Quarterly 53 (April 1950). Ernest Wallace, Ranald S. Mackenzie on the Texas Frontier (Lubbock:West Texas Musuem Association, 1964).
Elmer Kelton
His father was Wetheral Latimer who died in Pope Co, Ark and his mother was Margeret, who was his first wife. After she died he married a woman named Abilgail and had more childern & lived in Clarksville for a while. There is an Obituary for him in the newspaper in the town he died in, but I don't have that information with me. Robert Wetheral Latimer was my great, great, great Grandfather. I have through letters from A.M. Truitt, who was married to Minta or Minnie Latimer Truitt (Robert & Nancy's youngest daughter), found out that Robert died in Brownwood. A.M. Truitt called him "Old man Latimer". He was pretty nomatic, going to the next prosperous place. Bosque County in 1880 was the place to be after the Civil War and Reconstruction. His son Thomas Latimer and son-n-law A.M.Truitt took their families and hit the road with Robert and Nancy. I haven't found out where Nancy is buried yet but I am trying to get in touch with the Thomas Latimer group that travel with them. My great, great grandfather was James Robert, his wife was Emily Jane Porter Latimer; great grandfather is Luther B. "Pete" Latimer, his wife Fannie Mahaya Black Latimer; grandfather John Tom Latimer, wife Eva Samford Latimer; father Johnnie Glenn Latimer, mother Norrie F. Cooper Latimer. Everyone, except for my mother are buried at the Truitt cemetery in Shelby Co, Tx. Which child of Robert W. Latimer are you through? Send me your email and I can sen you the information I have. My aunt has sketches of the Plantation in La. that they lived for awhile.
Tina Latimer DuBose

I'm looking for the marriage of Ellen (sometimes called Emma) Rizer and Joe Cates/Crates/Crate/Coates. Ellen was born 1896 in Bosque county and was the daughter of John Henry Rizer and Evelina Rainbolt.

I found them once on a census record and it's hard to read what his last name was.

Thanks in advance
Sandra Van Wyk

I have pictures of Radford and Malisha and I also have a family picture of Narcissus & Allen Neal Thompson's family taken about 1895 as well as other pictures.
Since I first submitted my request I have learned several facts. The surname of my Milisha was DEADMAN and not Desmond as I earlier thought. Her parents were Thomas & Elizabeth MILLIORN DEADMAN. William & Malisha were married on 29 Jun 1844 in Marion Co., IL. I have been to the old homestead and cemetery in Marion Co., IL and have quite a bit of data on that side of the family now. I still have not been able to get past Radford M WELCH. I have pictures of Radford & Malisha, some of their children and a lot of their descendants.

Hi jhicklen,
You would need to provide more info, dates, marriages, and deaths, locations ect. Anything more you could provide would help researchers to locate your family member. Try posting about the person connected to her, that you do have info on. It can be worked back that way.

The only thing I was able to locate was an Annie Belle Moore, who,s father was a Cox, and mother was a Sarah Loder, who died in 1956, in Richland Hills, Texas. Not sure if she is your Annie, being this is not Bosque Co Texas. You might try this website with info you have and see if you can find something helpful. Good luck, vidia.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#search...

Re: Joseph Claybrook family

About Anne Rodes Broaddus Claybrook: I have information from one person who says she was born February 08, 1827, in Virginia, but the 1880 Arkansas census said she and her parents were born in Kentucky (as does the 1860 Mo. census cited here).

She apparently had a prior marriage; 1880 Arkansas census shows W.H.C. Broaddus (1847-?) as stepson of W.P.D. Claybrook. I'm guessing that Rodes was her maiden name.

About Mary Wingfield Claybrook Barry: I show her born December 1, 1828, in Washington Co., KY (probably the town of Texas). She married Griffith Coombe Barry. She died September 27, 1883 in Bosque Co., TX.

About "C F Claybro[o]k" and "Rhoda Ann [Lane]": I am very curious about them. I have no information on either, although there was a Margaret R A Lane (1840-1873) who was C R Claybrook's second wife (and I'm eagerly looking for more information about her). C R's third wife (married four months after Margaret's death) was Sara Anne McKissick (1840-1929).

I suspect that "Rhoda Ann" is the same person as "Margaret R A" and that "C F" is really C R, who was also a blacksmith, born in KY in 1831/2.

About the 1880 "R C Claybrook": That's definitely C R.

About Margaret Claybrook and Charles Rush: They were my grandparents.
Do you have any further information about this daughter and her husband?

Babe Greer's parents-in-law were my ggg-grandparents, but very removed from my Rush line. It would be fascinating to show that my Lanes and Rushes had known each other that far back.
