Davidsons in Smith Co., VA by about 1810

If anyone has access to the deed books for Smith Co., TN, I would really appreciate it if someone would look to see if they can find a deed where a John Davidson (or any Davidson) obtained land there around 1810-1811 and/or sold land there before 1820. There was a pair of John Davidsons (probably father and son, per my research) who appeared on the 1820 Wilson Co., TN census, and they MAY have moved to Wilson from "next-door" Smith Co., TN.

A "family history" states that a Micajah C. Davidson moved at the age of two with his parents from Buckingham Co., VA to Smith Co., TN around 1810. I believe that Micajah's father was probably one of the two John Davidsons who were in Wilson Co., TN in 1820. I also suspect that the Josiah Davidson who was on the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Smith Co., TN was Micajah's brother or cousin. Note: The 1830 Smith Co., TN census seems to have incorrectly shown "Josiah" Davidson as "Joshua" Davidson, but his name was recorded correctly on the 1840 census. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided on the above request.

Campbell Smith of South Pittsburg, Tennessee

Am seeking info on Campbell Smith of South Pittsburg, Tennessee. I know only his name. Cannot locate him on census records. His wife's name was Etta Bridgeman. The children that I know of was my grandfather, William Luther Smith, brothers were Walter Smith, John Smith and apparently the youngest brother, Charlie Smith. There may have been other children. My grandfather was born in 1888 so I would guess-timate that Campbell was born around 1860-1870. I never knew Campbell, only my great grandmother, Etta, who lived (when I was a child) in Daisy, Tennessee across the street from a railroad track that was very busy. Her house was on a corner. I remember the "Daisy" sign being very near her house. Would appreciate any help.

George Percy and Sina Apple

Hello.

I am trying to find information on George Percy and Sina Apple. Percy and Sina were married 3 Oct 1883 in Smith County. Sina's maiden name is listed as Apple.

I believe that George is the son of John and Amanda Apple of Smith County, he was born Oct 1859 according to the 1900 Census. He went by the name of George and Percy (Pursey).

I am not able to find his wife's family. On the same census her DOB is June 1867. We have found a Sina on the 1880 census, but she is living with Nancy Elrod. Her age is a couple years off from what we have and she is listed as a 3rd cousin. They also do not have another last name listed for her, only Elrod.

I am also thinking George and Sina passed away sometime between 1900-1910. Their children and their place of residence in 1910 are below.

Annie Mae (b. Jan 1885) married to Ezekiel Apple 23 Sept 1903
Oscar (b. Feb 1891) living with Oliver brother and Della Apple; listed as a nephew - Oliver is George's Brother
Hargia (b. May 1893) unknown
Verley/Verla (b. Nov 1895) living with John H. and Mary Apple (John H. is Jackson Apple's son) and listed as a cousin
Minnie Apple (b. Sept 1898) - living with Minnie (Apple) and Dan McDonald; listed as a niece - Minnie is George's sister

Hope that all makes sense! I would appreciate any assistance!

Thanks in advance
Naomi Troutz

Elrod families of Smith Co., TN; Bailey Co., TX; and Bryan Co., OK.

I am searching for information on the Elrod families of Smith Co., TN; Bailey Co., TX; and Bryan Co., OK.

This is not my line; however, I want to do something for a very kind man, Roy Holland Elrod, who is the widower of a distant cousin. Roy's wife was Malda Scheihagen (Chandler) Elrod. To the extent that I can "quickly" put together a family history for him, I'd like to do so relatively soon.

The thumbnail of his ancestry is that he descends from:
1. Ephriam and Nancy Ann (McDonald) Elrod
2. William E. and Mary Catherine "Kit" (Heard) Elrod
3. William Trousdale and Cordelia (Holland) Elrod
4. Roy Holland and Nina (Wallace) Elrod
5. Roy Jr. m. Malda ... they had no children.

Roy is 89 and would very much like to make contact with some of the descendants of his aunts/uncles, etc.

