I am looking for any information on Amanda Elmina Roberts Carney (b. 22 Jul 1873, d. 23 Aug 1912). Married to James T. Carney (b. 28 Oct 1873, d. 22 May 1949). Does anyone know where and when she was born? I have found several census records and can't narrow it down to one.

I am also looking for information on James Calhoun Carney (b. 12 Oct 1844, d. 12 Jan 1921) who is the father of James T. Carney. My great Aunt and Grandmother (Lois East Justice) say he was from Ireland, but I read that he was born in South Carolina. I have not found anything to support either. Any help with his origin would be greatly appreciated.

need some local Rhea county help with this tree

My niece is currently serving in the U.S. Navy and this is her lineage. I am hoping to encourage her with some information and documents about her own lineage...hoping to get back to her Civil War and possibly even Revolutionary War ancestors, but not without someone's kind help.

Martha Cook-Cooke was born June 1867, or so her census data shows in the 1900 census when she was still married to her husband, Clayton or Clayburn A. Cook who died between 1900-1910 when she shows up a widow.
1900-1920 she can be found in Pulaski County, Kentucky.

Then, in the 1930 census, I find her living with her widowed daughter, Rowena Cook-Sneed in Rhea County, Tennessee.
Her son, Cyrus Marion Cook, also moved to Rhea County, Tennessee, so it is highly likely that this is where Martha Cook died.
I am currently stone walled at the husband's line as well as Martha's. For Martha it is because I can not determine her maiden name or even when and where she married Clayton/Clayburn Cook. Some family history says that the surname originally was spelled Cooke.

Items I am willing to pay for, on behalf of my niece:
Death record
Obituary
Photo of headstone at cemetery, along with Cemetery name and location of headstone within that cemetery, for proper citation, which would make the photo a type of document.

I can be reached at MQuiltr2@aol.com

Thank you for your help, and considering the encouragement to a current patriot.

Hello. I'm from out of town and know next to nothing about Rhea Co. None the less, I am looking to find some kind of birth record for WILLIAM RILEY JOHNSON. WRJ wrote in his Civil War Penison app that he was born on Oct. 27, 1831 in Rhea Co., TN. But I have no indication who his parents are. I believe they are Bright Johnson and Nancy Hartsel Brown-Johnson. I am looking for proof of such. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
-stefanie / walflwr@aol.com

Covingtons in 1840 and 1850

Am looking for any information on the families of John and Andrew Jackson Covington. John was in Rhea co. in 1840, Andrew Jackson in 1850. I believe they were brothers.

John was born in about 1811 in TN. His wife, Nancy, was born in TN in 1804. I know of 3 children born in TN: William (1832), Elizabeth (1834), and Phebe (1840). The 1840 census shows another infant (under 5) daughter, too.

Andrew Jackson, aka Jackson, was born in about 1820 in TN. Wis wife, Rebecca, was born in about 1825 in TN. In 1850, their children were Richard (b. 1842), James M (b. 1844), William J (b. 1845), John (b. 1846), and Lorenzo D (b. 1848).

I believe that John and Jackson were two of several brothers who moved to Arkansas in the 1840s and '50s. William (b. ca. 1808) and family lived in neighboring Meigs co. I have not yet found in TN other brothers Louis (b. ca. 1824), Rufus (b. ca. 1830), and James M. (b. ca. 1823). James M. is our direct ancestor. Newspapers tell us that Jackson and Rufus were brothers. The rest is my speculation based on proximity in census records. Birth years are also very approximate, as census ages were not consistent from year to year. Any information or leads would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike

A group of Ferguson family researchers are trying to solve a mystery about where our ancestor Elias Ferguson was born.

Census reports indicate that it was in Tennessee. There are numerous online genealogies that state a Robert Ferguson III migrated to Rhea County from SC, and had a son named Elias. Elias appears in the first Rhea County Grand Jury Roll, and in early Rhea County land transactions. The only problem is THAT Elias Ferguson was likely born about 1800 and is much too young to be ours. Did he have a son or grandson named Elias?

If anyone has information on the Ferguson family of Rhea County and can shed some light, please advise. Thanks in advance.

John K. Ivey
Plano, Texas

Here's what we have documented.

