Texas Confederate Home for Men

Do you know of anyone who worked in this home, which is no longer standing, or does anyone know of anyone who lived and died there and where they might be buried? My grandfather CHARLES CUMBERLAND died there Feb 28 ,1946, was at the Cook Funeral home on Colorado st. His Death cert says he was buried in Austin State Cemetery, which I cannot find either. I got in touch with the new Cook Funeral home on LaMar and they said that the home was called the Mens Confederate Home and he was buried in the State Hospital Cemetery. If anyone can give me any info I will really appreciate it. I will be in Dallas Thursday and am getting short on time to find his grave. He has no stone so the cemeteries will have to look at their list of names not the gravestones for his name.

I am trying to put together decendant tree's for Carl(Charles)Milatz family (came to Texas abt. 1872) and the F.W.Muller family that lived in Austin Co. from 1846 to today. I am still working on the correct spelling of Milatz,as I have found it spelled several different ways. Carl or Charles Milatz (born in Brandenburg March 1873/died Burleigh community of Austin Co. abt.1903) came to Texas in about 1873 according to the census. His wife's name is unknown, but his 5 children were Louise(not sure what happened to her), Johann(died in Germany), Mary Sophie, Anna, and Minna. Mary Sophie Milatz who marr. a ? Schulz, and then marr. John Henry Juergens and whose 8 children were Ferdinand and Anna Schulz and the Juergens children were Paul, Otto Henry, Emma, Pauline, Henry, and Hermann. Anna Milatz who marr. Johann G. Koehn and then marr. Stephan Gindorf and whose children were Minna, Richard C., and Anna Koehn(along with 6 Gindorf stepchildren). My great grand parents Minna Milatz marr. Gustav Muller of the Welcome community and I have most of their information. I am also searching for information to verify the location of Carl Milatz's grave in the Burleigh community. I have some of the decendant info of some of the children of Mary Sophie and Anna Milatz, but some of it is very uncertain.

We are working on a history of New Ulm Cemetery to submit to the Texas Historical Commission to apply for an historical designation. Does anyone have any information that would help with how this cemetery was first established? The earliest grave listed in the cemetery book is C. J. Schulte who died 13 December 1853. I have not been able to find this person on the 1850 census for Austin County. Does anyone recognize this name? Buried beside him or her is E. Schulte who died in 1883 and this person also eludes me on the censuses. The second oldest grave shown is one for Jan Silar who died in 1859 buried beside this person is Terezie J. Silar who died in 1885. The third oldest marked grave is one for Louis Wink who died in 1860. If you can furnish any information about the cemetery or about any of these three early families, please let me hear from you.

Joy Neely

Littleton's father was Frank Stravoski, his mother was Louisa Stahlbaum. There is a marriage license in Austin County, Texas. Who ever has this on their tree please change it. My grandfather and all of us that followed him were told that his parents were not married which put a huge stigma on him when all the time he had been lied to. His parents were indeed married. This listing was in the Remmert family tree.

Is there anyone who does actual research onsite at the Austin Co. Courthouse who would do look ups for me?

My JC and Sarah Dean Simmons lived for a short time in Austin Co during the 1871-1883.

I have them in the 1880 Census living in Wardsville which I understand was a Freed Black section of the county. JC is renting a farm and a carpenter.

Sarah is the widow of his brother Marcus. They married in Alabama 03 Oct 1867 I do not know where Marcus Simmons died, but presumably in Austin Co.

JC and Sarah married 31 Aug 1878 in Austin Co and I just sent off for their marriage license at the Courthouse.

I don't know what else to look for, but if you can help me with other documents, I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Vicki

I have just scanned in nearly 200 old photos into two online photo albums. If anyone is interested in viewing them please let me know, and I will email the online albums to you. I wish I could just post the link, but for some reason it just doesn't work like that. Some of the pictures are labeled, but many are not. I would love for people to see them b/c maybe more names/dates could be put to the photos.

Texas and Cicero was burned to death when the boiler blew up. He was probably not the only employee that was killed or injuried. I would like to get more information on this accident. Since Belleville does not have newspapers that far back, is there some local historian that has some details on this accident? Appreciate any information you can provide.

In Wallis, Austin County, Texas in 1900 Walter Pennington allegedly shot and killed J. C. Odom. In 1902 at the Bellville train station, there was a shootout and four men were killed: Walter Pennington, Milam Odom, Raymond White, a deputy sheriff of Wallis, TX and Henry Dittert who was an inocent bystander waiting for the train to take him to his home. Elihu Pennington who was Walter's father was wounded as well as several others. Elihu Pennington was charged with murder and fined $3000. In 1903 this was published: "La Grange, Tex., Oct. 3. - The habeus corpus hearing in the case of the State vs. H. M. Wooley, charged with killing Elihu Pennington at Wallis, Austin County, Sept. 11 last, was had before Judge Moore here today. Judge Moore refused defendant bail and remanded him to await the decision of the Austin County Grand Jury. Defendant gave notice of appeal."
In the office of the Austin Co. District Clerk it was found that the trial was moved to Hays County due to the strong feeings of many families and friends of those envoled and the tension was referred to as a feud. Can anyone shed any light on the cause of this feud? I have information on the Pennington family but would like to learn more about the other families involved as well as the outcome of the trial in Hays County.

