If anyone on this board knows what the Rev James Gibson did between 1834, when he resigned as Presbyterian minister in Lislooney (/Lisluney) owing to ill-health, and his death in 1866, I'd be interested in knowing. He is the most plausible candidate for the "Rev Mr Gibson" who married my gt-gt-grandfather, Jeremian Taylor Andrews, to Martha Rogers "of Armagh" in July 1835. Needless to say, finding any record of the marriage in any register is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Sorry, I don't have even a mention of a Cinderell Jarrell Brown in my tree. The Hillyards are as far away from my direct line as I go and that was to explain the middle name of Hurley for one of my uncles. The notes are just about the death of Henry Hurley Hillyard's parents and then his own death and burial in Arlington National Cem.

I am still working on my project to document everyone in Killeen City Cemetery. Today I found a group of graves that have stone markers, but only initials. The cemetery office has no more information on them. There are four graves with the same type markers, last initial H. I believe they are children, as the area they are in are very small graves. Probably won't be able to find anything in the census records, even if I knew their last name. Other graves immediately around them dated 1880s, then to 1920's/30's. Would appreciate any leads on identifying these babies.

Dear Mike and Nancy Kelsey; I'm hoping you can help me with a question.John Robert Craddock and Sam Houston, are they related? In their later years they look similiar. The family knew each other before they came to America.I've searched with no luck. They were friends and worked together, but I think their related. You have a book in your Library by Uda Faye Wheeler, Weathersbee Childers and Craddock,John and family are on their porch, a house on the hwy from Heidenheimer to Belton that turns into 6th ave in Belton. When you turn on the rd at Heidenheimer about 2-3 miles down on the right, the house looks like the one in the picture.Family told me it's his home,is it?If the family there agrees, could we place a Historical Marker there?Goldsby Childers and Robert owned a lot of land in Milam and Bell Co.If anyone would know, it would be ya'll.Hope to hear from you. Thanks Virginia Bennett

Turner's death in 1918 and any information about Sidney Turner, B. 1852 in Coosa County, AL. I'm trying to fill in a gap created by Silas H. Turner (married Jane Rogers, Troup County, GA 1848) and the family's arrival in Texas (date unknown). Sidney married Nannie Thompson in Bell County. Silas stayed in GA but neither his nor Sidney's death dates are available. Thanks!

The Page's in Bell County evolved into a tangled mess. William Walter Page seems to have been a cook for the better part of his life. I think his diner in Ft. Worth was made from an old train car...I'll have to ask my Dad. Evidently, Carl Edward from Bessie may have been a cook as well, so that is Carla Page's insert into the family tree. Unfortunately, my Grandfather Walter Frederick really had nothing to do with the Page family in Ft. Worth. I'm sure many of those people are still there.

Yes, my mother confirmed this morning that Kate was a Payne. But there seems to be a couple of Dave, David Wood in Belton that were known to Katherine Valeria Chalk (sister to Robert Lewis Chalk). I'll look into this. Thank you for this information! Blessings.

At least my work week has just been reduced from 40 to 36 hours per week. :)

Yes, I belong to the James McHenry Chapter in San Antonio, National Number 743994, under the Chalk line. That John Hart line is under Annie Butcher from Iowa, first wife of Robert Chalk. Our line goes under Robert Lewis Chalk, 2nd spouse, Sophia Walker Manning Gray. Last time I looked at the John Hart issue, there seemed to be some discepancy that the DAR wants to have cleared up.

I'm going to my parents this week, and see if I can't get some digital photos of my grandparent's photos. My Grandmother Nora definitely has the Chalk look about her when I found other pictures.

There were a pre-nuptial signed between Sophia Walker Manning and R.L. Chalk which we found at the Belton court house. I'm not sure what was going on, but they may have been separated before his death. He was living in San Antonio with Minna before he died. His body was brought back to Belton for burial with his first wife. Sophia sent Nora alone by train from Killeen to Belton, at the age of 13 to her father's burial. However, Sophia records herself as "widow" after Robert's death. We have one picture of a young Nora, and I believe there were two letters from her father.

I have the golden locket Robert gave her at age 6 that was on the Christmas tree. It has an English "N" engraved on it, and it opens to hold photos.

