Overall/Bowers Atoka, Tennessee

I am searching for information on my Great Grandmother and her parents. She was Eula Ardeen (Arden?) Bowers, born in Atoka, Tennessee in 1889.

Her Mother was Agnes (might be Virginia-per an old family photo) Bowers. Her Father was Sam (might be James or Charlie per old handwritten memos)Overall.

She had one sister that we know of, although she may be a half sister-Veatrice (not sure of her last name). She was last living in Tennessee in the 1980's or 1990's. I don't remember the date my father went out there. She lived in an old plantation style house, with the highway running through the burial site of the slaves. There was a paper my sister dug up saying Veatrice's mother was Mrs. Blankenship.

Any bits of information would be greatly appreciated.

Family of James Vernon Byrd in TN

My great grandfather was James Vernon Byrd(1883-1949), married to Minnie Collins then Pansie Violet Boswell. His father was Robert Franklin Byrd(1841-1914) who married Sarah O. McMinn. His father was Jesse S Byrd (maybe Jesse R Byrd?)(1811-1861) who married Martha Farmer, and I believe his father was Bryant Byrd(1782-1856) who married Sarah Boswell. They started out in North Carolina and came to Tipton county, Tennessee in the 1800's.

I was told there was Cherokee heritage somewhere in my family, and I'm trying to figure out if it was from the Byrd side. Thanks in advance for any help.

Tipton Census - 1850/1860 - Incomplete

This is to alert some who have had trouble locating Tipton relatives in 1850/1860 Census in Districts 6 and 7. After some study I have concluded there are problems with these censuses in these districts. There are at least 3 if not more families missing on the Regular Schedules for these Districts which should be there. Other family records all document residence plus they are listed as Owners on the Slave Schedules in 1860. Ancestry.com search engine does not locate them elsewhere.

The three known families are Allen Pickard (Will 1861 Tipton) and the two executors he named, J. D. Easley and W. H. Wooten, and W H Wooten was Sheriff of Tipton Co (Goodspeed's History)

Does anyone have a suggestion as to this reason for this anomaly?

Tims Family in Tipton County

My Great-grandfather, James Tims, and Great-grandmother, Elizabeth Wade Davidson were married in Tipton County, TN 22 Dec. 1853 (IGI Record). The census records of 1860 indicate the Tims' Wades, and Davidsons were living in the same general area, if not adjacent farms. I'm trying to establish the relationships between the families. The Gross family comes in because my grandfather, Carroll W. Tims, married a Martha Elizabeth Gross in Tipton County in Abt.1884. I need 1850 census data on the Tims, Wades, and Davidsons and the marriage date of Martha Gross. Any other information will be greatfully accepted.

Wondering if anyone with access to the 1900 Tipton County, TN census could tell me if there is a Rus Owens and Bessie Smith Owens listed. They were married Feb. 22,1891 in Tipton. They would have had atleast 3 children by 1900. The last name could possibly be Owen. Not sure. Thanks for any help.

My ancestor, Rev. S.B.O. Wilson was pastor at Mt. Carmel in the mid 1800s. Some of his family are buried there. I believe a son and maybe two grandchildren are buried there.

The cemetery census is no longer on the county web site. Will someone please lookup the WILSON burials and send to me. There was a copy of the inventory at the Covington Library many years ago.

I have been researching my ancestry from Tipton County over the past several months and have collected quite a bit of information; however, I still have a number of gaps to fill. My great grandparents include: George Washington ADKISON (1862-?) who married Ella TENNANT (?-ca 1900); William Green(field) WATKINS (1874-1932) who married Electra Alice WHITEHORN (1878-1971); Thomas Anderson PINNER (dates unknown) who married Mary Elizabeth ROARK (dates unknown); and James Walter TANNER (1876-1957) who married Ella Jane “Daughter” BOSWELL (1878-1927). If anyone is researching any of these lines and would like to exchange info please e-mail me.

