Downing Jones Van Cleave Morrow 1870-1890

First, I am really bad with locations in Texas. So if I'm in the wrong part of Texas with this, please forgive me.

I'm researching a family-- Jones, Downing, Van Cleave, and Morrow [two sisters, Jincy Downing and Mary Ann Downing Jones, along with their children: Jesse B Downing, Charity Van Cleave with husband Peter, Charlotte Rebecca Morrow with husband Thomas, plus other children].

In 1860, they're all together in Robertson County. But then, NONE of them can be found in 1870 (which makes me wonder if parts of that census are missing). In 1880, some of them (JB Downing, Charity Van Cleave, & families) reappear in Coryell County. The Van Cleaves seem to stay in the Gatesville area from then on (more or less), while the Downings move around. (The Morrows completely disappear, as do the Joneses except for Melissa M who married Solomon Peck, and "Dervey"/Sarah, who marries John J Stovall-- Dervey Stovall and Solomon Peck are buried at Ruth Cemetery at Fort Hood). By 1900, JB Downing and family are in Runnels County.

HOWEVER, some of the Downing kids have Bell County and Kileen listed as their birthplace on their death certificates.

Furthermore, in some of the histories of the Primative Baptist Church, they speak of "Little Flock Church" (which I'd thought was in Coryell, but the Little Flock Cemetery is listed in Bell County; I did not find any of the family there). In May 1874, a congregation met there that included "Jincy Downing" "JB Downing" (who later became an "Elder" and was apparently the leader? of the congregation?), "M A Jones" (although that is a very common name), and "John Stovall" with "M E Stovall" (I believe this was his first wife, not "Dervey/Sarah").

So I am left wondering if in the 1870 missing gap and then maybe in the 1890 missing gap IF maybe the family [particularly the Downings] were in Bell County.

If anyone can help me with this or can make suggestions of where to look or whom to write, I would really appreciate it (I am on the other side of the country, so visiting is not an option). I am in particular trying to find out what happened to Jincy Downing and Mary Ann Downing Jones. The mention of them at the Little Flock church is the last record I can find on them

Thank you for your time. I really do appreciate it!
Anna

Re: Parents of Governor James Edward Ferguson

I'm just now finding this thread so hope you still have information on James E. Ferguson. I have heard from my late mother many years ago that she was distantly related to Jim Ferguson. Never did ask questions back then so don't know from which of her parents the relation came. I'd hoped to find something like a family tree with different names and see if any came up I knew of. I have read that Ferguson was born and raised in or around Bell Co. That's the same county where my mother was born. Also noticed that your name is Henderson, my mother's maiden name. There are lots of Hendersons around Temple and Killeen. We're all descendants of Nicholas Henderson who is buried in a small cemetery that's part of Ft. Hood. I think I was told he donated the land that Central Texas College sits on. His wife's maiden name was Adams, her mother's maiden name was Brewer. On Mother's maternal side her mother was an Anderson and her mother was a Bates. Grandpa Anderson was a Civil War veteran, when he came to Texas he married Margaret Elizabeth Bates in or around Palo Pinto Co. Would appreciate any help. I'll also be looking for help one of these days trying to find out more on Grandpa Anderson. Very little info on him.

Thanks, Sharon Hale
(can I put my email address here? If not just delete it - don't know if I will find this site again. sharon.hale63@yahoo.com)

Do you have a plan? With no, verifiable, oral family history you face tremendous hurdles! The City of Tyler is in Smith County, TX. Nearby is the City of Longview in Gregg County. They are the two largest towns in that neck of the woods. In 1900 Gregg-Precinct 2-District 0033-Image 9, find the household of Henry Talor age 54 and widowed. His kids: Tom, Edward, Willie, "Savana", Emma, and Walter. That's one possibility that you can research. In the absence of records connecting your Emma to this family, DNA will surely be required.

