Salers/Sailors/Saylers in White Co., TN

Looking for information on the following Michael Salers/Sailors:

There is a Michael Salers/Sailors on the White co., TN tax list for the years 1813/1817/1818. Before this he lived in Blount co., TN, and was living in Jackson co. TN on the 1820 census, age 45+ (b. 1750's in PA). He lived to be at least 100, as he is listed on the 1850 census there and noted as a Rev. war pensioner, age 100.

I think I've correctly identified his pension application (Sailers) which confirms this information, but it is very difficult to read. It says he was born in PA in 1758, enlisted from Burke Co., NC, then moved to GA after the war, then in TN as before stated (also in Missouri, but details are illegible).

I wonder if he was from Wilkes co., GA, as that is where my Phillips family lived. I'm trying to determine if he had a daughter named Elizabeth, b. bet. 1790-1797 in GA, who would have married into my Phillips family.

A Jackson co., TN book says he had a dtr. named Rachel, and his wife was named Louanna Mason. Possible sons living in White co., TN were Frederick & Leonard.

Can anyone tell me anything about this Michael or any of the other Sailer names listed?

Thank you!
Amy.

I believe the mother, Samantha, may have died between 1880-1885. Anyone have any info regarding this family?

Jane Frasier married Carroll Tucker in White County August 26, 1846.

I believe that Jane is the daughter of Thomas Frasier and Mary Wilson.

When the Dawes Commission was formed in Oklahoma, all of the then-living children of Jane Frasier Tucker Sledge including the children of her second marriage applied for the rolls. At least one of them pursued it all the way through and was accepted to the Final Rolls.

Can anyone tell me anything about Choctaw lines in White County?

1850 Census White Co. - question

If anyone has studied the 1850 White Co. census and knows something about the families living there at the time, maybe you could help me with the following family:

Page 67B
White Co., TN - Dist 8 - Sept 1850
household 893-895
GALLAHAN, Jemima 50 b. TN
GALLAHAN, John C. 21 b. TN
GALLAHAN, William 13 b. TN

Page 70
White Co., TN - Dist 8 - Sept 1850
household 929-929
TEPSTER/TIPTON?, Calvin 23 b. TN
GALLAHAN, Jemimah/Jeremiah 50 b. TN
GALLAHAN, William 14 b. TN

It looks to me this is the same family group that was recorded twice when the census taker realized he wrote them wrong the first time. However he couldn't get Jemimah's name right and scratched over the m/f so that's no help. Also, the name Tipton looks like it is written like Lisster actually to me as the double "ss" thats written "ps" or "fs" sometimes seen in old handwriting. Ancestry indexed it as Tipton.

My reason for looking at this family is on the 1860 Census of Carroll Co., Arkansas is this family:
1860 Census - Carroll Co., AR - Carrollton Township - P.O. Carrollton - 7 July 1850 - household 398-390-
TIPTON, Calvin 25 b. TN Farmer (1835)
TIPTON, Milly 26 b. TN (1834)
TIPTON, Thomas C. 3 b. TN
TIPTON, William A. 5/12 b.AR
TIPTON, Jemima 60 wid. b. TN

Calvin Tipton's age varies on later census. He had several wives and many children but no clue as to parents.

If anyone knows the Gallahan family and can tell me who Jemima's husband was, it might help. Thank you,
Pam Smith

QUIERIE
Seeking info on John Dennis and his wife, Jane Whiteaker.
John Dennis was born 4 May 1829. I assume in TN. Jane was born May 1854 in TN.
John and Jane were married May 1876 in Jackson Co. TN.
John and Jane’s children were: All born Jackson Co. TN
Robert b 1884
Radford 1886
Henry 1888
Andrew 1889 (my grand-dad)
Jordan 1893
Henderron Adela 1879 female
Willie 1889
John & Jane (Whiteaker) Dennis with children moved to White Co. TN around 1890 +/_.
This was about time White Co. was formed. Part of the County was taken from Smith and Jackson Co. I believe some of John and Jane’s children were in Putnam Co. TN during this period.
Later on Putnam Co. was formed and part of that Co. was taken from Jackson and White Co. Part of the area that was named Buffalo Valley. A part of the Indian Territory.
Braxton Dennis “E” architect_90745@yahoo.com

Well, last I knew he did reside back in Sparta. Along with my aunt Sherry. Anyway, I am trying to track our history. I think we are believed to be the ancestors of Garfield Bumbalough, a Cherokee. Please help me if you know anything.

