Pioneer History of Bandera, 75 Years of Intrepid History, by J. Marvin Hunter is now available as a download free to our computers! Out of Print now.

All the old timers in Bandera were either interviewed by Hunter or submitted their stories - lots of great details. Indian fighting is mentioned constantly. The problem was so bad that the legislature passed a law absolving Bandera folks from paying certain taxes since they had to spend so much time fighting the Indians. Amazing.

Go to Google.com, click on More, then Books, then search for the title. You have choice of Reading or Downloading.

The complete book, Pioneer History of Bandera by J. Marvin Hunter, is also available on line at:

http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/TBDP/UNT/meta-pth-27720.tkl

which is part of The Portal to Texas History, hosted by the University of North Texas Libraries. They would come to visit from Rock Springs when my husband, children and I would visit my grandparents. It's great to find a connection.

Lois,

Thanks so very much. I did look at the cemetery listings for Bandera and found a Mary McDaniel, but I think she probably would have married and so have a different last name on her tombstone. I am really hoping one of the children of John S. and Joe McDaniel stayed around the Bandera area and had kids so that a surviving kinsman can help me move further back.

David McDaniel

Any info on Amos McDaniel or John S. McDaniel?

I am at a dead end trying to find earlier ancestors than my ggrandfather, John S. McDaniel, b. 1854 in Arkansas or Tennessee.

The 1900 census shows the John S. McDaniel family in Bandera, TX. Family is wife Joe; children Robert (b. 1887); Amos J. - my grandfather - (b. 1889, d. 1948); Thomas (b. 1891); and Mary L. (b. 1894). I know that John S. married Joe Stidham in Frisco, TX in 1883. He and Joe were named in a land transaction in Bandera in 1905 - the last date either shows up that I can tell.

The family of John S. McDaniel shown in the 1900 census from Bandera, TX has so many names reflected in the family of Amos K. McDaniel (living in Uvalde around 1880-1890) that it seems they must be related. Further, my father, son of Amos J., was christened David Oliver (another name repeated from family of Amos K.). The places of birth for the parents of John S. are also shown as being Arkansas.

At this time I am tempted to believe that John S. is the son of Amos K. McDaniel (There is excellent info on Amos K. and family at http://static.mcdaniel-genealogy.com/BenjaminMcDanielFamily/...)

There is a problem with this, however, because in the 1870 census that shows Amos K.'s family (in Austin), the John listed is shown as being born in 1860. Also, I have another 1870 census records that could plausibly show John S. McDaniel from Gibson Co, Tenn - it shows the household of David D. McDaniel (wife Mary, children John S. (1854), Sarah, Martha, Rachel, Livia, and an adult Mary Ethridge).

If anyone has any threads I can pull to trace back beyond John S., any knowledge of any of the children of John S. and Joe McDaniel who lived in Bandera after 1900, I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

David McDaniel
Thanks very much for your help. I have seen the draft card and report of death for Amos J. McDaniel (my grandfather). He died as an indigent at the Veterans Hospital of some contagious disease (all his belongings were burned after his death). Unfortunately, I can't determine the McDaniel line any further back than his own parents, John S. and Joe (Stidham) McDaniel. I thought it possible that the descendents of one of his brothers or sister might still live in the Bandera area and might be able to point me in the right direction to get beyond John S. McDaniel.

Sincerely, David McDaniel

Annie - this Spencer Griffin was born in Montgomery Co. KY in 1796. We aren't yet sure who his father was, but it was one of Anthony Griffin, Richard Griffin or Terry Griffin who were sons of Richard Griffin Sr who died intestate in 1824 in Montgomery Co. KY.

Richard SR's descendents created an heir's agreement on the division of his property, and it listed all 10 children as heir's. He had 5 sons and 5 daughters. The other two sons were named William and Young, and both preceeded their father in death.

Richard SR. moved his family to KY from Charlotte Co. VA ca. 1795. There is a land deed recorded in Charlotte that shows a power of attorney from Richard Griffin, of Clark Co. KY to his son Terry for transacting a land sale of Richard's property in VA.

