Am working on the most frustrating parts of my genealogy research - my grandfather's family. Here is what I know of the line:

Melinda Davis Simmons - (me) - b. 12/11/1957 - Parkersburg, WVa.
Father: Evan Garland Davis - b. 9/21/1920 - Petros, TN

Father: Sam Davis - b. 2/22/1892 - Roane Cty, TN
Mother: Willie E Foster - b. 11/23/1902 - Petros, TN
(My great-grandmother was a Roberts - Ida
Ann (Lewis Foster) - grand-daughter of
William Monroe Roberts)

Some of my dad's research before he died - coupled with some family "stories" led him to believe that Sam's mother was a woman named Samantha Clowers - who died when Sam was about 5 and that his father - who might have been Jim or Houston or something like that - married again and had more children.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?
I am/have researched all of the above surnames. All of these surnames have descendants in Roane County at one time or another. On some families, I have a lot of info, on others, very little. I would love to hear from anyone who is/was researching any of these surnames.

The one I am working on right now is the Leffew line. Most interested in anyone with info regarding Joseph Leffew, who married Mary Etta Jones. Joseph is listed under Jerusha Leffew (Sterling's widow) in the 1880 Roane Census as her son. But, he was born to late to have belonged to Sterling. Quite a mystery for me and would love to know about anyone with ties to this line.

Wright Family / Brenson (?)

I am searching for my great grandmothers parents and siblings who were named Wright and were from Harriman Tennessee. My great-grandmother's name was Bessie Wright b) 1914, she had a sister named Dealy (sp?) and a sister named Elsie who married a man by the name of Cole Harmon. There were approximately 10 children. I am also looking for the father of Bessie's daughter, named Mildred "Mickey" Lee Brenson (ABT 1932-1935). His name was never given to the family and both (Bessie and Mildred) passed away without giving up the info. Mildred was raised for a time by the Wright family. Anyone know these people or this family? Hard to fill in the blanks so, any help would be appreciated.

He appears with Nancy and family in the 1850 US Census but not in 1860. Does someone know when he died and where he is buried. Also interested in date of death for Nancy. Will glady share my findings.

Mecklenburg Co., NC to Roane Co., TN

My ancestro, Michael Baker, arrived in Roane County, TN in 1805 (or soon before). At that time, his appears to be the only Baker household in the county. I don't know the maiden name of his wife, Frances/Fanny, but they apparently moved to Roane County from North Carolina. In those days, it was the norm for people to move in groups of family and/or acquaintances, but with the little information I have it's difficult to determine who else might have migrated to Roane Co. with my ancestors.

So...what I'm interested in knowing is if there are other researchers whose families may have come to Roane Co. from Mecklenburg Co., NC around the 1805 time period, or earlier. If so, it might be possible to determine a pattern or group of families that may have migrated together to Tennessee.

Thanks,
Randall Baker

Abston, McElroy

I'm hoping that someone can help me on these surnames. My husband's grandparents were Stephen Robert Abston and Maude M. McElroy. I have "Rob" in the 1900 census in Roane county, Tennessee (Civil District 13); he was born in January 1891 - his parents were Charles Alexander Abston and Celia I. Hedgecoth. I THINK I have Maude also in the 1900 census of Roane county, Tennessee; but I'm not certain. In this census I found a Andy (Andrew?) McElroy married to a Becky (Rebecca according to the 1910 census) with the following children: James G., born June 1883; Andrew J., born September 1886; Wylie M., born 1890; Mande M., born September 1893 (this is the one that I think may be Maude); Emma E., born June 1895; Ethel and Athel (twins - a girl and boy) born November 1897 and Birtie, born October 1899. This family also lived in Civil District 13, Roane county Tennessee.

In the 1930 census "Rob's" name is listed as Robert S. Abston with a wife Maude M. In this census are listed four daughters - the youngest being my husband's mother, Thelma Nadine Abston.

Is there anyone who can tell me if I have the right McElroy family? The 1930 census of Roane county, Tennessee claims that there were no McElroy's in the area; so I am assuming that they moved from the area by the time of the 1930 census.

Mr. James S. Evans was born in Rhea County Tenn., May 17, 1847, died Nov 30, 1913, aged 66 years 6 mo. 13 days. He was married to Deliah Hinds Jan. 23, 1875. To this union there were born four children, three girls and one boy, all of whom with his wife survive him.
Mr. Evans was a man who never sought notoriety, but in a humble way tried to do his duty to his family and friends. He made no display of great deeds, but as some have remarked "He lived his religion" and thus made many friends who will sadly miss him in the walks of life. Mr. Evans never belonged to any clubs, secret orders or charitable associations and hence he never spent and of his evenings away from home but always, when his days labor was over, could be found at home with his family, who will miss him more because of his constant presence.
May the God of all grace comfort the heart of all who are bereft, and may they be kept in the way of life until the end of the journey brings them at last to the haven of rest where we'll never say good bye.

