Rockwood Alumni Reunion - June 8 -14

Close-knit Rockwood alumni reunite

By JENNIFER RAYMOND

jraymond@roanecounty.com

Graduates of Rockwood High School will get a chance to come together this summer to reminisce about their days as a Rockwood Tiger with fellow classmates.

The sixth annual Rockwood High School Reunion will be June 8-14 at Rockwood First Baptist Church’s lake property.

“Anybody that went to school in Rockwood is invited, whether they graduated or not,” said Wayne Pugh, 1955 graduate and member of the RHS classmates steering committee.

Several in the committee have maintained contact over the years and decided to try and get several of the graduating classes together.

“You are meeting people you haven’t seen in 50 years,” Pugh said.

The reunions started out as a get-together of graduating classes of the 1950s and grew to include everyone because it garnered so much interest.

“It came about because Wayne had a dream,” Margaret “Mickey” Hickey-Shumate said.

Last year, about 400 to 500 people showed up during the weeklong event.

People come from all over.

“It has renewed our interest in this little town at the foot of the mountains,” Hickey-Shumate said.

Hickey-Shumate said it brings a lot of people back to the city and reminds them of times they had forgotten.

“We forget how fortunate we were to be born here,” she said.

The main reason for the reunion is simply to be together.

“At night when you think of the people you love, I think of these people,” Hickey-Shumate said.

Judy Giles joked, “I can’t get over how much we liked each other still.”

Mary Alexander Kau, class of ’56, added, “It’s just fun. I wouldn’t see these people during the normal course of time.”

Each year the committee makes phone calls, sends out e-mails and as many invitations as they can afford, about 1,500, but rely heavily on word of mouth.

“It’s like grass roots,” Kau said.

At this year’s event, the classes of 1969, 1959 and 1949 will hold their class reunions.

Lunch, catered by Junior’s Restaurant, will be served at 1 p.m. June 13.

A registration fee of $20 is needed to pay for the cost of the lunch.

“We break bread together,” Pugh said.

Kau has been gathering information on the graduated classes from 1920 to 1970, with help from Patsy Pierce, who graduated in 1944.

They are planning to make a list of everyone in those classes and name the valedictorian and salutatorian of each graduating class.

“To honor the brains,” Kau said.

At the reunion, they will also be honoring the 1976 Tennessee Champion Class A football team, Pugh said, as well as the 1947 team.

“It was a great team and there’s not many of them left,” he added.

A scholarship fund has also been set up by the group.

Last year, they presented a $500 scholarship to a Rockwood High School graduating senior.

This year they will present a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior.

An auction will also be held with proceeds going toward the purchase of folding chairs to be used at the next reunions.

They will have donated goods, handmade stools and chairs and paintings in the auction.

To register or for more information, contact Pugh at 354-4451 or visit their Web sites at www.orgsites.com/tn/rockwoodhighschoolclassmates or groups.yahoo.com/group/rockwoodtnclassmates.

Brenda, if you are researching the Morris and Callison family of Roane Co., TN, then you must be descended from James Morris, son of Richard and Jane Callison Morris. I have info on lines of Richard and Jane and would love to share. Marilyn Hansen gneolog@aol.com

Dear Glenda,

Have your line in my Bacon's. Josiah J. is what I have for the name Elijah Josiah Bacon, who married Mary Tolliver. Josiah was son of Allen Stoke"s" not Stoker, Bacon. He was son of Drury Allen Bacon and his first wife, Mary (Polly) Stokes, daughter of Allen Stokes. Allen Stokes Bacon married Elizabeth Jackson, daughter of Josiah Jackson and Susannah Fuqua. Allen S. Bacon raised a large family in Roane County (11 children, but I don't know if all survived to adulthood.)

Drury Allen Bacon was the son of Col. Lydall Bacon and his wife, Mary Allen. Mary Allen's brother Drury Allen is likely the namesake for her son.

Does this help you?
JG

This is my husband's line and I have corresponded for several years with other Rowden researchers. I was given this info by one of them who found it in either a family Bible or family documents. I have it somewhere in my records who provided me with this info and will try to locate that, if you would like to have it. My source has been very reliable, so I have no reason to doubt them, as the other documentation that they have provided (other dates, graves, etc.) has been factual. Good luck in your continued research and let me know if I may assist you further. Sharon Tucker (ST316@aol.com)

Your Robert Gallion was my father's brother (George Tipton Galyon sr.). Their parents were Reese Franklin and Fannie Mae Vinson Galyon. My own father thought his father's name was Robert and I think that was because Reese went by the nickname of "Little Bob" probably because his father's name was Robert Franklin Galyon.

I do have a photograph of "Reese Franklin Galyon" and his wife Fannie Mae Vinson. Fannie's photo looks to me like she was about 18 years old at the time while Reese's photo was taken ca. 1916. Send me an email at redvdub1@aol.com and I will send you the photographs. I would also be interested to know what you have re photos of the family.

George Tipton Galyon jr.

The marriage record has her as Lois Branham. I'm looking for her parents. There appears to have been another Lois Branham in Roane Co., TN who married a Robinson in 1829. I don't know which one or if either one is the daughter "Lowis" mentioned in Benjamin Branham's will dated Oct 1822.

I’m searching for the identity of the parents of my gr-gr- grandfather, Alfred Evans. He married Mary Margaret Lovelace/Loveless on 8-10-1841 in Fayette Co., IL. They were both born in TN. She was born in Knoxville, TN. I don’t know which county in TN he was born. I’ve been searching for Alfred’s parents for a long time. Does anyone know who his parents might be? I have been concentrating on Overton Co., Fentress Co.,or Roane Co. TN simply because there seems to be some connection there. I’d appreciate any help that you could provide.

Barbara Trueblood Berardi
Thanks you so much for the email. Clementine "Tiny" East and Jack East were my great grandparents. I never knew them but my aunts talked about them alot.
They were not fond of either of them, but especially did not like John "Jack" East. They said he used to run foxes all night and sleep during the day. He was very stingy, they said. When my grandfather, Joe East grew up he had to buy his "Freedom" because as his father reasoned, he was losing a farm hand.
I would love to have copies of the documents you described and hear more about your grandmother. My name is Jack East and My son is Jack East Jr.
Jack East
20782 Forestwood Drive
Strongsville, OH 44149
216-574-8973 (work)
440-238-0493 (Home)

I am a decendent of the James R.(Robert) Crow that married Armedia Hassler, mention on page 3 of the Hassler family record. It seems within a few years after James R. Crow married Armedia, he married a widow named White. Did Armedia and James Robert have children, and what happened to Armedia after the apparent divorce?
Thanks,
Don Crowe

I just found your post. I am a decendant of James Crow. I was born in Roane County, TN. My father added the e to the Crow name. He was born Thomas Earnest Crow and born in Roane County too.
