Hello anyone out there that might be family. I have been looking to get in touch with my family whom has fallen astray for so many years now. My grandma, Gayle C White grew up in the south with 10 brothers and sisters, she was the youngest, being the 11th child. I am longing to find my family and descendents of this lost family. Gayle and her 2 daughters migrated to Portland Oregon approximately in the 1950's. Gayle's married name when she married my grandpa was: Gayle C. Adkins, Samuel Adkins was my grandpa, lived in El Paso Texas. Thank you

Cosby Bowman born 1782 probably in Goochland County in vicinity of Manakin town, near Richmond, Virginia, was second child and first son of William Bowman (1755-1808) and Mary Cosby (1761-1853). About 1795 the family relocated to Mountain Creek community north of Rutherfordton, N.C. near Rev. War. Col. Andrew Hampton, one of the patriot captains at Kings Mountain. About 1810 Cosby was one of a large number of Rutherford County residents who migrated westward to White County. Either on that trip or shortly before or after Cosby married Elizabeth Price. She died early, leaving 4 young children. His second marriage ended in divorce or annulment when the new wife couldnt abide by Cosby allowing the youngest child from his first marriage to come sleep in the bed with him and the new wife.

I am a gg grandson of Cosby's brother Eli.

James L.
Looking for ANY information on Elizabeth Wilson (married name) who had a son named G. H. and a daughter named Nancy. Elizabeth was born in NC in 1785 and lived in White County, TN from at least 1820 until she died around 1870. In 1820 census, she appears as head of household, believed to be widowed by then.

Need to know her maiden name and would love to find her husband's information. All I know about her husband was that he was a Wilson from NC, but don't know when or where he died. Believe he died before 1820.

Hello, I was searching the message boards and your message caught my eye right away. I saw the name 'Elrod' and that caught my attention because that was my greatgrandmother's maiden name before she married into the Whiteaker family. It is true that our ancestors were also Cherokee and one is believed to be full blooded. My family comes from the White County, Tennessee area (Sparta). I don't know if this will lead to anything but I would love to continue communicating and maybe we can help each other out.

The Elijah Roach Family/A Correction to 1850 Census

Posting here in the hopes of saving others the confusion this missing Elijah has caused for many years. Elijah was incorrectly recorded with the surname Norris in the 1850 White County census. His daughter, Martha Ann, was the wife of Lorenzo Dow McCormick, son of George McCormick of White and Putnam Counties.

Elijah Roach Family

Elijah was born abt 1812 in Virginia. He is suspected a son of James Roach and Mary Barrett/Barrot per Rose Young (Roach Genforum). I believe this James was of the line from John Roach that also produced the famous Parson Roach of the Pittsylvania and surrounding area of Virginia. John Roach did leave a will listing his sons.

Elijah was a farmer and blacksmith. In 1850 he is listed as a blacksmith, in 1860 as a farmer, and in 1870 a farmer & blacksmith on census.

He married Willette/Wilmoth Ann Owen on August 31, 1830 (North Carolina Marriages and Bonds) in Pittsylvania, VA. Willette is reported as the daughter of Pleasant Berry Owen and Sarah Jolley who had three children:
1. Epaphroditis married Ludy Irby on May 20, 1825
2. William B. married Roena Terry on Dec 31, 1831
3. Willete/Wilmoth married Elijah Roach as stated

Pleasant Owen married Elizabeth Moore on Dec 26, 1813 and they had four children:
Pleasant James, John H., Mary, and Lucy (report on Pleasant Owen per Lois Owen; Roach Genforum).

Elijah and Willette had the following children:

* The family of Elijah Roach was incorrectly transcribed on the 1850 White County, TN census as Elijah NORRIS. I believe this is simply a transcriptionist error as Elijah was living in line with Norris neighbors. The Norris’ in near association are noted as born in TN while several in Elijah’s HH are noted born VA.