"Mr. James S. Evans." The Rockwood Times, Rockwood TN, Thursday, 4 Dec 1913, Vol. XXXIII, No. 48.

James I. Green, b. Pr. Ed. Co VA, d. Davidson co TN 1834

James I. (sometimes read as a J) Green, moved to TN in October 1803. He was serving as a delegate from Roane co to the TN Constitutional Convention, when he became ill and d. on 29 Aug 1834. He had previously served in the TN General Assembly from 1827-1833, from Roane co. He is in the Roane 1830 census on p25A, with a James B. GREEN, on the next line, and Don Felix GREEN, 6 lines away but on p.26, both of the right age to have been sons. Interviews with James appear in "Genealogical Information From The Western Methodist" compiled by Jonathan K. T. Smith, copyrighted in 2003, which gave his father's name as Thomas, his birthplace as Prince Edward co VA, his two oldest brothers as Berryman and Thomas. Berryman d. in Halifax co VA in 1825, Thomas in 1828 in Prince Edward co. Thomas GREEN Sr. is my 4th g.g.f. I would like to fill in the large hole I have on James Independence Green's family. He married Patsy Medley in Halifax co VA in 1796, but his children's names are unknown. His mother was Lucy DAVIS. Does anyone have this family in their records? I'd be happy to share information as I've been researching my GREEN family for over 40 years. This James is NOT the James who married Susan Rowden in 1809 as that James was still alive in the 1850 Miller co MO census as was Susan.

HELP!!!! Still trying to locate any information on my ggg-aunt Lydia Snow after a twenty year search. She was born abt 1878 in Morgan County to Benjamin T. & Mary Jane Honeycutt Snow. Her brother Thomas Snow settled in Rockwood so I have hopes that maybe she married someone in Roane county. I had been told she may have married a Mr. Bain although I have found no records anywhere to verify that.

Hope to find any Honeycutt or Snow researchers/cousins that may be able to help solve this mystery as where she went & what happed to her. Would be grateful for any data.

John WOODY,V m. Elizabeth FARMER, both b. 1802

I'm searching for information about John Woody V and Elizabeth Farmer, who may be the parents of my wife's great-grandfather, Elijah M. Woody. What is known so far:

1. John Woody V is the son of John Woody IV and Mary McGowan. He was born on March 16, 1802 in Blount Co TN.

2. It is believed that Elizabeth was born in 1802 in TN, but I don't know who her parents were. There was another Elizabeth Farmer who was born on 9/13/1822 in Roane Co TN to Elisha Ward Farmer and Martha Jane Preston, but she married William D. Woody on Jan 15 1846 in Roane Co. It's possible that given the 20 year gap in the birthyears of the two Elizabeth Farmers, the one I'm searching for is an aunt of the one who married William D. Woody.

3. John V and Elizabeth were married on January 28, 1824, in Roane Co TN. I don't have any source information that confirms the identity of their children.

4. Elijah M. Woody was born around 1841 in Roane Co TN. He later migrated to Howell Co MO, where he served in the Civil War and married, raised a family, died and is buried.

5. I don't know when or where John V and Elizabeth died or were buried.

I don't have access to the 1850 US census for Roane Co., which might provide an entry for John IV and Elizabeth showing their children living with them at that time.

Any information or leads about this family would be appreciated.

John Reid
P.O.
Seeing information on this Greene County family. Their daughter, Sarah Johnson, b. 3-3-1815 married my great-grandfather Rev. Samuel Wilson of Roane County on 10--8-1854, Paint Rock Valley. She was his second wife.Much of the information I have is that this couple were from Greene County, but in looking this am, in one of my seldom used files, I found a list of the siblings of Sarah Johnson Wilson, daughter of the above couple. This same file states that they were from the Stockton Valley of Roane/Monroe County.
1. Joab Johnson
2. Alfred Johnson
3. William Johnson
4.
Deed from Gamaliel Bailey to Louisa Randolph

I believe I descend from Louisa Bailey Randolph. I am trying to find the deed mentioned in the below letter. If anyone has any more information about this family or this deed, or may be related to any of these people please contact me. I know that some of them eventually end up in Monroe Co. KY, where my Bailey line is. I believe Louisa Bailey to be a cousin and her father Gamaliel to be a grt. Uncle.
Thanks in Advance Jeanette Bailey in Mo. jbailey 1 4 8 @ com cast . net
Hon. John C. Daves,
214 Chamber of Commerce,
Baltimore, Md.

Mr. dear Mr. Daves:- In the past two years I have found
some data on one of my ancestors which I feel sure makes
him an eligible ancestor for membership in the Society of
the Cincinnati. Being a member on my Hill ancestry, I am
anxious to qualify one of my cousins and have him become a
member of the North Carolina Society, and write to submit
my findings and to ask you to advise me whether my cousin
is eligible to membership in the North Carolina Society
or not.