Joy Neely

ZANDER

I am looking for help concerning my g-grandfather's obituary, George Zander. He immigrated to the US in 1877, date know but port is unknown. He resided and was married to Theresa Louise Thiele in Washington Co. Sometime around 1890 he moved to the Buckhorn community in Austin Co.

The obit. was in the first column of the Bellville Times and so the microfilmed version has a shadow down the left side of the column. By inference, I can figure out most of the obscured letters however this sentence has me baffled: "He was a member of ???chenhain lodge No. 237, ???H. S., whose members attended the funeral in a body." The ?'s indicate obscured letters. He was a resident of New Ulm when he died in October 1925. Has anyone ever heard of this lodge? The Times had ads for other lodges (Masons, K of C, ...) for the time period but nothing close to the one mentioned in the obit.

Any information on this or other information related to the George Zander family would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to find out more about my Stahl family. My Great-Great Grandmother was Wilhelmina (Minna) Stahl. She was born September 22, 1851 in Perleberg, Prussia. She married Louis Michaelis. Minna's parents were Franz(Frank) and Marie Stahl and they came to Texas around 1868. I know that she had two sisters named Ida and Matilda and one brother named Alvin. Were there any other siblings? Who did Ida, Matilda & Alvin marry? Also, I cannot find anything about Frank and Marie after the 1880 Austin County census. Did they die before 1900 or did they move to another county? Does anyone know where they were buried? On Minna's death certificate, it looks like Marie's maiden name was with Doehn or Drahn. There were some Drahn's in Washington County from Perleberg. Was Minna related to them? I was told that one of the sisters moved to Colorado county. Thanks for any help.

Natalie

The book The Cemeteries of Austin County, Texas lists a cemetery as the Mewis Cemetery. This cemetery is reportedly also known as the Piney Cemetery. It is located in a pasture about three miles from Bellville on FM 529. I was able to locate only one stone which is inscribed Maria Stalbaum nee Mewes 31 Aug 1858-5 Dec.1885 and Lonnie Stalbaum 4 Nov. 1881-15 Nov. 1885. Her father Fritz Mewis is also reported to be buried here as well as Fredrich Witte and his wife Anna Maria Witte. Can anyone tell me if there were others buried in this cemetery? Are has anyone seen mention of this cemetery by either name?

Joy Neely

Does anyone know of any stories of slaves owned by William Frels. My great, great grandmother (African American) could be fluent german. Story has it she was stolen as a baby and raised by a german family in Colorado County. She married as Mary Alvina Frail to a Harry Shelbourne in the late 1860's in Austin county. She was a slave in Colorado county--to whom I don't know, but with her last name, I'm guess it could have been one of the Frels brothers. My great great grandfather was also a slave in Colorado County, his take was Jack Banks but I haven't yet found who owned him... Please let me know if anyone know of any slave papers that might exist in Austin/Colorado counties. THANK YOU!

Emigrants on the Nahant and Timoleon

Looking for descendants of emigrants from Germany to Texas on the Nahant and the Timoleon. The Nahant sailed on November 25, 1845 from Antwerp and was wrecked off the coast of Torbay (Berry Head, Brixham) England on March 18, 1846 during a storm. After a stay in England, the passengers were picked up by the ship Timoleon on May 5, 1846 and finally arrived in Galveston on August 8, 1846. My family, Nicholas and Marie Plonne Treybig, and their four children were originally on the Nahant. They eventually settled in Shelby, Austin County, but we think that they made possible stops in Spring or Spring Branch in Harris County and also in Buckhorn in Austin County. They came to Texas as members of the Verein and their destination was the Fisher Miller Grant; however, they sold the property sight unseen. Would be interested in hearing from others whose families were on the Nahant and Timoleon and especially those who may have settled in any of these locations mentioned in Harris and Austin Counties. The Treybigs were from Veilsdorf, Saxe-Meiningen, Thuringia. They may have met others on either ship whom they befriended and traveled with and then settled in the same areas.

Jan

Ludwig Mewis

I am looking for information on Ludwig Mewis if anyone has info in their databases. He came into the country on 20 May 1807 from Brandenburg, Germany (Prussia). The info I have from the "Pierce County Call" is he was born 7 Oct 1812 and died 25 Nov 1909. He married a "Mary" but I do not know her maiden name. His sons Herman R., Louis, and Fred came to the US with him so I have to assume that Mary also came with him. Any leads would be deeply appreciated.

Looking for info on William Horne. Middle initial is either S or T. I found him in an 1850 census as a physician in Austin or Travis co, Texas. He was born in Alabama.

I believe I found the same person listed as a Drayman in 1860 Hill Co, Tx.

I believe he is the father of William Thornborough Horne of Hill Co, Tx. born in Missouri about 1847.

These are my maternal GGG and GG Grandfathers.

Any Help will be most apreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

You have posted this on the Austin County message board. You should post it on the Travis County message board as William Horne was in Travis County in 1850 not Austin County.

Joy Neely