1. ELIAS1 FERGUSON was born Abt. 1824 in Tennessee.
I have some limited information of the Bolles/Boles.Bowles in Rhea Co. TN. George Bolles/Boles was the brother of my 3great grandfather Jacob Boles and the son of David Bowles and Elizabeth "Betsey" Clowers of Greene Co TN.

I haven't much info on Jacob's children other than David J Boles, my 2great grandfather. I can dig out old files I have on George, but you can probably find the same information at RootsWed WorldConnect although I have accumulated some through correspondence.

I'm more than eager to swap any and all information I have.

My real grandfather was Walter Manies (born Oct., 1893), one of four sons born to John Manies and Mary Thurman in Rhea, Tennessee. After death of John Manies, their mother remarried to Robert L. Jakes of Rhea, Tennessee, and the records reflect them as stepsons. The family moved to Alabama, where Walter Manies, a coal miner, met, married, and divorced my grandmother, then moved to Kentucky and lived with the Jakes. I have been unable to find concrete information on him beyond 1920. Believe he may have started a new family in Letcher Co., Kentucky. Would appreciate any information on what happened to him, how he looked, when he died and where. My grandmother kept this secret until her death and revealed very little to my father.

Dearing Broyles.

All info I have is that her name was Sarah M. Deaing/Deron with DEARING as her last name (such as her marriage license).

I would love to figure out who her real family was, so if anyone can help I'd sure appreciate it!
ANDREW MILLER is he father of Adam Miller? Who is Abraham Miller?

1791 land grant Greene Co, TN for James Pierce adjoins Andrew Miller. Pierce & Miller families end up in Rhea Co, TN. Is Adam Miller son of Andrew? Adam's wife Elizabeth Pierce (md 1801) is daughter of James Pierce. In early days children of neighboring families often intermarried.

Estate of Adam Miller was probated 1820 Rhea Co, TN. Would like to hear from others working on Miller lines in Rhea Co, TN. I will be working on this problem on my next trip to Salt Lake City. Glad to share what I find.

Who is the Henry Miller that shows up on at least two records with Adam Miller?

By chance is there more then one Adam Miller?

I think Abraham Miller is a different line and would like to hear from others working on him and his family. If we can separate out the lines we might get further along in our researching.

Happy Hunting (^_^)

Vaughan/Vaughn family - early 1800's

Looking for proof on the birth date of Enoch Vaughan. Census records for later years show birth dates between 1814 and 1816. One source lists his birth place as Middle Valley, Hamilton County. However, since Hamilton County wasn't formed until 1819, it is probably Rhea County. Also need his parents/siblings names. Enoch married in 1839 in Texas and then moved to Arkansas where he was a minister and pastored several churches before his death in 1891. Some of his children changed the spelling of Vaughan to Vaughn. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello,
I am searching for my husbands great grandmother. I started searching for my husbands father's side (the Swafford's). I have found his family and now researching the Cherokee side.
Emma Cordelia Black was born in November, 1874 in Georgia. It is possible that her last name was shortened to black and could be listed as black---??? She is said to be full blooded Cherokee. She married James M. Swafford born in June 1865 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. Their marriage record listed them as J. M. Swafford and Cordelia Black. Relatives knew her as Delia. The partial Index to Tennessee Death Records 1914-1925 Rhea Tennessee listed her as Emma Cordelia Swafford, age 44, Date of Death 1919, County Rhea.
I was able to contact my husbands grandfather's wife in LA., who said that Emma was also called Darkey. If anyone has any information in her, or how to get more information on her, I would be much appreciated

Does anyone know if perhaps there is an online database showing Rhea County deaths/marriages for the years starting c1925 and beyond? I have requested many searches for Myrtle Majors Clayton's death/marriage dates and have not been successful. I would guess that her surname is not spelled correctly, and had hoped to have a look at any Rhea database for that period of time to perhaps just be lucky enough to find her. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Wallers in McMinn and Rhea

I am looking for a line of Wallers from Alice Viola born in 1897. I have been attempting to track her pedigree unsuccessfully. I believe her parents were William and Kittie Waller who lived in Rhea Co and appear on the 1900 census there. I believe William is the son of an Asbury and Susan Waller of McMinn Co. William was born in 1869. I believe Asbury was born in 1849 and died between 1870-80. Susan remarried to a Asa Lawson.

