Normally, once these books are sold out they are extremely difficult to find. Private book sellers or places like Amazon or Ebay will be your best bet. As far as I am aware the publisher and Polk Hist. Soc. do not have any available. I don't mind doing a look up for you if you'll contact me at bjreece@bellsouth.net. Now, If your family goes back into Monroe County the second printing is nearing being sold out. Last accounting I had there was 74 of 400 left. It covers several of the families who were also in Polk and other surrounding counties. I can direct you to the address for Monroe's book if you'll contact me.

I certainly know what you mean concerning the place of birth changing on the census.

Thomas and Agnes told the census taker my Mary Johnson was born in TN however when she got in her own home, someone who provided the information always said she was born in GA.

Her last son is always listed as being born in GA on the census but his daughter told me he was born in Ducktown TN. I questioned her about that because we have a Ducktown GA, too. So, I am going by what her father told her although his household always put GA as his place of birth. It gets really confusing!

In Dahlonega the gold mining was going big there in the 1800s, too.

There was a lot of movement of families between Polk County, TN and Fannin County, GA in the Ducktown Mining District that we called the Great Copper Basin by the 1950'S and later. A change in state of residence might involve a move of a few miles or could be a move of just a few blocks. Also, I find that the birth place for a person might change repeatedly from one census to the next. These records have to be used with care.

Hi! I am going to tell you what I have found. Although I have seen alot of family trees that list Samuel's death at around 1860, I found Samuel and his wife, Melissa on the 1870 census for Polk County, TN. I did not find them on the 1880 census but have not pinned down a death date yet.

Thank you for the history and information.

Lucinda's brother William Green Edwards stated on a document (he was born in 1825) that he was born in Tellico Plains, Monroe, TN and I picked that up since the other children before him was suppose to be born in TN, too. I may be wrong in assuming this.

Their father is Thomas Hall Edwards who was born in May 1791 in Fauquier County, VA and married Agnes Carnes in 1809 in Taylors, Greenville, SC.

Their children: Pleasant, Lucinda, Polly, Rebecca, Matilda, Thomas, William G, Nancy, Winnie b ? Hiwassee County, Agnes were suppose to be all born in TN and Mary ?? but Joseph Berry was born in Lumpkin Co GA.

They are in the 1830 Census in Giles County TN but that of course is a guess since those did not list the family names.

His father is Joseph Washington Edwards (1754 VA 1838 SC) who married Mary Elizabeth Taylor

I know that the counties change and some that we call Polk and Monroe were not in existance back in my dates for the most part. It is very confusing and I think folks just use the new counties so there is no confusion but for those such as yourself that knows the history of the counties, it confuses you. Me, too :)

Thank you

There's no way she could have been born in Tellico Plains or in Monroe County as neither existed until 1819. The Edwards of the area came into Monroe in two groups. One is that of John Edwards of Guilford Co., NC. They lived in the area between Fork Creek, Sweetwater and Philadelphia. The Johnson's they associated with were those of William Johnson in the same locality.

In Tellico the Iron Works were the main source of industry. It's been a few years since I looked a it but I do know that one of William Johnson's dtrs married a JOhnson that was working with Michael Carroll at the Iron Works.

Isaac Edwards moved his family from the area mentioned above to the Copper Basin of Polk County, TN. This was adjacent to Union and Gilmer until the formation of Fannin Co., GA. I've not established the exact relationship between Isaac and Mary Ann but Mary Ann Edwards married Jacob Stuart in this same area. Burgess Alonzo Edwards from this group moved to Bradley Co., TN where he was a respected and well known banker in the Charleston area for many years.

The other Edwards in the area were from Roane Co, TN. This is Edward Edwards. No relationship between these two Edward's families has been established. Edward Edward's son was Pleasant J.R. Edwards who was an employee of Nathaniel Smith. Smith allotted the land in the Ocoee District in 1840 then absconded with a lot of the money from the land sales.

William Miles "Wilse" Johnson abt 1805 TN or GA

William M Johnson was born abt 1805 in ? TN.
He married Lucinda "Cinda" Edwards about 1831 in TN.

Lucinda Edwards was born in Tellico Plains, Monroe, TN abt 1812 and died in 1835 Union County, GA and buried in Suches.

They had one daughter born to them by the name of Mary Sarah Johnson in 1832 in TN. Some say Ducktown but I can not prove.

The Edwards migration came from Monroe County TN down to Ducktown TN and then over to Suches, Union County, GA then after a special census in 1834 showing William Johnson w/2 females and the Thomas Edwards family, they went to Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, GA for the 1840 census. I can not locate William Johnson in any census with certainty.

I believe Willam M Johnson served in the Confederate, 27 GA Inf Co K regiment in 1862 but I am not 100% sure this is my William Johnson.