Thanks for additional sources...question, I am having a little trouble sorting out Maggie's line. It appears that her monther was also married to a Charles Payne and that she had Payne siblings that lived in the Shannon (David C.)household in 1900 becasuse it also appears that David Shannon later married Kizzies's mother (Mariah Ellen Bowden) after he fathered Leonides with Mildred Milly Bartlett a prior wife. Now I am confused as Kizzie's daughter Maggie later marries David's son Leonides.

If you can straighten me out on this would appreciate the help.

You're welcome! Appreciate the "fast" response. I measure interest by how quickly people respond. Genealogy is a priority, to me, because tomorrow is promised to no one! I don't normally check this area preferring the County Bulletin Boards. Leslie Moore found with parents/siblings 1900 Bell-Bartlett, 1910 Bell-Holland, and 1920 Bell-Precinct 2-District 6-Image 6. See you reside in California?
Death certificates support the Shannon/Payne coupling. George Shannon Sr (14 Jan 1879 - 8 Apr 1963), Lee Shannon (27 Jan 1884 - 15 Jul 1927), James Frank Shannon Sr (30 May 1888 - 5 Dec 1956), John David Shannon (1892 - 24 May 1931), and Maggie died in Texas. Joseph Freeman Jack Shannon (15 Sep 1883 -4 Jan 1956) died in Orange, CA. He registered for WWI Draft in Dallas and named his mother, Kizzy Livingston of Beaumont, as next-of-kin. I'm not related!

Trust my explanation is not too confusing? First, you missed a wife. In sequence: Maggie Shannon (15 Jan 1908-Bell), Ethel Gage (14 Jul 1914-Williamson), Cora Bell Rolls (11 Feb 1919-Bell), and Leslie Moore (24 Nov 1928-Bell). Maggie's parents were Alonzo Shannon/Kizzy Payne per death certificate Maggie Alice Shannon Harris (5 Aug 1892 - 22 May 1967). The father identified by several given names including: Lon, Leon, Alonzo, and Leonidas. He died Leon Shannon (17 Nov 1854 - 27 Dec 1910). His father identified as David Shannon and that's the defining piece of this puzzle. David Shannon easily traced and in 1900 Williamson-Precinct 4-District 0129-Image 12, he sheltered Maggie Shannon a 12-year old granddaughter. Luckily, Maggie's enumerated twice in 1900. Find her with mom and siblings 1900 Travis-Austin Ward 1-District 0085-Image 1. Although Kizzie Shannon enumerated as widowed this was not true. Lon A. Shannon also lived 1900 Travis-Austin Ward 6-District 0092-Image 13 with "new" wife and sons. I've observed the practice of designating "widowed" when a couple may have actually been divorced, seperated, or simply abandoned. In one instance, former husband and wife were actually neighbors!(lol) Anyway, Kizzie remarried and died Kizzie Payne Livingston (25 Dec 1861 - 25 Jan 1948) in Jefferson County. There's more!

Census records show wife to be Maggie in 1910, Cora in 1920, and Leslie in 1930. Found reference to Leslie Margaret Shannon: however, headstone on joint grave shows Leslie B. Cockrum. Any suggestions?

In particular I am trying to determine Maggie's birth parents as she would be the birth mother of my father Frank James Cockrum born February 25, 1910 (as shown on his birth record, mother: Maggie Shannon).

It says Clara's Mother was Fanny. I (believe) her Mothers name was Mary Francis Vance.
Thanks, Michael Douglas Minor(son of AJ Minor Jr.)

That's necessary to access/print Texas Death Certificates. From that site's homepage, click highlighted "Death" then enter Texas in "Death Place" box. Click highlighted "Parents" then enter William C. Reinke as the father and Mary as the mother. Omit her surname to compensate for variations in spelling. Click "Search". That should return: Benjamine W. Reinke (25 May 1879 - 23 Jun 1933), Amanda Lydia Sawberger (1 May 1867 - 1 Oct 1947), Martha Emma Wismar (1 Oct 1873 - 9 Dec 1953), Clara Marie Schlegel (25 Nov 1875 - 8 May 1955), and A. W. Reinke (15 Nov 1882 - 15 Oct 1934). Findagrave memorials in Bell County for: William C. (1838-1913), Mary L. (1846-1925), and Rosa B. (1872-1893).

