Dave,
I have several Martin Y tests brewing at FTDNA right now and will watch for your kit matches when they are finished. We are trying to tie our families back together, and I know some left Burke, NC for Warren Co. One female (and those are so hard to trace) Martin we can place there for sure was Nellie Martin Watson (married Peter Watson and both from Burke.) Several sons of Thomas Martin and Isaac Martin also came to Warren and can be found in those early census records.

Direct-line descendant Martin males needed for DNA testing. We are trying to tie together, or untangle, the Martin lines of Burke / Caldwell North Carolina as paper trails are exhausted. We have been able to connect Martins in Lincoln / Catawba with Martins in Burke / Caldwell through Y DNA and hope to piece together even more. We know some of these Martin lines scattered out to Warren County, Tennessee and surrounding regions. If you are a direct male Martin descendant with roots in Burke / Caldwell / Lincoln Counties, North Carolina, or you know one who may be interested; please contact for more information on the Martin DNA Project.

Would anyone happen to have a GEDCOM or history of the McCormack family that lived or perhaps still lives in the Warren County, Tennessee area? I'm researching this line that might have originated in Virginia, made its way to Tennessee with additional stops in Mississippi and Alabama.

Somehow my gut tells me that most if not all McCormack's in this county are related.
I'm looking for info on my gg grandfather's mill. His name was William Pace Casey also known as Uncle Billy Casey. It was on the Barron Fork of the Collins River around the Caney Branch/Jacksboro community.

I've got a newspaper article from 1982 talking about the "lost" community of Warren County. It was called Fountain Springs and it's near Jacksboro . There was a road that originally ran north from the Shelbyville Rd. towards Shady Grove, crossing the river where the mill stood. The road closed in the 1930s.

It says John Lemmons possibly built the damn. Other known operators where: James H.B. Hall, Caleb H. Gilley, Milton Keel, Casey, Starkey, Mr. Mayo, John and Lela Blankenship and Thomas Tolliver.

Recently a cousin went down to the mill and said the mill pond and the mill race are still there. The family story is there are Indians buried near the Casey Mill Pond next to the old barn.

The article mentions about 30 surnames. If anybody is interested or knows ANYTHING about William Pace Casey(Uncle Billy Casey)please contact me!!

Tara Foresman
tef81@ymail.com

I am looking for information on a Sarah J Owens and a Cora Sparkman Owens... Records I have researched so far indicated Sarah was born in 1847 or 1850. She was a widow and only had 1 son -- Charles "Charley" Owens (born 1862 but some records so he was born in 1875)
Charley had 2 wives. His 1st wife was Cora Sparkman. His second wife was Love Gibbs.
If anyone has information on Sarah's maiden name or parent and date of death, pls let me know.
For Cora, she was in the family census in 1900 but her husband remarried in 1905 so we think she passed away between 1900-1905....
Any information you can share is greatly appreciated.

i just seen this when I got in from work tonight. Daylight actualy covers a large range part of Short Mountain,Blues Hill,Lucky, and if your heading towards Woodbury once your out past Newtown any road to your right is or I should say was considered Daylight to my family. My parents lived across the road from my grandparents Dan and Martha Jane Jones on the old Tom Dick Hennessee farm on what is now Dan Jones Rd.,they moved to town when I was 5 but I stayed weekends, holidays, and my summers with them and my great Aunt Zora Jones Hawkins. My grandfather always took us swimming at Charles Creek across the road from the Daylight post office and it had been out of business for some time then and I would always play in there and there was a tree growing up thru the floor and the old mail slots were still there then. I even have an old calender I found there from the 40s I think,my mother has it somewhere. My Aunt Zora and her husband lived a little ways down from the post office in a 2 story farm house with the creek going right in front of it. The house is gone now but I remember my Dad saying that it was the old Walker farm and Im not sure but some of the Walkers might still own the land up behind it. I have an auction flyer from when Aunt Zora and Uncle Johnny sold it and moved on Nashville Hwy. about where Redmons carpet is now. My uncle Gary and his freinds always used to go camping on the creek growing up,we all hung out there. It sure doesnt look anything like it did then. Yes the road would get flooded and my uncle and his buddys would go frog gigging along that stretch in front of the post office and even when it would rain frogs would be all over the road so when I started driving I wouldnt drive thru there, didnt wont to squash the frogs. I was one of those kids that loved being with my elders and so I can remember alot of what they talked about of their days and their old fashioned ways on the farm from gardening to slaughtering. I think it was called Daylight because when I was a lil girl we stayed outside into the night and even when the moon wasnt full it seemed to have a moonlight glow to it. I hope to stay in touch with you in sharing Daylight memories.

