John or GT "Gus" Tipton of Unicoi County, Tennessee

My Aunt Mary Jane Smith married (8-23-1902) John Tipton born 11 Oct 1881. John's father was GT Tipton, nicknames (Gus - Gutch). Gus was married twice, once to a Margaret Bowman (Unicoi Co. TN), and believe the other was a Rosey Leach from Tipton Hill, Mitchell, Pigeon Roost or Yancy, North Carolina. Don't know which of these were John Tipton's mother.

John (18) & his father Gutch T Tipton (33) served in the Spanish American War and were found in 1900 US Federal Census as home in 1900 at Balincaguin, Philippine Islands, Military & Naval Forces, both with the rank of Private.
Also, indicated both were born in TN.

Believe Gus T Tipton's parents were Aaron Burleson Tipton (DOB 6 Nov 1851 in NC)& Hester Ann Johnson (DOB 4 Sept 1861 Carter Co. TN) who were married in Unicoi Co. TN (8 Dec 1878).

After marrying John Tipton spent much time in Mountain Home, VA Hospital in Johnson City, TN. Altho, they were living @ 420 Hamilton St. Johnson City, TN. Finally, a builder by the name of Dyer working for Parr brothers of Johnson City, TN build them a new home @ 426 Hamilton St.

Jane was some 20 years older than John and they had no
children. John registered for WW I on 12 Sept 1918. Listed his address as 420 Hamilton St. Johnson City, TN.
Working as painter for M P Dyer located @ Railroad St. and nearest relative, wife.

John (Died 12 Nov 1863) & Mary Jane Smith Tipton (Died 1 Nov 1950), both are buried @ Oak Hill Cemetery, Johnson City Tennessee.

Looking for any information on Gus & John Tipton in around
Erwin, Unicoi Co. TN. & surrounding NC counties.

My husbands ggg grandmother was Sarah A Campbell, she married David Gouge (son of John Wesley Gouge and Rachel Lydia Forbes). No one knows the parents of Sarah A Campbell Gouge but I have found a clue that might help.

In the census of 1920 in Unicoi county TN, Sarah Campbell Gouge is living with her BROTHER David W Campbell, wife Bettie J, their kids, William, Jason, James, Freddie and daughter Marie Campbell. Also living within this household is an Aunt Betsy Davis, age listed as 99 years of age if I have read it right. David W Campbell states he was born in 1864.
I know several people are from David GOUGE and Sarah Campbell, in this census, Sarah Campbell Gouge has a big D in her marriage status, I take that to mean she was divorced from David Gouge. Sarah Campbell Gouge has a daughter, Addie Gouge, with her in her brother David Campbell's household. Does anyone have any info on this line?

Thanks!
Tracy Estepp

Asa Davis

I have found an Asa Davis on the 1900 U.S. Census for Unicoi County, TN. The census states he was born Sept 1831, is 68 years old, and divorced. It shows that Asa was born in TN and his parents were born in Virginia (father), and North Carolina (mother). His occupations shows as Physician.

He is living in the household of David Baker and Wife Marg A. Baker, also living in HH is Jane, Lilly, Frank, and Theodora Bratt step children of David Baker. I believe his status is "uncle". Do the names Baker or Bratt ring a bell with anyone? Neighbors are James and Harriet Gouge.

I believe this to be the Asa Davis who was married to Susannah Whitehead with children of: James, John, Sarah, Biddy, David, Elijah, Hannah, Doc, and Sam.

I am descended from Elijah through his daughter Eva.

He does not show in Unicoi County in 1910 that I can find.
Can anyone verify that this is the correct Asa Davis for this family? Does anyone know the date of death? If this is the correct Asa, I am assuming the death to be between 1900 and 1910.

Thanks,
Jeanie

NARA to INCREASE FEES

I just learned today that National Archives and Records Administration is planning to increase fees in May, 2007. To name a few:

Military service records- from $17 to $25.
Passenger arrival lists- from $17.25 to $25.
Pension document packet- from $14.75 to $25.
Full pension file (non Civil War)- from $37 to $60.
Full Civil War pension file- from $37 to $125. That's right, $125.

NARA will receive comments on the increase from "interested persons" until April 27, 2007. You can comment through the Federal eRulemaking Portal: http://www.regulations.gov , or write to Regulations Comments Desk (NPOL), Room 4100, Policy and Planning Staff, National Archives and Records Administration, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001.

I urge everyone to let NARA know how they feel about this fee increase. Looks like full pension files are the hardest hit - 338% of the current price!!!!!!! If this increase is approved, many researchers will settle for ordering the "pension document packet," which, compared to the full pension file, is not worth a hill of beans. I would suggest to never order the document packet.

To view documents concerning the increase, go to
http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main
Click- documents open for public comment.
agency- select National Archives and Records Admin. - all.
document type- all
keyword - fee.
This should bring up 2 documents. View both. Send NARA your thoughts. Forward this to others.

Dan Slagle
Tennessee Records, what's available at Courthouses???

