Hi -
My name is Carrol Johnson and my great-great granfather was Basil Baker from Tennessee. He moved to Texas about 1837. All three of his wives had their roots in Tennessee. Basil had a brother named Samuel who lived in Weakley County, Tennessee. Samuel was a large landowner there and had many children. Samuel was also a state representative during the Civil War. The town of Greenfield, TN was founded on lands that he once owned. I'm thinking there is a good chance that your William was a grandson of Samuels. Before I do any research, though, I would like for you to reply to this message, since your original posting is quite old.

Hello Mary

Thanks for your kind offer of help at the archives. Since I am in Texas, you bet I will accept your offer. My Samuel Baker was born July 6, 1809 in Bedford County, VA. He died May 5, 1885 in Weakley County, TN. He married Frances B. Patterson who was born August 15, 1813. She died December 4, 1873 in Weakley County, TN. Together, they had many children, one of which was Thomas Jefferson Baker who was born October 8, 1848. Their eldest son was Samuel T. Baker who was born August 29, 1869. He died May 13, 1942 and is buried in Highland Cemetery in Greenfield, TN. I hope this is of help to you. If this is the Samuel Baker you have been searching for, please contact me by email at carroljohnson1@netscape.net. There is a website dedicated to the exchange of info between descendants of Basil Baker, who was born before 1775. Viewing of the website is by invitation only which requires that I have your email address. I am the Baker family website administrator. We currently have a half dozen or so members and we are searching for more.

Anna (BAKER) HATCHER 1798-1830

Hi,
It is interesting to see these discussions of the Bakers in Weakley County appear on the genforum. I have done some research, had a very few communications on these Bakers, and gathered some source data, but have not put any real effort into compiling the source data that I have into a family tree format. My gggg-grandmother was the mentioned Anna (Baker) Hatcher (1798-1830), who was married to Eli Hatcher. My research has shown that Anna had brothers James, Martin, Samuel, and a sister Matilda .... my research also shows that their father was named Basil, and old census data made it appear that there might be another sibling or 2 ... but to find that they had another brother in Tennessee is a new discovery for me (particularly a brother named Basil) but not a total surprise .... I suppose that Basil was a Jr.. Per the bible birth records of the children of Eli & Anna (Baker) Hatcher, their first 3 children were born in Bedford Co., VA, with the last being born there early in 1825, and the next being born in Tennessee in 1827, puts their arrival in Henry Co. TN a little earlier than 1830, and at circa 1826. I am pretty sure that Eli & Anna moved to Tennessee at the same time and along with James, Martin, & Samuel .... but I have not seen any data about the brother Basil.

My relations to the Bakers is a little distant, but also a little complicated. My maternal grandfather, William 'Eli' Tillman (1894-1970), was named after his grandfather William Eli "Billy" Hatcher (1851-1931). Billy Hatcher was the son of James Jordan Hatcher (1827-1852), and was named after his grandfathers, William Hillis (1801-1880) and Eli Hatcher (1801-1830 .... wife Anna Baker). My grandfather Eli Tillman was also a great-grandson of Elizabeth "Bettie" Patterson (1815-1898) who was a sister to the Frances "Fannie" Patterson (1813-1873) who married Anna's brother Samuel Baker. A g-grandfather to my maternal grandmother, Lessie (Jones) Tillman, was Charles. R. Patterson, who was a brother to Fannie (Patterson) Baker. A few years after the of Eli & Anna (Baker) Hatcher, Anna's brother Samuel Baker became guardian of my ggg-grandfather James J. Hatcher. So Samuel was my uncle one way by blood, two ways by marriage, and I guess a step-gggg-grandfather.

It might be interesting to note that MaryCarol Shrupp (who is the host of the Weakley County genealogy website) and her husband Fred, recently purchased the old Samuel T. Baker house in Greenfield (which is across the street from my parents home) and they are using the house now as a weekend getaway ..... but are planning to move there permanently after Fred retires .... they also have some good plans for doing some restoration on that nice old victorian house. MaryCarol and I are cousins multiple ways through the Tillmans and Campbells, and I spent a couple of hours visiting with them in that old Baker house during the holidays a couple of months back. (I had been last been in that old Samuel T. Baker house in the late 1950s, but my grandparents rented a room in that house from the Bakers circa 1930, for my mother's oldest sister, so that she could live in town and attend high school..)

A couple of years back, I helped Nel Hatcher (who hosts a Hatcher Family genealogy website) some with her Hatcher research on the descendants of Eli & Anna (Baker) Hatcher. That data can be seen on her website under the category of "William the Immigrant Descendants" at:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nhatcher/hatsurn.htm

Due to limited space for posts, I will make follow-up postings showing the source data that I have on hand for the above.

