Tennessee Death Certificates

Has anyone ordered death certificates from the website www.tndeathcertificates.com? How long did it take to receive your order? Were you satisfied with the service?

I live outside of Tennessee, so it’s $20 to order a death certificate from the TSLA. That’s way out of my budget. In the past, I have viewed the microfilm at a Family History Center, but haven’t had the time to visit lately. I am considering the above mentioned website and would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Also, is there any word on whether Ancestry will scan the Tennessee death certificates and make them available on their website in the near future? Since they have recently added the marriages and divorces, I’m curious if the deaths might be forthcoming.

Thanks!

I am looking for information about Thomas Monroe Gillespie born March 17, 1821 in either Penn or Tenn. In 1839 he married Nancy Agnes Hunter(or Agnes Nancy)in Bond, IL. I think she was born about 1820 in Tenn. Thomas Died in 1894 in Phillipsville, CA. I am trying to find the names of Thomas's or Nancy's parents and if the had any siblings. I have heard the the Gillespie family had a family meeting at the beginning of the civil war that didn't go well. Some fought with the north, some with the south (I think they went to Texas) and my part of the family came out west. Any help would be great.
Nathaniel Grace

I am researching Graces that moved from Tennessee to Missouri. My great great Grandfather was Nathaniel Grace. He was born Abt 1840 in Tennessee. I can not find anything on him. He was married to Emily Stallions (also seen as Stratton and Stallings) in Morgan County, Missouri. They were married 13 August 1868. Their children were Francis Marion, William, J.W., Isabell, Martha and Charley. Francis married Susan M. Thruston. Her death certificate shows her father being John Stallions.

I have found a website http://southerngrace.anniegms.com/nathanielgrace.htm
about a Nathaniel Grace and his family. I would love to find information that will tie my Nathaniel Grace in with them. My family has hit a major brick wall with Grandpa Nathaniel (dad says they called him Grandpa Than). He was married to a Mary Elizabeth Crenshaw 15 Jan 1860 in Benton County, Missouri. He was found living with an older brother or cousin, William (17) when he was 11 and a 12 year old Sarah (married Francis Marion Crenshaw). The family was headed by a Squire Glen Grace. This was in the 1850 District 5, Barry, Missouri census. 1870 census he is in Buffalo Township, Morgan County, Missouri with wife Emily. I have not been able to find any information on his parents. Nathaniel was not listed in 1880 Buffalo Township, Morgan County, Missouri Census with his children and wife, Emily.

Any information connected to him would be greatly appreciated!!

Victoria Grace
Would any one be able to help in regards to Nashville in the late 1860's. Was there an influx of workers due to the need for either carpenters or masons on some work project. James and Mary Turner Lynch came to Tn via New Orleans and stayed a few years. Their son Thomas was born there.
I beleive the job market brought them to Tn. They returned to either Ireland or Scotland by 1870.
Regards
Ellen

Martha Hubbard Wallace Durham death 1874

I have come across some new information regarding my 3rd great grand mother; this information has stopped me dead in my tracks, I hope someone can help me. I have started the information below with my paternal grandfather (Willie Frank). I’ve included my notes regarding William and Martha Hubbard Durham, which is where the new information comes into play (Martha Hubbard Durham). Thanks in advance. Renee

Willie Frank Wallace-4 (Richard Hullett Wallace-3, William H. Wallace-2, William Wallace-1). He was born on 29 Apr 1910 in Tennessee. He died on 26 May 1988 in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee. Burial on 28 May 1988 in Forest Hill East Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee. Married to: Zora Louise Sandy is the daughter of James Robert Sandy and Nettie Elizabeth Henshaw[31]. She was born on 16 May 1911 in Amagon, Jackson, Arkansas[32]. She died on 21 Apr 1997 in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee, United States of America[20, 31, 32]. Burial on 24 Apr 1997 in Forest Hill East Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee[31]. Two children born from this union.

Richard Hullett Wallace-3 (William H. Wallace-2, William Wallace-1)[5, 5, 5]. He was born on 06 Jan 1877 in Haywood County, Tennessee[5, 5, 6]. He died on 24 Jun 1943 in Riverside, Riverside, California[5, 11]. Burial on 26 Jun 1943 in Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside (West), California[11]. Married to: Minnie Dallas Hopper is the daughter of Richard Hopper and Frances Maxwell [5, 16]. She was born on 08 Nov 1881 in Unknown, Tennessee[12, 16, 17]. She died on 03 Feb 1935 in Riverside, Riverside, California[16, 18]. Burial on 07 Feb 1935 in Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside, California[16]. Eight children born in this union in correct order: Mary Elma, Belle, Richard Clyde, Doris, Margaret Louise, Willie, Infant (birth & death same day), and Fred.

