Inventory 1936 Bandera County Archives

If you use the LDS reels for Bandera archives, it might be good to review this site. Seems like the explanation of the records would make it easier to choose the correct reel, and locate the portion you are searching for without looking at all the records on the reel - the labels are confusing. Wish I had known this the last time I was at Bandera Library.

Inventory was compiled 1936 under...Research and Records Section of the Division of Professional and Service Projects of the Work Projects Administration. Chrono Index begins P. 93, subject and entry index at p. 95.

Lots of interesting info, old laws pertaining to Bandera, organization of old deed records, probate, etc., names of different Courts and jurisdiction, etc.

The Portal to Texas History http://texashistory.unt.edu for
Inventory of the county archives of Texas: Bandera County No. 10 at

http://texashistory.unt.edu/search/?q=%22Texas+Bandera+Count...

OR: use the Browse by County Map, click on Bandera.

I also see this: "Please use this URL for external references: http://texashistory.unt.edu/permalink/meta-pth-25267 "

I believe I saw on Bandera's website that they started keeping birth records, either the year she was born or the next. Appears she was born around December 1876.
Any info on Amos McDaniel or John S. McDaniel?

I am at a dead end trying to find earlier ancestors than my ggrandfather, John S. McDaniel, b. 1854 in Arkansas or Tennessee.

The 1900 census shows the John S. McDaniel family in Bandera, TX. Family is wife Joe; children Robert (b. 1887); Amos J. - my grandfather - (b. 1889, d. 1948); Thomas (b. 1891); and Mary L. (b. 1894). I know that John S. married Joe Stidham in Frisco, TX in 1883. He and Joe were named in a land transaction in Bandera in 1905 - the last date either shows up that I can tell.

The family of John S. McDaniel shown in the 1900 census from Bandera, TX has so many names reflected in the family of Amos K. McDaniel (living in Uvalde around 1880-1890) that it seems they must be related. Further, my father, son of Amos J., was christened David Oliver (another name repeated from family of Amos K.). The places of birth for the parents of John S. are also shown as being Arkansas.

At this time I am tempted to believe that John S. is the son of Amos K. McDaniel (There is excellent info on Amos K. and family at http://static.mcdaniel-genealogy.com/BenjaminMcDanielFamily/...)

There is a problem with this, however, because in the 1870 census that shows Amos K.'s family (in Austin), the John listed is shown as being born in 1860. Also, I have another 1870 census records that could plausibly show John S. McDaniel from Gibson Co, Tenn - it shows the household of David D. McDaniel (wife Mary, children John S. (1854), Sarah, Martha, Rachel, Livia, and an adult Mary Ethridge).

If anyone has any threads I can pull to trace back beyond John S., any knowledge of any of the children of John S. and Joe McDaniel who lived in Bandera after 1900, I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

David McDaniel
I'm interested in locating Amasa Clark's Reminiscences of a Centenarian, to either purchase or obtain a copy. Amasa was the "First Permanent Settler" in Bandera according to J Marvin Hunter, arriving in 1852.

Amasa and my g gfather John Kindla were in-laws (Francisca Kindla (10/1832 Po) married Amasa 8/3/1855, later divorced). Amasa, John Kindla and Dr. Thompson were together on the road back from San Antonio when they were beaten and robbed in 1856 (or 1872 according to Hunter).

Any assistance in locating his recollections would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Lois

Nancy A. BEASLEY, daughter of John BEASLEY and Lucinda CRANE, was born 18 October 1835 in Tennessee. She was married in Stoddard County, MO to Francis Marion HODGES, son of James and Manirva HODGES. They lived in McCulloch County, TX during the Civil War, and were among the earliest settlers in Pipe Creek. Marion died in 1888 and Nancy in 1895, and both are buried in the Pipe Creek Cemetery. Would like to hear from their descendants. Nancy was the sister of my great grandparents, Mary (BEASLEY) HARVICK and Joseph Newton BEASLEY.

I believe that HH came from Missouri during the Civil War with Mother, Sister and others but don't know if there is a relationship there.