Grandparents Thomas and Agnes Edwards takes Mary Johnson down with them to Lumpkin County, GA and she shows up in the 1850 census.

NOW for the second problem.

Mary Sarah Johnson b 16 Feb 1832 in Tennessee....we think Ducktown but not sure.

In 1850 census she is with her grandparents.
In 1851 ? she is married. She marries a Johnson.
In 1860 census she is not in Ducktown TN or Dahlonega GA.
In 1867 she gives birth to the last child Thomas in Ducktown, TN.
In 1870 census she is in Lumpkin County GA as a widow and the following children:
1. M. Lafayette Johnson 1852 GA (d 1927 GA m Maggie Sullivan)
2. Henry Posey Johnson 1856 GA (d 1938 GA m Amanda Satterfield)
3. Mary Jane 1860 GA (d1920 GA m George Duncan)
4. Beverly Wilson Johnson b 1864 GA (d 1940 m Sarah Cain)
5. Thomas Albert Johnson b 1867 Ducktown TN! (d 1920 GA m Martha Whitmire) His daughter Cordie gave me this information.

Why did she go back to Ducktown to give birth to only the last child?

My thoughts are her husband, Mr. ? Johnson died sometime between August 1866 to the census he is missing in 1870 when she and the children show up again.

Thomas Johnson told his daugther Cordie that they (the family) lived in a cave to hide for a while ??? And that his father was a Native American Indian ??? along with his being a blacksmith.

Your thoughts, suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Janis
(jdfowler1947@gmail.com)

I was told that my Thomas Albert Johnson's father was a blacksmith and Native American. Also that they hid in a cave after he was born (1867 in TN or GA) His mother is Mary Sarah Johnson whose parents are William Miles "Wilse" and Lucinda (Edwards) Johnson from TN (?) The Edwards migrated from Tellico Plains, Monroe, TN through Ducktown (this is where Thomas Albert was suppose to be born however he was the last and only child born in TN)but back in Lumpkin County GA in 1870 census.

I notice a lot of the Johnson's went to Arkansaw and OK.

I am looking for two different Johnson lines.

One for William Miles Johnson who married Lucinda Edwards aroun 1832 in TN.

Second one would be the husband of their daughter Mary Sarah Johnson around 1851 in GA. Mary Sarah Johnson was born in TN, too.

My dates are all around yours and I have tried to connect to your line but it just does not fit.

I am completely at a loss.

Best wishes,
Janis
jdfowler1947@gmail.com4

Lavina Viney Ross who married Reuben "Rube" Tinsley Kanester died in about 1906 in Oklahoma. She and Rube moved out there with his parents and siblings in about 1901. She and Rube had 2 daughters, Lola Minerva [1901 - 1992] and Bonny Elizabeth [1904 - 2004.] The 1910 Federal Census shows both daughters as born in Oklahoma. Rube is listed as widowed. Rube married twice more after Viney's death. 2nd wife was Amanda Jane Wright married in Oklahoma and 3rd wife was her sister, Alice Ann Wright. Rube moved to Canada shortly after his 2nd marriage. Reuben, Amanda, Okie [his son with Amanda], Frank [his son with Amanda] and Bonnie are shown as living together according to the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Rube died 14 Sept. 1958 in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada according to the British Columbia Death Index 1872 - 1979 Record. He is buried in Creston, British Columbia, Canada at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Lola, who married Charles Summers Brookes [1894 - 1953], died in Mankota, Saskatchewan, Canada 22 November 1992. Bonnie who married and divorced George Morgan Wray [1904 - 1972], died 3 Sept. 2004 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.

The following is Bonny's obituary: WRAY, Bonnie Elizabeth nee Kanester passed away peacefully Friday, September 3, 2004 at the age of 101. Bonnie was the second child of Reuben and Lavinia Kanester, born in Oklahoma. Predeceased by her sons Grant and Ted, she is survived by her daughters Dorothy (Roy) Liebel of Oliver, Beryl (Bill) Wallinger of Nanaimo and daughter-in-law Sara Wray of Nanaimo as well as numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and 5 great-greatgrandchildren. Bonnie met her husband Morgan Wray in Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan where her father farmed for a time. Bonnie and Morgan homesteaded in Woodrow, but the drought pushed them on to Blackie, Alberta. Over the years, Bonnie made her home in Creston, Milestone, Kimberley and Nanaimo. Although she never drove, she went on many trips from the Northwest Territories to Europe, Asia, and the Maritimes. One of her fondest memories was of riding an elephant. Many thanks to the staff of Travellers, Dufferin Place and NGH extended care for her last years of care.

I saw that you had much of the Martin Bates genealogy. I am a descendant of his son Greenberry and Janette Kanester. Do you have any information on Martin and Rebecca's parents or Martin's Civil War service? Perhaps the location where they lived? My grandmother lived for a time with Greenberry and Janette and knew a lot about them so I have always been very curious about this family line, but haven't been able to get beyond Martin and only limited information about the Bates family.

