I am seeking information about Jack Jarratt who was married to Thelma Williams and who lived in or near Shelby County, Tennessee, in the 1930s. "Jack" is very likely a nickname; however, it is the only name I have at this time.

I'm looking for information about Henry W. Carpenter. From at least 1878 on, he lived in St. Louis, married to Rose Becker. He worked as a painter.

According to census info, he was born Apr. 1852 (possibly in Connecticut or Canada). He died 20 Sep 1903.

His obituary in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said "Memphis papers please copy."

So now I'm wondering what the Memphis connection is.

Anyone know anything about this man or his family?

Jennifer, Since the Mahers were huge farmers in the Shelby County area, they may have been hired to farm the land. It did say on the census he was a farmer, etc. Here is an idea, try the Diocese of Memphis - [901] 373-1200. Their mailing address is 5825 Shelby Oaks Drive, Mphs 38134. Their web address is www.cdom.org. Be sure and ask to speak to an archivist - somebody in the library.

It looks like several Mahers are buried at Calvary Cemetery. You may want to call them and see if other Mahers are buried there. Maybe someone at the Diocese will have he list.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSln=Ma...;

Calvary Cemetery
1663 Elvis Presley Boulevard
Memphis
Shelby County
Tennessee USA
Postal Code: 38106
Phone: (901) 948-1529

If you haven't checked this site,
http://register.shelby.tn.us/index.php
you may try. There are lots of records in the property records and death and marriage records.

Have you checked with the Benjamin Hooks Central Library?
They have a great Memphis and Shelby County History Room and maybe someone there could help.

901 415-2700

I hope some of this will help.

Hi, my name is Jennifer Carwile. My mother, Mary Agnes Maher, is looking for information on her grandpa (William J Maher). In the 1920 census it shows him, his wife, and 3 children being at the Home of the Good Shepherd. However, they aren't listed as inmates and it shows his job as general helper on the place. We are very confused about all of this. It was said (somewhere) they were court ordered to live there, but why would they be on the same census list w/ the inmates if they were located on the "other side" of the place? Surely they weren't the only ones there that weren't inmates (there was one other, I think).Anyway, we are really stuck at this point. We want to know why they were there and how long (if possible).

Thanks for anything you find. I'm not sure you are still doing this, but if=
you are, thanks in advance!

Jennifer Carwile

I'm sorry I was wrong on the marriage lic. for William and Ida. I got the first names confused with John Cummings. There was a John Clark and Ida Brown.

This is the death certificate for the William Clark. I went by the address on the dc and the one on Ida's dc. If you find out that Gerald Cummings is the Gerald D Cummings that is listed in the property records....estate records and has Barry L. Cummings as executor. You'll need to google Barry L. Cummings Memphis TN and there is a web site listing Barry L. Cumming.

Barry L.
Re: Looking for Copies of the Memphis Catholic Journal

I sent your request to a friend and here is her reply. Hope this helps.

I would suggest they start with the local Catholic Diocese office. I, personally, am not familiar with Memphis Catholic Journal, but it may be the precursor to the West Tennessee Catholic. (The Our Sunday Visitor is the national Catholic paper - think of it in terms of the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the USA Today - one local, one national.)

He can try the Diocese of Memphis - [901] 373-1200. Their mailing address is 5825 Shelby Oaks Drive, Mphs 38134. Their web address is www.cdom.org. Be sure and tell your friend that he will need to speak to an archivist - somebody in the library.

Since Calvary Cemetery is administered by the Diocese also, they may be able to help your friend find burial records. Also, since St. Peter's Church at Third & Adams (which is where I attend Mass) is the oldest Catholic Church in West Tennessee, and it was founded by an Irishman, Eugene Magevney (his small house is next door to the Church, and the parlor of his house was where the first Mass in Memphis was held - Eugene and Mary Magevney's wedding), you can tell him to call the pastor, Fr. Tom Condon, O.P., and let him know you need to speak to the Parish Archivist. The Archivist will be able to help your friend search old parish records (the Church was founded in 1840) for baptisms, marriages, funerals, etc. St. Peter's was the "Irish" church, St. Mary's the "German" church, and St. Patrick's is administered by the Vincentians - the Society of St. Vincent - for migrant workers. (Kelly and O'Connor are both Irish names, which is why I suggested you try St. Peter's.)

Hope this helps. I know - it may seem like information overkill - but I hope this helps your friend.

Please check out this site.
http://register.shelby.tn.us/index.php

There is a Sallie Holder that married a D.S. Tilson Feb. 1903 It is witnessed by a J.W. Tilson. The record states Holden, but if you look at the image it shows Mrs. Sallie Holder's signature.
The marriage record for Jim Holder and Sarah Wilson is also listed. Sarah's (Tilson) death certificate is listed and shows her husband as Dick.

There is a death certificate image for a James Holder and his death his 1926 and list him as an artist. So this must not be your James M. Holder but could be a relative.

A James L. Holder died 1-16-73 age 76. There's no image for his death certificate but you can request it.

There are other records I didn't get to check. I hope this helps.

On the 1880 census for Shelby County I found a James Holder, (he is working on a farm in Shelby county, TN and I didn't find any other Holder families in the area) that lists his place of birth as Missouri, however his children list place of birth as South Carolina or Kentucky. James Holder was dead or gone by the 1900 census as his wife Sarah was living by herself with her children who were:

Mary Jane Holder born 1884 Shelby County, TN died 1951 Shelby County, TN

James Lanson Holder born 1896 Shelby County, TN died 1973 Memphis, TN

Finley Earnest Holder born 1900 died unknown

Sarah Wilson Holder by 1910 married a man with the last name Tilson.

Sarah Wilson Holder was born April 1862 in TN died 1933 in Shelby County, TN.

That is all I have on them I wish I could find more this is my mother-in-laws family and she has passed away so I can't find out any more from her.If you have any thing on this family I would be happy to hear from you, Thank you, Lana
Thank you for your help, I believe I have James L Holder's death certificate but I can't find it at the moment I probably miss filed it. I have searched in vain for James Marion Holder. I don't think the James that died in 1926 is him. Are you related? Thank you again, Lana

CLARK, CUMMINGS, BROWN

Seeking information regarding William CLARK, his wife, Ida May BROWN Clark. They were on the 1920 and 1930 Shelby County, TN census. Also on the 1920 census in the same household was their daughter and her husband -- John and Mabel Cummings and their two children, Elizabeth and Gerald. The two families were still together on the 1930 census; however, Mabel is designated as "widow". I have found no further information except Gerald is listed on the Social Security Death Index with a death date of 25 December 1987, Memphis, Shelby, TN, so evidently the families stayed in the same area. Any help with this would be appreciated.

That seems to be a great site. I found the death record for Mable Cummings and for Ida Brown Clark. However, I did not find the marriage date for Wm. & Ida nor the death date for William (33 William Clark's on it). It would be great if they would include the year of birth on the death records, but as I previously noted....it is a wonderful source of information and I thank you very much for bringing it to my attention! I will continue to work with it and see if I can find the other two records. Thanks again.
