My great great grandmother Lavina Brown was born in Overton County in 1823. The family moved to McLean County, Illinois in 1826 or 1827. Lavina's parent's names were William and I think Frances (but I can't prove it). There is a cemetery record for a William Brown 1778 - 1845 and a Frances Brown 1780 - 1840 in Woodford County, Illinois and I strongly suspect that these are Lavina's parents. The Brown Family members were friends with the Carlock Family and there were some intermarriages. The 1820 Overton County census shows two William Browns. I don't know which one is my ancestor. I have records indicating that my William Brown was a "pioneer preacher from Tennessee." I am seeking whatever family and land ownership records might be available from Overton County. Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

I am researching Graces that moved from Tennessee to Missouri. My great great Grandfather was Nathaniel Grace. He was born Abt 1840 in Tennessee. I can not find anything on him. He was married to Emily Stallions (also seen as Stratton and Stallings) in Morgan County, Missouri. They were married 13 August 1868. Their children were Francis Marion, William, J.W., Isabell, Martha and Charley. Francis married Susan M. Thruston. Her death certificate shows her father being John Stallions.

I have found a website http://southerngrace.anniegms.com/nathanielgrace.htm
about a Nathaniel Grace and his family. I would love to find information that will tie my Nathaniel Grace in with them. My family has hit a major brick wall with Grandpa Nathaniel (dad says they called him Grandpa Than). He was married to a Mary Elizabeth Crenshaw 15 Jan 1860 in Benton County, Missouri. He was found living with an older brother or cousin, William (17) when he was 11 and a 12 year old Sarah (married Francis Marion Crenshaw). The family was headed by a Squire Glen Grace. This was in the 1850 District 5, Barry, Missouri census. 1870 census he is in Buffalo Township, Morgan County, Missouri with wife Emily. I have not been able to find any information on his parents. Nathaniel was not listed in 1880 Buffalo Township, Morgan County, Missouri Census with his children and wife, Emily.

Any information connected to him would be greatly appreciated!!

Victoria Grace
Hello my name is Larry.I emailing you regards your Copeland family. I have been trying to link my Ishmael Copeland for sometime. I do know he was in Overton with some different land dealings. I also know he is connected to Esau Copeland and his wife Elizabeth Bilbrey. My Ishamel Copeland married a Holly M ?, last name I am guessing is Bilbrey. The reason why I say that is I know for sure she was born in 1822, in Tn. I have also copies of an old Copeland bible probably dating about 125 years old with birth dates and names. In the bible it list Esau's and his wife with the correct dates as the one posted several times on ancestry.com and also lists a Clarinda (Clarisa) Copeland born 1797 in the bible as well. I notice also there was a Holly born 1828 married to a George Goulden. I was curious what source anybody might have to link them together with George Goulden. There is also several other names in the bible, I beleive one is the child of Esau. Hope to anybody might have any info on this family, that might shed some light.

Can anyone give any evidence either way?

tim

Overton Deed around 1912 for Willis Duncan, deceased

My grandpa Willis (Henry Wilson) Duncan died Feb. 1912 intestate, leaving a young wife Demerice and three young sons as well as three older Duncan sons from a first marriage to a Norris lady.

I believe the deed would have left a house and maybe some land to John Duncan and his wife, Susie Duncan. If anyone can send that copy of this deed to me, I will pay for your trouble. Thanks!
There is mention of a deed in Overton Deed Bk F, page 67:
Where John and Frances Taylor of Hanover Co. VA for "love and affection to Edmund J. Taylor" mentions estate of James Haws late of Overton Co. deceased. Aug. 8, 1829.
Could anyone do a lookup on this deed. I believe the Edmund Taylor is my grgrgrandpa, the father of Hezekiah Taylor of Overton/Pickett Co. I'm wondering if the deed mentions relationship of this John and Frances to Edmund????

I believe James Haws may have been a Methodist Minister who later moved to Sumner TN and died there in the early 1800's. Would one of the kind folks around Livingston please copy this deed and email it to me. Thanks so much!
Ann Duncan Kunkel in Wisconsin......akunkel@tds.net

I am doing my family history and would like to verify and find more information. My father, William Neil Smith, is the son of Neil Smith of Overton, Tennessee. Apparently, Neil Smith was born on April 1, 1921, and apparently Neil Smith is the son of William or Billy Smith and Grant Stover. Grant Stover is apparently the daughter of Joseph Henderson Stover and Clarinda Gates (Cindy) Parrott. I am trying to verify this information and find more information. Could anyone point me to any resources that may have any useful information for me?

I have no prof that Archibald Hays is my gr gr grandfather. It is all speculation and such. Archibald and Neomia Wilson Hays had a son by the name of Joseph b 1851 in livingston, Overton County, Tn. My gr grandfather by the same name , bithdate and place of birth matches. My gr grandfather's mother's name was Neomia Wilson. My fr grandfather names his second son Archibald and one of his daughters Neomia. So..........That is pretty much what I've been going on. I reivec info that someone else had speculated that ARchibald Sr. and a Melissa Thompson could be the parents of ARchibald and possibly Celia Hayes Wilson, though they have no proof either. My Hays line from my gr grandfather back is very illusive. I have no idea where theycame from, but I am still looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,,
Sherry Hays Thornton

I am writing the history of my family (descendants of Tench McCormick: Erastus McCormick married Martha Jane Burton around 1878) and am looking for information concerning Overton County during the Civil War and would be most grateful for any help in answering the following questions:

1. Was Overton County more or less equally divided in its sympathies for and agains secession? I understand that Eastern TN was largely pro-Union, owing to the low numbers of slaves and cotton plantations in that region, and that in nearby Scott, Morgan, and Fentress counties pro-Unionist sentiment surfaced in 1861. Was this true of Overton as well?
2. Is Overton considered part of the Cumberland Plateau, or is it geographically different?
3. When Union forces occupied East TN in the fall of 1863, did Overton County fall under Union control? If no, when were Confederate forces no longer in control of Overton?
4. Was Overton County a "no man's land" like much of the surrounding area due to the predations of partisan guerillas such as "Tinker" Dave Beatty and Champ Ferguson?

Thanks for any help, including referring me to a more appropriate forum for these questions.
Jim McCormick

Gypsy Colony? in Early Overton/Fentress Co. TN Boswell, Madewell et.al.?

This message will be posted to several lists, so I apologize if you receive this message more than once. On the Boswell list, there has been some discussion of Boswell gypsy origins. In Albert R. Hogue's History of Fentress Co. TN 1916, the ancestor of the Madewell's was from Egypt, arriving in 1795. Perhaps this was a polite way of calling him a gypsy. As I understand the origin of gypsy is Egytian. Supposedly, gypsy's claimed they were from Egypt. Both of these families were very early settlers in what is today Fentress Co. TN. What I would like to know is 1. Does anyone know of any oral or written history about a group of gypsy's settling in this part of Tennessee? 2. Does the Boswell or Madewell group have a Surname DNA study set up? 3. If so, does the haleogroup have a concentration is what is today Iraq/Iran? the supposed origin of gypsys.

Creed Garrett

I have seen it stated that Creed Garrett died 25 May 1889, but I've never seen a source for that information. Can anyone tell me where that date came from so that I can get a copy?

Thanks for any help.

Trying to find out about Gary D. Norris, the author of the "Overton County Roll Call." The book is a cemetery reading for many cemeteries in Overton County. I ordered a copy of the book back in October but have not received it and I am hoping someone can help me get in contact with Mr. Norris.
John
