I'm still trying to find info. about my gr. gr. grandparents, WILLIAM RANDOLPH MASON and LUCINDA WEEKS. I have been unable to find anything except for the 1860 census about them. They were mrd. at Bastrop, TX in 1857. LUCINDA was the daughter of JOSEPH WEEKS and grandaughter of DAVID F. OWEN. Where & when did they die? Where did their children go? Their daughter, GRACIE ELIZABETH, was my gr. grandmother. I would very much like to get in touch with any living relatives, there are some questions that need clearing up for my cousins and myself. Please, if anyone knows anything about this couple or their children, contact me. I'll appreciate any tips I can get. Thanks.
Marion Nichols

Nora Bell Gage was my g-gm. She was married to Thomas Knight Estes. Her parents were William Gage and Elizabeth "Bettie" Townsend. I have found the Gage line to be relatively easy to follow, although I would enjoy any anecdotal information that anyone has. But I haven't been able to find much on the Townsends. Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated.

I was on the Bastrop County site and found the Pauper Index book and my g-g-greatgrandmother Malinda Mims/Brooks and her daughter (I think is Sally) was in the book. Vol.1 they were on page 148 and Vol. 2 they are on page 17. I have emailed the lady that takes care of the Bastrop site and I haven't received an answer. I would like to know how to get copies of these pages and hopefully I will be able to find out what happened to my Malinda. I am in California and unable to go to Bastrop. Anyone have any suggestions please let me know.
Thank you
Jan

Here's some newspaper tidbits:

Since some are looking for Fowler's:
7/15/1899 Bastrop newspaper:
On Thursday Hon. and Mrs. J. P. Fowler received a telegram from their son, Attorney Maynard Fowler, at Goliad, conveying the sad intelligence of the death of their little child, aged about 10 months. The many Bastrop friends of the grief-stricken parents tender Maynard and wife deep-felt sympath in their great distress. "Suffer little children to come unto Me," sayeth the Lord.

Also:
SHOOTING ON PINEY CREEK
On Sunday a shooting occurred on Piney Creek, between Cedar and Walnut Creek, south-west of Bastrop, with the two Hemphill Brothers on one side, Charley Lee and Carl Eastland on the other. There are conflicting reports as to the origin of the shooting. It seems, from what we can gather, all four emptied their pistols. Charley Lee being the only one hit, he was shot in the leg; breaking the bone, the same shot killing his horse, which ran a few hundred yards after receiving the fatal shot and fell. Examination was waived and all parties placed under bond.
(Don't know what Hemphill Brothers this article is talking about. There are two Hemphill families in the area probably related way back as they both use the name Zeno in their lines)

He moved to Texas in 1835 and received a land grant on 3/26/40 in Bastrop County. I'm not sure if he lived there. I assume he did. His wife's name was Julia Ann Whitaker with whom he had many kids: Eliza,William, Edward, Enos, Caroline, Emily
Robert, Frank, Louis, Rosetta, Malvina. Malvina m'd Cicero Smith with whom she had 11 kids with. This is probably a long shot, but I thought I would give it a try.

Would anyone know Martha Jane (Cole) Eppler's fathers & mothers names? Anything about this family. Joseph GRAY; Sarah "Sally", b. 14 June 1863; John, b. 19 May 1866; Lorena "Lenora", b. ?? d. ?? in FL.

I believe Nancy and Mary Ann are sisters of my Great Grandfather, John Price POYTHRESS, b. 19 Sept. 1833 in Gadsden County, FL, m. Mary A. DOLAN, b. 23 Feb. 1845.
They lived their lives in Gadsden County and have many descendants in N. FL/S.

I am searching for information concerning the descendents of N(athanial)C(icero) Smith and Malvina Winans in Bastrop Co. I am particularly interested in their son Francis William (my great-grandfather). “Frank was born 3 Sep 1870 (probably Bastrop Co.) died 21 Jan 1929, in San Antonio and is buried in San Fernando Cemetery III in San Antonio with his wife “Sally”.
He married his cousin Sarah Jane “Sally” about 1890 when she was 16 years old. I am have hit a brick wall trying to pin down her heritage. There seems to be a disagreement among family members as to her maiden name; Johnson or Smith.
“Sally” was born 18 Nov 1874 (Gonzales Co.?); died 27 Nov 1971 in San Antonio. If her maiden name was Smith, could she be the daughter of N.C.’s brother Merrill that listed in the 1880 Gonzales census:
Marel A. SMITH 34
Sophrony SMITH Sister 25
George SMITH Son 7
Sally SMITH Dau W 5
William CUDE Other 22
Frank and Sally lived in Gonzales County until about 1900 when they moved to San Antonio.
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Hub

Sarah Jane Stewart 1820/21-?

