Could you please look for marriage of Martin Paul Fisher to someone (possibly named Rachel) married before 1815. They are shown in Perry Co., TN census in 1820, before then he was in Mecklenburg, NC. They stayed in Perry Co. until their deaths in 1848. We know they had children named Wm.P, Mary A., Lucretia, Martha Ann, Martin J.L., John Adam Clark, Rachel P., Elizabeth, and Damaris. Wm P. Fisher is my gggrandfather, & I would really like to know who my ggggrandmother was. Thank you. Any info you can find about her or her name would be appreciated!

my name is Brad Kyte Hynde, my Grandfather was William Henry Hamilton Kyte 1875-1946 Carter County Tenn. He was married to Mary Magdalene Treadway in Carter county her records indicate 1887-1952.
I have been told that WHH Kyte was originally WHH Kite there is a break in the family tree because of my grandfather and his brother Frank "Franklin Kyte, Kite changing the spelling of the last name.
I believe we are looking for the same family as Carter County Tenn would have only been about 300 people in population then. Father Samual W. Kite about 1846 Father Anderson Kite about 1807 father Issac Kite 1780 Cant find anything prior to Issac.

Tennessee Pre-Statehood Info.

Tennesse became the 16th State on June 1, 1796. Prior to its Statehood and admission to the Union, the area was known as the "Southwest Territory."

Tennessee now consists of 42,169 square miles and is generally divided into three sections: Eastern Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and Western Tennessee.

Early History:
The area now known as Tennessee was first inhabited by Paleo-Indians nearly 12,000 years ago. The names of the cultural groups that inhabited the area between first settlement and the time of European contact are unknown, but several distinct cultural phases have been named by archaeologists, including Archaic (8000-1000 B.C.), Woodland (1000 B.C. - 1000 A.D.), and Mississippian (1000-1600 A.D.), whose chiefdoms were the cultural predecessors of the Muscogee people who inhabited the Tennessee River Valley prior to Cherokee migration into the river's headwaters.

The first recorded European excursions into what is now called Tennessee were three expeditions led by Spanish explorers, namely Hernando de Soto in 1540, Tristan de Luna in 1559, and Juan Pardo in 1567. At that time, Tennessee was inhabited by tribes of Muscogee and Yuchi people. Possibly because of European diseases devastating the Native tribes, which would have left a population vacuum, and also from expanding European settlement in the north, the Cherokee moved south from the area now called Virginia. As European colonists spread into the area, the native populations were forcibly displaced to the south and west, including all Muscogee and Yuchi peoples, the Chickasaw, and Choctaw.

The first British settlement in what is now Tennessee was Fort Loudoun, near present-day Vonore. Fort Loudoun became the westernmost British outpost to that date. The fort was designed by John William Gerard de Brahm and constructed by forces under British Captain Raymond Demeré. After its completion, Captain Raymond Demeré relinquished command on 14 August 1757 to his brother, Captain Paul Demeré. Hostilities erupted between the British and the neighboring Overhill Cherokees, and a siege of Fort Loudoun ended with its surrender on 7 August 1760. The following morning, Captain Paul Demeré and most of his men were killed in an ambush nearby.

In the 1760s, long hunters from Virginia explored much of East and Middle Tennessee, and the first permanent European settlers began arriving late in the decade. During the American Revolutionary War, Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals (in present day Elizabethton) was attacked in 1776 by Dragging Canoe and his warring faction of Cherokee (also referred to by settlers as the Chickamauga) opposed to the Transylvania Purchase and aligned with the British Loyalists. The lives of many settlers were spared through the warnings of Dragging Canoe's cousin Nancy Ward. The frontier fort on the banks of the Watauga River later served as a 1780 staging area for the Overmountain Men in preparation to trek over the Appalachian Mountains, to engage, and to later defeat the British Army at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina.

Eight counties of western North Carolina (and now part of Tennessee) broke off from that state in the late 1780s and formed the abortive State of Franklin. Efforts to obtain admission to the Union failed, and the counties had re-joined North Carolina by 1790. North Carolina ceded the area to the federal government in 1790, after which it was organized into the Southwest Territory. In an effort to encourage settlers to move west into the new territory of Tennessee, in 1787 the mother state of North Carolina ordered a road to be cut to take settlers into the Cumberland Settlements—from the south end of Clinch Mountain (in East Tennessee) to French Lick (Nashville). The Trace was called the “North Carolina Road” or “Avery’s Trace,” and sometimes “The Wilderness Road (although it should not be confused with Daniel Boone's "Wilderness Road" through Cumberland Gap.

I am VERY interested in this as well. Also, who were Nancy Ann Henderson's parents?

Jacob Brown's oldest son, Jacob, is documented as having served in Revolution with his father and his cousin Gabriel, so the family was not totally estranged...

1) An interesting read on this topic with cited source by Phil Norfleet: http://sc_tories.tripod.com/jacob_brown.htm

2) from researcher John Nash:
James Henderson died in 1793 and left a wil favoring John A Brown, son of Jacob Brown and Nancy Henderson. Nancy was indentured to Jacob 9 Oct 1781 when Jacob was living separate from his wife. It seems that John A Brown was their child. Jacob left his son some property, to be received only when Nancy died, but Ruth Gordon Brown took it to court and got the property by right of dowry.
I am attempting to clarify this whole thing, cause it looks like my James was Nancy's father. James will referred to the boy as "my beloved son John A Brown".