William H. Wallace-2 (William Wallace-1)[4, 5, 6]. He was born Bet. 1836–1838 in Tennessee[7]. He died Abt. 1884 in Tennessee[8].

Notes for William H. Wallace: General Notes:

Death Certificate for Richard Hullett Wallace, shows his dad's name spelled as WILLIEM, this may be a typo on the certificate. However, the "E" key is would not have been located next to the "M" key on the typewriter, which may indicate the name is spelled correctly.

Information prior to this WIlliam Wallace is speculative, but very promising. Several Wallace researchers and volunteer's have provided the same information, which makes me believe that this is the correct family. A closer look is necessary to confirm this connection.

(All probables but worthy of further researching)

1.	I suspect that William Wallace may have married twice

I believe his first wife was S E Herbert- -likely Sarah? ELIZABETH.

The Elizabeth is definitely correct.

S E Herbert married Wm Wallace Oct 29, 1860 Haywood County TN.

According to Haywood County, Tennessee Early Marriage record, William's middle initial is "H".

1870 Haywood County District 5 Wm Wallace 34 TN Elizabeth 28 NC

Dorah 7 Robert 5 Elizabeth 2
Wm 6 months (this child does not show up on the 1860 census; he must have died during the

ten year period)

1880 district 5 Wm Wallace 42 Dora 17

Robert	15
Jessie	13
Belle 12
Richard	2

Now, debating the above!

Elizabeth Herbert had a sister Martha. Did Elizabeth die and Wm marry her sister in that 10 year period? There is certainly a large gap in the children's ages to make that a possibility. Belle 12 and then Richard 2.

This MAY be the correct Herbert family.

July 20 1860 census (Wm married Elizabeth in Oct) Wm Herbert 50 NC
Elizabeth 50 NC Elizabeth 20 NC ********
Wm 18 NC

Martha 16 NC ????????????? 2nd wife? George 14 NC

Same as Above: 1860 Tennessee, Haywood County, District 5, P.O. Woodville, Page 432B, 7/20/1860:

Wm. Herbert, 50yo, Merchant, NC Elizabeth, 50yo, NC Elizabeth, 20yo, NC
Wm., 18yo, NC Martha S., 16yo, NC Geo. H.J.?, 14yo, NC

Wm's parents (Likely) 1860 census

Wm Wallace and Jane Wallace of NC both born around 1784
Wm died before 1860 census and Jane was listed in District 4. Census taken Aug 8, 1860. If correct Wm married S E Herbert in Oct.

Jane Wallace 73 NC Jane 26 William 21 **********

Remember- -not written in stone- -just a possibility.

In 1918 your Richard Hullett Wallace was 41 (Jan 26, 1877) and wife Minnie were living in Shelby County. (Draft registration)

Possible.....

Tennessee Marriages 1851-1900: Haywood County TN Wrn*. H. Wallace m. Elizabeth Herbert 10/29/1860 *Could be handwriting misinterpretation by indexer

Martha Hubbard Durham is the daughter of William Herbert and Elizabeth Unknown-Herbert [7, 9]. She was born Abt. 1842 in North Carolina[6]. She died 1874 in Tennessee[10].

Notes for Martha Hubbard Durham: General Notes:

Richard Hullett's death record states that his mother-Elizabeth's last name was HUBBERD; however all other records indicate HERBERT. But both are possible last names.

A Sarah Elizabeth Herbert lived in Haywood county, Tenn in 1860. I did not find Wm Wallace in the same area.

According to Zora Louise Wallace, Willie Frank Wallace's grandmother was Martha Hubbard Durham; however, at this time, I do not know the significance of the surname Durham. Her death, as written by Zora was in 1874.

Birth year and place are unconfirmed. Any information regarding Martha's parents and siblings is simply speculation, at this time.

William H. Wallace and Martha Hubbard Durham. They had 1 child.