Noralyn Page Ripps

Unless you own the company, you've got to transfer "off" the night shift! Twenty years is too long! Your health will suffer as well as interpersonal relationships! My daughter-in-law, a registered nurse, works the weekend option so that she can take "care" of my grandkids! Bull! The kids would be better "off" in a non-abusive day care facility! She's usually too tired to even prepare balanced meals so the trade-off is negated. Anyway, do you belong to DAR? The research has already been done by another Texan. John Hart of New Jersey was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His heritage includes Anna Margaret Butcher who wed Robert Lewis Chalk.

Another enigma solved! Kate Wood, aunt, aka Mary Catherine Payne age 20 on previously cited 1880 Bell Census. Familysearch indicates David Wood wed M. C. Payne, 21 Jun 1885. Find them 1900 Bell-Belton-District 0016-Image 7. Add an "s" to the surname for 1910 Bell-Belton Ward 3-0003-Image 5. Per familysearch Jewell Wood wed Oliver "Hall", 16 Dec 1908. Actually, he was Ernest Oliver Hale born 5 May 1888 per WWI Draft Card. Two of the other Payne sisters wed surname Hallmark(s) but I have not pursued research.

You're welcome Gloria!
No, unfortunately the Nathaniel's are not one in the same, I've beat that lead to death. LOL But I do believe that they are both descendents of a common ancestor in Maryland. Our line of Croppers left MD for KY, then our line through Elisha came down to MS, then TX and settled in LA around 1840. I think he traveled down the Mississippi River from KY originally. He fought for TX's independence 1836 and you can find him listed in the TX state archives online. Elisha G. Cropper or sometimes just E. G. Cropper is how he is listed. From his enlistment papers in the TX Army we found him described as 5'10" tall, had grey eyes and red hair! During the Civil War Elisha brought his family to Magnolia, Pike Co., MS where worked in construction, I think for the RR. He was a carpenter and brick mason. He served in a minor capacity blowing a bugle at age 45 in the home guard of the Confederate Army there. After the war he returned to St. Landry Parish where he eventually died in 1872. I think it was through carpentry that he met Robert Lamberth who was enumerated with his family in 1870 in that parish. Robert married Elisha's daughter Letha. I have a photos of Letha and William, but not their brother Nathaniel. He and his wife both perished in a house fire and their 3 children were dispersed among relatives. There is mention in a court book of proceedings of a case heard regarding the children, but unfortunately the details of the case were lost in a terrible fire in Lake Charles that burned a whole block of buildings in 1910, including the court house.

Somehow, my response didn't get posted. Thank you for the information about JG Payne and info on Carrie Thames (Thomas). I added the information, and updated the William Walter Page information and children. My Grandfather Walter Frederick Page evidently lived with a Kate Wood (an aunt) in Belton. According to my father, after Martha Payne died 1903, some of the boys were placed in an orphanage. WF and Leta were taken in by this Aunt Kate Woods for awhile. This was an Aunt that lived across the street from Kate Valeria Chalk Powers in Belton. The two Kates introduced WF Page to Nora Chalk.

One part of the enigma solved. J. G. Payne was Martha's pop thus Walter Page's father-in-law. Martha's mom was Carrie Thames born ca. 1839 in Louisiana. They, "Thames", are difficult to trace because surname often interpreted as "Thomas". Find them 1880 Bell-Precinct 6-007-Image 3 as surname "Pane". W. W. Page wed M. E. Payne, 3 Aug 1893 in Anderson County. J. G. (guessing Jesse G. 'cause there was a son with that name) paid taxes in Bell so there has to be other records?

I work night shift, and this is the first time in almost 20 years that I have had time for genealogy. The last time I was in Belton was almost 20 years ago at that library. Am not finished with the tree in any way. I just started this up "this" week to track down my husband's Hull/Douglas family and get it updated down to the Sawyer line. The Chalk line is well documented, and I will add it as I have access to time. :)

The Page line is a problem because Walter Frederick's mother, Martha Payne died when he was a little boy. He had access to Leta and Roderick for the most part when he was older, but there were some family problems later where he did not converse much with them after the death of his father.

One enigma that we have found is the presence of the headmarker of J.G. Payne in the same burial plot of William Roscoe Chalk and Frances Ombsy Blackburn in the South Belton Cemetery. We don't know if this is the husband or relative of Martha Payne, and if so, why would it be there? And who is he?

