Hello. My name is Tonya and I am seeking the will of Col Samuel Wear and his wives: Mary Lyle Thompson and Mary G.

Col Samuel and his first wife, Mary Lyle Thompson, daughter Mary Thompson Wear married a Col Simeon Perry. Col Simeon owned my ggggGrandmother, Julia, and based on the 1820 census, he may have owned my ggggg Grandmother, and gggggg Grandmother. I am desperately trying to learn the names of my grandparents and Col Wear's will along with his wives may provide their names.

Mary Thompson Wear Perry died in 1821 so I'm hoping that Col Wear and his wives will reveals the names of slaves that were bequeathed to their children.

Any help anyone can provide will be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Tonya

Houk

I am looking for verification that John Houk (b. abt 1773 in VA and moved to Sevier County as a boy) is the father of Hopkins L. Houk (b. abt 1811 in TN) and Archimedes Houk (b. abt 1809 in TN) I have verified that my GGG-grandfather was Hopkins L. Houk (b. abt 1811 in TN). His brother was Archimedes Houk (b. abt 1809 in TN). Hopkins Houk's daughter was Mary Jane Houk, my GG-Grandmother. The census and other records indicate that there are other people named "Hopkins Houk" and "Archimedes Houk" in the same family from Sevier County, both older and younger.

I have a southern claims commission affidavit filed by Archimedes Houk saying that the father of Archimedes Houk and Hopkins Houk was a Captain in the Tennessee Militia who served under Andrew Jackson at the battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814. I also have records showing that John Houk of Sevier County was in fact a Captain under Jackson at that battle. But I don't actually have any documents showing that this John Houk was in fact the father of Hopkins Houk and Archimedes Houk. I've found many family trees which say that he is their father, but none of those family trees cite documentary evidence. Does anyone have any information that can help?
Wm Kendle 1752-1834 & family of Sevier Co TN--anyone know more?

I found from the cemetery lookup response you can see below that pg 737 of "Smokies" wasn't a cemetery reference, but a compilation of RW patriots from other sources. So, I thought I should summarize what I know of Wm Kendle to see if anyone has more info on him. He's an interesting guy in my opinion. WILLIAM KENDLE: b.21 Aug 1752 Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England d.18 Nov 1834 Sevier Co TN. In England he was an apprenticed blacksmith, in 1777 he was pressed into the British Army & taken to America where he first fought against us but at Charleston in Oct 1780 he deserted & joined up with General Francis Marion The Swampfox & fought in several historic engagements in the Carolinas until discharged Dec 1782. He went to live in Moore Co NC & 1810 US Census there shows he & wife aged 45+ w/ son 16-25 & dau 10-15, living next door to JACOB CAGLE & ANDREW AUMAN w/ several LUTHER families nearby on same census page. 1820 census shows just he & wife. Apparently she died aft1820 & he came to Sevier Co and married 1827 Elizabeth ___? the JP was Keith ___? Men of his neighborhood Mar 1833 Sevier Co who vouched for him in his pension papers were: ISAAC HILL, ISAAC RICHARDS, HENRY KRAGLE, WILLIAM KRAGLE, JESSE RODGERS; appeared before Justice RANDLE HILL. His widow Elizabeth Kendle is in the 1840 census Sevier Co living alone next door to WILLIAM NEWMAN & JAMES W ELLIS. My theory is that his son is WILLIAM KINDLE b.1786 NC m. BARBARA LUTHER b.1797 Randolph Co NC; other researchers' family trees show several marriages among KINDLE, AUMAN(ORMAN), CAGLE, LUTHER in both descendants & ancestors. ANYONE HAVE MORE INFO ON THIS REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT? Where did he live in Sevier Co? What was his wife's maiden name? Why isn't he in 1830 census of Sevier Co? I see some Kendle-Kindle in adjacent Haywood Co NC--are they related here? Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Fred in Folsom CA

I see his widow Elizabeth Kendle in the 1840 Sevier Co Census at age 50-60; she is not in 1850 census; I could not find her in the cemetery index. Anyone have info on her? I have info to share on this RW Patriot from Moore Co NC & Suffolk, England. Thanks for your help!

Looking for parents of the Thomas Henry Mount, age 33, enlisted in the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry, Company D. A government stone was issued reading "Thomas H. Mount, PVT, Co D, 4th Tenn Cav" when this man died June 3, 1870 and was placed "at or near New Market in Jefferson County". Obviously these are the same person.

This gets confusing because there is a Henry Mount, age 22, also enlisted in the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry. Who are his parents.

A John Mount, age 24 enlisted in the Second Tennessee Infantry, under Captain Underdown. And lastly who is Napolean B. Mount living in Henry's Cross Roads in 1890. He served in the Second Tennessee Infantry also.

Has anyone done this family who could lend a hand?

Breeden and Henry Families

My gg-grandfather, John C. Breeden, filed a claim in 1872 to the US Government for reimbursement for a mare, mule and 100 bushels of corn taken from his Monroe Co. farm by Sherman's army in 1863. In the claim he states that a nephew, G. W. Henry, served in the Confederacy and if living, John thought he was in Kansas in 1872. John was born in Sevier County around 1823 and the only George Henry I find of the right age is the son of William Henry and Catherine. If this George Henry is John's nephew then it would seem that Catherine might be his sister.

I'm asking Sevier Co. researchers if they have any information on George Henry, son of William and Catherine, or anyone who could be G.W. Henry, Confederate veteran who may have moved to Kansas. Thanks for your help.

There was a man named John Walker who owned a saw mill in Sevier County. He reportedly died while returning home from his mill. He was on a vehicle drawn by a mule, he fell from the wagon and was ran over. Do not know the year. Does anyone have such a person in their Walker family?