Relationship Notes:

Tennessee Marriage Records 1851-1900 show Wrn H. Wallace married S.E. Herbert; I believe this to be a misprint and/or a handwriting misinterpretation by indexer, as other sources clearly show Wm H. Wallace. Additionally, on Richard Hulletts Death reference at Ancestry.com, it shows mothers maiden name as Hubberd. Until further information is obtained, both surnames for Sara Elizabeth are possibilities
DNA Testing & Descendants of Joseph & Mary (Henby) Farmer of Randolph Co., NC

Looking for Farmer male descendants of the Joseph Farmer & Mary Henby family of early Randolph Co., NC for genetic Y-DNA testing, for the Farmer Surname Project held on the website, FamilyTreeDNA.com (FTDNA). With the DNA comparison we will be able to see if this Joseph Farmer family matches with any of the different Farmer family groups already members of the DNA project.

Joseph & Mary Farmer had sons: John, Thomas, James, William, Joseph (Jr), Solomon, and Nathan Farmer.

Son Nathan Farmer is thought to have removed to Indiana.
Son Solomon Farmer is thought to have removed to Georgia.
Son John Farmer is thought to have removed to Tennessee.
Not sure about Thomas, James, William, or Joseph Jr.

Also needed is a descendant report showing the lineage of the DNA provider to Joseph Farmer of early Randolph County.

If the cost of the test is an issue for this particular request, then help with the cost is available. The test results will be used for genetic family history "only". The test is taken from a swab inside the mouth; no blood test is necessary.

Can someone please help us locate a living male Farmer descendant from one of these family lines for the DNA testing and comparison, as well as the sharing of family history? Your help will be most appreciated.

Whether you are sure of your Farmer family ancestors, or not and would like to join the Farmer DNA Project, then we would love to have you as a member.

The URL for the Farmer DNA Project:

http://www.familtreedna.com/public/farmer

At the top of the project page you will find email links in order to contact the Group Administrator and/or Co-Administrator for more information. Please feel free to contact me also if you have further questions.

Thanks for any help you can give, TJM

Their Reward: Freedom

Can any one tell me which Jacob Mooney this was. I have numerious Mooney ties in Tennessee and Arkansas but need to place this one.

1989 FALL
BLACK ARKANSANS
PAGE 6

Jacob Mooney’s Slaves Carry on Without Him for Years
Their Reward: Freedom
WILD CAT SHOALS— Around 1811 Jacob Mooney came to Arkansas by flatboat from McMinnville, Tennessee. With him were a man named McDonald, four black slaves, and four mysterious individuals said by old timers to have been “Melungeons” — supposedly descendants of a lost tribe of Israel that had settled in America before Columbus.
Be that as it may, Mooney’s boat must have been quite large, because according to an inventory in the hand of his descendants, he brought with him: “a large brindle cow, two black and white spotted pigs, six red hens and a speckled rooster, two guineas, one runty but friendly bull, one bushel dried yeast foam, twenty kinds of seed, one hogshead black powder, ten pounds of flint, an anvil, forge, one liquor still, one hundred bolts of cloth, one gross of needles and sewing thread and one demijohn of hops.”
Mooney and company poled up the White River to Wild Cat Shoals and conducted a lively trade from their boat while they built a store and two cabins. Constructing a bellows of tanned deer hides, the slaves managed to improvise a crude smelter where they fashioned bars of lead and occasionally of silver. Ned, Mooney’s black overseer, brewed a paw-paw brandy that proved a particularly popular trade item.
By fall, McDonald and Mooney were anxious to return to Tennessee. McDonald yearned to see his wife and Mooney was eager to acquire one. They loaded up their boat with lead, silver, furs, wild honey, and paw-paw brandy. Accompanied by the Melungeons, they set off down river as the first snow began to fall, leaving the trading post in the keeping of Ned and the other slaves.
When they returned to civilization, they discovered that the country was in the midst of the War of 1812. Both McDonald and Mooney joined up with Andrew Jackson, but McDonald died a few days before the Battle of New Orleans. Mooney married shortly after his return from the fighting.
Nine years passed before he returned to Arkansas. Mooney feared the worst, but at his first stop at an inn near the mouth of the White River, he was served what was reported to be the finest French brandy. He recognized it as once as none other than Ned’s paw-paw liquor.
Later he stopped in Liberty at the home of Major Wolf, a famous trader and Indian agent, who assured him that Mooney’s slaves had all taken wives among the local Indians and had hired a man named Hightower to pretend to be their owner.
Mooney would write in his journal: “Late yesterday I came in sight of home. I could hardly believe my eyes. The store was much larger, besides I counted ten new buildings, good sized fields full of growing crops and little (black children) swarming everywhere. I landed the boat and went ashore, leaving my hands to secure it. Everything is as beautiful as we hope heaven is going to be. A comely Indian lass was tending the store. When I asked about lodging for the night, Ned’s voice called from the back room, “Is that you, Master Jake?” We fell into each other’s arms and shouted, like we had just professed religion.”
Jacob Mooney was so moved by the loyalty of his slaves he had Major Wolf draw up papers granting them their freedom. Mooney continued to commute between Arkansas and Tennessee and did not settle in Arkansas permanently until the death of his wife in 1832. By then his former slaves, now free men, had either died or migrated westward with their Indian families.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Hazel