Genealogy of the Family of James Caudle
This is copied from "Our Kin, Past and Present", copyright 1979 by Delma Turnbow Freeman, (b. 1903), 312 pages. This work is available at the genealogy library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) in Salt Lake City, Utah. This work is a genealogy on the family with the surname of Turnbow. The mother of the author was Cora Etta (Caudle) Turnbow.

JAMES Caudle, birthdate and place unknown, and his wife MARY, born 1780 or 1781 in North Caroline {sic}, were the parents of sons; WILLIAM, MARK, JAMES JR., BENNETT, and we believe there was a son JOHN. All of these sons were married before 1830, and all, except Bennett, were living near the parents in Henry Co., Tenn., in 1830. It is not known what year James Caudle and his family went to Henry Co., but deed records prove they were there in the early part of 1828. A deed made Feb. 15, 1828 shows James Caudle bought land there from James Greer and Samuel McCorkle, paying two hundred fifty five dollars for a tract of 102 acres, described as being "a part of a 500 acre tract granted by the State of Tenn., to said Greer and McCorkle." Another deed shows James Caudle bought in 1838, a tract of 100 acres from James and Samuel Baker, and John Meadows.

The sons, William and Mark Caudle, also bought Land in Henry Co. On Nov. 11, 1830, William bought, from Mark Patterson (my note: Mark Patterson was father of Frances Patterson, who married Samuel Baker), "a certain tract . . . containing 52 acres and 128 poles, lying and being in Henry Co., on the waters of the middle fork of Obion."

PATTERSON CEMETERY PLACE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
by LeRoy Baker

Strange but true are many facts of Greenfield history, as is
evident by what may be seen in the old Patterson Cemetery, inside
the city limits, and which was a burying ground some 22 years
before the town came into being.

The first grave ever made in this old graveyard is as plainly
marked as if it had been made in 1967. All lettering can be read
easily at the a long distance. This pioneer cemetery contains
the graves of a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren of a United
States President and Governor of Tennessee. It also contains the
grave of the man who has been called the “founder of Greenfield”
and his wife.

The late Oscar Elam, who lived to be 90 is responsible for most
of the facts printed here. This first grave is that of James J.
Hatcher who died August 21, 1852, twenty three years before the
building of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1873-74. Standing
by the grave of his great grandfather is Will Edd Akin of
Greenfield. Mr. Akin is 72. Other great grandchildren of Mr.
Hatcher, who has been dead for 115 years, are Joe and Thomas
Akin, Mrs Iva Corum, Hall McAdams, Mrs. Mary Elinor Dueberry, and
Eli and Fred Tillman, all of Greenfield. Jim C. Tillman of
Chicago, a frequent visitor here, is also a fourth-generation
descendant as are a number of other out-of-town people. The wife
of James F. Hatcher, Jane HILLIS Hatcher, died in 1910 and is
buried in a family plot west of town. [Hillis Cemetery ?]

A fact known to but a few, perhaps, is that the wife of James K.
Polk, Jr.. son of President James K. Polk, and her two infant
children, Knox and Ella, are buried in Patterson Cemetery. Mrs.
Polk, who died at age 20, was a sister of the late Oscar Elam,
who lives only a few steps from the graveyard. Lettering on
these markers is still readable after some 90 years.

About the center of the burying ground is the tomb of the man who
has been called the “founder of Greenfield”, Samuel Baker, and
his wife Frances Patterson Baker. Mr Baker is said to have owned
most of what is now Greenfield when it became a town. Standing
at their graves is a fourth-generation direct descendant, LeRoy
Baker, who is just one of the hundreds who have descended from
this couple who had 16 children. Perhaps the oldest of these,
was a granddaughter, Mrs. Lula Lipscomb Ross, who died a year ago
at 96.

Most present day buriels are in the cemetery across the street
known as Morris graveyard, but occasionally one is held in this
historical Patterson burying ground. If many of those sleeping
out there could rise up, what a story they could tell!

PHOTO 1- Distant Relative - Will Edd Akin stands behind the
gravemarker of James J. Hatcher, his great grandfather, Mr.
Hatcher died in 1852, 115 years ago at age 27.

PHOTO 2 - Founder of Greenfield - This stone marks the grave of
Samuel Baker, generally regarded as the “founder of Greenfield”,
and his wife, Frances Patterson Baker. LeRoy Baker, pictured at
this site, is a fourth-generation direct descendant of Mr. and
Mrs. Baker.

PHOTO 3- Related to President - These gravestones mark the
burying places of a daughter-in-law of a United States President
and her two infant children. Mrs. James K. Polk Jr.’s husband
was the son of President James K. Polk. She is the sister of the
late Oscar Elam and an aunt of Robert [guessing-only bert shows
up on xerox page], who lives near the cemetery.
