I am looking for information about William M.Cook who was married to Eula Oldham on 09-25-1910 in Obion Co., TN. William was b.09-1858 in Fulton, KY d. 1923. Eula the daughter of Isaac Oldham and Nancy E. ?? was b. 07-1884 in Tn maybe Weakley Co. and died 1925 in Weakley CO..They had 3 daughters that I know of Pauline E., Mary Louise, Ruby Frances and Margaret Panzie. The story I have about the parent's death are that William was killed while riding in a wagon with another man possible his brother when they were hit by a train. The mother died in her sleep 2 years later. The children were 10,9,8. and 5 at the time of their mother's death. William was the son of William James Cook and Susannah Joanna Bondurant.

I want to know: 1) If there is a record of William's death in an obit or the place of his burial. 2) The obit and place of burial for Eula. 3) What became of the children? I have been told that they were separated at the time of their mother's death and never saw each other again. The youngest Margaret may have lived with a pastor and his wife in the area for a period of time. I can't find any of them on the 1930 Census. Any help would be appreciated.

1920 US Census Weakley Co., TN Civil District 18
Cook, William M./Head/M/W/61/Marr/KY/KY/KY/Operator/Telephone
Cook, Eula/ Wife/F/W/34/Marr/TN/TN/TN
Cook, Pauline E./Dau/F/W/t/S/TN/KY/TN
Cook, Mary Louise/Dau/F/W/6/S/TN/KY/TN
Cook, Ruby Frances/Dau/F/W/4yr 4mo/S/TN/KY/TN
Cook, Margret Panzy/Dau/F/W/1yr 6mo/S/TN/KY/TN

Thanks Betty

1845 Slave Sale in Weakley Co.

This is just in case anyone is interested:

In the course of my research on the NICHOL family that resided in Carroll Co., TN circa 1827-1850, I have stumbled upon a lengthy court document that may be of value to anyone trying to trace local slaves of that period. It is a “writ of complaint” filed by James M. WILKINS of neighboring Weakley Co. with the judge of the District Court in Huntingdon. The complainant claims to have been swindled by James Fletcher NICHOL [a younger half-brother to my g-g-grandfather, David NICHOL], and is seeking restitution by attaching and selling James NICHOL’s share of the family farm, owned by him and two brothers since the death of their father in 1843.

According to the complaint, James NICHOL and a partner, James ADKINS, appeared at WILKINS’ home on March 20, 1845, where NICHOL bought “a negro boy named Ben & a sorrel mare & a saddle and offered to pay for them in gould [sic] coin.” WILKINS claimed that NICHOL paid him “$500 for the Boy Ben $35 for the mare & $5 for the saddle “ in coin that proved to be counterfeit, and then absconded north with partner and purchases. NICHOL was last seen at Mills Point, KY, now the town of Hickman in Fulton Co. The requisite bill of sale for the slave was executed in the name “James Stephenson,” the alias WILKINS claimed NICHOL had adopted on this occasion.

The original document and related court papers are in the Gordon Browning Museum & Genealogical Library, McKenzie,TN, where curator Jere Cox will provide copies for a small donation.
Giles POOLE of Wilson Co. and Weakley Co., TN, b.1798

This man has proven difficult to find in the records. The information I have obtained is posted here. Any additional information about his origins/wife/children will be appreciated. Any corrections to the information I have posted will also be appreciated.

Descendants of Giles Poole[1]

1. GILES1 POOLE was born 1798 in Virginia. He married ELLENDER. She was born 1796 in North Carolina.

Giles B. Poole appeared in the Weakley County, Tenn., Tax Lists in 1849, but his son, Moses L. Poole appeared there in 1847.[2] He is listed in the 10th District in the 1850 census as age 52, born in Virginia, with his wife "Ellender" 54, b. NC., along with five children.[3] Living next to him are W. H. Poole, 23, TN, and his wife Caroline, 18, TN.[4] The next adjacent house is M. L. Poole, 28 NC, and his wife Nancy, 30, VA.[5] Also living in the house is Sarah "Colas" age 65, born VA, who is almost certainly Nancy's mother.