We still have four seats available for the Deginner / Intermediate genealogy class that will start on August 30 at Tri County Community College. This class will not be taught again until the Fall of 2013 at the earliest so do not delay in signing up for this popular class. If you have wanted to take a general genealogy class to help your research along then do not miss this opportunity.

Who Do You Think You Are? - Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
NBC's TV program Who Do You Think You Are? sparked a lot of interest in genealogy research. If you would like to learn how to do your own family research then this course is for you. Some of the course material includes the usage of a variety of record sources in the pursuit of ancestor hunting. Sources such as vital records, census, church records, court, military, land property, and tax records will be discussed in detail. Genealogy basics as well as advanced topics such as DNA testing will be included as part of this course. This course is a requirement to take any of the advanced genealogy courses offered at TCCC.

6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Thursday (12 weeks)

You can sign up for this or any of my other two advanced genealogy courses (must complete above class to take advanced classes) by contacting Lisa Long, the director of community outreach at TCCC via phone 828-837-6810.
Is there anyone there that might be able to tell me about Frederick Carter family. He was born ca. 1813 NC and is said to hae died 1880 Polk Co. TN and buried in Four Mile/Old Ocoee Cem. near Benton, TN. He was married to a Margaret (some believe Reid)and had about 12 children. He was found on the Siler Rolls with 10 of those children. I searching a connection to Henry (we believe came to Spencer Co., IN md. 1872 Malinda Medcalf, had a son: Wm Calvin Carter born 1873. A story goes Wm Calvin was found as a babe in a house with the parents deceased.
Need to know if there might be a will or probate for Frederick that might mention Henry or his child. Or if there is a file/book, etc or the Carter Family History there.
Thanking you in advance for you act of genealogy kindness in taking the time to read this and possibly answering.
Martah
Fall Genealogy Class Schedule at Tri-County Community College

If you live in western North Carolina (Cherokee, Clay, Graham), Southeast Tennessee (Polk), or Northern Georgia (Towns, Union), and would like to improve your genealogy skills, you might want to consider taking one of our genealogy courses at Tri-County Community College in Peachtree, NC this Fall.

I will be offering one beginner class, an advanced class (you must have taken my beginner class to take an advanced course), or my new genealogy technology course on campus this Fall. The following are the classes that I will be teaching this Fall at Tri Community College in Peachtree, NC.

Researching an American Genealogy, Part 2 - Advanced Genealogy Course
For those who want to learn how to build pedigrees and reconstruct family groups, tying them from one generation to the next, this course is a must. This course also has value to other researchers. Historians, demographers, and sociologists studying people in the past will find that this course will provide important guidance in assessing which records will provide the facts needed. Part 2 of this popular advanced genealogy course will cover in-depth records and their uses. This course will look at vital records; census; probate and basic legal terminology; land records; court, church; and military records; and many more.

Prerequisite: Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday Nights (13 weeks)
August 21 - November 13, 2012

Planting Your Family Tree Online - Genealogy Technology Course
When you decided to work on your family history, you undoubtedly learned about places you should go (libraries, archives, courthouses, cemeteries, etc.) and tools you should use (libraries, catalogs, microfilm, etc.). As genealogists, we should seek out new resources and adopt new tools that may prove valuable in our research. This course will accomplish that by introducing you to new technology "places" and tools that you can use in your genealogy research. Social networking; blogs; wikis; photo and video sharing; genealogy software: free, paid and on the web; and online trees are just a few of the topics to be covered in this new technology related course.

Prerequisite: This course is open to all, but a basic understanding of genealogy principles and computer technology is strongly recommended.
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday (10 weeks)
September 5 - November 7, 2012

Who Do You Think You Are? - Beginning/Intermediate Genealogy Course
NBC's TV program Who Do You Think You Are? sparked a lot of interest in genealogy research. If you would like to learn how to do your own family research then this course is for you. Some of the course material includes the usage of a variety of record sources in the pursuit of ancestor hunting. Your instructor this Fall will be syndicated genealogy columnists Larry Van Horn. You can check out his bio on his genealogy blog at http://family-genealogy.blogspot.com/2012/05/fall-2012-genea....
Hi Beth, I notice this post and I have a Sue Patterson in my tree that I don't have any information on. She was John "Jackson Patterson and Nancy Payne Patterson's oldest daughter/ She was born in 1868. do you think this could be the same person. If so that would be awesome. I would love info on her.

Jeanie in Kansas
P.S we are having a large family reunion next weekend in Blue Ridge Patterson, Flanagan, Payne reunion. Starts Friday thru Sunday with the culmination being the decoration at Shady Grove (use to be called Payne cemetery)