I live in NC, about 1 1/2 hours from Unicoi County, and I plan to go to the Erwin to do some research. I wanted to know what records can be viewed at the courthouse. I want to look at birth, death, marriage, probate and land records. In NC, all of this is public record. I didn't want to make a trip, if I can't view these records. (In SC, you can't view the birth and death records at their courthouses, so I wanted to ask about the TN records before I visit). Anyone who can help me, I do appreciate it so much!
Thanks, Anita

I am looking for information on Sarah Tipton who was married to Landon C. Haynes Briggs and lived around the Flagpond, Tenn area. I show her in the 1870 census living with a John Hensley age 60 and his wife Mary Cordelia Baily age 23. Sarah is 8 and it shows a sister that is 10 but I cannot make her name out. I also show her in the 1880 census living with Johnny and Polly Farechild. Both Censuses were from the Flagpond area.

Turner families and migrations to NE Tennessee

Through genetic DNA sampling and comparison to an existing Turner database, I have determined that the Turner family that settled in Carter County, TN and in Scott County, VA migrated to those areas from York County, SC. Another genetic clue stated that there was a Solomon Turner in Carter County, TN who presented with recessive trait of blue eyes (noted from his Civil War military record). A recent conversation with another Turner family member in Greene County, TN revealed that there was a high frequency presentation of blue-eyed Turners in Greene County, TN a trait that was much noted in the Turner families there. It is my assumption that the migration from York County, SC seeded both Greene County, TN and Carter County, TN with its Turner families. My query is that I would like to be contacted via email concerning individuals who may be research the Turner family lines and to share research that may link the distant past between the York County, SC establishment of the Turners and what their migration was from the European continent. My contact email address is: genealogyhunt@yahoo.com Thank you very much. Sincerely, Robert T. Turner.

I am looking for a marriage between Frank Delaney Knox, a dentist in Erwin, Tennessee, in 1917 and an unknown bride. According to his WWI draft registration card, the marriage was to take place around June 21, 1917. I'm hoping it was in Erwin and that there is a marriage record. If anyone has a marriage index for Unicoi County and can look this up, I would appreciate it very much.

Does anyone research or live in this area know where the Bill Baker farm was located in Limestone Cove? Bill Baker lived in the area from abt 1820-1865 and is the ancestor of many of the Baker lines in the area today. I descend from this line through Thomas Baker-Nancy Davis, son of Bill Baker. Any help or communication with others studying this line would be appreciated.
Jacque Baker
San Diego, Ca

James Henry Jones-Elizabeth Feathers

I hope someone can help me determine if James Henry Jones and Elizabeth Feathers are part of my line. Does anyone know what became of their sons John Jones, William Jones and James Jones? My ancestor is John Jones who married Mary Pauline Rigsby in Sullivan Co., TN in 1871. They migrated to Fayette Co. about 1875 with the Cross, Feathers group. Mary's father was Aaron Rigsby. His first wife was Hannah__, 2nd wife Laura Feathers, daughter of Jesse Feathers. Jesse was brother to Elizabeth Feathers. Several of Aaron Rigsby's sisters married Cross brothers from Sullivan and Washington Co. On the 1880 census, John Jones is in Fayette, with brother J. Jones, his first name unknown. They soon settled in Tipton Co. I was told that my John Jones may be the son of James Henry and Elizabeth, and this J. Jones is actually James. Can anyone prove or disprove this line of inquiry for me? Thanks, Rita

Barnes, Boon marriage 1878

I am looking for the marriage bond or information on the marriage of Jasper Barnes and Luisa Boon. The bond was applied for in Unicoi County on June 25, 1878 and they were married on July 7, 1878 by A. Harris, J.P. I would like a copy of the bond if any way possible. I would also like to know a little of the area history. Jasper is with his father in the 1870 census in Madison County, NC in the Ivy Post Office district. In 1880 Jasper and Lueasy were in the Madison County census in the Upper Laural District. We were wondering why they would travel to Tn. to post the bond and marry. This information was sent to me by e-mail so I am not sure the dates are right. Thanks for any help and information.
Linda Barnes

Hensley Family - California Creek area of Madison County, NC

I am looking for information on McDaniel "Mack" Hensley (born 1868) and John Wesley Hensley (born 1871). They were the sons of William "Marion" Hensley of the Middle Fork/Upper Laurel area of Madison County.

The brothers married two sisters, possibly with the last name of Hampton/Higgins/or Hamlin. The father of the sisters started a family dispute at a wedding party and one of the sisters was killed. This happened between 1890 and 1900 in the California Creek area of Madison County.

John Wesley was listed on the 1900 census with wife Sally M. On the 1910 census he was listed with wife Laura. This was his second marriage.

Does anyone know what Sally M.'s maiden name was or what happened to her?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Charles Baker (bn 1867), son of Ezekiel and Martha C. (Grindstaff) Baker, married Maggie Keener (bn 1874) July 10,1889 in Unicoi County, Tennessee. Charles and Maggie had many children and lived in Unicoi County until about 1920. Charles Baker is found in Summit County (Akron), Ohio in 1920, and Maggie is found there in 1924. I am searching for Charles and Maggie Baker’s death certificates and where they are buried. Also interested in their descendants; I have info on their ancestors that I would like to share..