That is all I have found...

Crystal

He lived with Anne/Nancy HENDERSON in east TN. According to Jacobs will he wanted to leave property to their son John after Anne/Nancy died. After Jacob was murdered in 1785 his wife Ruth found out about the will and traveled to TN with her 4 sons to contest his will and won.
Thank you so much for the reply. I'm sorry it took me until now to respond--I had some issues with my email a couple of years ago and didn't realize you had responded. So many of my families trace back to TN so this is very helpful. I didn't realize that about it being the state of Franklin. My dad tried to explain it to me once as maybe being a reason why Franklin was such a common name back then for his southern ancestors.
Interesting stuff and likely where I need to be before going any further with my history.

I found this reference to Peter Huffman in the Chancery Court of Records of Bedford County, TN, page 434 filed 29 Nov 1854. Elizabeth Huffman vs John Huffman et al. It states:

"Elizabeth Huffman of Bedford Co. states that she is the widow of Peter Huffman who departed this life intestate in Bedford Co. in 1821. She has never been endowed of his real estate of which he died seized and possessed, all of which lay in Bedford Co and consisting of about 475 acres, lying on the south side of Barren Fork and Duck River. Bounded by Hugh Davidson, River and John Drake. Peter Huffman left the following children; John Huffman; George Huffman; Alfred S. Huffman; Mary (wife of Thomas Cribbs) and Sarah (wife of James B. Dalby) the last of whom now resides in Texas. Part of Peter Huffman’s land was in Bedford Co and part in Coffee, Tennessee. Widow lived for many years with her son, John, who finally bought all the interest in the dower land."

Yes, I am willing to share. Dates are uncertain. The following is my line: 1. Peter Huffman Sr. (~1749 to 1813), 2. Benjamin Huffman (~1781 to 1860), 3. Peter Huffman Jr. (~1807 to 1873), 4. Sarah Ann Huffman Hadley (~1831 to 1912), 5. Nancy (Dora) Hadley Marsh (~1870 to 1892).

Yes, my Peter Huffman Jr. was the boy kidnapped by Indians in 1813. He was returned to his father circa 1823. Circa 1830, Peter married Patsy Carr in Morgan County Indiana. Peter and his family can be found in various Iowa census records beginning in 1840 through 1870. Mostly likely, Peter was buried near his farm, located between Leon and Garden Grove, Decatur County, Iowa.

A technical question: How does one record dates from before and around the time that Great Britain finally adopted the Julian calendar? Looking at secondary or tertiary sources for information about an American pre-Revolutionary ancestor, I usually don't know if I'm looking at a Georgian date, or an adjusted/corrected date. Is there a "rule" for geneaology?

Thanks
Janelle

I have lincoln Co Ky Reynolds in my family - not much assistance to you, But have you read the very interesting book, "The Golden Leaf" about the Renolds tobacco heritage, touches on the Reynolds aluminum business and tells the history of their NC Family home, "Renolda"? I, subsequent to reading it, did visit "Reynolda", which has been pictued & written about in lovely magazines - very interesting and memorable!
Supposedly our Doolin-Reynolds ancestry is connected to this group, but I have never found connection.
PS: This should be in Sumner Co., TN. I was under the impression it was issued in KY (south of Walker's Line) but it may have been issued in NC.

How to find war bounty land grant info?

One of my ancestors was William Bigham (1756-1842), who moved from N.C. to Tennessee in 1800 or so. I've read a few online accounts that he and his brother Andrew both received Revolutionary War bounty land grants in Tennessee. Although I have been able to locate his lengthy Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, I cannot seem to find any evidence that he received a land grant (although he did get a whopping $63.33 a year pension!). Am I looking in the wrong place? I've searched the ancestry.com files and I came up empty. Any suggestions?

Barbara

Dear John,

We have some common ancestors and I hope you don’t mind me emailing you!

My name is Emily Andros and I’m a member of the Towne family (Emma May Towne).

I have a relative (and I think you do too) named “Joanna Blessing” b 1595 and she is listed twice in my family tree. The first time she is listed correctly as the wife of William Towne (William is the son of John Towne and Elizabeth Clarke). And I believe that’s correct.

The second time she’s listed as the SON (yes son) of JOHN TOWNE and Elizabeth Clark (actually those were her in-laws). And she's also showing up as the spouse of herself (in her listing the name "Joanna Blessing" is showing up as HER SPOUSE). So obviously something is messed up. In the AREA where she is listed as the son (or male offspring ) of John Towne & Elizabeth Clark, your family tree (and some other ones) are connected up to her.

Do you have any idea what the story is with that? I would just remove that listing, but I want to make sure that I’m not removing a REAL SON that should be listed there (I was thinking if there was another son of John Town & Elizabeth Clarke) that maybe I could just change the name of Joanna Blessings and the dob and other info, to just “correct it” instead of just yanking the listing out of there. (they did have a son named William, my relative and then a daughter named Agnes, I believe)

Do you have any advice?

Thank you and have a nice Labor Day…

Emily