Giles Pool appears in the 1840 Census in Wilson Co., Tenn., age 40-50.[6] [5] The family structure does not match in terms of the number of girls, but everything else seems to match. The only other Pool I have found in Wilson Co., Tenn., in 1840 was Aaron Pool, who was also 40-50, but had another male in the same age range in his household.[7] For the moment, I am assuming that these two men are related. I have not located Giles Pool in the 1830 Census, although he reportedly moved to Wilson County about 1825.[8] Certainly the birthplaces of his children as indicated in 1850 is consistent with this hypothesis.[9]

Additional information about this family obtained from an Internet file.[10]

A possible clue to the origin of Giles Poole is the finding of a deed from

Moses Parker to Josiah Pool in Dobbs Co., N. C., about 1789.[11] [10] Moses Parker is also present in Weakley County, Tenn., and the same deed index show Joseph and Josiah Pool selling land to Aaron Pool about 1784.[12]

Children of GILES POOLE and ELLENDER are:

i. MARTHA A.2 POOLE, b. 18 April 1834, Wilson Co., Tenn.; d. 7 December 1870, Weakley Co., Tenn.; m. THOMAS HENRY CARLTON,[13] 28 October 1852, Weakley Co., Tenn.; b. 26 June 1832, Weakley Co., Tenn.; d. 2 May 1906, Weakley Co., Tenn.

Martha Poole, 17, is living in the household of her father in 1850.[14] Her husband, Thomas Carlton is living nearby.[15] Their marriage on 27 October 1852 is of record.[16] [3]

ii. MOSES LEVI POOLE, b. 1822, North Carolina; m. (1) NANCY G. WILLIS, 6 January 1845, Wilson Co., Tenn.; b. about 1820, Virginia; d. about 1855, Weakley Co., Tenn.; m. (2) MARGARET F. CATES, 25 May 1857, Weakley Co., Tenn.

iii. ELISHA F. POOLE, b. 1824, North Carolina; m. AMANDA JENKINS, 28 September 1857, Weakley Co., Tenn.

iv. WHITSON H. POOLE, b. 1827, Tennessee; d. after 1880, Green Co., Ark.; m. CAROLINA PHILLIPS, 21 November 1845, Gibson Co., Tenn.

The 1880 Census placed him in Union, Greene, Arkansas at age 65, birthplace Tennessee; father and mother from Georgia. Living at home was Caroline, his wife, son Henry, age 22, daugthers Susan B. age 16 and Mary E. age 15. It also listed the son as being born in Tennessee and the two daughters born in Arkansas.[17]

v. JOHN POOLE, b. 1829, Wilson Co., Tenn.

vi. STEPHEN POOLE, b. 31 December 1836, Wilson Co., Tenn.; d. 8 June 1917, Lake Arthur, Chaves Co., N. M.; m. MARGARET COFFEY in Lavaca Co., Texas before October 1861.[18]

vii. WILLIAM J. POOLE, b. 1837, Wilson Co., Tenn.; d. after 1920, Gibson Co., Tenn.; m. LOUISE M. LASATER, 28 February 1861, Weakley Co., Tenn.

I don't have much on William J. Pool(e). He married Louisa Milsana Lasater in 1861 in Weakley Co. Tn. He was on the census in 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, & 1900 in Weakley Co. Tn. In 1920 he was in Gibson Co. Tn. with his daughter & husband Ethel and George Rone.[19]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] Updated 30 April 2006.
[2] Weakley Co., Tenn., Tax List 1847, 10th Civil District, (M.
In 1830, there were two Campbell families in the Weakley Co census - Daniel and Wm. In the 1830 Carroll Co census, there were two other Campbell families - Thos and A. (I think this was Alexander). I am looking for the relationship between these four families, names of family members, etc. Alexander was married to Sally Pate (daughter of Stephen and Honor Sweeney Pate of Richmond Co NC).