Thanks.

Those will be in there tomorrow.

I just started hacking away at all of this again this week putting this up on Ancestry. My Grandmother Nora was very close to Minna and Lelia. However, her half-sister Della was not ever appreciative of the relationship. Lelia and Minna never lived that far apart from one another. Lelia and Minna lived down here in San Antonio (In fact, Minna signed my husband's Grandmother and Great-Grandmother's DAR papers as State Regent, and she personally knew the two women who joined the Alamo Chapter. Also, Robert Lewis Chalk died in San Antonio of a ruptured gallbladder. Minna had a stroke and passed down here. Lelia's daughter, Mary married a Ruckman from Karnes City. Her son, Trip still lives in Karnes City. Lelia and perhaps Madge Matthews of Belton plus probably Toncie Young of Killeen (to name just a couple of cousins) left "bread crumbs" in that public library in Belton. Minna started a genealogy library in San Antonio, those articles can be found at San Antonio College, downtown San Antonio.
Noralyn Page Ripps

Appreciate your seperate response! When I viewed your tree, I noticed two children of R. L. Chalk were not included. They were: Lelia Blanche Dalton (2 Jan 1883 - 25 Apr 1975) and Robert Lee Chalk (3 May 1878 - 25 May 1878). I also observed incomplete lifespans for some of the Page children of Walter and some of the kids were listed under both wives. Anyway, ignore info you already possess? Granville Roderick Page (27 Jan 1893 - 18 Jun 1964), Walter Frederick Page (1895 - 22 Jul 1975), William David Page (11 May 1899 - 14 May 1974), and Leta May Kimbrel (1903-1986) were born to Martha Payne. Oakley Alfred Page(12 Nov 1906 - 3 Mar 1974), Arthur C. Page (29 Jun 1910 - 19 Dec 1968), Robert Arnold Page (24 Sep 1913 - 20 Apr 1977), Carl Edward Page (9 Feb 1914 - Nov 1971), Charles A. Page (29 Dec 1920 - 23 Aug 1976), Harvey Wilbur Page (12 Apr 1923 - 18 May 1971), and Ethel Mae Logsdon (born 30 Apr 1928) were born to Bessie Anita (nee: Sedberry) Page (11 Aug 1888 - 20 Nov 1961).

This is information that I have shared with Carla Page several years ago regarding the Chalk-Page lineage. However, this is really disheartening that I have to repeat this information again, as so much of it was incorrectly recorded in Ancestry.com

From William Roscoe Chalk descends a first born son, Robert Lewis Chalk.

My Grandmother, Nora Ethel Chalk Page (only child of the marriage of Robert Lewis Chalk and Sophia Walker Manning, 2nd spouse for both) was married to Walter Frederick Page (born at The Flat, located near Lake Belton).

For more information about Nora Ethel Chalk, see page 118 of the book, The Chalk Family of England and America, 1066-1942.

Nora Ethel Chalk Page died in Olney, Texas, and is buried next to my Grandfather in the Killeen City Cemetery. Her mother, Sophia Josephine Walker Manning Chalk” is buried in the same plot. Robert Lewis Chalk is buried in the South Belton Cemetery on Penelope St. next to his first wife, Annie Butcher.

My Grandfather, Walter Frederick Page, often wrote his name as W.F. Page or Walter F. Page. His father was Walter William Page, who died in Ft. Worth, TX. Walter William Page’s father, Stephen (Steven) Page was born in Florida. This branch of Texas Page family members came out of Florida…not Tennessee. Florida has many Page’s who settled there when the state opened in 1820.

Nora Ethel Chalk Page’s half-sister, Sarah Minna Chalk Scott Hyman was the author of the Chalk Family of England and America, 1066-1942. Sarah Minna was called “Minna” for short. Minna is the daughter of Annie Butcher (first spouse) and Robert Lewis Chalk. For more information about “Minna” see the above mentioned book, page 114.

Minna wrote in full about the Texas Branch of the Chalk Family that came out of North Carolina, into Maury County, TN and into Bell County, Texas. The Chalks along with the Blackburns packed up the farm and came to Texas en masse. One can find information about our ancestors descended from William Roscoe Chalk and Frances Omsby Blackburn on page 113 of the aforementioned book.

