Samuel Tucker 1780's Wilkes, NC to Robertson, TN

Hi,

I have come across a Wilkes County North Carolina deed where Samuel Tucker sold in December 1796 to tracts of land in Wilkes, NC and he is referred to as Samuel Tucker of Robertson County, Tn. ( Book D pages 355 & 356). Looking through the NC tax records 1784-1796 I can see where he had 250 Acres in Wilkes,NC and 300 Acres in " Western NC" Robertson,TN. The probate records of Robertson,TN list Samuel Tucker as the administrator of John Tucker's estate in 1802 then it seems that he died shortly after and in 1805 Elizabeth Tucker was the administrator of Samuel Tucker.
Does anyone have more information about this family? I suspect that Elizabeth Tucker moved back to Wilkes,NC with her son WIlliam since she died there in 1836 and her deed is probated. Thanks JD Tucker

Barry/Berry and Allen families in Robertson County

I am interested in the Asa Barry/Berry and Mary Allen families who appear in the 1850 census in Robertson County, TN. and their descendants. I believe (but have not confirmed) that Thomas Barry/Berry son of Asa and Eleanor Barry/Berry married Harriet Allen, daughter of Mary and ???? Allen. Mary Allen was listed as head of household on the 1850 census and I do not know her husband's name.
I believe that Thomas and Harriet probably married in about 1858 as their first child, Missouri Ellen, was born in March of 1859.
Apparently something happened to Thomas (Civil War?) and Harriet married Francis Marion Williams. I believe (but again do not know for certain) that Francis Marion is the son of James L. Williams who appears on the 1850 census of Robertson County, TN.
I would like to hear from anyone with knowledge of, or who are related to, these families. I have some information on Thomas and Harriet's descendants that I will be happy to share.
Thank You,
Norman Price

I have done extensive genealogical and historical research on the Wessyngton Plantation in Robertson County, TN for more than twenty years. I have lots of information I would gladly share with anyone interested. I have traced the genealogies of the plantation owners as well as all the slave families. Surnames connected with Wessyngton include:Washington,Terry,Cheatham,Green,Gardner,Williams,Lewis and White. In 1860 Wessyngton was the largest tobacco plantation in America and held 274 slaves. The original founder of the estate Joseph Washington (1770-1848) was a second cousin to President George Washington.

Looking for background of my grandfather, Clarence Arms. He was living in Sadlersville in Robertson County at the time of his death. He married Ethel Lener Chance in Jan.1921 and they had four children, one of which is my mother. I have information that he was the son of James Arms, and that he was originally from Celina, Tennessee. I don't know when my grandfather moved from Celina to Sadlersville; whether he came with his parents, siblings, or if he moved by himself to that area. If anyone has any information that they would be willing to share, I'd certainly appreciate it. Hope to hear from someone soon, Lynn

I have a picture taken in the late 1800s or early 1900's of a woman with 4 children: 2 girls and 2 boys. There is a split rail fence and a log shed in the background. I was told it may be Sarah Smith, later Hendrix.
They lived as sharecroppers on the William or Edwin(Ned)Bell farm and also worked for the Crow family in Springfield/Robertson Co. TN.
I can email the picture upon request.
mcarvelson@yahoo.com
joe mcdonald
I find more than one Christopher with very different dates that suggest that maybe there may have been a Christopher Sr. in between Green Berry's father and James Babb who is listed (suspected?)of being Christopher's father.
Also...does anyone have ANY more info on this James Babb..where did he come from?
I am doing some research for Jack Baggett, a family friend and native of Robertson County Tennessee. Jack is a descendant of Henry Baggett and Melinda Powell. Their son Henry T. Bagget (born approximately Nov 1854) married Virginia Stack (born about 1862). Their son Comer Hill Baggett married Sarah Elliott. I am just beginning this research. I would
very much appreciate any information and/or leads.
Thank you.
-Sylvia D. Hughes

They are buried in Robertson Co. I would like to know the Cemetery. They could have been in the general area around Cedar Hill. It is suspected DeMaries was a MORRIS before she married.

I am looking for my ggrandmother who was born in Springfield, Robertson Co. TN. in 1829. I am trying to determine if her maiden name was NEWTON or PRIDGEN? I suspected that it was Newton but in a pension that she applied for she states that she was married to a GEORGE W. WHITE in 1856 Gonzales Tx. and at the time of marriage she was married with the name PRIDGEN.. She was 27 years old in 1856 so I suspect that this was her 2nd marriage. Are there any NEWTONS in Robertson Co? or even PRIDGENS? My ggrandmother's name was ANNIE ELIZABETH. Any help would be greatly appricated.
JUANITA WOOD

Robertson Co. FORT family descendants

Not related, just passing along some FYI history about the granddaughter (Cornelia Fort), and son (Dr. Rufus Elijah Fort) of Robertson Co. TN native Col. Edwin Augustus FORT

NASHVILLE NATIVE, CORNELIA FORT, WW II ARMY PILOT, 1ST WOMEN PILOT TO DIE IN THE SERVICE OF HER COUNTRY.