William Trousdale Elrod's children were:
1. Jesse Lee Elrod b. Bonham, TX d. San Angelo, TX
2. Roy himself b. Muleshoe, Bailey Co., TX
3. Helen Elrod b. OK
4. Carl Curtis Elrod b. OK d. San Angelo, TX
5. Novilla Elrod b. OK
6. Thomas J Elrod b. OK
7. William H Elrod b. OK

William Trousdale Elrod and Cordelia (Holland) Elrod both died in Texas. William Trousdale Elrod was born in Smith Co., TN. He may have married Cordelia in Smith Co., TN?

What I have above is about all I know at present.

If you descend from one of the above people, please contact me at:
mcowan @ erols.com

Many thanks.

C. J. Owens b. 1810 Smith Co., TN - parents?

C. J. Owens was born in Smith County Tennessee in 1810. He died in the Civil War in 1862 and is buried at the National Cemetery in Knoxville. He fought on the Union Side along with his son, Boston. He is my ancestor, but I can't seem to find his parents. I believe his Dad was Samuel Owens since he was the only Owens in the 1810 Census of Tennessee. Can anyone help me validate the ancestors of C. J. Owens? C. J. married Nancy Ivey and one of their children, Isaiah was my great grandfather. He married Mary Jane Welch and they had 17 children. One of Isaiah and Mary Jane's children was Issac David who was a twin with Jacob Campbell. Issac was my grandfather. Issac married Mary Elizabeth Orick and their oldest son (one of ten) was my Dad...Orbin Clinton.

Any ideas on how to narrow down the field of ancestors. I think Samuel Swan Owens, Sr. was C. J.'s Dad, and I think William Owens was C. J.'s grandfather and Joseph was his great grandfather. Now, how do I go about proving all this?

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Carol J. Owens

Am hoping to make connection with any descendants of Wiley and Anthony Stewart - who I assume were brothers. Both were listed in the Federal censuses of 1850 and 1860 as being Free Men of Color. They resided in Smith County before and after the Civil War. The last time they appeared in a census was in Smith County with their families in 1880.

Lacking any living descendants, I would still very much appreciate knowing when and where these men died. My chief interest in the two lies in their military service during the Civil War.

I have a Mathew Harper (s/o Robert and Pheby) born 1766 in NC, married to Patsy (no surname).
I know they had two sons: Mathew Harper b. 1782 NC, and Lincoln Harper (no birth date).
I've also found where they may have had the following children: Lucretia b. 1798 Smith Co., TN (married Jenks Kemp), Elizabeth b. 6-24-1803 Smith Co., TN (married Jesse West), Betsy Rutha b. 1806 Smith Co., TN (married William M.

I am looking for information on Thomas Hickman BAKER, born 12/22/1800 possibly in Smith County, Tennessee. I have reason to believe that he is the son of Robert BAKER, born 1/17/1754 in Washington County, Virgina. Robert BAKER moved to Smith County, Tennessee about 1800 from what is now Perry County, Kentucky. Robert Baker and his family moved to Callaway County, Missouri about 1817/1818. Thomas Hickman BAKER was on the Callaway County Tax Roll in 1823. Thomas Hickman BAKER and his wife, Mary Polly LITTLE had a son, James Marion BAKER, born 12/4/1825 in Callaway County. Other children were Alice, Rebecca, Jacob, John, Robert, George, and Mary.

Any information at all on any of these people will be greatly appreciated.

Haines/Haynes and McHood link in Smith County?
I have severe brick wall in Smith County. Hopefully someone more knowlegable can offer me some advice on it.

I have a Isabell Haynes/Haines born abt 1843, somehow she became part of the McHood family between 1850 and 1854.

This is how I come to this conclusion:

I have her listed in Smith County 1854 Probate records receiving money as Isabell Haynes from Samuel McHood regarding Robert McHoods estate.

In 1930, on her widowed husbands death certificate the family informant gave her name as "Elizabeth Haines" but many years later in 1943, her daughter gave her mothers name on her SS application as "Isabel McHood".

So I'm at a loss as to whether she's a Haines or a McHood, or both! I've never seen her listed as a child of Samuel McHood... but in 1880 she has the widow Margaret McHood in her home listed as "GMother". So I have to wonder if Robert McHood had other children.

I've been unable to find any trace of her before 1854. Argh!
If anyone know of any info that might help me out, please feel free to share!

Haynes, Haines, Hanes families Smith Co.