1. Mary Jane, born abt 1831, who married Joseph Patton. Joseph was reported as a ‘preacher’ by descendants. The couple married Oct 5, 1848 in White County, TN. Their oldest son, William, was born in White County. The couple moved first to Clinton County, KY before settling in Indiana (see 1850 White County, TN; 1860 Clinton County, KY; 1870 Sullivan County, IN).

Further reports by Rose Young state that the Roach family moved from VA to TN when Mary Jane was about 11 years old.

2. Martha Ann, born abt 1832, who married Lorenzo Dow McCormick Sept 16, 1853 in White County, TN. She married John Smith before 1870. Martha lived in Putnam County, TN throughout her life. Martha’s second husband, John, was born in Barren County, KY but he did serve in the civil war out of the White County, TN area. The civil war pension application of John Smith’s second wife, Amanda Hamilton, provides the evidence that John married Martha McCormick (see 1850 White County, TN census at home; 1860 Putnam County, TN in home with husband at father-in-law’s home, George McCormick; 1870 and 1880 Putnam County, TN census as Martha Smith).

3. James W., born 25 Dec 1832 (believe this should be 1834) in Lynchburg, Virginia; died 10 Apr 1922 in Warren County, KY. James’ death record reports him as the son of ‘Eliga’ Roach and Miss Owen, both born VA. James married Jane Melvina Wallace who was born in Pickett County, TN before 1870. The couple are found on the 1870 Cumberland County, KY census living two HHs from his brother John P. On that census their oldest child is listed as Lucinda, age 10. By 1880 James moved his family to Barren County, KY and later to Warren County, KY. His son, Thomas, also lived in Warren County as did his sister, Lucy Roach Vinson. James’ wife died in the county in 1918. On the 1920 Warren County census James is found living in the HH of his niece (misspelled on census as “Nibb”). The niece was Sarah Francis Knipp whose death record notes her born in 1874 to George Vinson and Lucy Roach. James was at home in White County, TN in 1850 (see death entries for Charlie Curtis Knipp 1854 - 1926; Sarah Francis Knipp 1874 - 1951)

4. Sarah H., born abt 1838, who married an unknown Presley and is shown on 1860 Cumberland County, KY census living with her father’s family with her young son, Elijah, age 2, noted as born in TN. Sarah was at home in White County, TN in 1850.

5. William G., born abt 1840. I believe William was the first child of Elijah and Willette to be born in TN. William G. is at home in 1850 White County, TN; at home in Cumberland County, KY. He appears to be the William G. Roach who moved to Adair County, KY by 1870 with a wife Mary. In 1880 the family appears in Hart County, KY. William G. reports his birthplace as TN, that of his parents VA. He had a son named Eliga A. born abt 1878. William served in the 37th Ky Inf Co G (see Civil War indexes for Kentucky; see record of Joshua Roach)

6. John P., born abt 1842. He was at home in White County, TN in 1850 and lived at home with the family in 1860 Cumberland County, KY. Several online posters report him as marrying Sarah Speers. He stayed in Cumberland County, KY and it is said that both he and his wife died in Texas, having moved there with a son. In 1870 he lives within two HHs of his brother, James, described above.

7. Joshua C., born abt 1844. Joshua is found at home in 1850 and 1860. He is the Joshua C. Roach who served the 37th Ky Inf, Co G (Union), joining in Glascow, Barren County, KY. Joshua died Dec 22, 1863 according to his unit‘s summary. His father (named on application jacket as Elijah Roach) applied for pension; application #137401 (see Civil War indexes for Kentucky; Kentucky Civil War Applications).

8. Lucy, born abt 1848. Lucy was at home in 1850 and 1860, is found living with the Skipworth family in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY in 1870. She married George W. Vinson whose death record reports birth in Clinton, KY, a son of George W. Vinson . George and Lucy Vinson live next door to her brother, “Gabe” and wife, “Minervy” in 1880 Cumberland County, KY. George and Lucy Vinson would later move to Warren County, KY along with her oldest brother, James. The George and Lucy Vinson family along with James and Jane Minerva Roach lived in Warren County, KY from 1900 forward. Several records there identify Lucy Roach Vinson and her death record reports her father as Elijah who was born in VA. “Mrs. Geo. Vinson” died August 6, 1925 in Warren County, KY. Her husband died there Oct 12, 1938. The couple’s daughter, Ida, married Argo R. Dennis. Ida served as witness on multiple family death certificates (see county death indexes and certificate copies; compiled census entries).