Searching for information on Sarah Jane Stewart. She was the daughter of George Stewart and a McDaniel daughter of Jacob McDaniel (possibly named Jane). Sarah Jane was born ca 1820-1821 in Georgia - probably Jones County. Her mother died pre 1826 when her grandfather Jacob McDaniel gives her a slave named Charity aged 7 and a lot of land in Houston County, GA - both of which are to remain in the hands of Sarah's uncle Samuel McDaniel until she is of age or marries. In 1838 Samuel McDaniel petitions the court from Tennessee saying that George Stewart (her father) is insolvent and that Samuel has been Sarah Jane's sole support financially for everything including education. Those papers also state that the slave given to Sarah Jane is now crippled with two small children and unable to support herself. Samuel McDaniel sells land in Georgia from Hardeman County TN in February 1838. A newspaper notice that land in Georgia will be sold for the benefit of Sarah Jane Stewart a minor of TN and is signed by Samuel McDaniel, dated April or May 1838. This land is sold in June for $600.00. It also appears that Sarah Jane is living with Samuel McDaniel and family still in 1840 Hardeman Co TN census. By 1846 the Samuel McDaniel family is in Bastrop Co TX where Samuel and some of his children are killed in a cholera epidemic. Did Sarah Jane Stewart come to Bastrop Co with the rest of the family - and was she killed with other family members in the epidemic? Does anyone have a list of those killed in that 1846 epidemic? Surely she married before then, is anyone aware of a marriage record for her? Thanks, Trish Elliott-Kashima, Lawrenceburg, TN

I'm looking for information on Louis or Lewis Smith (b ~ 1802 in GA) and his wife Elizabeth Unknown (b ~ 1804 in Georgia). I've found a death certificate for a Mrs. Louis Smith who died on 24 Jul 1905 at the age of 1001 (I'mm assuming this means one-hundered and one) years, 5 months & 25 days. This would put her birth as 29 or 30 Jan 1804 depending on how one counts.

Their children include Eliza Smith, Frances Jane (Smith) Hendrix, who married Daniel Clary Hendrix, Edwin James Smith of Titus County (my line), Mary Smith, Erasmus Smith of Leon County, William Jasper Smith of Bastrop County and Rachel Missouri (Smith) Hendrix, who married George W. Hendrix.

If any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to share information.

Best Regards!
Daniel

I am looking for any information on the following family:
William Johnson b. Tennessee. Died before July 27, 1900 and is buried in Markley Cemetery, Markley, Young County, Texas. He married Laura "Minnie" Johnson ca 1890. Laura was born January 11, 1869 in Red River County, Texas and died December 29, 1895 in Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas. Their daughter, Lucy, was born July 27, 1892 in Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas. A son, Roy was b. ca 1895. Lucy and Roy are shown in the 1900 Young County, Texas Census with an uncle, Albert Johnson and a grandmother(?), Margarett Johnson. Family sources state that Roy moved to Ulysses, Grant County, Kansas and is buried there. Lucy married Anton "Tony" Fuhrmann in 1911 in Lindsay, Texas.

For any information you can provide I am grateful.

Many years ago, I found a copy of a will in my grandmother's cedar chest. It is the will of Samuel Craft dated 1857 in Bastrop County. The copy was obtained by someone in 1950. I'm very curious as to why she had this copy. So stated in the will, Samuel had a daughter named Harriet who married Campbell Taylor. I mention this name in particular because my great-grandmother was Agnes Taylor (b. 1843). She married John R. Walpole around 1865 and died in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX in 1909. I'm trying to find some connection to the Craft family and end the mystery of why my grandmother had a copy of the will. Thanks to anyone who can provide me with any information.

The other photo says Tom Woods on the back and both photos were from Bastrop, Texas.

Alice Minor Thornton Brown DOB 1882. DOD estimated during years 1921-1930.