Joseph J. Price born abt 1879

I am looking for a Joseph J. Price. He was born in Jan of 1879 in Knoxville, TN. His parents were Thomas Rees Price and Ann Maria Richards. He has one sister, Mary, who was born in 1885. Joseph was working in his father's furniture company as a bookkeeper. Next is where I need help. Most of this information is just what my father told me. Sometime after his father's death in 1906 (and after the 1910 census) Joseph left Knoxville, supposedly to "head west" as a way to escape from taking charge of the family company. He was said to have called or written a couple of times. He also might have changed his name. I am not sure if this is correct, but I would really like to find out what happened to him. I do have a picture of him on my blog (mommasfamily.blogspot.com). I would appreciate any help!

Jennie May Cowan

Looking for the family of Jennie May Cowan b. May 30, 1909. She claimed that she had been orphaned at an early age, was not sure if her surname had been changed or not, and there is the probability that she was half Native American. I am unsure of what tribe, and the Indian Census for that time period are virtually useless. I have one possible hit in US census for 1910. It has Jennie living with a Robert Cowan and Jennie Cowan in Civil Distric 1, Lincoln, TN. There are no other census with her on it, as far as I can tell. In fact there are no other records of any kind until 1928 when she married John Rollin Baker, my grandfather. It seems likely that Jennie's parents were killed after the 1910 census, as there is absolutely no record of them after this date. On her marriage certificate, a witness by the name of T J Slayton, signed on her behalf. Anyone with any information, would be welcome. Please email me at tashina_genealogy@hotmail.com Thank you.

I would like to know if there is anyone out there who has information on the Rigney's who were from the Jellico area. My great-grandmother was Marie Louise Rigney. However, I don't know if that was her given name. I think that she had also went by Ona or Onie. She was born in 1895 and died in 1957. This I know to be fact. A 1900 census leads me to believe her father's name was Hank and her mother's was Elizabeth. There was three brothers of Marie who were known as Fitchue, OC (or maybe Ose?), and Bunk (don't know his real name). If anyone knows anything about these people please let me know.

P.S. Marie Louise married Pettibone H. Mitchell from Greene County, Tennessee.

Hello All,

I am looking for any relatives of my parents, now deceased. I'm not sure when they left, but they came to Chicago, IL with my maternal grandparents, Eddie and Velma Mary Jordan (now deceased). All I know about my father's mother is that her name was Alma, and my father drove the family south to visit an aunt/grandmother Nola (Nora) every summer as siblings. Alma also lived in Chicago, IL, but I believe she too has passed. For religious reasons, I think, my father did not allow us to spend time with anyone else in the Williams family. We were close to, however, my mother's family, which included her brothers Wilbur and James Jordan (also deceased) who lived in Chicago, IL as well.

My mother married my father on April 23, 1954, and she was born in Meridian, MS in 1937 on October 23. He was born in Memphis, TN on April 20, 1937. I have eight siblings, and I believe we were all born in the south side of Chicago, IL. Siblings are: Pamela, Constance Diane, Michael, Christopher Andre, Jeffrey Scott, Velma, Felicia Fay, Daphne Eileen, and Kimberly Ann.

