Hi Folks, well the summer heat still continues but I managed to get 6 cemeteries completed in the month of August in lieu of the fact that my doctor put me the hospital for a day. (nothing major, just an oil change)

I had only planned on getting 3 done but managed what I call three freebies, one that I accidentally drove past and two others my friend took me out to see. I already have my list for September and hope the weather will turn to Fall soon so I don't die from heat exhaustion.

So here is the list:

Sherron Cemetery, Portland, TN
Corinth Cemetery, Portland, TN
Bush's Chapel Cemetery, Gallatin, TN
Hullett Cemetery, Gallatin, TN
Austin Cemetery, Gallatin, TN
Preuett Cemetery, Gallatin, TN

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~chpp/index...

Looking for any information, or descendants, of the following Sumner Co. TN African American family.

Abe (Abraham) MAYBERRY, 1863 – 1939, and Sarah COLEMAN, 1871 – aft 1930.
They married 1888 in Sumner Co. TN and lived there the rest of their lives.

Census records show that they had the following daughters:
Mattie P. born June 1890
Carrie born Aug 1892
Eva born Oct 1893
Katie/Catherine born Aug 1897
Florida born 1902, died 1918

Their daughter Eva Mayberry married William Kenneth Wilson.
Eva Mayberry Wilson was the 1st African American in Sumner to become a registered nurse. She was also a teacher and taught at Rockland School and Avondale School in Hendersonville.
William Kenneth Wilson owned the Gallatin Drug Store and was a pharmacist.

The reason I am looking for the descendants of Abe Mayberry is that my great grandfather, Rev. John Louis Hill, also a Sumner Co. native, was the author of several books. One of those books, published in 1930, was dedicated to his friend Abe Mayberry. I would like to give Abe Mayberry’s descendants a copy of this book.

Please contact me at jak.ish@verizon.net
Kathleen Hill
Redondo Beach, CA

Hi everyone, I hope you are well and that July was a good month to you.

Between working 7 days a week and it being so hot, it was a VERY slow month for my cemetery project. I only got 2 cemeteries completed

King Cemetery, Gallatin Tn
Old Fountain Head Cemetery, Portland TN

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~chpp/index...

The only funny story was when I doing Old Fountain Head, it was VERY hot even at 8:30am in the morning thus I stopped many times to rest and drink water. I was standing under a tree cooling off and I kept hearing this buzzing sound but besides the heagnatsts I saw no bees or anything. I looked up and way up in the tree was the biggest hornet nest. Now I got out from that tree lickty split but they never bothered me if they had some of the neighbors would have seen me running down the road, screamin and cussing like a sailor..lol

Take care and hopefully August will be more productive. I have started Sherron Cemetery in Portland, TN but only have half of completed (its not uploaded)

CHPP

Smothers in Middle Tennessee

Researching the SMOTHERS families out of Orange Co., North Carolina, that settled and lived in middle Tennessee circa 1795-1880. Most settled near the Kentucky line (Walker's line) in what was then eastern Sumner Co. and western Smith Co., TN, and is now western Macon Co., TN. They lived along or near the Ridge, Goose Creek, Trammel Creek, etc., near present day Eulia and Siloam in western Macon County. Families living in that area circa 1800-1850 include those William and Nancy Smothers, James and Margaret (Summers) Smothers, Edmond and Catherine Smothers, Eli and Margaret (Pyles) Smothers, Elihu and Mary (Jacob) Smothers, Hiram and Sally (Rhodes) Smothers, and John and Elizabeth (Davis) Smothers, to name a few. Their Smothers sons/daughters/brothers/sisters are known to have married in Sumner County into the following lines : ANGLEA, BARBER, COOK, DAVIS, FAGG, HAMMACK, HATCHETT, HUNT, JACOBS, LINDSEY, POWELL, PYLES, RUMLEY, SMOTHERS, STINSON, SUMMERS, VAUGHN, WIGGINGTON, and WHITE. By 1855, most of these SMOTHERS families moved on to other parts of Tennesse (Carroll County for example) and/or to southern Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas

Monthly Additions/JUNE---Sumner County, TN CHPP 07

Hi Folks, well it was a busy month, here are the cemeteries completed this June. I hope you are having a good summer so far. I thought I would be invaded by cicada's this summer but Sumner County was spared a major infestation

Carr Cemetery
Miers Cemetery
Cuffman Cemetery
Corum Hill Baptist Church Cemetery
Dry Fork Cumb Pres Church Cemetery
Franklin Chapel Cemetery
Mt Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery
Terrell Cemetery
Old Cedar Grove Cemetery
Mt Zion Kansas Cemetery
Mt Moriah Church Cemetery

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~chpp/index...