I hit a brick wall on my great great grandparents' ancestors about 3 years ago. Is there anyone who knows anything about Charles Haynes (Hanes on 1850 census) who married Margaret (called Peggy) Helmantaller in Jan. 1850, Smith Co., TN? Their first son was named David, their first child was named Mary. Based on this, I believe Charles Haynes's father possibly could have been David Haynes who was in Smith County in the first half of the 1800s. Margaret was supposedly Indian but the name Helmantaller is German, so maybe her mother was Indian. Her mother was supposedly a Pue or Pew. Charles and Margaret had at least 12 children: Mary, David, Amanda, John, Thomas, Hettie Ann, Harriett Elizabeth, Tennie, George, James, Mary, and Sarah. Charles and Margaret both died in about 1878. The children married into the families of Webb, Hunt, Carpenter, Gill, Agee, Wade, Preston, Roberts, and Smith. Any help, clue, or hint of information would be more than appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

The 1880 census mortality schedule for Smith County (Civil District 17) states that one Pendleton Hobson died in May 1880 at the age of 62. He was reported as single, born in Virginia to parents both born in VA. The notation states that he was from family number 99.

Family 99 in CD17 was the family of George Flippen and wife Parthene. Goodspeed's biographical info on the Smith County GenWeb site identifies George C. Flippin as a son of Abner A. and Eliza HOBSON Flippin, and states that his wife was Parthenia Heelmantoller.

Looking for any record of Pendleton before 1880. I cannot seem to find him in any census either as Hobson or Hopson, or as Pen* or P or Edm?nd.

Any mention of him in Smith County records?

Hello. I'm researching McCormick/McCormack family from Smith Co TN. Some names and dates:

Chaffin McCormick/McCormack b. abt 1805 m. Mahaley ? He was born in Va. His family may have come to Smoith Co between 1810 and 1820. They show in census records as being in the northern par of the county. A deed mentions Buffalo Creek.
Daniel McCormick/McCormack b. 1832 m. Mary Carter, who I believe is the dau. of Mathew and Milly Carter.
Simon McCormack, possibly brother of Chaffin

James McCormack, possibly father of Chaffin and Simon. There was another James McCormack but I don't know if they are related.

Thanks for any clues.

Bob McCormick
I am searching for Anne (Ana) Henson b. 1775 in NC and by 1820 lived in Jackson County, TN. She had 2 sons (possibly more children as she was 45 years old in 1820), one of which was Thomas H. Henson b. 1801. They are there in 1820, 1840 and 1850. I do not know who Anne Henson was married to. Anne Henson shows up living with the Thomas and Emily Henson family in 1850 in Jackson County, TN, but they are all gone by 1860.

In 1830, Thomas, Anne and a William Henson are living in Monroe County, KY. But, by 1840 are back in Jackson County, TN.

Does this ring a bell with anyone else's Henson line?
Charles was the son of Alexander "Dock" SMITH and Sarah Catherine WRIGHT. Sarah was the daughter of Hubbard and Mary WRIGHT. They were all from Smith and Macon County TN areas. I am at a brick wall, would appreciate any info anyone here can find me. I was led here through the SMITH surname board where I received lots of help and tips. Sarah Catherine WRIGHT was born abt March of 1823 and died 31 December 1901. After leaving the Smith/Macon area this family relocated to Wayne County, Missouri where my grandmother Dorthula Dalue SMITH married my grandfather William Franklin EADS. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Gwen

I believe that the William Herod Sr, Peter Herod, and Levi Herod in the 1820 census of Smith County are related to the James Harrod/Herrod/Herod who was one of the original settlers in middle Tennessee with the Robertson party that established Nashboro in 1779-80. James was killed by Indians by 1783 and his presumed daughter Nancy is my ancestor. William, like James was reported to have been born in Stafford County, VA, so he may have been a brother. He and James had both lived in the Watauga Settlement area (Washington County, NC) of eastern TN. If anyone has information about this family, I'd be interested to hear.