I know I probably have a message way back on this subject... but I am looking for information on the Hales of Sevier Co. My grand father was Marion Clay Hale ( on his birth cert. it says Caswell Clay, but shortly after his birth, they changed it to Marion) His father was James Columbus Hale, he married Rachel Reagan. I am thinking Columbus' fathers name was Jim or James, and that he married a Cytha (sp) Sytha, or Sypha Green(e). any information on this line of 'Hales' would be appreciated, and also any info on Rachels family would be helpful too. Her father was George Reagan, who married Rebecca Garner or Gardner.

Thanks in Advance,
Melissa
Email me @ melissabarndt@hotmail.com or barndt1977m@hotmail.com

I am looking for Hattie Melvina Romines, born Feb 1855 died Mar 1920 in Sevier County. She married William Cam Byrd in 1903, they had 3 children and he was shot to death by Mell Maples in 1907. Then she married Dan Gann in 1910 and they had 3 children before she died in 1920. Court records show that she and her siblings - John H., Joseph, and Kate J. - were appointed a guardian - Mr. W.A. Bowers in 1897. In 1899, Mr. J.C. Flinn takes guardianship of John, Joseph, and Hettie. I was told that Joseph was killed by a train in Sevierville and John went to Springfield, MO. I was also told that her parents names were John and Mary and that they had an uncle Hughs who lived to be 99 years old who was married to Dory. Does this match anything anybody has?

My 3X great grandmother was Mary Jane Cowden, Cowden was her married name as she married Samuel Cowden. There is a 1917 death certificate for a Mary Jane Hodges Cowden, daughter of Isham Hodges and Elizabeth Ellis. I believe this is the same Mary Jane Cowden I am descended from. However, in the 1880 census there were two Mary Jane Cowdens in Sevier county that were the same age. If any one out there has any information that would help me determine that the Mary Jane who Married Sam Cowden was a Hodges I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I am looking for some kind person that has access to the book "In the Shadow of the Smokies". I have been told it has many Tennessee cemeteries with transcriptions of tombstones. I would be very appreciative if someone would copy pages pertaining to the Thomas Cemetery near Happy Creek in Sevier County. Also if there is a list of persons known to be buried there but the grave is unmarked would be great. Since I have never seen the book, I do not know the page numbers I need. I am willing to pay any expense. Some of the tombstones that have inscriptions are: Benjamin L.Thomas born 10 Jul 1844 died 04 Apr 1893. Zacheus Thomas Born 12 Jun 1819 Died 01 Sep 1899. Hattie Johnson Born 06 Oct 1910 Died 21 Dec 1937. Thanks!

William Franklin Blair, ? son of William Harrison Blair?

My great-great-grandparents were William Franklin Blair (1846-9/12/1877) & Nancy M. Blair (3/17/1847-9/13/1878). They were married in Sevier Cty., TN, 5/17/1868. Their son, Bruce Lafayette Blair (7/27/1869-4/24/1956), was my great-grandfather. Nancy was the daughter of Albion Tipton Blair, & is buried with her parents in McMinn Cty, TN. I am trying to determine if William Franklin was the son of William Harrison Blair (6/21/1813-9/13/1891). Albion Tipton Blair & William Harrison Blair were both sons of Hugh Blair (1781-12/20/1868). I found a ledger by Hugh Blair & continued by someone else (Sevier Cty.) which provided some of this information, along with other online information. I also found census entries for a William Blair, age 4 & 14, in Sevier Cty., TN for 1850 & 1860, in the household of Harrison Blair (married to Mary Elizabeth Chafin), then found William, Nancy, & Bruce in the 1870 census. I cannot locate any cemetery entries online for William Franklin or W.F. Blair, so I am hoping someone might have some additional information in order to verify William. Bruce L. Blair, my great-grandfather, was raised by his grandparents in McMinn Cty., TN. He had a brother, Oliver, & also possibly another brother, William. Since Nancy M. Blair was buried in McMinn Cty., TN, I am thinking William F. must have passed away while still living in Sevier Cty., then Nancy & her sons moved to McMinn Cty. with her parents. My mother was born in McMinn County, TN also.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I am trying to piece everything together & verify that I have the correct William Blair & other correct info.

So if anyone has research on this line of Brocks and would share it, I'd really appreciate it. Maybe if I can find what happened to Wilburn's son, I can atleast rule him out as my Grandfather and move on.

Thanks much,
Diana
Spencer Benson Family, Sevier>Rhea>McMinn TN

Robert A Benson was born in Sevier Co, TN on Feb 11, 1796. Is Robert Benson a son of Spencer Benson, b 1755 Deleware, Revolutionary War soldier who moved to Sevier County abt 1895? His trail to Rhea County where Robert Benson's son William H Benson was born Feb 23, 1828 follows that of Spencer Benson. There seems to be unknown children in lists of Spencer and Comfort Short Benson's children. In 1850 Census Walker County, AL, Robert A Benson, Shoemaker, age 55 TN, Elizabeth, Age 45 TN and their chilldren William H 19 TN, Comfort 15 AL, Robert A 10 AL, Sarah F 8 AL, Elizabeth M 4 AL. Their oldest daughter, Martha Ann Benson, b Mar 1, 1822 Rhea Co, TN, was married Mar 7,1846 to Jesse Harris O'Rear in Walker County, AL. Robert Benson moved to Alabama just before 1835 from McMinn or Rhea Counties, TN (according to Comfort Benson's date of birth). Can anyone provide the link of Robert Benson to Spencer Benson? Any information about the Spencer Benson family would be helpful.