I am stuck on Asbury and have no idea where he came from. The area is filled with Wallers but the previous census years show no Asbury at all. I am wondering if he is really under another name in 1860. I am also looking up the lines of the spouses as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Spencer Benson Family, Sevier>Rhea>McMinn TN

Robert A Benson was born in Sevier Co, TN on Feb 11, 1796. Is Robert Benson a son of Spencer Benson, b 1755 Deleware, Revolutionary War soldier who moved to Sevier County abt 1895? His trail to Rhea County where Robert Benson's son William H Benson was born Feb 23, 1828 follows that of Spencer Benson. There seems to be unknown children in lists of Spencer and Comfort Short Benson's children. In 1850 Census Walker County, AL, Robert A Benson, Shoemaker, age 55 TN, Elizabeth, Age 45 TN and their chilldren William H 19 TN, Comfort 15 AL, Robert A 10 AL, Sarah F 8 AL, Elizabeth M 4 AL. Their oldest daughter, Martha Ann Benson, b Mar 1, 1822 Rhea Co, TN, was married Mar 7,1846 to Jesse Harris O'Rear in Walker County, AL. Robert Benson moved to Alabama just before 1835 from McMinn or Rhea Counties, TN (according to Comfort Benson's date of birth). Can anyone provide the link of Robert Benson to Spencer Benson? Any information about the Spencer Benson family would be helpful.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of maps of Rhea county that would show the Civil Dist. for the different census years? For example my great-grandfather Moses Bottomlee was found in the 1930 Census for TN, Rhea County, Civil Distrist 15, Enumeration District 86. I sure would like to know which part of Rhea County would be included in that area. I would like to be able to do this with each census record that I find.

Ogden Cemetery is located on Dayton Mountain. You take highway 30 from Dayton to the top of the mountain and turn left on Ogden Road. The cemetery is located down that road about 3 to 4 miles. Snow Falls is located to the right of highway 30 so while they are in the same general area, I would not consider them to be located close to each other. There are some Snow family members buried in the cemetery. There is an Elizabeth but her gravestone indicates that she died in August of 1876.
Anyone have all the Snow's listed there?
Phillip
Looking for info on Malinda Kennedy. Who is she? It appears that she was born abt. 1833 according to the 1860 census, but it also appears that her husband James Robertson/Roberson was dead by this time. She has living with her Tennessee E. Roberson 18, Malinda E. Roberson 16 and a James Carroll 13. Who are these people. I believe that the James Carroll is actually James C. Kennedy age 3 found in the 1850 Rhea Co. census living with Isabella Kennedy and the same goes for Malinda E. age 5 in the 1850 census and I believe that she is actually a Kennedy not a Roberson. I also believe that the Tennessee E. is actually Elizabeth A.E. Kennedy shows as age 8 in the 1850 census.

Can anyone tell me who these people are and what happened to Malinda's husband James Robertson/Roberson? Julie
Court minute entry Rhea Co, TN -- "Jeremiah Jack to Children of Adam Miller -- Deed of Gift for sundry property dated 28th September 1813 was proven by oath of Daniel Rawlings, one of the subscribing witnesses; ordered to be registered."

Does anyone know why Jeremiah Jack would be giving a gift to the children of Adam Miller? Adam Miller is my direct ancestor and I cannot find any connection to Jeremiah Jack. With a little research it looks like Jeremiah was born in MD, among his children one son was born 1770 in Berkley Co, VA, and Jeremiah may have been a King's Mountain man. Now, James Pearce, father-in-law of Adam Miller, was born in MD, lived in Berkley Co, VA, was there in 1770, and was a King's Mountain man, is that the connection???

Any help surely appreciated. Glad to swap and share.

Can anyone give me info on the cemeteries located in Evensville? My fiance' remembers one where his great grandparents are buried. He thought he got to it by taking White Flats Road, but when we went to find it, we just got lost. We don't know the name of the cemetery, but if anyone can point us in the right direction, it would be appreciated.
I am trying to find an Edward P. Hutchins in Rhea County. In 1900 he was living in the Civik District 11. in 1910 he is in the 4th District. He had a wife named Mary and 4 children, Robert, Ralph, Clarence and Frances. I think he passed away in 1915 on April 5th. The index has an unknown Hutchins recorded on this day as passing away. I am trying to locate his burial place or his correct death date if this isn't it. Does any body have any ideas? I can be reached at rhondateudhope@adelphia.net
Thank you for your time.
