Hi Rex,

Thanks for responding. I was able to find that information but never knew that Mae was adopted by John Smith. This is very interesting. Do you know anything more about Mae's mother and father?

On a side note, I believe you are my third or fourth cousin. Your mother and my mom were first cousins. (if you are who I think you are).

I would love to get in touch.

It appears you have found our Brackett line related to the Smith side of our family.
We have Nola, Rosa Lee, and others. But for the record it's James Knox Polk Brackett. Also have a Maggie Carter.
Visit the Brackett webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fritzzy/br...
AND please sign our guest book off of main page
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fritzzy/

Yes, I do. Baxter Bryson died in 1927. He was married to Mae Smith aka. daughter of (David C. Lenderman) Not many know that she was adopted by John L. Smith (there is one census he confirms step-daughter / step-son) along with her brother Lester b. 1901. They were half siblings to the Smith children Edye, Betty etc... However, they are the only full siblings. Baxter's mother was Sallie Sylvester and his father was a Bryson from Missouri.

I found a Charles Ballew living in Hot House, Cherokee, NC in 1880. He was born in 1879. His parents were Thomas and Sarah Jane Ballew. He was white.
I also found Hettie D. Anderson living in Notla, Cherokee, NC in 1900. She was born in Sept. of 1885. Her parents were Rufus H. and Martha L. Anderson. She was white. I added race because of location.

good luck

I thank you for information that you have contributed. I have all that and have looked over the widows pension and his pension for any clues. The only clue that was in his was that he was in a small area (post office)Tarriffville was where he was living this in the late 1890's. This is part of Monroe County. I would have thought this was where he would be buried in this area.I have checked all the cemeteries in that area that I know of and could find on line. The widows pension had several letters of neighbors writing letters on her behalf. The next door neighbor was a sister in law that married Joseph V.West's brother. I wanted to find his brother and possibly where he was buried. But nothing there.I keep getting good clues but brick walls spring up.
Thanks again.

Try Monroe County. I found where J.V. West's Civil War application is #1506 and Elizabeth's widow application is #4558.

They were in Monroe County at the time of his death. You can get a copy of the applications from the Tennessee State Library. It may contain a location of his burial.

http://www.tngennet.org/monroe/mon_civ_war_pen.htm

http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/military/pension023.ht...

On Findagrave.com there is a Joseph West who may be a son or grandson and should help narrow your search
Joseph West
Birth: Oct. 10, 1878
Death: Jun. 29, 1911
Burial:
Citico Cemetery
Vonore
Monroe County
Tennessee, USA
Created by: Darlene Hammond
Record added: Jul 20, 2008
Find A Grave Memorial# 28419141
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=We...;

I'm not sure but I think the McNairs ran it. If so this will be the same McNair's at what is now known as McNair's Stand just where 411 crosses the Conasauga River. The Slew/Slu is upriver from there about a mile, perhaps less. It would be on the north side of the main body of the river. I took my boys down there when they were small and found a gold ring in the slew...got into some stinging nettle too. There is much written on the relationship of David McNair and his Cherokee wife and their business relationship with the Hildabrands. If you'll contact the Historical Society Marian can tell you more.

I am in the process of buying an old farm on Friendship Church Road. I was told it was part of the old "Jimmy Mayfield" farm. It is an old farm house with a barn just before you get to the church on the right hand side of the road. There is a Spring and branch out front, the house sits on a hill. I am trying to find out some history of the farm, home, etc. I would like to restore the old farm house as close to the original as possible. We live without electricity or plumbing. We are excited about our move and would love to hear stories and history of the farm and house, or surrounding area if anyone knows anything. I appreciate it and hope to be having our old fashioned get to know everyone picnic at the branch soon.

Martha Allen

I'm looking for information on Martha Allen who was born in Copperhill, Tennessee - the year is unknown, but based on what I can guess off the birth dates of the children I would say it could be anywhere in between 1860-1880. She married William Vaughn and the history after that is a bit strange. My Great Grandmother (Edith Esther Vaughn) is shown living only with her Father and siblings in Alcoa, Tennessee in the 1920 census and in Montrose, Colorado with her Mother and siblings in the 1920 census as well and then after that there is nothing... I've had a really hard time tracking her parents and Allen seems to be a popular name for the area. Many, many Allens.

Re: BATES: "BORING"? : HILL : DOUGLAS

I don't know if you're still looking, but I do have some information for you on Ezekiel Bates descendants. I've just started this process with my father, so my information is sketchy. You should be able to flesh it out, I hope, as you need.

I'll try to be brief with what I know to date. Sorry I can't help with the Polk County Bates (I don't think). I am giving the direct line of descent.

I am the great-great grandson of Creed Fulton Bates (1848 - 1928), who married an Alice E. They had four daughters that I can confirm: Lillie Bates Wall (b. 1878), my great-grandmother, Gussie (b. 1881), Margaret (b.1885), and Mary R. (b. 1889). All were born in Bradley County, and the family later moved to Chattanooga. So the Bates tag ends in our line here. I believe, however, that Creed Bates was at some time the Lieutenant Governor of TN. I do know that he was both attorney and judge, as well.

Lillie Bates married John Jefferson (Jeffey) Wall and they lived in Chattanooga. I remember my very tall Great Grandmother Lillie B., and have just put up my Christmas stocking that she sewed for me 50 years ago.

Lillie had three sons, my grandfather, Douglas Fisher Wall (1902-1975), John Jefferson Jr. (b. circa 1907), and Robert, b. circa 1912). D. F. Wall was a stockbroker in Chattanooga and married Frances Elizabeth (Betty) Wheland (1902-1981), daughter of Zenus Windsor Wheland (1873-1957) of Chattanooga, and Lena Beck Willard (1877-1941) of Sullivan Country, TN. Zenus Wheland was the owner of the Wheland Foundry beneath Lookout Mountain. This later became North American Royalties and US Pipe.

Betty Wheland had two sisters (Mary and Dorothy) and one brother (Willard). I'm sorry I don't have the dates or marriage information handy for them.

My grandmother and grandfather (Betty and Douglas Wall) had two sons, James Wheland Wall (b. 1937 and my father), a now-retired pediatrician in Knoxville TN, and Robert Wheland Wall (b. 1939). a pioneer in early computer chip development. My father married Diana Lee Rose (1937-1991) of Cleveland, Ohio in 1958 and I (Scott Wheland Wall) was born at the end of that year. I have two brothers, Jeffrey James Wall (b. 1960), an attorney, and Douglas Leonard Wall (b. 1963), a real estate developer. I am an architect and a professor of architecture, originally at Tulane University, now back at the University of Tennessee.

I married Laura Elizabeth Manning of St. Simons Island GA in 1986. She is the daughter of Don and Karen Avery Manning of SSI. We have four children: Elisabeth Windsor (b. 1991), Ann-Elise (b. 1994), and fraternal twins, Megan and Graham (b. 1995).

Frankly, I am astonished that there are so many threads with this one man. I hope this is something of what you wanted. I'm quite certain I could dig up more information if you are still looking for this. My grandmother was quite a geneological packrat. I'm fairly certain we have pictures of Ezekiel and Hannah, (oddly), but I'm not sure about my own g-g grandmother, Elizabeth Jane Douglass.

best regards and good hunting.

scott wall