Alaphar would have married sometime around the mid 1820's. Her only son, Fidelio Williams, was born in KY in 1828. I think her husband died sometime around his birth. I am looking for any Williams that married a Green in the late to mid 1820's.

I am descendent of William and Nancy (Chun or Chunn) Killebrew, and am wondering if there could be a connection between Killebrew and Killbrew. My ancestors had 21 sons, and I am desperately trying to find connections to any of their descendents. I thought perhaps somewhere down the line someone changed their name to Killbrew by omitting an "e". I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me. I also remember seeing some where that some of our ancestors had at one time lived in Weakley, TN. Please advise if you can be of any help to me. Thank you, Nancy

James ALLEN may have had a
daughter named Elmira b.c1820 who married William Anderson
DORITY in Granville Co. NC in 1841. James ALLEN
was the son of Samuel ALLEN of Granville Co.
Elmira/WA DORITY both died in the spring of 1861
and left minor children, James & Timothy.
I am a descendant of these Weakley county, TN families:

1. James H. MORRIS m. Harriett Savilda JOHNSON 14 April 1859 (GG Grandparents)
2. James F. MORRIS m. Sarah Catherine FRIELDS 27 October 1858 (GG Grandparents)

I have traced the FRIELDS line to Edward FREELS (7G GF), but Sarah Catherine's mother Zilphia FARMER FRIELDS (wife of Jarrett FRIELDS) b. 11 January 1810 in KY; d. 5 February 1892 in Weakley County, TN, is a brick wall. I cannot find anything on her parents or ancestors.

I have NO information on the parents and ancestors of James F. MORRIS (b. 13 September 1832; d. 13 July 1901) or James H. MORRIS (b. c.1838; d. ????).

I would like information on the FARMER line and the MORRIS lines.

I am doing some family history in my Great Grandmother's family and do not have much information on her Great Grandfather, Andy Smyth. I do know that he is buried in Weakley Co. (Gleason), but where he is buried at and who he was married to is something I don't know. I am planning to take a trip to the county this May, and only have a day to collect all the information I can about the Smyth family. Any help I can get about him and his family (if anybody else from his family is buried there too),would be most helpful. Thank you for all your help in this manner.

We may be the leading Kittrell resource out there and we are free to descendants and spouses and helpful to everybody else.

We have a family tree of nearly 35000 (35K) Kittrell descendants and spouses that is totally private and a MyFamily site that is private and free and available to all Kittrell descendants and spouses.

Just post or e-mail if you fit the bill and want to see thousands of bits of Kittrell info.

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

After that period of homesteading in various counties, many in some branches moved to other states including many times over Tennessee, with Sumner appearing to be one of the first stops and many times over Maury County and other coumties including listed alphabetically Anderson, Cannon, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Hamilton, Henry Hickman, Jackson, Knox, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Meigs, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Rutherford, Shelby, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, White, Williamson, Wilson and Weakley Counties, among many other, later became the home of many Kittrells of one line or another or multiple lines.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

And we will be most pleased to find more missing links broken from our tree due to distance and change of generations to those who barely know a whit of their Kittrell kin.

Hello,
I am trying to locate church records and a photo of Hays Chapel Methodist Church located in eastern Weakley County on Hunt Road, and less than a mile from the Henry County Line, and a few miles west of Cottage Grove, TN. The church was founded in 1848 on land donated by Weakley County farmer Samuel Hays (1790-1875). Samuel Hays moved from Roberston County,TN to Henry County, TN ca 1832 and settled near the Whitlock community. He then moved to District 5 Weakley County in 1839. Services at the church continued until possibly the early 1930's. The original church building was torn down. All that is left is a cemetery in front of where the church building once stood. Some of the first trustees of the church in 1848 were William Old, Pleasant I. Fiser, Archibald J. Fiser, Samuel Hunt, and Lewis Lafon. I would love to hear from anyone out there who has any information concerning Hays Chapel Methodist Church.