In the Department of Archives, Virginia State Library, is
the following record:

“Virginia Continental Army Lands.”
February 15, 1822.

“Roll of Officers of the sixteen Virginia Regiments
of the Continental Army, who received land bounty
in the States of Kentucky and Ohio.”

Among them, under lists of Lieutenants, Ensigns & Coronets,
is
William Randolph, allotted 4,000 acres.

Following the lists is the certificate:

“I certify that the above is a full and correct copy of a
large printed circular, now in this library, entitled,
“Virginia Continental Army Lands” “Dated Feb. 15, 1822.”

Morgan P. Robinson, Archivist.

July 15, 1915,
Virginia State Library.”

As you probably know land warrants were issued under act
of 1779, as follows-
For three years service- Colonel 5,000 acres
- Lt. Col. 4,500 “
- Major 4,000 “
- Captain 3,000 “
- Subalterns 2,000 “
- Non Coms. 200 “
- Privates 100 “

[page two]

Mr. J.C.D. #2

Lt. William Randolph was granted 4,000 acres, which shows
he served over 3 years, and had rank not lower than
Lieutenant. This is states as he is listed among the
Lieutenants, Ensigns and Coronets. Neither of the latter
could be issued the amount issued to Lt. Randolph as shown by the records filed with the report on Lt. Randolph.

Lt. William Randolph was my great great grandfather,
emigrating to Surry County, N.C., where he married my great
great grandmother Louisa Bailey. They emigrated to
Tennessee settling in Roane County, where in 1809 Lt.
Randolph purchased land in this Roane County from his
brother John Randolph. In 1815 Lt. Randolph sold his land
om Roane County and returned to Surry County, N.C. Just
before the sale of said land in Roane County in 1815,
Louisa Bailey Randolph died and is buried in this Roane
County, Tenn. Sarah Randolph, daughter of Lt. Wm. & Louisa
(Bailey) Randolph, married in 1814, Roane County, Tenn.
Samuel Sumpter Owens and were the parents of Martha Susan
Owens who married John Kendrick, who were the parents of
Margaret Amanda Kendrick who married Isaac Alexander Hill
and were the parents of Cap Kendrick Hill. After the death
of Lt. Wm. Randolph’s wife Louisa in 1815, he returned to
Surry County, N.C., where in 1816 he married as his second
wife, Dorothy Poindexter, widow (nee Bailey) sister of his
first wife Louisa. This is proven by deeds to lands in
Surry County, N.C. which show they were Dorothy Bailey
Poindexter’s part of lands she inherited from her father
Gamaliel Bailey, said lands being in “Bailey’s Bottom”.
Deeds in Surry County, N.C. are signed by both William and
Dorothy Randolph. About 1848 the part of Surry County in
which Lt. Wm. & Dorothy Randolph lived was cut off into
Forsyth County, N.C., where Lt. William Randolph lived at
the time of his death about 1848-49.

From the above, I trust you can accept an application for
membership in the N.C. Society of the Cincinnati. I am
anxious for my cousin to join the N.C. Society, first
because I am a member, second Lt. Randolph lived and died
in N.C., and Tennessee, which was formerly a part of N.C.

I will very much appreciate your passing on this matter and
advising me, which I assure you will be very much
appreciated.

With kind regards and best wishes, I am,

Cordially yours,

Cap Kendrick Hill

CKH/K

Lt. Wm. Randolph is in the line accepted by the Colonial
Dames for membership of my mother Mrs. Margaret Amanda
Kendrick Hill, #2303.

==================================================
Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
All rights reserved.

Archivist:
Transcription and scan by G.
I am trying to locate the names and birthdates of the children, born in Roane County Tennessee of Nelson and Fanny Thorp Luttrell. They were married in Farquir Co VA in 1802, and it is possible that one or two of their children could have been born in Virginia prior to the Luttrell family moving to Roane County, TN. Knowing when the family left Virginia, or located in Roane County TN would be helpful, too. Thanks.

On Jan 10, 1821 in Roane County, TN, Daniel VANN married Mary Patsey "Polly" McCOMB, daughter of Jacob Shaw McCOMB and Sarah EVANS. I'd like any and all information on any of these families but particularly the ancestry of Daniel VANN.

Jeremiah BUCHANAN and his wife, Sarah JONES, moved to Roane County about 1801 as their son, Jeremiah, Jr., was born there in March, 1802. Jeremiah and 3 of his sons fought in the War of 1812 and Jeremiah was killed in Dec. 1813 but Sarah continued to live in Roane County and raised the children there until her death in 1821. Many of the children moved to Illinois shortly after her death but many of them remained in TN, especially the girls. Would appreciate any information on this family, especially how Sarah supported the family and her descendants through the daughters.