William Marshall

I am doing family research on William Marshall. I believe he was born in VA around 1765-1770 and moved on to the Rutherford Co.,NC area around 1785. Then he moved on to the Jackson Co./Overton Co. TN area around 1800. He lived there until around 1830. Also living in this area and in Monroe Co., KY area were a Benjamin Marshall and a David Marshall. Around 1830 William Marshall and several of his children (George N.,John, Elisha, Jordan, David, James, possibly William and Thomas, and Catherine Marshall Marrett) moved to the Cass Co., Mason Co., and Sangamon Valley area of IL. William is said to have died in Cass Co., IL at a great age (possibly in 1856 or 1857). I know very little about my ggg grandfather and I would love to find out who his parents were, who his wife or wives were, and if indeed he was related to Benjamin and David Marshall. If you have any information about these Marshalls please contact me.

hi,
looking for anything on Lizzie Smith, born about 1892 or 1895, married Frank Carroll. She was part Cherokee, maybe half.
children: James "Jimmy" Carroll,
Noma Lee "Ruby"
Albert "Charley"

She died around 1925 in Tennessee. I have record of one sister, Cerrilla, who married William D. Sharp. They raised Lizzie's children after she died around 1925 in Sharp's Chapel, Tennessee.

According to our family's oral history, Lizzie had a sister named Flora, a brother named Thomas, and another siser, Minnie, who married a man by the name of Scott Powell, then their daughter Gladys married a man named Emerson Roe.

If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated!

My ancestor James Dunn came to Kentucky between 1848 and 1850 based on records we have from court and census records. James (abt. 1828 - abt. 1862), his wife Mary Mitchell (abt. 1824-1864), their three children and a Larkin Dunn (1835-1929) are all listed in the 1850 US census in District 1 of Muhlenberg Co., KY in family #598/598. When James Dunn moved to Kentucky, Mary Mitchell's parents, John and Nancy Mitchell. and her siblings.

It is believed that James Dunn and Larkin Dunn are somehow related, but no one know how. When I found Larkin's death certifcate on-line it stated his father's name was L. Dunn and that he (Larkin) was born in Smith County, Tennesee. I do know that James Dunn believed that he married in Smith County, but I have yet to find proof of that marriage.

Anyone with information or help to find my links to Tennessee for my ancestors who claimed that they had them.

Hello, I'm searching for my Cherokee ancestor. I'm sure it's
thru my grandmother Lennie Belle Newman and most likely thru
her mother's side of the family, but I'll list her father's
side at the end of this, just in case. Hope that one or more
members here might have an idea about any of this.

Lennie Belle Newman; b. 22 Sep 1892 Muhlenberg Co., Ky d.
14 Aug 1989 St. Joseph, Mi. Her mother Isabelle Hays; b. 28
Sep 1869 Green Co., Ky d. 28 Jun 1910 Muhlenberg Co., Ky.
Isabelle's father Joseph Henry Hays; b. 25 Jul 1846 Smith
Co., Tn d. 13 May 1914 Greenville, Ky. J.H. Hays' father
Joseph W. Hays; b. 1818 Tn married 1835 Smith Co., Tn d.
1859 Muhlenberg Co., Ky. J.W. was married to Lucinda b. 1816
Tn. No surname listed for Lucinda, could she be Cherokee?

Isabelle Hays' mother Francis Catherine(Fannie)Crail;b. 27
Jun 1849 Muhlenberg Co., Ky d. 1 Aug 1883 Muhlenberg Co.,
Ky. Fannie's father Henry Crail; b. 1818 Nc married abt.
1835 to Lucinda Jolliff; b. 1818 Ky d. 1892 Ky. I've read in
different places where L. Jolliff might be Cherokee, but
I've found no proof. Henry Crail's father James Crail; b.
1787 Md d. 1873 Green Co., Ky was married to Ann; b. 1791 Nc
d. Green Co., Ky. No surname listed for Ann, could she be
Cherokee?

My grandmother's father Claudius Grant Newman; b. 4 Dec
1862 Muhlenberg Co., Ky d. 30 Dec 1930 Hawarden, Ia :
husband of Isabelle Hays. C.G. Newman's father James Eugene
Newman; b. 7 Dec 1827 Muhlenberg Co., Ky d. 21 May 1867
Muhlenberg Co., Ky was married to Marina Jane Dwyer. Her
parents were Lewis Dwyer and Elizabeth Warren. The Newman
family has been traced back to Peter Newman of England in
the 1600's.