Also, to add further to the confusion, the second son of William Roscoe Chalk and Frances Omsby Blackburn, John William Douglas Chalk had a daughter named: Nora Elizabeth Chalk, born 26Dec1872, died 12Aug1940. Her only child died in infancy. She lived in Belton, TX as well. See the Chalk Family book, page 118.

I believe there is a presumption that a Nora “C.” Page is Nora Chalk Page. Not so. My Grandmother always went by Nora E(thel). Chalk. Not Nora “C.” As an example in the 1910 US Federal Census, Nora C. Page is a Page…not a Chalk. Nora C. Page’s parents are Bula S. Page and William I. Page.
From what I pulled out of Ancestry.com, there are several Nora Page that were born approximate to the year 1900, which put these Nora approximate to my Grandmother Nora Ethel Chalk’s birth, 19Aug1898. Obviously, “Nora” was a very popular name in the early 1900s.

The following is just a few the “Nora Page” that was pulled out of Ancestry.com for early 1900 Texas information.

Respectfully,
Noralyn Ann Page Ripps

1910 US Federal Census
Name: Nora C Page, born Sept. 1998, Henderson Co., TX
Mother: Bula S Page
Birth: Sep 1898 - Texas
Residence: Justice Precinct 4, Henderson, Texas

William I Page (Father)
25
Bula S Page
18
Nora C Page
1

*******************************
Married 1898 to Bula
************************************************
1910 US Federal Census
Name:	Nora Page
Age in 1910:	10
Birth Year:	1900
Birthplace:	Texas
Home in 1910:	Justice Precinct 5, Cooke, Texas
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Daughter
Marital Status:	Single
Father's Name:	Tom F Page
Father's Birthplace:	Mississippi
Mother's Name:	Mollie Page
Mother's Birthplace:	Texas

1930 US Federal Census
Name:	Nora D Page
Gender:	Female
Birth Year:	abt 1902
Birthplace:	Texas
Race:	White
Home in 1930:	Dallas, Dallas, Texas
View Map

Marital Status:	Married
Relation to Head of House:	Wife
Spouse's Name:	Claude R Page
Father's Birthplace:	Georgia
Mother's Birthplace:	Kentucky
Neighbors:	View others on page

Household Members:	Name	Age
Claude R Page
32
Nora D Page
28
Claude R Page
9
Ruth E Page
6

*********************************

1900 US Federal Census,
Name:	Nora Page
Age:	1
Birth Date:	May 1899
Birthplace:	Texas
Home in 1900:	Celeste, Hunt, Texas
[Hunt]
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Daughter
Marital Status:	Single
Father's Name:	Thomas Page
Father's Birthplace:	Mississippi
Mother's Name:	Mary E Page
Mother's Birthplace:	Texas
Occupation:	View on Image

Neighbors:	View others on page

Household Members:	Name	Age
Joseph W Smith
45
Elizabeth Smith
33
Garland Smith
6
Purnery G Smith
5
Thomas Page
29
Mary E Page
25
Viola Page
5
Olive Page
3
Nora Page
1

Easy! "Walter" Frederick Page was married to Nora Ethel Chalk. In the interest of clarity, I'm hoping someone will start a seperate posting? There were two families discussed originally. Walter Frederick's parents were Walter William Page and Martha Payne. Other children born to that couple: Granville Roderick, William David, and Letha May. Martha died ca. 1904 and Walter William Page married Bessie Anita Sedberry ca. 1906. They had: Oakley Alfred, Arthur C., Robert Arnold, Carl Edward, Charles A., Harvey Wilbur, and Ethel Mae. Nora Ethel Chalk was the daughter of Robert Lewis Chalk and second wife, Sarah J. (nee: Walker) Manning. They wed 21 Jan 1897 in Bell County. He was previously married to Anne Margaret Butcher. Sarah's first husband was Robert M. Manning and that union resulted in Cordelia (nee: Manning) Gray. I've read the earlier postings several times and appreciate your efforts to maintain clarity. I'm not related!

Please discuss "differences" via this pulic format? I wasn't part of the original discussion but I see your point(s). However, your tree has many holes that can possibly be filled with public inputs. An example are the parents of Robert Lewis Chalk buried in same cemetery but missing from your tree.