While flying over the skies of Hawaii on the morning of December 7, 1941, Cornelia Fort was one of the 1st witnesses to the incoming Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

“On December 7th, 1941 Cornelia Fort, a young civilian flight instructor from Tennessee, and her regular Sunday-morning student took off from John Rodgers Airport in Honolulu. Fort's apprentice was advanced enough to fly regular take-offs and landings and this was to have been his last lesson before going solo. With the novice at the controls, Fort noticed a military aircraft approaching from the sea. At first that didn't strike her as unusual; Army planes were a common sight in the skies above Hawaii. But at the last moment, she realized this aircraft was different and that it had set itself on a collision course with her plane. She wrenched the controls from her student's grasp and managed to pull the plane up just in time to avoid a mid-air crash. As she looked around she saw the red sun symbol on the wings of the disappearing plane and in the distance, probably not more than a quarter mile away, billowing smoke was rising over Pearl Harbor. The disbelieving Fort had just unwittingly witnessed the U.S. entry into World War II. A little more than a year after this near miss, Fort would be flying military aircraft for the U.S. and a mid-air collision would tragically make her the first American woman pilot to die on active military duty.”

To read the rest of her biography, and see a photo of Cornelia, go to
www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/flygirls/peopleevents/pandeAMEX07.html

Cornelia Fort was born in Nashville in 1919, to Dr. Rufus Elijah Fort and his wife Louise Clark, a native of Boston, MA. Dr. Rufus Fort was born in 1872 in Robertson Co. TN, the youngest child of Col. Edwin Augustus Fort (b. 1817 in Robertson Co. TN) and is 2nd wife Julie Garth (a native of Todd Co. KY)

From "Tennessee- The Volunteer State, Vol. 2"

Dr. Rufus E. Fort, a surgeon of Nashville, who has gained distinction by reason of his eminent ability in the profession, was born in Robertson county, Tennessee, on the 19th of March, 1872, and is a son of Colonel Edwin A. and Julia (Garth) Fort, who were natives of Robertson county, Tennessee, and of Todd county, Kentucky, respectively.
The father was a large planter and slave owner in his native county, devoting his entire life to the management and development of his landed interests. He owned five large plantations but conditions brought about by the Civil war caused
him to suffer heavy financial loss. He was the first president and the receiver for the Hendersonville Railroad and figured prominently in connection with public affairs as well as with business interests, representing his county in the state legislature and giving earnest support to all those measures which he deemed of vital worth to the
commonwealth. He passed away in June, 1887, at the age of sixty-seven years and was survived by his wife until 1904.

Dr. Fort pursued his early education in the district schools of his native county and afterward prepared for college at Montgomery Bell Academy. He next entered the University of the South at Sewanee, where he pursued an academic course and later became a student in the medical department of Vanderbilt University, from which he was graduated with the class of 1895. He next did post-graduate work and hospital work in New York, thus greatly adding to his knowledge and promoting his efficiency. He then entered upon the active practice of medicine in Nashville, where he has since remained, and for six years he was superintendent and surgeon of the Nashville City Hospital, being appointed to that position at the comparatively early age of twenty-five years. Later he conducted a private surgical hospital, called the Fort Hospital,
for a period of fourteen years or until 1920, since which time he has been visiting surgeon to the Protestant Hospital, of which he was one of the organizers. He has also been visiting surgeon to the City Hospital for a period of ten years and is now chairman of the board of hospital commissioners.
For the past twenty years he has been a stockholder and director and also medical director of the National Life & Accident
Insurance Company, of which he was one of the organizers. He was a member and president of the state board of health for eight years and has been untiring in his efforts to promote the standards of the profession and render the service of physicians and surgeons of the greatest possible benefit to mankind. At all times he has kept abreast with the trend of professional thought and progress through his membership in various medical organizations as well as by wide reading and study. He is now a member of the American Medical Association, the Southern Surgical and Gynecological Association, of which he was formerly vice president.
Dr. Fort was united in marriage to Miss Louise Clark of Boston, Massachusetts, on the 6th of October, 1909. She is a daughter of Benjamin and Lula (Hensly) Clark. Her father, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, died about 1892. Her mother afterward
became the wife of Dr. George J. Englemann of Boston, where they still reside. Dr. and Mrs. Fort have become the parents of four children: Rufus E., born August 29, 1910; Dudley Clark, born December 5, 1911; Garth Edmund, born February 14, 1914;
and Cornelia Clark, February 5, 1919.
Dr. Fort is a member of the Hermitage Club, of which he has served as president, and he also belongs to the Nashville Golf and Country Club. Politically he is a democrat, and his religious faith is that of the Christian church, of which he is a loyal adherent. He acted as chairman of the local examining board during the World
war, and the supreme regret of his entire life was that he was unable to actively serve his country during that war on account of an attack of the flu at that time.
Dr. Fort makes his home on Riverside boulevard in Nashville and in addition to his property there he owns and operates a large farm noted for its fine herd of Jersey cattle. In fact this is the most famous herd in the south and one of the most noted in the United States, having taken probably more blue ribbons than any other herd in the south. His place is known as Fort Land and is a most beautiful southern home on Riverside boulevard. He is giving considerable attention also to the cultivation of four hundred acres of rich river bottom land equipped with every convenience of the
model farm of the twentieth century. In his agricultural and stock raising interests he finds rest and recreation from arduous cares of the profession, which however claim the major part of his time and attention and in connection with which he has won distinguished honors and prestige.
In his profession, Dr. Fort ranks with the greatest surgeons of the nation. One of his brilliant operations, never before performed and now part of the history of surgery in the United States, was the complete excision of the clavicle and complete
excision of the first rib and removal of part of the sternum. Big in mind, body and heart, Rufus E. Fort is a typical southern gentleman of the old school, with all the ambition for service and progress that his scientific knowledge and energy, enthusiasm, abilities and patriotism can bring to the full development of the newer south, of which he is one of the greatest and most outstanding examples.