One when he first landed declaring citizenship to the United States, a 2nd document declaring his allegiance to the Republic of Texas when they succeeded from the Union and then the 3rd in 1865 when he declared his allegiance to the United States of America, and denounced all allegiance "particulary to the King of Prusia". I haved scanned the final document, but not the first two.

I am looking for information on the Cooley or Hand family that may have taken in a baby girl that was born May 4, 1896. She was born to Melvina Weed Reavis. She has the name Maggie Lee on Reavis family data. However, she was living with John R and Louisa A Cooley in 1910 in Bexar Co. Her name was Margaret "Maggie" Rita Hand. She is listed as John's sister in law. A brother in law Jack Hand was living with this family too. She married William Wesley Adair. William's wife Sarah was John Cooley's sister. Margaret Hand Adair told her children very little about her childhood. She was also close to a family by the name of Bonn. (She is the half sister of my dad, Oliver J. Reavis.)

Joseph Richard Fryer

I am researching Joseph "Joe" Richard Fryer (name spelling variation-Friar).
b. March 1888 Texas d. Nov. 11, 1913 Honey Creek, Bandera Co., Texas
married June 11, 1907 San Saba Co., Texas to Sarah "Sary" Elizabeth Bessent b. June 14, 1899 Texas; d. June 25, 1981 Mills Co., Texas
To my knowledge they had one child Annie Elizabeth Fryer. I do not have date of birth, etc for Annie.
She married George Claburn Fryer and I think they had 3 children. They divorced -but I do not have marriage or divorce information for them. She remarried First Name Unknown Dobson.
I have found him in the 1900 Bandera Texas census.
According to family legend:
murder of Joe Friar Nov. 11, 1913 by O.L. "Boc" Freeman.

I would love to find more information in regards to him.
I will be happy to reimburse expenses for look up of information in regards to his murder.

There is another story posted on another message board that I would also like to find more information in regards to:
Does anyone have any information of a Friar baby girl being born in 1914, She was given to someone else. I have heard she was the child of Joe Friar and Sara Elizabeth Bessent, then there was a suspicion that the baby girl belonged to a man named William Henry, who was not married and he was a half brother. There's also a mention of a George Friar who was a judge.
Please contact me at my email address:
jimair@pelicancoast.net

Any information, documentation, etc. on these families will be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance for your assistance.
Barb

Patterson or even Louise or Lucy Patterson?
WE think she may have come home to stay with 'momma" and Momma was : lucy cave dodd AUTRY and we have been unable to find an Autrey (Autry) family in the 1870 census with a wife, lucy and a step dau. Marilla or marcella or lucy?

WE have looked so long...do you hear desperation here? grin,
IF anyone has access to BANDERA records, or marriage list, or even cemetery list?
Looking for info on Leona Elizabeth Weed and Berty A Weed Byerly. They are sisters and daughters of Solomon Franklin Weed and Eda Chadich. I am also looking for their sister and my grandmother Melvina Rebecca Weed Reavis' daughter. Her name is Maggie born May 1896. She married William W. (Bill) Adair in about 1915-16 in Bandera Co. She was raised by a family in the Bandera area. Supposely she was not my grandfather's child and he would not let her live with them. My grandmother always told my dad he had another sister. I did meet her a few times in the early l950's. I do not know what name she went by growing up. However, she did claim to be a Reavis when she was grown. I cannot find her anywhere except in the 1920 census as an Adair, not even her death.

Hi, all!

I have a small weathered clipping from an unknown newspaper, which features a political cartoon, showing the main street of Bandera, and a Trojan Horse made of strange bits. Climbing out of the horse is a man with a gun, and a huge badge that reads "Law" on his chest. The caption reads: "Judge Triggo's Trojan Horse."

I believe that the Judge Triggo being satirized was my grandfather, Simon L. Triggo. But I cannot find a Triggo as judge in Bandera County. Does anybody know? Thanks.

John Kindla (Centawa, Poland 1805 – 1883 Bandera, Texas) was my grandfather, arriving with the first large group of Poles in Galveston, TX on the bark Weser Dec 3, 1854 with his first wife and four surviving children. Searching the LDS records I see an Ancestral File showing a “John Kindla” with Marriage about 1858 in Montrose, Jasper Co., MS.