Everyone should be aware the White County TN is light years ahead in it's cemetery listings. There is the existing White Book (found on line via the TN GenForum and in the county library) which is 98% accurate / complete.

I can tell you from first-hand experience, that ANY family is scattered over a few different cemeteries. Do not limit your search to any one cemetery that your family may have mentioned.

And then there is the almost complete major redo by the White County Historical Society - third floor of the Court House. Please contact Geraldine Pollard at:

gpollard@blomand.net

I am researching my ancestor, Aaron Cantrell, who moved to White County about 1811 and died there in 1834. He was a Revolutionary War soldier who scouted for Francis Marion in South Carolina. His wife's name was Betsey and they had 7 children-Smith, William, John, James, Moses, Ephriam, Polly, and Janey.
I have tried to find a record of Aaron's death and/or cemetery where he might be buried. Possibly Sparta or McMinnville?
Can You help?! If I can find out more, I will try to visit the site when I come to Tenn. in Oct. THANKS!
Zebedee or Burrell Seals

Am looking for any and all information on a Zebedee and Burrell Seals - I believe Burrell is the son of Zebedee but am not sure. Zebedee was in White County beginning around 1826 (he shows on tax records from that time period). He died in 1839. A will was filed upon his death.

I have been unable to find any confirmation that Burrell is his son but this possibility makes the most sense based on a process of elimination. I would like to confirm this or to determine who his parents were for certain. Burrell was born around 1823 and later married Elizabeth b. 1817. They had two daughters, Mahelen and Sarah, born in Tennessee. Then relocated to Arkansas where they had 5 additional daughters.

I have reason to believe they were related to a Mahala Seals who later married a man named Snow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In the 1880 White County TN census, a John Lee, Bartholet Lee, and Julia Ida Lee were listed as children of Elizabeth Halterman Lee, widow(?) of Marion Lee, originally from Fentress County TN.

Does anyone have any information on this Bartholet Lee, or Julia Ida Lee? I have not found them and feel Bartholet may have moved to a different county, but have not been able to determine if Julia Ida married, and remained in White County.

I think Marion died shortly before 1880, Elizabeth remarried (1889, Lum Pirtle), however I’ve found no information of when, or how, Marion died, or where he is buried.

Any help or comment will be appreciated.
After her death my Grandfather Berry married her sister Birdie (Rose) Rogers, whom is buried in Pike County, Ky along beside my Grandfather Berry. They are directly buried above my Mother Lucille (Childers) Rogers and my Father Dewey Lee Rogers Sr. at the Mountain View Memory Gardens near Belfry, Kentucky. I would appreciate any help from someone who may be kin to or know of this family in White County. Places I have found listed with my family thus far is Bon Air. Tn. and Sparta, Tn.

Thanks,
Sandra

I am a decendent of William Hawes Quarles' son James Tompkins Quarles. I have wondered for a long time about William Pennington Quarles' death. I know that the historical markers in Algood, TN mention he was shot and killed on a road. I am actually going there soon to take pictures of the monument. Does anyone know the details and if the killer was caught and convicted? I have a lot of historical information about the Quarles, but none on this matter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We may be the leading Kittrell resource out there and we are free to descendants and spouses and helpful to everybody else.

We have a family tree of nearly 35000 (35K) Kittrell descendants and spouses that is totally private and a MyFamily site that is private and free and available to all Kittrell descendants and spouses.

Just post or e-mail if you fit the bill and want to see thousands of bits of Kittrell info.

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

After that period of homesteading in various counties, many in some branches moved to other states including many times over Tennessee, with Sumner appearing to be one of the first stops and many times over Maury County and other coumties including listed alphabetically Anderson, Cannon, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Hamilton, Henry Hickman, Jackson, Knox, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Meigs, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Rutherford, Shelby, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, White, Williamson, Wilson and Weakley Counties, among many other, later became the home of many Kittrells of one line or another or multiple lines.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

And we will be most pleased to find more missing links broken from our tree due to distance and change of generations to those who barely know a whit of their Kittrell kin.

Two of the daughter from his 2nd marriage are known--Sarah (married John R. Madewell) and Ruhama (married James Warren). This family can be found in the 1840 census of White County. I cannot find Levi or his wife in the 1850 census. Sarah and her family are also missing. John R. Madewell appears in Warren County in 1860. James Warren is in Overton County in 1850 and in Putnam County in 1860. Levi's eldest son William Phillips (through Levi's first marriage) also moved to White County. Does anyone know anything about this family?