I am looking for my father's father family origins. He married Savannah around 50 years ago, somewhere in Tennessee or Arkansas. They lived in the Shelby/Tipton area. He and Savannah had 7 children, to my knowledge. Chester, my grandfather, who married Pauline Alston. Mineava FOSTER, who married ‘Shorty’ Foster; Floyd married a woman named Doris; Theodi married a woman named Cora; Andrew (unknown if he ever married); Hazelannah Gibb (Hazel Anna), husband’s surname GIBB; and Maella WEBB; husband’s surname James WEBB. No one is sure of my great-grandfather’s name because they were all young when he passed; I get the impression he died young. I am really interested in where he’s from, his parents and so on. It is said he or Savannah both were originally from AK. If it will help Chester and Pauline, with Savannah settled in Brighton, TN, outside of Memphis (Shelby/Tipton County). Their children attended Brighton Elementary, High School and Mumford High School. Your help would be highly appreciated.

(Alternatively, a Bastardy Bond for Samuel Jesse Ellis [b.c1843 TN], her son, would be useful if she was not married.)

Also possibly buried in the county:

James H.
Josiah A. Morrow age 38 in 1850 census Tipton Co Tn

I'm researching Josiah A. Morrow who appears in the 1850 census Tipton Co Tn, dist 4; pg 328b 274/274:
Josiah A. Morrow age 38 born SC, grocer;
wife Mildred 34 Tn; Martha Champion 12; Robert H. Winn 6.

I understand Josiah A. Morrow married the following in Tipton Co Tn:
(1) Sarah E. Wilson 7/8/1847
(2) Mildred N. Champion 9/6/1849
(3) Indiana Deakins 3/25/1852

Josiah and family moved to Lauderdale Co Tn by 1860 census.
He does not appear in 1870 census and wife Indiana had remarried 1866 so apparently Josiah died during the Civil War era.
I suspect Josiah A. Morrow's parents were David and Nancy (Dorrough) Morrow. They lived in Greenville Dist SC until 1826 when they moved to Fayette Co Al where they appeared in 1830 census. I lost track of them including Josiah after that.

Any info would be appreciated.

Bill Morrow of Oklahoma

I have just heard people talking about her on previous message boards.
Her last name can also be known as Delaney, possibly a marriage to Henry Delaney which Earl Franklin Delaney was born in 1897 in Catahoula County, La. She married J.E. Adams in MS in 1904 with Katie Adams being born in 1904, and lastly to William Monroe Maxey who was my great grandfather resulting in lots of children. She died in Shelby county TN in 1960.

My question to you. Was her last name really Crooks, or was it something different. I have really hit a road block.
Any information would be very appreciated!

Mariah Copell (Maxey)
Son of Leander Hill, 1887

North Georgia Times (Murray Co. GA) Thursday, October 20, 1887:

“This horrible story comes from Tennessee: A little son of Leander Hill, who lives south of Covington, [Tipton Co.] Tenn., went to his father’s gin, and seeing that the cotton press was halt full of the fleecy staple, the child lay down and went to sleep. Operations were resumed about the gin and the Negroes filled the press with lint to complete the bale. The terrific pressure of the falling block was brought down upon the loose cotton, and when the bale was rolled up from the press, bound with the iron ties, the life blood of the body oozed slowly through the fiber. This excited the curiosity of the men and the bale was torn open. To the horror and unspeakable grief of Mr. Hill, he found the body of his little son crushed to a jelly. If the little fellow uttered any cries of distress they were not heard.”

I am seeking any information regarding the Somerville, Burns and Hunt families of Mason, Tipton County, Tennessee. I am most interested in the families of Hunt Somerville and his wife Annie Burns. Hunt, son of Richard Bulloch Somerville (Somervile) was born in 1851 and died in 1918. His daughter, Florence D. Somerville married by great great grandfather John William Carrithers of Memphis and they moved to Texas. I am also very interested in learning more regarding the Hunt family. Richard Bulloch Somerville's wife was Elizabeth Taylor Hunt, daughter of Major Thomas Taylor Hunt. Any information regarding the Somerville, Burns or Hunt families would be tremendously appreciated!