FISHERS of Lawrance County, Ark.

In 1972 I published a book (Fisher Scrap Book 1732-1972). In this book was a Frederick Fisher (Son of Frederick Fisher). In 1850 he was in Fayette County, Tennessee. Several years after the book was published I found that after his wife died in Tennessee he went to Lawrence County, Arkamsas to live with his children who had preceded him. One of his children lived in Sharp County immediately west of Lawrence County. One of his sons was a Dr. in Lawrence County and fought in the civil war. He practiced in several counties in that area of Arkansas. He had a grandson who was a dentist in Smithville (Sharp County) in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I got this information from some Lawrance and Sharp County Historical book but can't remember the name of it. It may have been Goodspeed but I am not sure.
If you determine this is your Fisher line I can supply you with MUCH geneological information.
Note: I am 85 years old and my memory isn't what it once was but the name William Green Fisher seems to "ring a bell".

I have had some success in using Google Earth to locate actual properties described on some early Robertson County land surveys. For instance, I have located the plantations of William Yates, Daniel Holeman and Joseph Payne whose plantations were located in the center of Cross Plains. See

http://holeman.org/images/crossplains_outline.jpg

I would like to continue to build out the map of early plantations and grants but need additional surveys to work with. If you have scans (preferred) or transcripts of metes and bounds surveys in Robertson County that you would be willing to share I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

If you have Google Earth and would like a copy of the .kmz file that I created for this purpose feel free to ask, but please send me an email.

All the Best
Don Holeman

Thomas may have had a brother by the name of Richard.
Since Thomas died young in 1840 Robertson Co, TN this has been a hard line to prove. He married Marena Simmons and they had two sons before his death. John E. born 1838 and William Jefferson born Jan 1840.
PLEASE, any help would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Wilma Liles

Annie Hays Fiser (1774-1867) of Robertson County, TN

I am trying to find the parents of my 4X grandmother, Annie (Hays) Fiser (1774-1867). She married Henry Fiser ca 1807 probably in Robertson County, TN. They had 3 sons: Pleasant Idell, Willis Andrew, and Archibald J. Fiser. The Hays and Henry Fiser families lived a few miles west of Springfield on the old Springfield-Port Royal road, which is today Kinney's School Road. The Fiser family migrated from Robertson County, TN west to Henry County and Weakley County, TN about 1832 along with the families of Samuel Hays (1791-1875) and David Hays (1790-1858). The relationship of Samuel and David Hays to Annie Hays Fiser is unknown. They may have been younger brothers of Annie, or possibly her sons from an earlier marraige to a Hays, but no evidence has been found to support this. Annie, Samuel, and David were all buried in Powell Cemetery in Weakley County, TN. I have hit a brick wall trying to find Annie's parents, and tracing the family back before 1805 when they first appeared in the Robertson County Court records, so any suggestions, help will be appreciated!
I am seeking information on the following family:

Buckner JUSTICE (b. 1780, VA) m. Elizabeth NANNY 04 Feb 1806 in Rutherford, North Carolina.