Joseph Henry Hays is listed as Henry, surname Hase, in the
1850 Smith Co. census.

HENSON/HINSON

I'm searching for William J. Henson's parents. I have William J. Henson (b. 1834) living with Thomason (b. 1801) and Emily Hinson (1850 she was 31 y.o.) in 1850 and 1840 in Jackson County, TN. Thomason's mother Ana Hinson (born in NC) resides with them too.

In 1820 Tomlinson Henson was living in Monroe County, KY with a female about his same age (so obviously not Emily)

In the Jackson County, TN 1850 census - they deliberately spell William J.'s name differently than the family he is living with. I take that to mean that he is of blood, but something is off. I am assuming that Emily is not his birth mother, but I have to prove that his father is Thomason Tomlinson Hinson in order to move back.

Any information at all?

Robin - deadlinz@aol.com
Henry had the following children as listed in his will - John, Richard, Robert, Henry, Joseph, Archibald, Sarah Kirby Pankey, Judah Kirby Renfroe, William Kirby. There also may be a daughter who married a Wakefield? Really interested in something about Robert, if possible.

I am looking for any information on George W. McGee, born abt 1812 in SC. He married Sarah ??? between 1830 and 1840, probably in Smith Co, TN but I have been unable to find marriage records. I believe his father to be Solomon McGee born abt 1780 in VA, died after 1860. He is listed living near George W. in Smith Co, 13th Distr. in 1860. Solomon's family is listed in Smith Co. by 1820. George W.'s son, William Wesley McGee is my great-grandfather, and I would love to find any information documenting George W.'s parents or wife. I have lots of information on his descendants that I would be happy to share.
Seeking information on background and children of James Bradley (orig. from Caswell, NC) and Dolly Burton.

My great grandfather was named Burton Bradley, and was born in Kings Creek, Wilkes/Caldwell County, NC. It has been speculated his grandfather may have been this James Bradley, but I have no solid proof of that. There is some sort of connection with Tennessee as my grandfather, Robert Hill Bradley, journeyed up from Georgia to Jefferson County, Tennessee to marry Nannie Williams.

Any ideas or suggestions on how I might pursue this would be welcomed. Thanks all! Robert Lee Bradley

Am trying to find any information about the parents/siblings/etc. for Elizabeth Oakley & Joseph Hardcastle. Elizabeth was born in Tennessee about 1829. She married Joseph K. Hardcastle 16 Nov 1848 in Smith Co., TN. They had at least 8 children: William, Margaret, Mary, John James, Sarah, Mose, Joseph Thomas & Martha. Elizabeth died before 1877. In the 1850 census, there was a James Oakley living next door to Elizabeth & Joseph...was he Elizabeth's brother? Have found no hard evidence as to their respective families - and am starting to lean toward the "mothership" theory. I sure would appreciate any information or leads about their respective families and the circumstances surrounding Elizabeth's death. ("Liz & Joe" are my husband's gg-grandparents.) You can reach me directly at panhandlekid@yahoo.com if you like. Thanks so much in advance!

Sheryl H.
OK

I am looking for any information on the above surnames... I am still looking for the marriage of Abraham Snider/Synder and Elizabeth Craig. I am thinking the time for marriage was around 1830-1832. Their first child was born in 1832 in Smith County, near Rome.

According to one of the daughter's obituaries, they left Smith Co. and settled in Jefferson County, Illinois in 1844 and later settled in Jersey County, Illinois (they were in the 1850 census of Jersey County) and the 1840 census of Smith Co, TN...

I did find a Abraham Snyder in the 1830 census in Greene County, TN... Is that close to Smith County?

Any information that can be found on the Snider family would be greatly appreciated.

