No, even though I live in the eastern suburbs I can say the problem is urban sprawl. The city has been moving east because that was the only way it could go. The MS River is the downtown western border, only a short few miles south and we are in Mississippi, moving north was inhibited by the topography (tremendous low lands, swampy etc). So east it has gone - for miles and miles. We are in a rather interesting location when one thinks of it. More later.

I wonder if it was left that way because it is on Elvis Presley Blvd that they somehow concetreated on his name and forget the rest of the area. its a shame. I wish you luck in getting something done. I am wondering also if there is not a Memphis Facebook that people can post on and see if something is done for it.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Sue

Dear Sue, this cemetery came to my attention when I was 'googling' for directions for a funeral at the Forest Hill Cemetery Memphis (as opposed to some other locations). Yesterday I drove up Hernando Road, which is literally beside the I-240 and my heart broke. Hernando Road appears to never have been a street developed with houses, although that is a surprise to me. It is seedy looking and the gate to both Mt. Carmel and the Hollywood Cemetery, literally next door stand gaping open. How anything is left of it is a mystery to me. The local communities are likely on streets that run off Hernando - just a long block west of Elvis Presley Blvd, known as Bellevue to us old timers. There is a Memphis Remembered (sort of) website and I think I will post something there. Just as a matter of interest, there are at least five cemeteries right in a row along here: Calvary, across Person Rd is the Forest Hill Memphis, next to that is Temple Israel, then Hollywood then little Mt Carmel.

Sometimes people just get so busy that they forget those who have gone on before. I dont live in TN but in Indiana or I would help. I dont have any relatives in this cemetery but hate the idea that others do and its a shame it is not better taken care of. If you live close by, maybe a notice on the bulliton board in the local grocery store might work to get volunteers to help clean it up.

I wish you luck.

Sue

I'm ashamed to say that I am a lifelong Memphian, a genealogist and have always called myself intensely interested in cemetery preservation. But I have been involved with mostly those in Mississippi and never even realized what was going on in my own city. I was looking for directions to the Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery, saw the names of the Hollywood and Mt Carmel and read just what you said. I would like to know if there are any family members or just citizens who are interested in trying to organize to correct these disgraces?

Found a record for her in the 1914 Memphis City Directory where she was listed as a nurse and living on Peabody Street. Since then, the trail has gone cold.
Can you help?

My mothers name is Rosetta Donely. I was told my fathers name is Melvin and he was a school teacher. I was also told his mother was a school teacher as well. My mother lived on 716 west Oak St in Memphis Tennessee. My aunt told me she thinks his mother lived on the same street. If anyone could help me in anyway I would really appreciate it.

I'm sure that his relatives do not want to hear this, but it needs to be said. Orville R. Foster was a pedophile. As a student of his at the Pasadena Hammond Organ Studio, he molested me numerous times, and who knows how many other boys he molested. I never told my parents because I knew that my father would kill him, and I didn't want a father in prison. Fortunately, I was strong minded and was able to put his horrible experience behind me. My only regret was that after I grew up, I didn't track him down and beat the living crap out of him. Now, he has only one person to answer to. If he repented...great. If not...rot in Hell Orville.

None of the Civil War soldiers fron TN can be him as he had left to seek his fortune before that and was actually in Utah by the time of the war and as a Canadian by birth would not have been required to fight.

Looking for information on my GGgrandfather, especially his early life. He was born c 1830. In 1854 he married Elizabeth Augusta Leaman in Geneva NY. Newspaper announcement (and later articles about him) stated he was from Whitby Canada West (ON). He went to Memphis TN by 1855 where he practiced law. His son, my Great grandfather, William Leaman Harlow, was born there in February 1855. He subsequently west west to seek his fortune in mining and his wife and son went back to Geneva. Supposedly he first went to South America and then Salt Lake City UT where he opened a number of mines and apparantly also operated some restaurants. By 1880, he was in Gunnison CO where he married again to Jane? and was either a farmer or restauranteer. Finally, he was one of the founding fathers of grand Junction CO where he was the first to show that fruit growing could be profitable. He died in 1891 in Palisade CO.
I am trying to find anything about him before he came to Geneve. Who were his parents? Was he born in Whitby? Any connection to either the loyalist Harlow or the Revolutionary war hero, William Leaman Harlow?