The person in file is linked (in error) with persons in our family BUT my grandfather John Kindla was not in the military or ever in Montrose, MS, he never left Texas. Kindla is a rare name and all Kindlas in Texas (I believe) are related to my Grandfather, his sons/half brothers: Joseph Kindla (circa 1840 Poland married to Anastasia Korus), Atascosa Co., TX, and Ernest Felix Kindla (1862-1946)married Mary Agnes Adamietz 1869-1951) Bandera Co., TX

Can anyone provide a clue on this situation, or further information. Thanks.
Discovered another article in Family Bible giving the location of Theodore Kindla's death in 1872 by Indians as WEST VERDE CREEK which may be in Kerr County just north of Bandera line. Any info would be appreciated.

Several folks have reported seeing a marker, but not where. A local historian told us "1872 was a bad year for Apaches."

J. I think I got to it via the Bandera County GenWeb site, but in one of the site overhauls, the list vanished. Does anyone know where it went? Surely there is a cemetery committee that has a "master" list that could possibly be published online? If so, I'd be glad to help, since I have many, many family members buried there.

Thanks for any information!

The Bandera County Courier newspaper ran many articles on the Polish Pioneer families last year. All the family histories were reprinted in the PGST Summer 2005 issue of Polish Footprints (it's much easier to read than the individual newspapers). Summer 2001 and 2002 issues were devoted to Bexar County Poles. Copies are available. The website has a searchable surname database at PGST.org

Does anyone know if the song "Bandera" by Willie Nelson has lyrics? I have an instrumental version and if there's a version with lyrics I'd sure like to know where to find them. Thanks much...

Marie

P.S. I am researching my genealogy and it's mostly in Texas; Bexar Co. and Hays Co. (where my great-great-grandfather, my "brick wall", died in 1904. His name was James Sanford Travis. Is Bandera anywhere near Hays Co.?

Searching for this book to understand more about my Polish ancestors - my g gfather was a Bandera Pioneer in 1855. If anyone has a copy, or knows where I can purchase one or obtain copies, I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

Baker cites this book (pp 193 - 194) discussing the attacks by indians and the fear of attack by the early settlers in Bandera, so much so the residents considered abandoning the town. I'm interested in how the residents viewed my Polish ancestors.

If anyone has family reminiscences from early residents to share, I love to read them.

They lived in the Pipe Creek area and are buried there. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would be so grateful. Thank you very much. Vickie

Do these records exist anywhere? I am looking for a 'Lawrence Walter' born to a 'Lillie Mae' in the year 1909. I am not sure of a surname for either -- Lillie Mae married John Wesley Wade in 1911 and he adopted Lawrence, but I'm interested in finding Lawrence's biological father if possible... Lillie may have been a Cromwell or a Crow by birth. Any info greatly appreciated.

Elizabeth would be is in her mid 60's & born in VA, Isaac in his mid 30's & born in Ohio. This is consistant with my Elizabeth Thorn that married John Lewis in Jackson Co., Ohio 12/29/1831. Whose family moved to Jefferson Co., IA & enumerated there in 1850. I find no census infor for them in 1860 or 70. If anyone has a clue, please let me know.

Greetings All!

I'm looking to identify "W. R. Johnson", what is his full name, what happened to him and who were his parents?

This is what little I have so far:

1) Married Penelope Dunning, the daughter of Samuel Washington Dunning & Nancy Elizabeth Satterwhite Edwards, on October 10, 1877, in Bandera Co..

2) Penelope "Nellie" Johnson was at the home of her parents at the time of the 1880 census with 2 yr. old daughter named Mary.

3) A son, Albert S. (?) Johnson, was born in July 1880; he is found in the 1900 Travis Co Census with James and Penelope.

4) Shortly afterwards Penelope married James Polk Winters, son of John Frelan Winters - patriot of the battle of San Jacinto.

Just today I found online the marriage record for W.R. Johnson and Penelope Danning (Dunning) at the USGENWEB Bandera site. This is the first time I've seen initials of his name! If you have any leads please respond.

Sincerely,

TJ Clayton
tjcgrc@swbell.net