Abraham was born 1801 in Tennessee; however, I am not sure if it was Smith County or not. Elizabeth Craig was born around 1813 in North Carolina. Trying to find parents of both people.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Juls

Montgomery Family of Smith Co. TN 1800

I am looking for information on the Montgomery family who were in Smith Co. TN then Williamson Co. later in Giles Co. TN. I would like to find out more info on this family to see if they have a Carter or Kennedy connection.
The following is from Don who did research in Salt Lake City recently and formed the following timeline

Robert Carter and John Kennedy both appear on the 1801 tax list for Williamson Co. TN. Robert Carter came from TN to IL in 1817 and settled near Dempsey Kennedy, whose first wife was Sallie Carter, of unconfirmed relationship to Robert Carter. This makes Robert Carter of special interest as a possible co-migrant with Dempsey Kennedy. In SLC I also looked for Robert Carter in the Williamson Co. TN deeds and found that on 17 Jan 1804 he witnessed a deed from William Montgomery of Sumner Co. to Henry Cook for land on the West Harputh River. He witnessed a deed from William Montgomery Sr. of Sumner Co. to Henry Cook on 7 Jan 1805, and he witnessed two other deeds in which Henry Cook was also a witness. So the Montgomery connections (with some county info intermixed) so far are:

1802 - John Kennedy buys Smith Co. TN land from James Montgomery, Dempsey Kennedy is a witness.
1802 - James Montgomery and John Kennedy are both assigned to work under a road overseer in Smith Co. TN.
1803 - John Kennedy of Washington Co. TN buys land on Cane Creek in Williamson Co. TN from Michael Montgomery of Sullivan Co. TN.
1804 - Robert Carter witnessed a deed in Williamson Co. TN from William Montgomery of Sumner Co. to Henry Cook.
1807 - Maury Co. and future Giles Co. area taken from Williamson Co. TN.
1808 - John and Sam Montgomery are first settlers in area of Giles Co. TN at Elk Ridge Church on Robertson's Fork.
1808-9 - John Kennedy is one of the first settlers of the Bradshaw Creek region of Giles Co. TN.
Williams - Henry Burton or Samuel - Dist 15, Smith Co, 1880
Hello Smith County,

Several of my family members have tried to find a person in our Family, a great-great-grandmother in my case. I would appreciate any information on my family, many of them were raised in either Gordonsville or Hickman, Tennessee.

The 1800 Census shows that Fannie (my GG Grandmother) lived with Samuel Williams, along with the children James H. (my G Grandfather), William Mathew (Uncle Billy) and Mary N.E. (later Myers) and Roxy.

I cannot find a 1890 Census. That would fill in a lot of blanks. My G Grandad, James H. Williams, was in Lamar County, TX, in 1900 and 1910 Census.

I don't know where Henry B. Williams was in 1890 and why the family lived with Samuel? I don't know when Henry B. moved to TX or how he ended up in CA??

I am searching for information on my great-great-grandmother Fannie Williams (b.17-Sep-1847, d.1899). She married Henry Burton Williams (b. 13-Aug-1848, d.27-Nov-1936) in Smith, County, Tennessee, on 30-Jan-1868.

Henry Burton-Fannie Williams children were James Henry (my great grandfather), William Mathew, Mary Elizabeth, Roxie Catherine, Charley Edward, and Melissa Jane Williams, born in 1868, 1871, 1875, 1878, 1881, and 1885, respectively. These children were all born in Gordonsville or Hickman, Smith Co., TN.

One confusing part is that the 1880 US Census, Tennessee, Smith Co, Hickman, Series T9, Row 1280, Page 166, lists a Williams family very important to me. The Williams family on this page lists Samuel, Fannie, James H. William M., Mary N.E., and Roxie C., which matches my family, except the Samuel part, and the ages are correct. (see note above)

One matching Census for my family is the 1860 US Census, Dekalb County, page 211, District 16, Laurel Hill Post Office, Sept. 1, 1860, by James M. Lee. Line 1, #1697/1485 lists Jane Williams, Catherine, Henry B., Elijah Bryant, and Margaret J. Bryant, ages 52, 30, 12, 22 and 17. This is my great-great grandfather Henry Burton Williams with his mother Jane (Patterson) Williams, wife of James McNeil Williams, deceased, and the family with the youngest Williams girl living with her Bryant husband at the family home.

My aunt Geneva Williams traveled to the Gordonsville area a long time ago and researched this exact information. She came up with Henry Burton's wife being name Fannie (Francis or Fanny) Pugh Manners, with Manners being a previous marriage. The Pugh could have been Puh according to the notes. Also, this information states that Fannie was 1/2-Cherokee Native American.

