I can not at this time connect your Avery family with the one below, but since both came to Memphis from New York, they are likely related. I am a distant cousin to Minor Meriwether who married Elizabeth Avery below. Also her brother-in-law, Spence Hall Lamb, sold land in 1890 to my gg gf where we still live today.

Notes for ELIZABETH EDMONDS AVERY:
She was a pioneer suffragist. She was the first woman to legally vote in the United Sates. She owned extensive property in Memphis and complained that she was taxed without representation. She rented a theater and spoke to a large number of women and annoucned that she would demand to be allowed to vote. She was granted a special order by the election commission to vote in any election in Ward 5 in the year 1872; which she did. She wrote in her book about the recollections of her 92 years, that the next year a special gilt edged ballot was provided just for her and she had no doubt that was so her ballot could be identified and later removed without it being counted; so she did not bother to vote thereafter. A Historical marker commemorating her vote stands in Confederate Park on Front St. in Memphis.
