Unclaimed Baylor County Marriage Licenses

If you had family from Baylor County you may be able to claim the original marriage license of your family member. February 14, 2013, over 1,200 licenses were listed online. One week later, 90 of them have been claimed. In order to, possibly, claim a license you MUST be a relative!
A list of all 1,269 licenses is available at the following link. Licenses that have been claimed are marked as soon as possible. If you find the license of your family member listed and it has not been marked as claimed (date in far right column) send an email to the address listed on the website or call the number listed to request the original. (Or see if you qualify to claim it)
Thank you!
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txbaylor/unclaimed_baylorc...
Loretta Fry Farley
Birth: Jan. 15, 1830
Nashville
Davidson County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Aug. 7, 1921
Seymour
Baylor County
Texas, USA

daughter of Rev. Henry Fry - Mary A. Benom

James Monroe Farley married Miss Loretta Fry on 10 June 1854 at Giles County, Tennessee.

Mrs. Loretta Farley filed for her dead husband's Confederate Pension on 20 January 1915 at Young County, Texas. The pension was approved 1 March 1915. She was 76 years old on the pension and was born in Tennessee. She moved to Texas in 1892. She had been living near Olney, Texas since 1910. Her husband was drawing a pension at the time of his death. She states that he died 18 December 1914 at Jean, Texas. Evidently, she was illiterate since she signed with her mark "X" and the signature was filled in. The Young County Judge, W.P. Stinson signed his name on 20 January 1915. Witnesses were Charles N. Keen and W.F. Thompson. The Commissioner of Pensions sent a letter to Mrs. J.M. Farley of Farmer, Texas to show her application had been approved.

On 27 August 1921, Loretta Farley's daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Beaver filed an application stating that her mother was dead. On the application, J.C. Beaver states that Mrs. Loretta Farley died on 7 June 1921 at Baylor County, Texas. He states that he is the son-in-law and that she made her home with his family. The affidavit is signed by Baylor County Judge Noble Mitchell. G.H. Gray, undertaker at Seymour, signed that he prepared her body for burial. J.F. Bunkley signed that he was the attending physician and Loretta Farley died of natural causes from old age.

Masonic Cemetery, Seymour
Maintained by: Adriene Brookes
Originally Created by: Searchers of our Past
Record added: Sep 06, 2012
Find A Grave Memorial# 96620924
794 persons listed Masonic Cemetery
My great-great grandfather, Cyril Janik died May 9, 1908 in Bomarton, Baylor County. Does anyone know what funeral home was likely to have been used in that area at that time, and is that funeral home still in existence today?

I am hoping to be able to find records from the funeral home that might tell me the names of his parents or his village of origin in what is now the Czech Republic.

According to the book Over the Mountain by Martha Crabb, Mary Ann Selman married Calvin C. Scott on Sept. 12,1848 in Cherokee County, Texas. Calvin was born on May 1, 1825 in Tennessee. They moved to Hood County in 1877 and to Baylor in 1880 where Calvin died on Nov 21, 1881. They had six children: an unnamed infant, Sarah Elmira (married a Findley), Benjamin Thomas, Jefferson Greenlee, Willis Hollingsworth (died in Potter County), and Mary Artemisia Scott (married a Reeder). These names don't all match up to the ones in the obituary. There is much more about the Selman family in this book. The only other mention of Calvin C. Scott was that he was a Master Mason.

This obituary was found in the May 13, 1910 issue of the Baylor County Banner (Baylor County, Texas). Mary Ann Selman Scott was the wife of Calvin C. Scott and a descendant of Thomas Selman and Jemimah Greenlease. She was a cousin to my great-grandmother, Lodema Criswell Hairston. Lodema’s grandmother was Nancy Selman, also a descendant of Thomas Selman and Jemimah Greenlease.

Grandma Scott Dies
Sunday morning, May 8 at 4 o’clock Grandma M. A. Scott breathed her last. She had been sick for a long time with kidney trouble and for several months had been gradually growing worse. Anticipating the end, her children had all been here to visit her and all but one were present when she died. The funeral took place at the residence on Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Her pastor, Rev. O. E. Clark, conducted the services. A long procession of sorrowing relatives and friends followed the remains to the cemetery.
Grandma Scott died at the advanced age of 80 years and was the last one of nine children. She moved to Baylor County in 1879, being one of the first settlers, and lived a few years at Round Timber, after which she moved to Seymour. During her long residence here, she has won the love and esteem of all those who have known her. She had become a familiar figure in the town and her presence will be sadly missed. For sixty years Mrs. Scott has been a faithful member of the Baptist church. Her life has been an exemplary one and she could lie down in death without fear or trembling.
Deceased leaves six children: Ben Scott and Mrs. J. S. Foster of this place, J. G. Scott of Tahoka, Holly Scott of Roosevelt, Okla., Mrs. Reeder of Knox City, and Mrs. N. A. Green of Estelline. People of Seymour join those in sorrow for the death of this good woman. We have this consolation, though, that she had more than lived out her period of years and so lived that her memory will be revered.

Yes, the three women you mentioned were the daughters of Thomas Walter Shelley. William M. Shelley's father was John L. Shelley. John L.'s father was Peter M. Shelley, Sr.

Timothy Carpenter Shelley's father was Simon Peter Shelley. Simon Peter's father was Daniel Shelley. Daniel's father was Peter M. Shelley, Sr.
So it was all in the family just as you thought. There were also some related Shelley's who settled in Blanco Co., Texas.

