John Thomas Barnes, Mary Zimmerman Barnes and Family

I'm looking for information on my wife's gg-Grandfather John Thomas Barnes.
John was born March 24, 1838 in Virginia, possibly Washington County. He married Mary S. Zimmerman of Washington County VA about 1866. He shows us in some Sullivan County histories as possibly the editor of a failed newspaper that established about 1880 and ran for a year maybe. He shows up with his wife Mary in the 1900 census in Bristol. He died Nov 1, 1905 and is buried in Bristol City Cemetery.
We're planning on visiting Bristol in August (2008) and to check the cemetery as well as the Washington County Historical Society in Abingdon.
He's been something of a brick wall for finding his parents. Any suggestions or help that can be offered?