In researching my John Dunn, b. 1780-1785 VA, I have found where they lived for about 10-15yrs in White Co.Tenn. On the Tax Records for this period,1832-1836, everywhere my John Dunn is listed, there is another man, JOSEE C. DUNN, a listed next to him. I am trying to determine just who this Josee is (I've been told that "Josee" is a nickname for "Joseph" or "Josiah". Is there anybody out there with any idea who he could be?

WELCH, Daisy Mae (Newton, White Co, TN)?

Daisy Mae Welch was born Sep 19, 1903 in Newton, White Co, Tennessee; married to William B. "Bill" Smith. She died January 2, 1927. She is listed as the daughter of Henry Martin Welch and Martha Jane Hale according to the census of Cumberland County, TN in 1910.

I am looking for relations or researchers of the Tennessee Welch family that includes Daisy Mae Welch. An Ancestry World Tree submitter contributed 2 WELCH family trees but there doesn't seem to be a contact for them.

I'b be very interested in talking to the compiler of those trees, and/or any other connections to Tennessee Welches. My Grandmother's Father was William B. Smith, who married Daisy Mae Welch around 1920 in TN. They had at least two children: Sylvester Smith and Grace Smith, just before they moved to the Barberton, Ohio area.

I'd like to know more about my Grandmother's parents side of the family.

Sincerely,
Richard

POW/MIA Korean War, DAVIS, IRWIN, LAMBERT, White Co.

I am searching for the family of yhree soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave White County,TN as their home of record.

Soldier: JOSEPH LERE DAVIS
Born: 1929 ?, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 31, 1950, Missing in Action. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: GERALD IRWIN
Born: Cctober 24, 1933, Black
Date of loss: November 5, 1951, Missing in ACtion in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: RUDOLPH JACKSON LAMBERTH
Born: September 27, 1931, Caucasian
Date of loss: Feb. 13, 1951, Captured (POW). His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 35 families in TN that have not been located. There are three famlies from White County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
My grandmother was Rebecca Tayes who married Wint Johnson in 1904. She was born in 1886 and was daughter of Sam Tayes (or Tays/Tayse/etc) and MIranda Neely (have seen spelling on this as MARanda Nealy and MORanda Neely as well - may/ may not be same person)

Her father and mother may have moved into Overton county -- could not find an entry in the 1880 census -- but we believe my grandmother was born in the Clay/Overton county area (Hilham/Celina)

As a little girl, she did not go to school - she had a tutor as a teacher (well-to-do family ???) She usually went by the name of Beckey.

Beckey and Wint had a farm (~100+ acres) that State of TN took away and flooded as part of the TVA Dale Hollow Dam project. Both my mother and grandmother had very clear Native American features. My grandmother died in 1960 in Sparta.

Beckey Johnson's daughter was my mother (Bonnie Evelyn Johnson) who married Leo ("Chig") Fred Smith in 1944.

I am having an awful time trying to trace the Johnson / Tayes side of my family given the many ways that Tayes might have been spelled! Please, any help that I can get is much appreciated!!

Thank you
Jerry Smith

Isaac C GLENN, b. 1829/1831 TN, White Co perhaps

Hoping to connect with anyone that might help me establish whether my ancestor Isaac C. GLENN has any connection to the Alexander & Rebecca GLENN family that migrated to Tulare Co, CA (1852 CA census) by way of Missouri (1840 census) and Texas (1850 census), or perhaps to one of Alexander's siblings, John, William, Joseph or Isaac.

Per 1860 census, Isaac C. GLENN was born abt. 1831 in TN. Per his gravemarker, date of birth appears to be abt. 1829. He was buried in Visalia CA in 1862 when the only other GLENN family in that vicinity was the aformentioned Alexander & Rebecca, thus my hypothesis for some type of connection.

Further details about Isaac may be found here:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

Thanks, Matt

req lookup in "Oldest Marriage Book, 1809-1859"

I've found a listing in the FHL online catalog for a book entitled "White County, Tennessee, oldest marriage book, 1809-1859" with authors listed as Mary Fancher Mitchell and Sharon Johnson Doliante. Unfortunately the book does not seem to be available on microfilm, and I am rather a long distance from Salt Lake City. If someone reading this message board has access to the book and would be able to do a lookup I would really appreciate it.

I'm trying to verify information from a family history book stating that Isaac Bennett was married to Mary Duncan on March 6, 1834, in White County, Tennessee.

Thanks!

Chuck Bennett