I also have completed Old Beech, all the pictures have been taken and as of this email up to the letter O has been uploaded and the rest will be done by the end of the weekend. Please see the main Beech page for an interesting story about the Little Gypsy Girl marker I came across and her story

In doing Miers cemetery which is in the deep woods of Dobbins Pike, my daughter and I were covered in ticks so I have decided that if a cemetery is really covered in brush and in the woods then I will make note of the address and go back this winter to take pictures

I did locate the KIZER cemetery off Center Point Road, it is on private property but its covered and in the woods so I will head back this winter to take pictures.

I hope you have a great 4th of July and i look forward to getting more cemeteries done this July

CHPP

I am researching a Francis M. Suttle born on 10-21-1848. Later in life he lived around Fountain Head (Portland), Sumner County, Tennessee. I am not sure if he lived there all his life or just later on. He died in this area on 10-4-1937 and is buried in Old Brush Cemetery in Portland. He was married to a Nellie Kirkman\Kirkham on 9-13-1868. She was born on 11-20-1846 and died on 7-23-1925. She is buried next to him. They share the same head stone. I have these people listed as their children but am unsure if they are; Fanny B:5-17-1870 D:9-24-1925, William Thomas B:5-23-1873 D:11-14-1953, Molley B:?? D:??, Lillie B:?? d:??, Bertha B:?? d:??, and Charles B:6-29-1882 D:7-1-1977. I would appreciate any info regarding his parents, him, his kids or his wife. I am wondering if some how they are part of Presley Suttle's line. I don't think so but may be wrong. Any help is much appreciated.

Dale

I am looking for information about Lee H ALLEY, the Sumner Co. Clerk 1868-1870. I can find no references to him anywhere other than in documents to which he affixed his name in the capacity of Clerk.

I suspect that he may be Lee H. ALLEY Jr, born in NC and living in Putnam Co, Indiana until he enlisted in the military at the start of the Civil War. He mustered out in 1864 in Nashville, TN, and I have no definite trace of him until the 1870 census - in Washington DC. He died there in 1875.

If anyone has any information about the Lee H ALLEY who served as the Clerk of Sumner Co, TN, please post here or email me at crcottre@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
-Rick Cottrell
Indianapolis, Indiana

What was the correct name of Much, Munchie? In 1930, Much & Mable were in Indianapolis with Mable's daughter Stella Brown & family. The Brizendines had moved there also.
Hello,
I am looking for information on a "Mr. Bowd" who worked as a preacher in the early 1870s and was from Gallatin, Tennessee. I am currently editing a collection of letters from Columbus, Mississippi, and the correspondent notes that "Mr. Bowd" was a trial preacher for the Presbyterian church in Columbus - from the records, it appears as if he was not appointed to the position, or decided not to accept the position.

I would be delighted to share my information, and any help would be much appreciated.

I'm searching my family geneology and am at a loss. I'm
searching a John Ross born December 10, 1799, in Rockingham, NC. Mary
"Polly" Bandy was born ? in Sumner County, TN. John and Mary were
married December 8, 1818, in Sumner County. Who do I contact to see if
I can get a copy of their marriage and to find out the names of Mary's
parents and siblings. John and Mary moved on to Illinois. They had a
daughter born November 11, 1829, in Morgan County, IL; thus, I'm not
sure how long they stayed in Sumner County. Any suggestions, contacts,
or leads would be greatly appreciated. I live in Colorado and have no
idea which courthouse or records to seek. Don Gabriel
Seeking information on Malinda Latimer Harrison

My ggg grandmother was Malinda Latimer, born 1813 in TN,and lived in Sumner County at least most of her life. Many family trees that I have seen online have her father as Wetherall Latimer out of New London CT. I am not sure about this however because 1.) in the 1880 census she lists her parents' birthplace as NC, not CT (though this could be a mistake by the census taker) and 2.) there is no Wetherall Latimer listed as living in TN on the 1810 or 1820 census.