Surnames: HAMILTON/WOOD/HARRIS/HENDON
I am looking for any info regarding GEORGE WASHINGTON HAMILTON

The 1910 census lists him as being in the Donelson district of Shelby County along with his mother Elizabeth (84)b About 1826.

and his 3 children...

GEORGE WASHINGTON HAMILTON b.About 1861

son NORRIS HAMILTON (listed as Novice on the census record)
b. 1 September 1894 (birthday info from the WW1 draft registry)

another son GEORGE W. HAMILTON JR. (My ancestor)
b. May 1901 and a sister ANNA MAY HAMILTON called ANNIE b. About 1905.

Family legend states that their mother who's surname was JOLLY (no one remembers her first name for certain and I can't find it anywhere)died young when her son George was between the ages of 4-6...it has also been said it was not terribly long after she had ANNA MAY.
So the Unknown JOLLY would've died sometime between 1905-1907.

Its is also alleged that GEORGE WASHINGTON HAMILTON Sr was dead by 1915. His son George Jr. was often called "MAN".

NORRIS and GEORGE W. married sisters,

NORRIS married MARY WOOD and GEORGE W. married RACHEL AMELIA WOOD she was often called "MEELIE".

Norris and Mary are on the 1920 and 1930 Census in Arkansas and Alabama.

It is also rumored that George W. married at 16 and had a son called Nolan before later marrying Amelia.

The Hamiltons moved around alot, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and even Georgia at one point but George W. and Amelia ended up back in West Tennessee for the rest of their lives and both died in Weakley County. They had 12 children together and have MANY MANY descendants in the Weakley County area.

RACHEL AND MARY were the daughters of JOHN PINKNEY WOOD AND HASETINE HARRIS aka HASSIE HARRIS.

HASSIE was a descendant of Benjamin Norris Hendon through his daughter Nancy and Mark Strickland Harris.

JOHN "PINK" WOOD is the son of RUFUS D. WOOD and RACHEL E. LOKEY

I have ALOT more info on this family, especially the Hendon's/Harris' and Lokeys

CORBETT & SMITH Family Documents at Meek Library, Martin, TN.

One group of documents at the Meek Library consists of papers from the next door neighbor of David F. Spencer when he lived in Renselaer Co., NY, Stephentown in 1830. The file is called the papers of Daniel Smith. David Spencer had a relationship with that family of stone masons that lasted past 1851 when the families were separated by several state boundries, and we know of letters exchanged between David Spencer and the son of Daniel Smith, he being Daniel G. Smith of Onondaga Co., NY. Can anyone shed any light on the relationship between Daniel Smith, owner of the original papers and the Corbett Family who provided the papers to the library? Thanks, Regards, Wendell Spencer

Tristram PARKER, d. 1851, Weakley Co., TN

The following information has been accumulated about Tristram Parker. I am seeking information that will confirm/refute his descent from 1830 (year of death) Moses Parker of Marlboro Co., S. C.

4. TRISTRAM4 PARKER (MOSES3, NATHANIEL2, JOHN1) was born 10 May 1795 in Marlboro Co., S. C., and died 23 October 1851 in Weakley Co., Tenn. He married NANCY. She was born 1798 in South Carolina, and died before 1860 in Weakley Co., Tenn.

"Tristram Parker married Sarah Newton."[1]

Tristram Parker appears in the 1840 Census for Weakley Co., Tenn.[2] He is present in the 12th Civil District in the 1843 Tax List,[3] and is also listed in the 1850 Census in the 12th Civil District of Weakley Co., Tenn.[4] The birthplaces for his children show that he moved to Tennessee sometime between 1828 and 1832. He is not in Weakley Co., Tenn., in the 1830 Census, so we can say that they moved about 1831.