I need any information I can find on Samuel Roe and/or his family. From the censuses, I have Samuel married Louisa J.; their children are Mary M., Ann E., Martha T., William Benjamin, and Fanny R. They were in Tipton Co., TN in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses but not in 1850. William B. married Mary W. Boswell in Fayette Co., TN on 5 Nov 1884. They had 6 children (1 died before 1900). In 1900 William B. and Mary W. were in Paragould, Greene Co., AR.

I have looked up every Roe/Rowe/Row in the 1850 census index, but have not been able to find Samuel (probably at home with his father as he was 20 at the time). A search of Tipton Co. in 1850 also came up empty. So they probably came to Tipton Co. during the 1850's.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for the descendants of Judge Samuel E. Stephenson of Covington , Tipton Co., Tennessee in the hope of exchanging photographs. Judge Stephenson, widower, was married to my gg-aunt Annie Barnett Chapman, the daughter of John H. and Damaris L. Shelton Chapman.

The following were in the household in 1900:
Samuel E. Stephenson b. Sept., 1846 in South Carolina lawyer
Annie Barnett Chapman Stephenson b. May, 1864 in Tennessee
Samuel E. Stephenson jr b. December, 1880 Tennessee son
Efford Stephenson b. August, 1882 Tennessee son
Nancy Cotton b October 1869 TN cook
Sallie Cotton b. April 1892 TN
??? Cotton b. March 1897 TN

My gg grandmother , Damaris L. Shelton Chapman, Annie Barnett Chapman Stephenson and my g-grandfather , Richard Thomas "Tom" Chapman , resided in Covington after 1872. Damaris Shelton Chapman and the Stephensons are buried in Munford Cemetery, Tipton County, TN. Richard Chapman is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY

Prior to moving to Covington in about 1872, the Chapmans lived in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, TN,where Damaris Chapman taught music in a private boarding school and her husband John H. Chapman made furniture. Other residences moving backwards in years were Monticello, Drew Co., Arkansas ( resided with Joseph and Nancy Gillespie Shelton) , and Huntsville, Yadkin County, North Carolina , the home of John H. Chapman. Damaris L. Shelton was born in 1825 in Stokes County, North Carolina, the daughter of Richard Shelton and Frances/ Fanny Jones Barnett.

I have a few photos of Annie Stephenson and Judge Stephenson. I would appreciate contact with Judge Stephenson's descendants who might have a photo of my gg-grandmother and other siblings of Annie Barnett Chapman Stephenson who died before moving to Tipton County or other Sheltons as there were Shelton siblings of Damaris Shelton Chapman and their children living in Covington over the years.

Richard Thomas Chapman left Covington and worked for Carter Dry Goods in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. From about 1958 until the early 1970's my grandmother, Hattie Lee Chapman Conover, was a resident of Covington and lived in a home on Maple.

Thank you.

Marie Reedy
rreedy@mics.net
rreedy3@woh.rr.com
Fairborn, Ohio

I am still trying to find info on Benjamin VanVickle that was in the 1910 Tipton Co., census.

I am told Mary died in Tipton Co. between this 1910 census and 1920 census.

I am trying to find Mary parents. According to the census Mary was born Nov. 1871 Alabama.

I have found a Vaden Family of John and Mary Safronia (Safrona), Unknown, Vaden in Franklin and Cobert Co. Alabama, in the 1860-1870 census. Mary Safronia and children were in Lauderdale Co., Tennessee in 1880. John apparently had died. Daugther Mary was in the household.

By 1900 Mary Safronia was living with Thomas J. Vaden, as his cousin.

I am not able to find any proof this John and Mary Safronia was my Mary's parents.

Any info would sure be appreciated.

Thank you, Cathy