9. Thomas S., born abt 1853. Thomas appeared in his father’s HH in 1860 in KY and in 1870 is with the family in Overton, TN. Thomas married Tabitha “Hilley” and they lived in 1880 Cumberland County, KY before moving to Grayson County, Texas. Thomas had a son named Elijah A. born abt 1880. He was consistent in reporting his birth in TN, the birth place of his parents as VA.

Elijah married second Sarah Jane. Sarah is reported by some as Sarah Jane Waggoner or Wagoner. This is reported on death record of her daughter.

In 1860 we see a S.J. Roach now as wife of Elijah in Cumberland County. Their ennumeration makes the separation of the children of he and Sarah and those from his first marriage easy as the children of their marriage appear right after Elijah and Sarah. These include R. L. male age 4; N.A. female age 2; and Gabriel age 1. William G., John, Joshua, Thomas, Lucy, then Sarah and Elijah Presley then appear.

In the 1850 HH of Joseph and Mary Jane Patton appears another Roach child who I can not account for. Her name is difficult to read but appears something on the order of Surook A.. On the census she is age 8 and reported born in VA. It would seem this child could be a sister of Mary Jane and then also a child of Elijah and Willette but no further information on who she might be is apparent to me.

The children appearing with Elijah and Sarah Jane on the 1870 Overton County census are Thomas age 17, Logan age 15, Gabriel age 12, Louiza age 9, and Helen age 3. It seems Sarah Jane is widowed by 1880 and it is she who appears in 1880 Clay County, TN. However, a Stephen S. reported as a son and born abt 1865 appears along with the younger daughters. I have wondered if he could actually be a son of Joshua who was known to perish? Or perhaps the child was simply missed on the 1870 census and this family the victim of yet another census error. I have not been able to locate a Stephen of appropriate age in 1870.

Children of Elijah and Sarah Jane:

1. R. Logan, born abt 1856. Logan married Hannah Clary Jan 23, 1876 in Clay County, TN. Logan and “Annie” lived in Cumberland County, KY after their marriage. Multiple records in Cumberland County demonstrate them as the couple marrying in Clay County.

2. N.A. (female), born abt 1858. This child does not appear to have survived.

3. Gabriel, born abt 1859. There are many online trees for Gabriel, most reporting him as JAMES Gabriel Roach. However, I have seen only one record that could give this suggestion and that is his 1930 census entry. In actuality, I do not believe that census entry reads James although this is what is reported in the index. On inspection it looks more like Janer…and the ‘J’ may not be a ‘J’ at all. If some other records exists to suggest he was, in fact, James Gabriel Roach, I have not found it. I have found Gabriel on most available census wherein he appears as either Gabriel or Gabe until the 1930 entry. Gabriel married Minerva Watson. In 1880 he is living next door to his sister, Lucy and her husband, George Vinson, in Cumberland County, KY. Gabriel would settle in Clay County, TN where he raised a large family.

4. Stephen S., born abt 1865, seen in the 1880 Clay County, TN HH. Board poster “VirginiaCoop” states her grandfather as George Haggard Roach, a son of Stephen and Lucinda Pritchard. Stephen was reported to have died young and Lucinda then married Joseph Kidwell Dennis. The reports say further that he was said by family as ‘not related’ to other Cumberland County, KY Roach families but that her grandfather had an uncle ‘Log’ or ‘Logan.’ George Haggard Roach is found on Cumberland County, KY census with his mother over time. It would seem that the Lucinda Roach to “JR” Dennis would be her marriage.