I definitely know it's not the son of Nathan - I did that tree until I found their William.

I also have a certified copy of their marriage record and there is nothing on there that indicates the parents of either. Luckily Cordia was much easier to research.

We've looked at all the maps and it is possible that he was born in Oklahoma - I've done that route as well. I'm just really stuck at this point. Heck.... he's even buried under WH Rodgers instead of WL Rodgers due to the transcriber whose L looks like an H. lol

Thanks for the other names - I'll work on those next weekend.
The reason I asked about the draft card is often you find siblings in same county. Now I found reported marriage of W L Rodgers and Cordie Lewallen in the pedigree records.

I'm beginning to think Willie Lee Rodgers was from northwest Texas area close to OK border and Cordie Lewellen was the one born in Bell county.

The familysearch.org website now has marriage records for OK 1891 - 1959.

Jefferson county OK was created in 1907 from a portion of Comanche Co in OK Territory and the southwestern corner of the Chickasaw Nation. Montague County TX is it's neighbor.

Pedigree Resource File
name: W. L.
What you know about Willie Lee Rodgers from his death certificate is what Cordie Lewellen told the registrar. Bell county could be wrong. Often enough information on death records is inaccurate.

You might try the familysearch.org website indicate person's born Bell county with surname of Rogers/Rodgers and it comes up with 39 death records.
FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org

I do not find the WW I draft card what other Rogers/Rodgers reported in same county ?

The 1920 census has him at age 33 born TX said father was from Alabama and mother Texas which is on the death certificate as mother's place of birth. "Cordie's" parents married in Bell County in 1881 but also not finding them there in the 1900 census.

1900 and 1910 census shows William Rogers listed in Bell county. I have eliminated one from the 1900 & 1910 census as he died in Bell Co in 1947 son of J F Rogers and Margaret Corney/Carney and they lived in Bell Co in 1880 census.

1910 Bartlett, Bell, TX
Will Rodgers age 27 born TX parents reported born TN occupation hardware store salesman living in a boarding house ran by a Mr. Thompson.

William Rogers reported born TX or AR Nov 1885 lived in Salado son of George L Rogers b. TN Dec 1840 and Elizabeth J DAVIS b. AR Sept 1852 married 04 Dec 1873 Lee Co AR first child Alice born AR abt 1874. This family still in Bell Co 1910 census.

1920 census shows Cordia D/O Rogers b. TX abt 1895 - 1900 said father born MS mother AR even this is wrong, James E Lewellen was born TN and lived in Rule, Haskell Co 1910. I suppose Cordie was the one speaking to the enumerator in 1920.

Groom's Name: James Lewallen - James E
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: S.

Seeing any information on my husbands grandfather, Willie Lee Rodgers. We know from his death certificate that he was born in Bell Co., Texas - but his parent were unknown. In regards to his year of birth, we have two different documents - his birth record shows March 26, 1883; his WWI Draft Card shows March 26, 1885.
In 1918 he was living in Jefferson, Oklahoma picking cotton. In 1920 he was living with his wife, Cordie (nee Lewellen) and three daughers in Spanish Fort, Montague, Texas. Before his death, two additional children were born.
He died Nov 18, 1925 of Typhoid fever in Crowell, Foard, Texas (he is listed in the Texas records as W H Rodgers versus W L Rodgers). Cordie is found in 1930 as a widow with 5 children with her father in Scurry, Texas.

We are seeking information on his parents or any siblings. Any and all assistance is most appreciated.

Regards,
Bobbi Rodgers