My maternal grandparents moved back to Meridian, MS in the early to mid-1990s, and my grandfather passed sometime after from diabetes and alzheimers. Velma Mary, my grandmother, passed in early 2000s while calling 911 during a heart attack. My mother passed in August 1998, and my father soon thereafter in 1999 from diabetes complications. My siblings are all grown and whereabouts unknown. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Kesterson family line Jessie Evelyn Kesterson and Barstow Hightowerin Anderson County Tennessee

Looking for any information on Jessie Evelyn Kesterson and Barstow William Hightower, they had a son named Lawrence Millard Hightower born 16 Nov 1900 Coal Creek, TN. I have found a marriage record of a Jessie Kesterson marr. to a B.H. or Barstel Hightower (he was a coal miner)and their June 1900 census record living in Whitley county Kentucky with Jessie b. Mar 1880 TN and Barstel Hightower b. May 1879 TN. The only Barstow Hightower I have found is a Civil War Pension. I cannot find any other records on Jessie Evelyn Kesterson and Barstow William Hightower. Does anyone know any information or have an idea of another direction to look.

I am guessing Jessie Kesterson's parents are Henry Clay Kesteron and Mary J. with children Raymond and Beatrice twins b. June 1889 bec. I have a 1910 census in Anderson county, TN of all of them living with grandson Lawrence Hightower b. 1900 but his mother and father are not living there.

Hit a dead end. Looking for Fielder

I am looking for anything on my great-great grandmother, Arena (Irena) Fielder Drew. What little info I have says that she was born in Tennessee on 11 Oct 1846. Her father's name was Nelson Fielder. Anything on him would be appreciated also. I have no name for her mother. Arena died in 1908 and is buried in Williams Cemetery, Pike County, Indiana. What little info I have found on her gives her name spelled as 'Arena,' but her gravestone reads 'Irena.'

Thank you.

Looking for a someone named Leonard Pavatte from Tennessee, either East or Middle. I have a scrapbook from my great grandfather with quite a few pictures concerning his work with the WPA during the Depression, and in attempting to restore the much-abused thing, came across a photo of a group of boys from that time, apparently a baseball team (unofficial). On the back is written Leonard Pavatte. That's it. I'm not sure if that's one of the boys, or the person who took the photo. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I did find a Leonard Pavatte on the Social Security Death Index being born in 1909 in TN and dying in 1982 in TX. If that is him, then it's the person who took the picture. If anyone wants to see the picture to see if they recognize anyone, please let me know, and I'll scan it in and e-mail it to you. Thanks,

Brandi Hargrove

She was born 4 Oct 1807 in Tennessee and married Greenberry Allen born 1799 in South Carolina. They probably were married in Tennessee and lived there long enough for five of their eleven children to be born there, these being: Houston, James, Mary, Adaline, and Priscilla. After this they moved to Illinois, first Jefferson County and then Clinton County, which is where both he and Cordelia died and are buried. If anyone has information regarding either of these people I would very greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

Barzilla/Barsilla S. DOBBS died in Fayette County, AL in 1864. He was killed by bushwackers because of mistaken identity. He left a wife and nine children. On the 1850 census of Fayette Co, AL he gave his birthplace as Tennessee and his gravestone gives a birthdate of 1811. Those nine children left a lot of descendents who would like to know who his parents were.

Hilton, Jacobs, Kirkland Families in Nashville Tennessee

I don't have a lot to go on but I'm giving the information I have. This is from my mother's adoption papers. Lola Patricia Hilton has lived in Nashville Tennessee her entire lifetime. When she was a very small child, her mother died (unknown name) and her father, Henry Hilton, remarried. There was considerable conflict between daughter and step-mother. During World War II, Lola married James L. Kirkland, a serviceman, but lived with him only briefly. One child was born to this marriage, who was placed , at birth with Tennessee Children's Home Society for Adoption. In 1945 or 1946 Lola Patricia Hilton Kirkland married Aubrey Eugene Jacobs. He was born in Cedar Hill Tennessee but moved to Nashville Tennessee when he was 13 or 14 years of age. He worked at Pickford Installation Company as a floor-layer. There were 5 or 6 children born to this marriage. All except 1 was put up for adoption. This marriage ended in 1952.

My mother is one of the children that was put up for adoption. I have found two brothers and one sister. One of the brothers was in Vietnam and died. I am still looking for the others. They were all born in Nashville Tennessee. between the years of 1945-1952 give or take a few years. I can't seem to find anything about Lola's family. I have found out a few things about the Jacobs side of the family but they are not talking. We would just like to find the other siblings. We know that Aubrey E. Jacobs Sr. passed away in 1985. Please e-mail me with any information you may have about the Hilton, Jacobs, Kirkland family. sassymomma1025@yahoo.com Thank you.