There are four Latimers living in the Sumner County area in 1820 who have a white female living with them who is the right age to be Malinda. They are Daniel, Erastus, George S, and Nicholas.

The other thing is that Wetherall was born in 1757, so he would have been more the age to be Malinda's grandfather than her father, it seems to me.

I am pretty sure she is one of the descendants of Jonathan Latimer who arrived in 1790 from CT, but it would be great to figure out exactly how she is related to him. Also, does anyone know when she died or where she might be buried? Thanks. Kelly

About 1767, Duncan Ferguson, Master brought by the ship, Earl of Denegal, passengers from Ireland who swore to be protestants to South Carolina. Among these passengers were William Marshall and wife Elizabeth with children Robert, Jannet, and Mary. Also listed with this family was Jane possibly a sister instead of a child. I believe the son Robert born ca 1754 at some time ( ca 1774) married Christianna Moore and moved to Sumner County, TN before or by 1800. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. Also looking for other serious researchers working this line or the Moore line of Christianna.

I am seeking others who are researching William (b. 1849) and Rebecca J. (b. 1844)Roberson/Robertson in Sumner County, TN. Rebecca and William married in Sumner county in 1880. William was widowed and I am *assuming* Rebecca was too. Rebecca was a Chambers and she is my direct line. Her and William had one- possibly two- children together. In 1910 their daughter, listed as Linny, is 21, divorced and has a 2 y/o named William. I have been told her real name was Mattie, though I have no proof. If ANYONE is researching this Roberson/Robertson line and can give me any info about Rebecca or Linny, I would be so grateful. Thanks to others sharing with me, I have pictures of both ladies as well as many descendants of Rebecca through the Chambers name. Please, if you have any info I would love to talk with you! Thanks!

John DAWSON resided in Sumner Co. 1790 - 1805

I'm trying to find any connections at all for a John DAWSON who lived in Sumner Co. Where did he come from? Where did he go? Various county records show he lived in Sumner Co. during the period of 1790 to 1805. No mention is made of a wife or children.

John owned 1454 acres of land near Gallatin (on the East Fork of Station Camp Creek). I haven't found any record of him acquiring it or parting with it, but I did find that he sold land in Williamson Co., TN in 1805. This is the last record I have of him.

Oddly enough, my own ancestor named John DAWSON (born 1775 VA, too young to be the same man) lived in Williamson Co., TN during the 1800's to 1820's. I have been unable to find who his parents were. Perhaps there is some connection between them. My John's "next door" neighbor was named Haden TILMAN and he came from Sumner Co. Coincidence?

Specifically, I'd like to find tax records for John from 1795-1805 (later if he was still there), and any land records involving the DAWSONs.
I haven't poked around in here in a while, are there any Caldwells out there? I have spoken with Durham and Freddy but I am looking for some Caldwells still in Westmoreland. I am down there often and visit the gravesites often but would like to get in touch with those above ground. I have some information on my line of Caldwells if interested?

Also, David Caldwell married a Malinda Davis around 1830. I know most of her family were in the same unit as many of the Caldwells in both the Seminole Wars and the Civil War. Any information on the Davis family of Westmoreland would be great as well.

In 1812, the area that is now middle TN was then know as west TN. Any information on this ROSS family will be greatly appreciated.

Please someone help shed some light for me.

I am trying to define the relationships between these people:
Nancy, Arsenath, Silas Polk, Hiram Mitchell, Solomon Mitchell, Wiley Mitchell, Risdon D. Moore... all of these people appear together or near eachother over and over again, but I have had trouble pinning down the relationship of these other people to HIRAM MITCHELL.
Desparate search.
Arbie Augusta Lane
married Richard D. Hobdy (Nashville marriage bond) 9 Sep 1888.
Boy birth record Nashville 29 Nov 1889.
Girl, Beuna Myrtle, born 1892, but don't know where.
Girl, Dohna, born 1893.
Death notice says girls were 3 and 1 1/2, no boy child (and they never knew), and though faded, believe she was buried in Parham Cemetery. Several indications she was Catholic.
We have always been told that Arbie's parents went to Texas just before the big 1900 storm and were never heard from again, but we don't know their names. We heard from one relative that she had a brother name William and sister named Bessie.
This equates to all we know. If anyone in the Lane line had someone to disappear in the Texas 1900 storm, please reply! Can not find her in the 1880 census ANYWHERE!