THis is probably more information than you need right now, but I hope it is helpful.

Roy Currington

Hello!
I am related to this family on my paternal side. I descend from your grandmother's brother, George W. Lindsey. He was my great, great, great grandfather. His daughter Louisa Jane (Lindsey) Smith was my great, great grandmother and her daughter, Annie Louise (Smith) Cottrell was my great grandmother. She divorced and married to a Kirkland and is buried in Greenville TX. If you would like to exchange information on this family, I would be more than happy to.
Here's my tree on ancestry - still a work in progress!
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=5104654&pid...

Sincerely,
Jennefer (Cottrell) Bruner
tigerlilly620252@att.net
Looking for information on ggrandmother's birth. Per mother, Mary Louise Ross was born in or around Tarpley, Bandera County, Texas. Her Father's name was Taylor Ross. I believe I saw on Bandera's website that they started keeping birth records, either the year she was born or the next. Appears she was born around December 1876. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My mother was among the first guests at the new Lost valley Ranch, developed by a man named Robinson, @ 1947. Little more than a year later my parents built a home on Robindale West Rd atop the bluff that looked down on Bandera Creek and to Joleta Ranch on the other side, We lived there from late 1948 until June, 1950. Best years of my life.
Joleta used to run sheep on their acres: I pulled several out of the mud of the creek one time: the creek would dry into pools during the summer---lots of mud and concentrations of moccasins and soft-shelled turtles.
My most intimate connection to the ranch was when my goat, Janey, got lost. Mom got a call from Joleta saying there was one in the horse corral with a broken leg. Before she could hang up, I was on my way down the bluff to the rescue. I found Janey and carried her up the creek and through the underbrush and up the bluff to home. Vet set her leg and all was well.

David, never give up! Try searching the Bandera County website at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txbander/

Click on cemeteries - There are many, large and small. Be sure to follow up on all the different references within each posting. You can also contact Susan Hawkins, the site coordinator.

Also from that Bandera site you can click on home pages for surrounding counties. Many good folks have posted cemetery surveys and you may find something pertinent to your search.

Try contacting historical groups in the area. Have you searched the LDS site in Utah? You can personally examine their records at a Family History Center near you if you find a hit. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Try FindAGrave.com.

The Texas Historical Commission Atlas site allows search by county for cemeteries with addresses and maps (they take a long time to upload on my computer), the link is:
http://atlas.thc.state.tx.us/shell-county.htm

Good luck on your search.

Try contacting the Bandera County Commission, Bandera Historical Committee, or one of the Church historical groups. They should be able to recommend someone.

Addresses probably on http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txbander/

Or, try putting an ad in Bandera County Courier.

Inventory 1936 Bandera County Archives

If you use the LDS reels for Bandera archives, it might be good to review this site. Seems like the explanation of the records would make it easier to choose the correct reel, and locate the portion you are searching for without looking at all the records on the reel - the labels are confusing. Wish I had known this the last time I was at Bandera Library.

Inventory was compiled 1936 under...Research and Records Section of the Division of Professional and Service Projects of the Work Projects Administration. Chrono Index begins P. 93, subject and entry index at p. 95.

Lots of interesting info, old laws pertaining to Bandera, organization of old deed records, probate, etc., names of different Courts and jurisdiction, etc.

The Portal to Texas History http://texashistory.unt.edu for
Inventory of the county archives of Texas: Bandera County No. 10 at

http://texashistory.unt.edu/search/?q=%22Texas+Bandera+Count...

OR: use the Browse by County Map, click on Bandera.

I also see this: "Please use this URL for external references: http://texashistory.unt.edu/permalink/meta-pth-25267 "

I just sent a note telling what I was trying to locate (name & Date of Death) to the library address that I believe I found online. Actually addressed just to "Bandera Public Library, Bandera, Texas 78003" should get it delivered. The cost was very minimal and may have even been a small donation. It has been a while so I don't remember exactly. Worth a shot, though.