Comparing the family structure, we have all five males accounted for, but only the youngest girl. There are two girls who presumably married between 1840 and 1850. Examination of the marriage records of Weakley Co., Tenn., show four marriages for brides named Parker from 1843 to 1850.[5] Curiously, two of the brides were named Elizabeth and two were named Nancy. Elizabeth Parker married Alexander Campbell on 26 December 1845. They are present in the 12th Civil District (#68) which makes them near neighbors of Tristram Parker. She is listed as 24 and born in N. C. They were alive and living in the 12th District in 1880, when Elizabeth Campbell said both of her parents were born in North Carolina as was she. This Alexander Campbell is surely a grandson of 1839 Stephen Pate, as the Pate family were also near neighbors. Elizabeth M. Parker married M. D. Stout on 24 October 1843. There are a lot of men named Stout in the 12th Civil District, but I did not find an M. D. Stout among them. By the process of elimination, though, the latter marriage seems most probable.

Nancy Parker married John Baker 7 December 1846. The 1850 Census shows J. Baker, 29, TN, and Nancy, 30, SC, with their children in the 4th Civil District, #152. Nancy Parker married John T. White 6 November 1844. I have not been able to locate a suitable John White in Weakley Co. in the 1850 Census, although there are several "J" and "John" Whites listed. I think it is likely that the Nancy Parker who married John Baker is the eldest daughter of Tristram Parker.

The 1850 Census shows six families named Parker in addition to Tristram Parker. Two others, both "F. Parker" are in the 6th Civil District, one 47 and married to Sarah (p. 413, #960) and one 38, married to Pernelia. (p. 452, #921) and were born in South Carolina. Since Jessie and John Parker claimed both parents were born in North Carolina in the 1880 Census (see below), it is notable that the other four are from there. Unfortunately, none of these other Parkers are living close to Tristram, and all were identified by initial only, so it is quite difficult to connect any of these men to 1830 Moses Parker of Marlboro Co., S. C.

Children of TRISTRAM PARKER and NANCY are:

5. i. JESSE5 PARKER, b. 19 December 1823, Marlboro Co., S. C.; d. 16 September 1902, Weakley Co., Tenn.

ii. NANCY PARKER, b. about 1820, Marlboro Co., S. C.; m. JOHN BAKER, 7 December 1846, Weakley Co., Tenn.

iii. JAMES PARKER, b. about 1828, Marlboro Co., S. C.

iv. ELIZABETH M. PARKER, b. about 1829, Marlboro Co., S. C.; m. M. D. STOUT, 24 October 1843, Weakley Co., Tenn.

v. JOHN PARKER, b. about 1832, Weakley Co., Tenn.

vi. WILLIAM PARKER, b. about 1834, Weakley Co., Tenn.

vii. THOMAS PARKER, b. about 1835, Weakley Co., Tenn.

viii. CAROLINE PARKER, b. 1838, Weakley Co., Tenn.

ix. MOSES PARKER, b. about 1841, Weakley Co., Tenn.

5. JESSE5 PARKER (TRISTRAM4, MOSES3, NATHANIEL2, JOHN1) was born 19 December 1823 in Marlboro Co., S. C., and died 16 September 1902 in Weakley Co., Tenn. He married ELIZABETH CLARK 27 August 1856 in Weakley Co., Tenn., daughter of BENJAMIN CLARK and WINNIFRED WILLIAMS. She was born 4 April 1830 in Anson Co., N. C., and died 29 July 1905 in Weakley Co., Tenn.

Tristram Parker is the head of household in the only Parker family in the 12th Civil District in 1850. He has Isaac, 26, and James 22, living with him, but not Jesse. The family structure matches that of the report for Tristram Parker in 1840 perfectly, with five boys. Since Isaac at 26 would have been born about 1824, I think it is probable that he is Jesse, born 19 December 1823. This conclusion is strengthened by the finding that John Parker, 28, TN, is a boarder in the household of Jessie Parker and Elizabeth in 1860.[6] Shown are Laura, b. about 1858, and Marietta, b. 1860. There is also a Mannia Loving, 8, boarder, and Pinking Gobson, 21, farm laborer, in the household. John apparently lived with Jesse for the rest of his life. In the 1900 census, John C. Parker, b. Feb. 1832, is specifically identified as the brother of Jesse Parker, b. Dec. 1823, and Betty, b. Apr. 1830.[7] With this information, we can equate “Issac” from 1850 with Jesse. I have looked at a copy of this census, and it is quite clearly written, and the name is clearly intended by be Isaac, although it looks to be spelled “Isaak.”