At teh tme of the 1870 Census Jacob resided in Prestonville, present day Roddy, in Rhea County.

Amanda Minerva Bowles/Boles b. 20 Sep. 1853 was one of Jacob and Jane'd children.
His other children by Jane were Margaret b. abt 1854
Thomas b. 1856 d. 1911 (I think)

By his first wife Nancy Jeans b. abt 1810, Jacob had
David J. b. 1835 Greene County
Sarah b. abt 1839 Greene County
James b. abt 1841 Greene County
George b. abt 1842
William b. abt 1843
Mary b. abt 1845
John b. abt 1847
Robert b. abt 1849
Polly b. abt 1849
Martha b. abt 1851
Samuel b. abt 1852

These dates are estimates calculated from Census records. And there is some question about who Martha and Samuel's father was since Jacob and Nancy were divorved in 1850 and Nancy returned ot Greene County to raise her children among family - hers and Jacob's. Jacob lists his children as living in his household in the Rhea County 1860 census and Nancy lists some of the same children living in her home in Greene County so I'm uncertain where their children ultimately married and settled down.

I've been told by that some of Jacob's children wound up in Roane County but I don't know which ones. Any assistance would be appreciated.

My direct email address is rwallace15@comcast.net

Bob

Thomas L. Ball, born between 1800-1810, and married to Dorthy Cravens, appears in the 1840 Roane County, TN, census with four of his children. Dorthy BALL is listed in the Roane County 1850 census as head of household with five children, the youngest one aged 8. The oldest, John L., has married Sarah Jane White and established his own household. What has happened to Thomas? Did he die, and was he buried in Roane County, or did he go with many others to the California gold rush?
Will someone be so kind to help put the pieces together?

James H. Keylon (aka Keelin) m. Rhoda Fuller in Roane Co., TN, 8/8/1872. They migrated to Indian Territory, Chickasaw Nation (OK) by 1900 and their daughter, Laura Bell Keylon, married Aljain (aka Algin, Alvin) Jiles about 1901.

J.H. Keylon (aka Keelin) m. Mary (Haggard) Ellis in Roane Co., TN, 1/10/1889. They are living in Rhea Co., TN in 1900. According to an earlier message board posting, Cora P. Ellis, daughter of Mary Ellis married William Morgan Giles. They are in Meigs Co., TN 1900, Rhea Co., TN 1910 and Roane Co., TN 1920-1930.

I am researching the Jiles surname and have wondered how and/or why Aljain ended up in OK. His father, Benjamin Franklin Giles/Jiles, and siblings left GA after 1880 and were in LA before 1900 via Calhoun Co., AL in 1887. I do not know if or how the two James Keylons are kin or if and how William Giles and Aljain Jiles or kin. It may all be coincidental but seems a bit suspect to me. If there was a connection, perhaps that is how Aljain met his Keylon wife to be and ended up in OK.

If anyone can add anything at all concerning the above named families, it would certainly be appreciated.

Thank you,
Audrey
I am looking for all the information I can get on Nathaniel Mason. It is suggested that he may have been a son of George Mason but it has never been proven one way or another.

I have the following information about Nathaniel Mason.

"Daniel and Nathaniel Mason who were probably brothers, were the first of that name in Roane County. Their relationship to Col. George Mason has not been proven, but according to Goodspeed's History of East Tennessee "Daniel (1770?80??1839) came to Fort South West Point as a young man from the Potomac River in either VA or MD.

Willing to share any information on these families......

I have been piecing together the relationships of my relatives that are buried in Oral Cemetery, Roane Co, Tennessee.

Families that intermarried frequently are:

Smith, Cardwell, Babb, Monger/Mounger, Goodwin, Pickle, Simpson, Fritts and Duff

Popular given names for these families are:
Anthony, Wayne, Amos, Columbus , Lafayette, Blaine, Vaught, Isaac
Joanna, Cornelia, Ollie, Margaret Jane, Malinda, Eveline, Volena (Volina), Ida, Iris

As well as the popular names of the era: William, Thomas, John (Doswell, Hershel), James, Sarah (Sally), Mary (Polly) Jane, Virginia, Ruth

Other Given names that appear are:
Eblen, Stout, Cox, Bunn (Burns), Brooks, Carter, Green, Allen, Waller.

Many of these families later moved to Loudon Co, Tennessee.

Then main family that I am researching is the Simpson line, Isaac P. Simpson b 1799 Boston, MA son of Isaac Parker Simpson and Sarah Stetson (Stutson) of Boston, MA.

Somehow, Isaac left Boston after 1829 and is found in Jefferson Co (may have been in Grainger Co before this). Many of the families that are in this Cemetery originated from Virginia and the Carolinas.

Please email me: denisejames54@sbcglobal.net