Curiosity got the better of me! There are no male-Shelley fathers listed in Baylor County. In addition to Lillian Imogene, three other females (Dorothy Katherine Shelley, Tomme Mae Shelley, and Robbie Lois Shelley) gave birth around the same timeframe. Believe the others were daughters of Thomas Walter Shelley (14 Aug 1899 - Aug 1983)? Thomas' father was Robert Fielding Shelley (13 May 1871 - 27 May 1942). Thomas' grandfather was William M. Shelley born about 1842 in KY from John Shelley born about 1785 in NC. They relocated from the same area of KY as Timothy Carpenter Shelley. There must have been family-ties? Definite family tie-James Wilkerson Shelley-Timothy's younger brother relocated to Texas. He, James, did not follow Tim to Baylor County but remained in the Fannin-Grayson County area.

From Arch Huddleston to Timothy Shelley, huh? If you have not already, logon https://familysearch.org/ and setup a "free" account. Simon Mortin Shelley (27 Aug 1885 - 25 Sep 1976) was the only sibling that married. His wife was Lona Powell and her surname found on their son's, John Vernon Shelley (27 Aug 1913 - 25 Mar 1928), death certificate. Their daughter listed SSDI: Lillian I. Shoopman (22 Mar 1918 - 8 Dec 2001) along with her last husband, Luther James Shoopman (19 Sep 1912 - 10 Jul 1989). From our prior collaboration, use the Texas Birth Index url to find records: Imogene Shelley/Deryl Jeter, Lillian Imogene Shelley/Julian Floyd Rainwater, and Lillian Imogene Shelley/Luther James Shoopman. Schuyler's death listed as S. F. Shelley (Jan 1878 - 2 Jan 1914). Will J. Shelley (7 Jul 1888 - 27 Apr 1919) died of pneumonia. Lewis Allen Shelley (9 May 1883 - 17 Sep 1953) died in Wichita Falls. Mollie R. Shelley (2 Jun 1849 - 20 Dec 1920) died in Seymour, Baylor County. Unable to locate death certificate for Timothy Carpenter Shelley.

He is also my gggrandfather. I have his middle name as Curry--which I am thinking might be his mother's maiden name--just a guess. I've hit a total roadblock--and do not know where Calvin Curry Scott was born or where he is buried. Likewise, one of his sons, William C. Scott, died young (age 30) from a pump accident. I would like to know where he is buried as well.

Ruth Ann (Scott) Ference

Thank you for your prompt response, but I think we have somehow gotten two families confused. I am interested in William Owen Phillips' sister. She shows up on the 1910 Federal Census as "Issa Jane Phillips" with brothers Dolvester and John Hardy Phillips. She is also on Barbara's family tree as "Jane Phillips", sister of William, Dolvester and John. My grandmother is Malissa Jane Phillips who married John Reeves in Harrison County, Texas and died in Lubbock, Texas in 1979. I am trying to determine if these are one in the same person.

William Owen Phillips born 7-12-1882, died 3-10-1978...However, her married name would have to be Phillips. In your info it appears to be Odom???
GGrandma Phillips name was Margaret Jane and Odom does not appear on any of her records.
Looks like we do not have a match.:(

Just in time for the holidays! A great stocking stuffer!
If you haven’t read it yet, The Peasant Kings is a must read. It’s an historical novel depicting the lives of a German family who emigrated in the 1700's, from the village of Oberacker, Germany. These Dellinger men were the brothers Martin, Philipp, and Valentin who left in the 1740’s, and their cousin Jacob who fled in 1733.

The novel covers over 250 years of European and American history, terminating with the end of the American Revolutionary War. All historical information about places and events has been meticulously researched. Have you ever wondered about the details of how they managed to achieve such a move? Why did they want to leave their country? What was the Rhine journey like? How did they find a ship in Rotterdam? What were the conditions on the Atlantic voyage like? How did one search for and claim land in America? How did the Revolutionary War affect the lives of the settlers? The Peasant Kings will answer all those questions?

If your ancestors were German immigrants of the 1700's — no matter their surname — this book will reveal to you a real story of their struggle to come to the New World. More than just a wonderful narrative; extensive endnotes and bibliography will aid your research about your own ancestors.

To read more about The Peasant Kings, email: thepeasantking@gmail.com
After 9 months I am finally looking at emails, I am Eric Brock, Dee, David and John are my cousins and my mother is Sarah (Daugherty) Brock. My wife and I are now in Wichita Falls and are in the process of moving to a new home. I have several pictures of the Daugherty family from my mother and when we get settled (about Christmas) I will send some.

Thank you Marion, I looked at the death certificate, and notified both funeral homes in Seymour in hopes they would have a record as his body was attended to in Seymour before being taken to Dallas for burial. One funeral home replied and said their records did not go back that far, have not heard from the other one yet, also contacted the newspaper, no reply as of yet. This man has definitely kept me busy searching the past 3 or 4 years, just not much info on him out there. Thank you so much.

My Daddy had a younger brother who, per family tradition, died at the age of 3, which would have been 1920. He was born about July 1916. He was on the (Jan)1920 census in Seymour, Baylor County. His name was J.B. Montgomery. I don't know what JB is for, possibly John Bunyan, his fathers name. His mother's name was Ludie and his brother was Lewie. They lived with Ludie's sister and husband in 1920, Paul and Merphia Quillen. I'm looking for a record of his death, and hopefully, his burial location, so that I can be sure his grave has a stone. They were poor, so it is probable that it does not. I hope someone can help!

I'd search Red River and/or Lamar County. His older brother, William Green, is on SSDI: 14 Feb 1913 - 15 May 1988 with last benefits paid to an address in Paris, Lamar County. Sisters: Mattie Lee Hulse (7 Feb 1911 - 31 Dec 1974) and Allie Moore (26 Apr 1904 - 12 Feb 1968) both died in Paris and Allie was buried in Woodland Cemetery of Red River County. William Green listed as the father of four daughters in Lamar County. Perhaps one of his descendants is aware of the burial location of Allen and Amanda?