Children of Buckner and Elizabeth JUSTICE:

1. Mary JUSTICE (b. 1806, Warren Co., KY, d. 1845)
2. Thomas Buckner JUSTICE (b. abt 1808 in Rutherford Co., NC)
3. Robert Worth JUSTICE (b. abt 809 in Robertson Co., TN)
4. Uriah Howard JUSTICE (b. abt 1811 in Robertson Co., TN)
5. Elizabeth JUSTICE (b. 1818, Warren Co., KY)

I strongly suspect that Thomas Buckner JUSTICE is my 3rd Great Grandfather, Thomas B. JUSTICE, who married Lucinda F. Beecham in Allen County, Kentucky.

I have found the family name spelled JUSTIS, JUSTIC, and JUSTICE in various records.

Thank you.

Seeking information on Sarah, wife of Samuel Pearson Jr. Samuel Pearson Jr. was b. 16 Mar 1797 in New Hope Monthly Meeting, Greene Co, TN. Several of his children (Lawson and Richmond) were b. in Robertson Co, TN. Samuel's wife Sarah was b. 1802 in KY and died before 1875 as she is not listed in any of his estate papers probabted in Bibb Co, AL in 1877. Sarah was alive with the family in the 1850 Bibb Co, AL census. Seven of their 10 children were living with them, but three other of their children were living with Theophilus Miller's family. I have not discovered Sarah's maiden name or any information about her family. Any help appreciated. Will exchange information.

Warrens, early 1800's

Hi,
I would like to correspond with some descendants of Jesse Warren who was in Robertson Co during the early 1800's....Briefy, what I am researching is a family of Warrens first mentioned in Edgecombe Co NC 1775, Thomas, John, Daniel, Henry and Willis, most of these guys are in Lincoln Co Tn by about 1815...Daniel Warren was in Sumner Co in 1806..He is associated with a Stith Mead in Lincoln Co Tn. prior to 1820, I noticed this Jesse names a son Stith Mead, am wondering about that, any connection to the Stith Mead of Lincoln CO?

I also noticed that a son of Jesse Warren, named Seibert Asher enlisted in 1814 for the Tn Militia in Fayetteville Tn, this is located in Lincoln CO.

One other thing is I have a Peter Warren b. 1795 Va. (this from 1850 Lincoln Co census), wife is a Nancy tho, he is in Lincoln Co from 1820-1850 when he dissappears? Anyone have any info on Jesse sons Peter, his whereabouts during those years?

The Thomas of 1775 Edgecombe Co NC (his first mention there) is m. to a Sarah, and they are gone right before the 1790 census, have wondered if he is the one who came to Robertson Co.??? I haven't been able to find anything on this family....But, I do know that my Warrens came thru the Robertson/Davidson/Sumner Co area straight due south to Lincoln Co Tn between about 1800 and 1815..

Any info appreciated somuch,
Cindy

Since I first posted my message, I have been able to find a brother of James Roland Cooksey and also his Mother's first name, but am at a dead end again.

What I have found so far:

1900 Census
Roberstson County

Addie Cooksey (Head of house)
Born 1863
Birthplace: Tennessee

Members in household:
Joe B Cooksey age 13
Florence M Cooksey age 10
Lula Cooksey age 8 (actually has her listed as Lewis F.)
Marshall Johnson age 24 (has listed as Morrison, but it's wrong) he's a son-in-law
Lena M Johnson age 18 (daughter of Addie, wife of Marschall)

I find Joe B. Cooksey again in 1920 Census:

Joseph B Cooksey age 33 head of household
Lula R Cooksey age 27 wife
John B Cooksey age 7
Rebecca R Cooksey age 6
George H Cooksey age 4
Josie L Cooksey age 2

Willam Lankford age 18 (half brother, and I believe he is Lula R Cooksey's half brother, not Joseph's)

If any of these names are familiar or anyone know's Addie Cooksey's maiden name, I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

Would also like to know the connection with Lankford's to the Cooksey's.
There is already one connection that I know of. James Roland Cooksey's wife, Maggie Farmer, whose grandfather is George Farmer, married a Susan M. Langford, who was the daughter of John D. Langford and Mary Bennett.

Hessy Tate first married a John Sevier and the day she divorced him she married a Lain. The mystery surrounds the birth of Hessy and her first marriage. Her marriage date would mean that she would be very young when she married John Sevier. A John Sevier was living with a Frank Tate according to the census records. Hessy Tate Lain had a son that was named Frank Lain, my wife's father. I have a copy of her first marriage certificate to John Sevier, a copy of her divorce record and her marriage certificate to the second marriage, Mr. Lain, Frank Lain's father.
