I was doing some random web searching and I came accross this posting. I don't know if this is the same John Elias Altman, but that is my grandfather's - great grandfather. I've always wanted to know more about him.

Jim Murphy was one of Sam Bass' men. Bass laided out plans to robe the bank at Round Rock and Murphy went to the Sherrif and told him. The Sheriff and his men were waiting for them. Two of his men were killed and Bass was shot but Frank Jackson got him up on his horse and got back to camp. They never has a chance to rob the Round Rock Bank.

Bass could not be moved so he told Jackson to leave. That was the end of Jackson's Robbery days. He changed his name and moved up north, North Dakota