At this point, I have satisfied myself that John W. Ford is the son of Zachary Daniel Ford and Mary Polly Gordon of Smith Co., TN. In his Smith County History articles, Dr. J. W. Bowen writes: "J.W. Roulstone sold [the Carthage Gazette] to John W. Ford, who had learned the printers' trade in the office at Carthage, and he took it first to Sparta, and from thence to McMinnville, where he published a paper for many years. Ford was a brother of C. C. Ford of Snow Creek." Since Dr. Bowen married the first cousin of C. C. and J. W. Ford, I think he is a reliable source.

To my knowledge, neither Zachary Ford nor his father Christopher had a son named Stephen. I am hoping to identify some of the other Fords in Tennessee as I wonder if some of them are cousins of some degree.
I am researching John W. Ford, the TN newspaper editor who lived in Warren County for some time. He served as Postmaster between 1845–1850 in McMinnville. It maybe that his wife's name is Elizabeth Rowland and that her family lived in Warren Co. with them. The Fords moved to Hamilton Co. around 1850; then moved back to Warren Co. abt 1870.

The following are the basic facts about John W. Ford. I have a good deal of information about his work and public life. Any leads on family connections would be appreciated.
I know they had Emma bess-married Bechard Rogers,Ether/Esther married Henry c Smartt,Irra George Claborne died in Washington,Tn,Willie married MAry Curtis, and Johnny Lee married Hallie Whitman.Rufus had a dau. by mary hobbs woodlee, named Eoda that married James w turner as you probably already know.Emma and Bechard moved to Lewisburg,Tn and are buried at Whorley Cem. with a lot of other Rogers family. They were moonshiners.I was told Emma went barefoot all the time because she didn't have any shoes.I wish I could find out more about these Warren cty family connections.I've had all kinds of pictures and information sent to me on my mom's family, but on these people from my dad's side,I haven't had much luck.

Hi, I have been told that Holland is probably buried in Morton Memorial Cem. in Tarlton. He does not have a marker though. I was told that there was a row of river bed rocks that was there about 30 years ago but were washed away in the 80s by a flood. His son Holland Jr has two children buried there.

Winfred was my great uncle, he passed away in 2006. His wife Evelyn taught school for many years and she'll be turning 90 in September.

My grandfather is Arland Casey and his brothers were Winfred, Glenn, J.B. and Donald. My grandaddy is the only brother still living. The mill I was trying to find info on belonged to their grandfather. My grandfather didn't know much about him because he died when he was 2 years old.

Do you think that I might could find info about the mill by looking in Cannon county? I have looked in Coffee, but can't find a thing!

On one of your post you had Starkey listed on the surname. Do you know anything about the Starkey family that was there in the 1800's?

Tara

I have surveyed what remains of the Fountain Springs cemetery, but havn't looked for the mill. I don't live very far from it, maybe 5 or 6 miles. I know of two more mills, one on Tic Tac road (Barnes Mill) and at the forgotten community of Clarmont on Bullpen Creek. Someone has placed a monument that looks fairly new for the Clemmons family.

Doug Malone

I have all the cemetery books for Warren County. I am not finding a Center Hill Cemetery, although there is a Centertown Cemetery. In the "C" Cemetery book, looking up H.J. Green it lists in Concord Cemetery:
Green, Infant 13 Oct 1876-2 Nov 1876 (infant of S.A. and H.J.(Potter) Green)
Green, Charley 8 Jan 1877-21 Oct 1879 (Son of H.J. and Melvina(____) Green
I don't have the time this morning to look up H.J. Green in the other books, but will this evening after work.
Is H. J. a male or female? In the 2 above listings, the 1st one apparently is a female, and the 2nd one is a male.

