BOOHER IN SULLIVAN CO., TN

My ggrandmother was Sarah Catherine BOOHER (1848-1923) who married Hiram MABREY/MAYBERRY in 1872 in Clay Co., TN. I am trying to find proof that she was the grandaughter of Martin BOOHER, Jr. of Sullivan Co., TN.

In Martin BOOHER, Jr.'s Will, June 9, 1866, Proven March 2, 1868, Sullivan Co., TN, he cuts seven of his children off with only $1.00. Once of these children was a C.J. BOOHER.

I believe C.J. BOOHER was Christopher J. who migrated to Overton Co., TN by 1850 and was the father of my ggrandmother, Sarah Catherine BOOHER but I can find no proof of this. Can anyone help me please? If so, please e-mail me direct at bmoss@twlakes.net

I have collected quite a lot of BOOHER information and would be more than happy to share.

Barbara Moss

Barbara Booher - George Hughes - John Poe - Sullivan County TN

Does anyone have information regarding Martin Booher's daughter Barbara, she is mentioned in his will dated 1724 and the dispute filed by the heirs. In the dispute she is listed as the wife of George Hughes. The will states that she may have also been married to a John Poe.

"13th: I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Babara, her and her heirs forever, twelve hundred forty eight dollars, provided she dont never take up with John Poe; if she ever takes up with him again, it is my desire for her to have one dollar, and no more, to be paid one half two years after my death, and the balance in four years."

I am researching her daughter Catherine and there seems to be some confusion with regards to her father, some trees list her as Catherine Poe while others use Hughes. Daughter Catherine married Christian Christopher Elkins and they had a son George Hugh Elkins. I would like to clear up George Hugh Elkins ancestry. Any help would be great.
I'm looking for information on my wife's gg-Grandfather John Thomas Barnes.

John was born March 24, 1838 in Virginia, possibly Washington County. He married Mary S. Zimmerman of Washington County VA about 1866. He shows us in some Sullivan County histories as possibly the editor of a failed newspaper that established about 1880 and ran for a year maybe. He shows up with his wife Mary in the 1900 census in Bristol. He died Nov 1, 1905 and is buried in Bristol City Cemetery.

We're planning on visiting Bristol in August (2008) and to check the cemetery as well as the Washington County Historical Society in Abingdon.

He's been something of a brick wall for finding his parents. Any suggestions or help that can be offered?

I just located the tombstones for Wm. Carroll (1802-1862)and wife, Matilda Carroll (1819-1867). There are seven graves marked by field stones. This small cemetery is actually in someone's backyard, so it's not easily accessible. I have photos of the stones if anyone's interested.

Hi all. I'm Nikki, 23, in Northern VA. I'm new to this, and I don't have a lot of information about my family on either side, nor do I have the family left alive to contact for the information. I used to live in Sullivan Co. so I figured this was the best area to start my post about getting help. Anyways...
If anybody may have any information on the Burgess family, the Kimberlin family, Duke family, or Carney family names, please let me know. I'm really trying to figure out where I came from, so any little bits of information would help a lot. Thanks!

Jacob & Elizabeth Thomas / Stephen Glover & Susan Thomas

I know there are many people out there trying to figure out how, if at all, Stephen Glover is related to the rest of the early Glover families in Sullivan County.

Stephen Glover and Susan Thomas were married in 1829 and show up on the 1837 Tax List and the 1840 Census for Sullivan County. Sometime between 1840 and 1850, they moved to Carter County.

After researching the deeds for both Sullivan and Carter County, I've been able to find only one deed involving Stephen Glover.

An 1855 transaction in Sullivan County shows Stephen and Susan Glover "formerly Susan Thomas" sold approximately 70 acres where "Elizabeth Thomas now resides". The land adjoins the property of William Bushong (to whom Stephen and Susan sold the land) and James Beelar. The deed states that the land's "boundaries of which are more particularly refered to in a deed of conveyance made by John Thomas, for himself and other heirs of Jacob Thomas, Sr. deceased to Jacob Thomas Jr. deceased".

This seems to confirm that Susan's maiden name was Thomas and that Jacob Thomas Jr. and Elizabeth were her parents.

I hope this information helps someone solve the Stephen Glover mystery.

Crawfords of Sullivan Co.

It appears that many of the Crawfords of Sullivan (and surrounding counties) descend from the John Crawford who received a land grant in the area in late 1700s and who had deed activity in and around Horse Creek and Walkers Fork area near Kingsport and Bays Mountain. This John Crawford does NOT seem to be John Montgomery Crawford of Washington county and does NOT seem to be the revolutionary soldier John Crawford who fathered William Ayers Crawford. NOR is he the John Crawford of Greene county who married a Wheeler.

So, is there anyone who has any clues as to who this John Crawford was and where he came from (Virginia I believe) or who he was related to in early 1800 Sullivan county?

I have lots of Crawford info, but haven't been able to identify this John Crawford for sure. Any clue would be great and I'll be happy to share Crawford info.

Susan Crawford

Mary Jane Minga and William E Barnes -ATTN DONNA CRUISE

I want to make contact with Donna Cruise who posted a query on the boards regarding her 2nd great grandparents William E. Barnes and Mary Jane Minga back in 2002.

William and Mary had a daughter Lola that married James V. Loudy who lived & died in Sullivan County. They also had a son John F Barnes, and another daughter Julia who married Joseph Bowman Garst.

I have in my possession copies of bible records for this family. I think it may have been Lola's bible. A friend of mine has the bible and is willing to place it back in the families hands. He purchased it at an estate sale several years ago. There are also a few pictures, obits and something that someone prepared in color of the birth records for Mary JANE and her brother James M. It shows the spelling of MINGE. Mary Jane is the daughter of Miller Barnes and Mary Elizabeth Roller. She is on the 1860 Sullivan Co census with her parents.

Miller has his mother living with him in the 1880 census of Sullivan Co dist 18 listed as MINGE. Her name was Catharine born about 1805 in Virginia.

I found Catherine age 46 born VA in 1850 in Sullivan Co living with a PETER MINGA age 76 born in Pennsylvania and a child James age 16.

If anyone can put me in contact with Donna, please have her contact me.

I am not related to this family, just want to put this bible and it's contents back in the direct line descendants hands.

Carolyn Whitaker
Johnson City, Tennessee
atsissie@aol.com
Hi,
My name is Gerald Jones. I live in Ramsey, Illinois. I am doing research on the family of Benjamin Jones who settled in Fayette Co, Illinois in 1821.
In the 1812 tax list there is listed a Benjamin Jones in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Does anyone have any information on a Benjamin Jones and family? By 1810 Benjamin should have had one son born in 1804. His name is Bowling Jones. Another son was born in 1811. Both sons were born in Tennessee.
Sometime before 1818 the Jones Family moved to Washington County, Illinois.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks
Gerald Jones in Illinois