I have tried unsuccessfully to find anything about Fannie Pugh Manners Williams. Henry Burton Williams death certificate listed his wife as Fannie, which was signed by his daughter Mary E. Williams Myers. So, I do believe Henry Burton's wife's name was Fannie.

Fannie apparently had two children by the first marriage and they were named Horace and Tannie (Tanny) Manners. Cannot find our anything about these children, although I found a Horace Manners married to Etta Nixon where the ages match. Still could not find them on the census, and they were all born in Hickman, Tennessee.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would be glad to summarize my family's connection to Smith Co. once I have the exact facts. I have a lot of information of the family members, but am missing some very important facts.

Most of the Williams family later moved to North Texas and Indian Territory. Still trying to understand the California connection and why Henry Burton moved to Tulare, County. A lot of my family still lives in the part of Oklahoma that was once Indian Territory, around the Ada, Oklahoma area.

Thanks,
Larry Bailey
Victoria, Texas
Raulston Jenkins on 1850 Smith Co census, son of James, son of Roderick

Can someone please help me make this connection? I am interested in the RAULSTON JENKINS that is shown on the 1850 census.
I have an ANDREW R(some records show RAWLS) Jenkins born 1860-61 in TN(death certificate says Scottsville, KY but find no record) I found an Andrew living with brother JOHN JENKINS (bca1847 in TN)on the 1880 Warren County, Ky census. I think this is mine as my Andrew named his first born son John Clifford and this record has too many similarities to ignore.
Anyway, I found that this RAULSTON JENKINS had a son JOHN 2 years old on the 1850 census and this has been the only JOHN I can find that could fit.Plus the coincedence of the name RAULSTON and RAWLS. I know I am "searching" here but just feel like this may be it. However, have not been able to find any other records on this RAULSTON JENKINS. Does anyone have any more info on this family? I know this line of JENKINS has been well researched from the SMITH CO site but everything I have seen stops at Raulston.

PLEASE, any info would be greatly appreciated and would gladly share my info if we can make a connection to this line. Thanks!

Jacob Goodner, son of John Goodner and Martha (Stewart) Goodner was born on 8-7-1811 in Smith county. He later married Charlotte Kemp (b.2-27-1815 location unknown), daughter of Sarah (maiden unknown, b. 4-22-1775 location unknown) and Murphy Kemp (b. 3-21-1770, location unknown). Anyone having ANY information on the Kemps, who we can only assume also lived in Smith county, or on the Stewarts, please contact me. I have the Goodner line all the way back to the old country.

I'm looking for any information on Vergil KELLEY. He is listed in the 1920 Smith County census as a boarder in the Grisham household. Vergil's mother's family surname was DAY. I'm trying to establish a connection with Vergil KELLEY and Edna SHOEMAKE in Smith County. I think Vergil might've had some DAY relatives living in Smith County but I'm not for sure. Vergil and Edna had a daughter who is now 85. Vergil and Edna split up before their daughter was born, for unknown reason's. I was told back then the father had to support the child no matter what and there may be some records of such support that was paid for the child. The records were called "basterdy" records. I've personally never heard of such records but if you have or you can help me with my search drop me a letter. Thanks!!

GOD BLESS,

SANDRA

Need help deciphering a name on 1850 census

I've about worn my eyes out trying to decipher a surname on the 1850 Smith County census. I need another pair of eyes to help.

The name in question is on page 291, line 15. The first name is Absolom F. He has a brother named Solomon G. They are in the household of Bias RUSSELL, but their surname isn't Russell.

Any ideas? I have magnified this page until it's just dots, have dimmed the resolution, have done pretty much everything except stand on my head and I still can't read this name. I think I'm trying too hard.

I have no idea who these guys were or why they were living with my Russells. Wondering if Bias' wife was married before or something.

Thank you!

In the 1850 census for Smith County, Southern Division is found Joseph Baughn, a miller born in VA, with wife Rachael, also born in VA, and four children all born in TN. They are not found anywhere in 1860 or 1870. Has someone doing local research come across mention of this family in local records (deeds, court orders, tax lists, wills, cemeteries, etc.) between 1850 and 1860?

Joseph, 34
Rachael, 33
Elizabeth, 6
James, 4
Jefferson, 3
Martha, 2