Hi Mary,
It would be nice to find a connection to another Smith in Franklin Co. So far we haven't been able to find any relatives of David S. Smith that was married to Mary McDaniel. Somewhere David stated that he was born in Warren Co and they moved to Franklin Co about the time he would've been 8 yrs old. I'll have to look back through my papers and see if I see anything. I see in the 1850 census there is a 42 yr old Mary McDaniel that has young daughter named Mary McDaniel also. I don't know if that's the Mary that David married or not but I would think it is.
You can email me at dwestervelt@gmail.com if you like and we can compare what we have.
Thanks,
Deb

I also have Smiths in Franklin Co., TN. My ggg-grandparents are Charles Wood and Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith. She was born c. 1816 and they were married in 1839 in Franklin Co., TN. In the 1850 Franklin Co. census there is a James McDaniel (12 yrs.) in their household and I'm not sure why. I think this same James McDaniel married Paralee Smith (14 yrs.) who is also in their household. Paralee Smith may be Elizabeth Smith's sister or daughter from another marriage. Charles Wood also has a Basil Wood in his household who may be Charles's brother. This Basil Wood marries a Mary McDaniel in 1851 in Franklin Co., TN.

I do not know Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith's parents names. I'm not for sure that Smith is actually her maiden name because I don't know if Charles Wood was her 1st husband. The family story is she met Charles Wood at a brush arbor meeting in Franklin Co., TN. I have often wondered if any of the other Smiths in Franklin County were her relatives. Since you mentioned that your David Smith married a McDaniel and oftentimes families intermarried, I thought we might have a connection and you might even be able to help me with why James McDaniel is living with my Charles Wood family. I look forward to hearing anything you might know.

Thanks,
Mary Beth Wilson Allison

Caves Southwest of McMinnville, Tennessee

I'm interested in locating caves, southwest of McMinnville, Tennessee.

Joshua Winchester Garrett's (1844-1925) second wife "Pollie Sue Garrett" (1868-1942) was given her name by Joshua. She was a Full Blooded Cherokee Indian; she had taken a white man's name of "Mary Patrick". Her parents never took a white man's name, they kept their Cherokee names. Joshua changed Mary's name to "Pollie Sue Garrett" when they married. He called her "Pollie", as he did his first wife.

Mary Patrick's parents and grandparents escaped from the "Trail of Tears" as they were on the route. They were members of the "Paint" clan. They hid out in an area Southwest of McMinnville, Tennessee. They later went along with many other Cherokee to the area of Putnam, Overton, and Clay counties. Many Cherokee knew of this area because of "The Standing Stone" at Monterey, Tennessee.

Her (Mary Patrick's) died when Mary was twelve; she was taken in by a White family in Clay County and raised by them. She took the name "Mary Patrick", and married Joshua Winchester Garrett, in 1888.

I have been trying to locate the original location of "The Standing Stone", in Monterey, Tennessee, to give me an idea of where to look for the caves, they would have hid out in.

Mary Patrick, aka Pollie Sue Garrett, told both my Paternal Grandmother, and Paternal Uncle, about this, so I'm taking it as the "truth" or (factual).

Since she said it was Southwest of the town of McMinnville, Tennessee, that her parents and grandparents hid out (in caves), I'm trying to get an idea of which caves are strong possibilities.

Any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation.

Hello!, Asiya! This is your cousin Fred. I posted the inquiry about John Gee because he married John M and Mourning. If you need my whole computer record, I can send it to you as a GEDCOM file. You will need some genealogy software to open it. I suggest Family Tree Maker.

Love

Cousin Fred

Hi, my name is Asiya Zahl, and I'm a descendant of John M. Potts and Mourning Hughs on my mothers side. My grandmother's maiden name was Bobbie Potts. I have a copy of the full document that you posted, well i guess two years ago. My great uncle and his mother Bessie have compiled a very detailed family tree, some photos and stories. My grandmother was also an Eakin, but I don't have much info on her family. If you have any info on the Eakins that would be great!

There is an old Mill and dam at the old community of Clearmont which is very near the Cannon county line but still in Warren County. The Mill Pond still holds water and the mill itself is still standing. I believe this tributary
of the Barren Fork is called BULLPEN CREEK. There is another old mill on Tic-tac road called Bryans Mill. The dam still stands, but the millhouse is gone. There are parts of the mechanical wheels still lying around. I am not familiar with Strands Mill or Chaffel's Mill. They don't sound like Warren County names.