The marriage of Jesse Parker and Elizabeth Clark is recorded in Weakley Co., Tenn., 27 August 1856. The Clark family had also been in Henry Co., Tenn. Jessie Parker and Elizabeth Parker remained in the 12th Civil District for the rest of their lives.[8] Interestingly, both Jessie and his brother John claimed both parents were born in North Carolina in the 1880 Census.[9] Jessie and "Betty" Clark are buried in the Everett Chapel Pentecostal Cemetery, Weakley Co., Tenn.[10] The dates shown are from their tombstones.

One curiosity from the census is that James Parker, b. Jan. 1828 in NC and his wife Martha A. Parker, b. May 1838 in TN are living one house away from Jessie in 1880 and next door in 1870 and 1900. Given that Moses Parker's land was in both Marlboro Co., S. C., and Richmond Co., N. C., I strongly suspect a family connection to this James, but have insufficient data to make the connection.[11]

Children of JESSE PARKER and ELIZABETH CLARK are:

i. EMMA6 PARKER, b. 17 September 1866, Weakley Co., Tenn.; d. 19 October 1934, Carroll Co., Tenn.; m. WILLIAM BAKER EVERETT, 7 February 1884, Weakley Co., Tenn.; b. 27 July 1863, Carroll Co., Tenn.; d. 24 August 1898, Carroll Co., Tenn.

Emma Parker Everett is buried in Blooming Grove Cemetery, Carroll Co., Tenn.[12] In the 1900 Census, she says her birthday was Apr 1865, that she was born in Tennessee, and both parents were born in N. C. She is in Carroll Co., 3rd Civil District, #358. Children's birth dates from the 1900 census. Their names are included in her obituary published in the McKenzie Banner.

ii. JAMES PARKER, b. about 1858, Weakley Co., Tenn.

James Parker is 12 in the 1870 Census, and is not living at home in 1880. He does not appear in the 1860 Census as he should, although there is a Laura, b. 1858, who is listed only in 1860. As with his father, it is possible this is a case of the same person with different names used. The transcribers have listed this name as "Launa."

iii. MARIETTA PARKER, b. 1860, Weakley Co., Tenn.; d. Bef. 1867, Weakley Co., Tenn.

iv. MATTIE PARKER, b. about 1867.

v. ROBERT THOMAS PARKER, b. 10 July 1869, Weakley Co., Tenn.; d. 16 December 1946, Weakley Co., Tenn.; m. MARY NEVA; b. 1872; d. 1914.

Robert Thomas Parker and Mary Neva Parker are buried in Everett Chapel Pentecostal Cemetery, Weakley Co., Tenn., next to his parents, Jessie and Betty Everett.[13] Dates recorded are from their tombstones.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] McPherson, Lib.
Pedlar STUNTSON, Palmerville TN 1880

After about 20 years, I have smashed down my brick wall.

I contacted this group about the killing of a Pedlar Stuntson in Palmerville TN by a Gatewood around 1880. I now know this person was Rufus P. Stunson. I also know that the father of Stunson filed charges on two Gatewood brothers. One was C.O. Gatewood and the other is believed to be Joseph Gatewood A.K.A. Green Gatewood.

I have enough information to support my case; however, if I could obtain the court records and/ or the charges filed by Lewis Stunson against the Gatewoods, it would prove my case. Does anyone know how I can obtain these records? The shooting took place in Palmerville TN around 1880. Palmerville is in Weakley County TN.
