Roane County Families

Surnames: Aikens, Barnett, Buck, Carmack, Carter, Clark, Cofer, Collett, Cooper, Dalton, Evans, Filyaw, Fleemon, Hickey, Jones, Kendrick, Kirby, Knox, Lawson, Leffew, Lewis, Miles, Mitchell, Nealon, Pope, Smith, Teague, Thomas, True, Vitatoe, Warner, West, Wilhoit
I am/have researched all of the above surnames. All of these surnames have descendants in Roane County at one time or another. On some families, I have a lot of info, on others, very little. I would love to hear from anyone who is/was researching any of these surnames.

The one I am working on right now is the Leffew line. Most interested in anyone with info regarding Joseph Leffew, who married Mary Etta Jones. Joseph is listed under Jerusha Leffew (Sterling's widow) in the 1880 Roane Census as her son. But, he was born to late to have belonged to Sterling. Quite a mystery for me and would love to know about anyone with ties to this line.

Thanks so much for the information. I am just beginning my search and I appreciate what you have sent me. Our name is Collett. I think over the years the e was added by someone. That is the correct James Otis Collett. Also, Clara Collett was an Eakins, later changed somehow to Aikens by some, according to her. Her mother was a Pelfrey, Eliza Jane, if I am not mistaken. There is a lot of Colletts in Roane County

I have emailed a response to this post, but also including here for other researchers who might be interested at a later date:

Kathy,
James Otis Collette was born on 10/13/1901 and died on 11/10/1958 at the age of 57. His parents were Charles Collette and Mollie Vitatoe. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetary in Rockwood. All of this came from the Booth Funeral Home Book.
The name Collette shows up two ways in Roane County, with and without the last E. They are related somehow, but haven't exactly figured all of them out. I didn't find a Clara Collette in the Booth book though.

The other listings that would be significant for you are:

Probably the mother:
Collette, Mollie; b. 08/22/1880, d. 03/26/1964 at the age of 83. Parents listed as: Joseph Vitatoe and Elizabeth Hayes. Buried in Odd Fellows Cemetary, Rockwood.

Sister:
Collette, Reba Bernice, b. 07/03/1905 and d. 10/12/1960 at the age of 55. Parents listed as Charles Collett and Molly Vitatoe, buried in Oak Grove.

Brother:
Collette, Edward, no date born listed, d. 11/15/1972. Parents listed as Charles Collette and Mollie Vitatoe. Buried in Smyrna Cemetary, Rhea County.

Son:
Collett, John Andrew, b. 02/02/1931, d. 04/21/1952 at the age of 21. Parents listed as James Otis Collett and Clara Mae Aikens, buried in Oak Grove Cemetary.

1920 Roane County Census:

Charlie Collett, head, Rents, m w 43 married, can read and write, born in Tennessee
Mollie, wife, f w 34, cannot read or write, born in Kentucky
Jim, son m w 18, single, can read and write, born in Tennessee
Reba, dau f w 15, single, in school, can read and write, born in Tennessee
Clara, dau f w 10, single, in school, can read and write, born in Tennessee
Charles, son m w 7, single, not in school, born in Tennessee
Catherine, dau f w 6, single, not in school, born in Tennessee
Edward, son m w (either a 2 and 11/12 or a 1 and 11/12, hard to read age), single, born in Tennessee
Robert, son m w 9/12, single, born in Tennessee
Vitatoe, Elizabeth, mother-in-law, f w 80, widowed, can read, cannot write, born in Tennessee.

Right now, that is all I have. I believe these are also relatives of ours, but haven't connected them yet. The name Collett and Vitatoe are in our Warner side of the family.

I am trying to search for Colletts in the Roane County area also. My grandfather was James Otis Collett and he was married to Clara Aikens (Eakins). He died in Roane County in 1958 I think. If you have any info on this please email me. Thank you. Kathy Collett Smith

Tina:
I am researching the names: Buck - Cooper - Miles - Warner.
I knew that my gggrandparents, Alexander Miles and Mahaley Mathis were married in Roane County in 1849. There were 4/5 children born of this union. Don't have a lot of info about them.

Also researching the other three, but had not idea there was any connection in Roane County. Buck - Isaac Buck and Julia Ann Wilmoth. Cooper - Keziah Cooper and Wilson Wilmoth.
Warner - William Warner and Martha Caroline Peden.

I would appreciate hearing from you. My email address is
jkjames@oio.net.

Thanks very much.

I will have to look in my records for those names, as they do not sound familiar right off. The Buck line actually did not originate here - and only one family that I know of moved to Roane County. Morgan County is more their territory. I have a few names in that line and will check it when I get home. As far as the Warner lines, I have quite a few names there and will have to look at them. I will get back to you in the next couple of days.

Okay, William Warner - at least the one I have - married four times. None of those was the woman you have. However, there was another William Warner in Roane County in the late 1800's who ran the Iron Mines here in town. He was not originally from here and cannot remember exactly where he was from. What is interesting about this William is that he also had a son named Willard (as did mine). They were in Rockwood at the same times, so it was tricky figuring out who was which... I'd be happy to try to find out if this is the William you are searching for. Do you have any other info on him?

As for Alexander Miles, I don't have much on the Miles line - but Mahaly sounds indian doesn't it? There was a John Miles who was a Cherokee Indian, full blooded. I'll have to look up this Alexander and see what can be found on his parentage.

Keziah Cooper sounds very familiar, but don't find her in my database, so any info I have is not verified as yet. I know I haven't been any help to you! Sorry.