God Luck
Doug Malone

Evans family of McMinnville

Will do look ups – my mother now deceased published the Evans Family 1700-1983 by Marjorie Stewart Tucker. It is out of print now but copies do exist in some genealogy libraries around the country and occasionally a copy can be found online. It was her greatest wish that her book might benefit others tracing the same lines so I have posted the index and will do look ups for anyone.
My mother, a mathematician, was a meticulous researcher. It is well written and well sourced with many pics and interesting
stories also. I think this index will most benefit those searching in Warren Co, TN but there are many other names in the book too.
*There is a copy in the McMinnville library.
Generation 1 includes John & Isaac Evans from Frederick Co, VA (now in Berkley Co, W. VA)
Generation 2-5 mostly reside in Warren Co, TN., Abraham Evans, John Evans, James Dodson Evans, Nancy Evans Reynolds.
Generation 6 resided in Birmingham, AL for our direct lines.
I am Generation 7.
This is the complete index: http://www.flickr.com/photos/montanapets/sets/72157629818837...
To view, bring up a page, click on “actions”, view all sizes, and use a larger size.
Dianne Watson Armstrong
di@montanapets.org
I am searching for any information available for Silas H Reynolds, born 1806 in North Carolina. He married Nancy Keele in 1832 and resided in Warren county. Later in Coffee County.
He deceased in 1853.
I have been unable to locate his parents, but I conjecture he was the son of Jenkins Reynolds and Peggy Greer, but have no paper trail to connect them. I am hopeful someone can locate a probate for Jenkins who deceased in about 1813 or any other documentation which concerns Jenkins or Silas H Reynolds.
Thanks

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available searchable census at this time.

1940 census has been released but it will take several months before
the transcription is completed.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces +++

You need to supply DOB's + birthplaces for all that are listed in your message.

Just a guess, but I think these might be real close to the Cannon co line. My Orricks lived near there. I read something recently in the McMinnville library or somewhere about a big flood that washed the mills away. I think 1848 or so.

Elisha Duncan was married into my Orricks. They came from KY around 1825 down to Warren Co TN.

Need photo ID of "Mrs. Fite", probably Warren Co, TN

In my mother's things was this pic.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/montanapets/6932663622/in/set-7...
On the back it says "Mrs. Fite, Ma Evans closest friend." Ma Evans would be my GGM,Nancy Jane (Evans) Reynolds (1860-1934) married to Thomas Monroe Reynolds (1851-1920). Nancy is found in the Warren Co census every year except 1900 she and Thomas appear in DeKalb. I found this one findagrave that sure looks like she: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Fi...;
I emailed the person who posted it but he didn't reply. It's interesting that she's an Evans too which intrigues me even more to know if she's also a relative. There's a huge age diff in the two women but the pics look an awful lot alike. Can you ID this person?
Dianne

I remember my mother telling me she had found a little person in our tree. After Mama died, while sorting through pictures, I found the one I remembered seeing as a kid. I love the pic and would love to know who she is. A good part of my mother's research centered around Warren Co. (McMinnville area)although it could be DeKalb but probably Warren. Most likely she could be an Evans (John Evans family), a Reynolds (Thomas Monroe Reynolds family), a Dodson (Talitha Dodson), or a Byars (Nathan Byars) or extended family. I'm told there were three families of little people in McMinnville but I don't live in Tenn. If you can ID this photo, would love to hear from you.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/montanapets/7078739227/in/set-7...
Dianne

This John Vaughan, who was the son of Peter Vaughan was born in Culpepper VA left VA and went to Warren County, TN with his parents. They left Warren County and went to Osage, MO. Where he spent the remainder of his life. He married in Warren County to Nancy Medley. There is a John Vaughan who married Mary Lane, from White County, TN. He was born in 1855 and died during the Civil War and I have not found his final resting place yet. This John, the best I can tell from records and from oral history of the family, was either the son or grandson of the John who went to Osage, MO. My husband is of this line and I would be happy to hear from you.