Seeking information on Alice Brown, DOB 1882 probably in Fayette County, TX.

She lived in Bastrop County in 1900 with her stepfather and mother, age listed as 17. She may have married in Bastrop, we do not know.

She was my grandmother’s older half-sister.
Name is given on the 1920 Federal census as Alice, but my aunts insist it was not that, and in fact on the census record itself it looks like something else (although it begins with an "A" and was transcribed as Alice).

The 1920 census lists her as Alice Thornton, widowed, living in Davilla, Milam county.
Children Era, Louis, Vittoria, Charlie, and Lucy.
We do not know her husband’s first name.

We believe her last child was Charles Alfred Brown, born in Burleson County on 11/18/1921.
Again, we do not know her husband’s first name or where she was buried.

We think she died between 1921 and 1930.
In 1930 her son was listed as living with his grandmother, Hattie Johnson, on the Milam census.
The Thornton girls lived with my grandmother, Ella Minor Hughes, and her family in Milam County.

I did find an Alice Brown listed in the Burleson county probate records between 1911 and 1922, but do not know if that is the same person.

Any help would be appreciated.

Saw your old post on bastrop county queries. We had ancestors from that area from the 1830's Gray's. Oldest in our line in that area was a Daniel who came to that area in the 1830' with his family and his son/famiily-John Thomas and Joseph. They are served in the war and were given land there. If you see any connections or have additional info on the Gray's we would love to hear back from you. thanks!!!

I know that a few McGehee brothers settled the area around 1835-ish. What I really want to confirm is when their widowed mother, Elizabeth Thornton Gilmer McGehee (wife of Thomas Baytop/Bastrop McGehee), came to the Republic of Texas.

Her hubby died in AL in 1832 and she died in Bastrop in 1846 at the age of 66 and had not remarried. I was hoping to find her name on a tax record, deed, will, etc., and was wondering if anybody out there knew exactly when she came to Texas. Also, does anyone know where this McGehee clan is buried??? I live in Austin and I'm ready for a road trip.

Thank you,
Kerry Keith Wallace

Hello am looking for James Stewart family of Bastrop, TX.
His wife was Blanche Hennington who later married Manche Brice. James Stewart was born January 1876. He can be found in 1900 in Precinct 1. He cannot be found in 1910 and he is not listed in the Bastrop County, TX death records. His wife and children are there and stayed there.
How can I find out if he really did die in Bastrop but was not recorded? I have also seen the spelling Steward.
Thank-you,
Mary

Dock McDavid, d. 8 Aug 1908 (deputized by Bastrop Co constable)

I am volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 8 Aug 1908 about 5 miles outside Paige, Bastrop County, Constable J V DUNBAR deputized citizen Dock McDAVID to assist him in arresting Joe McNEIL on a charge of using abusive language. On the buggy ride back to Paige, McNEIL was seated between DUNBAR and McDAVID when McNEIL attempted to jump from the buggy, but was grabbed by McDAVID. Constable DUNBAR struggling with controlling the horses, drew his pistol and fired at McNEIL, fatally wounding McDAVID accidentally. The constable shot and killed the fleeing McNEIL. Dock McDavid was married to Mollie TAYLOR in about 1896 and had two sons - R.B. & Ollie - and two daughters - Minnie & Pearl. He is buried in the Ridgeway Cemetery in Bastrop County. I am searching for surviving family members. Also was "Dock" his real name or a nickname. I would also like the Precinct No. for Constable DUNBAR.

Searching for Great-Grandparents

I am still searching for my ancestors, especially Jessie Williams. He was married to Beckie? They had children, Mary Jane, born Bastrop County, 1857, John C., born 1866, Bastrop County, and Eliza E. born ? in Texas in 1870. Beckie died before 1880, because Jessie was listed in Uvalde County, Texas on census with John and Eliza, Mary Jane married Richard Julius Brooks in November of 1879 in Bastrop County, Texas. They lived next door to Jessie and the children and Jessie was listed a widower. I know Jessie farmed a tract of land at Smithville Lake area in approximately 1861. Eliza E. married C.J. Smith in Uvalde, Texas in 1888. Richard and Mary and John all came to Oklahoma around 1911 or so, but cant find Eliza or where Beckie died. All help appreciated