5. Alice Louiza, born abt 1865. Per the online tree Jerri’s Ashes (WorldConnect) Louiza married J.R. Daniel and the couple had a son named William in 1894. They lived in Cumberland County, KY and Jerri’s Ashes reports that both Louiza and her son died of pneumonia in 1914 and are buried in the county. This tree reports having death certificates for both deaths and reports Louiza’s mother as Sarah Jane WAGONER.

6. Helen, born abt 1867. Is Helen still living with her mother in 1900 Clay County, TN? It appears to be them although Helen’s age is off by several years. No further information is known about Helen at this time. In the 1900 census Sarah reports having had 8 children, 5 surviving. Two lost children by 1900 would seem the female, N.A., shown in the Cumberland County, KY entry. Another would seem to be Stephen. It is possible the 3rd lost child never appeared on census.

In the White Co. Tn. census taken June 28, 1860 at Frank Ferry Post Office is this record:
James Fisher 37
Susannah 36
Narissa 20
Nancy 17
Sarrah 16
Mary J. 14
Martha E. 10
Ferdinand 7
William 5
James 3
This census proves Mary J was the daughter of James and Susannah Fisher.

In the 1870 White Co. census, taken June 7, 1870, District 4, Cave Post Office, House 76/76 is this record:
James Fisher 49 yr old farmer, born Tn.
Susanna 47 yr old, keeping house born Tn
Mary Jane 23 yr old daughter, without occupation
Sarah A. 25 yr old daughter, without occupation
Martha E. 20 yr old daughter, without occupation
William 15 yr old works on farm
Christopher C. 4 yr old
This is good documentation that Mary J. had brothers and sisters and again the daughter of James and Susanna Fisher.

White Co. Fisher, 59 yr old farmer, born TN
Sarah, 33 yr old daughter, keeping house
Christopher C. 14 yr old son, farm laborer.
There is no wife here...she has probably departed.

1900 White Co. Census, house 113/113, District 4:
Mary J. Cotton born Oct. 1845, widow, had 5 children 4 living.
James born May 1873, 27 yr old son, single
Thomas J. Tn. census taken June 28, 1860 at Frank Ferry Post Office is this record:
James Fisher 37
Susannah 36
Narissa 20
Nancy 17
Sarrah 16
Mary J. 14
Martha E. 10
Ferdinand 7
William 5
James 3
This census proves Mary J was the daughter of James and Susannah Fisher.

In the 1870 White Co. census, taken June 7, 1870, District 4, Cave Post Office, House 76/76 is this record:
James Fisher 49 yr old farmer, born Tn.
Susanna 47 yr old, keeping house born Tn
Mary Jane 23 yr old daughter, without occupation
Sarah A. 25 yr old daughter, without occupation
Martha E. 20 yr old daughter, without occupation
William 15 yr old works on farm
Christopher C. 4 yr old
This is good documentation that Mary J. had brothers and sisters and again the daughter of James and Susanna Fisher.

White Co. Tn. census dated June 2, 1880, 4th District, house 14/15:
James W. Fisher, 59 yr old farmer, born TN
Sarah, 33 yr old daughter, keeping house
Christopher C. 14 yr old son, farm laborer.
There is no wife here...she has probably departed.

1900 White Co. Census, house 113/113, District 4:
Mary J. Cotton born Oct. 1845, widow, had 5 children 4 living.
James born May 1873, 27 yr old son, single
Thomas J. Born August 1875, 24 yr old son, single
Stella daughter borun Feb. 1881, 19 yr old, sing;e
Henry C. son born August 1884, 15 yr old
Your Mary Jane was living in White Co. Tn. with her children in 1900...therefore her husband Samuel Cotton must have died in White Co.
Hope this helps in your search...

I thought I had copies of all Roberts and Knowles marriages before about 1900, but I can't find this one. I have several marriage records for William Knowles (different ones) but none for a Catherine Roberts at all.

I have a William B. Knowles, b. 1823 in TN, d. 7 Jun 1898 in Limestone Co., AL (unconfirmed data) who married Martha Ann Rascoe 4 Aug 1840 in White Co., TN. I have a copy of their marriage record and their census records through 1880.
