Seeking information regarding the husband of Mary (maiden name possibly LITTLE) (1771-1845) and father of the following PAYNE children, as well as their TN co. of residence between 1790-1810. Mary and the younger children were in Franklin Co., AL from 1820-1840, but without a husband in the household. Several of the children later indicated their birth state as TN, but we don’t know which county. Any information regarding either ancestry or a Morgan Co., TN residence greatly appreciated. Smith and Shannon Families, Morgan Co., TN

I am looking for information on or other researchers of the following couple:

Andrew T. SMITH (b. about 1860 TN) and Mary Catherine SHANNON (b. about 1860 TN). They were married 2 Apr 1881 in Morgan Co., TN. At the time, Mary Catherine already had a son, Charles, who took Smith's name, becoming Charles Clifford Smith. It is not clear who Charles' father actually was, whether his father's surname was possibly Clifford, or whether Clifford was his middle name all along. Family lore states that possibly Charles was born out of wedlock. His birth date is Mar 25, 1875. He was born in TN.

In 1920 census, Andrew and Mary Catherine are living in Attalla, Etowah Co., AL.

Their son, Charles Smith, ended up in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN.

Has anyone come across these two in Morgan Co research? I see evidence of some Shannon families in the area and hope that someone will claim my Mary Catherine (she has also been listed as Mary katherine, or just Catherine in various sources.)

My GGG grandfather, John Potter is in the 1850 Scott Co, Tn Census. His age is comparable to the 1830 and 1840 John in Morgan County. Since part of Scott was formed from part of Morgan I am wondering if it is the same one.
Does anyone claim the John in 1830 and 1840 Morgan Co Census or know anything about him?

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

And we will be most pleased to find more missing links broken from our tree due to distance and change of generations to those who barely know a whit of their Kittrell kin.

Census Districts in Morgan Co

Is there a map that shows the breakdown of the census districts in Morgan Co. (or any county for that matter) for various years? I've looked and can't seem to locate one, although I am fairly new to researching and may not be using the right Google terminology.

Wouldn't that help get a better feel for where the families lived, or if they moved within their county? Or maybe the districts change names or boundaries, and the families still stay on the same property, it just looks like a move. Those are what I'd like to find out.

Is he the same Granville Davis enumerated in Roane Co., TN in 1900 at age 25? In that census, Granville Davis is included in the household of his parents, Phillip and Telitha Davis. He is married to a Maudie (age 22) with two young daughters, Minnie and Mary. Assuming this is the same Granville Davis, can anyone tell me anything about the first marriage to Maudie?

Recently, my father-in-law passed away. His grandfather was John Elbert Garrett who was born 20 Apr 1854, Lancing, Morgan Co. TN.
I am putting together a memory/ancestry book for my kids about their grandfather and would love to include any stories of his ancestors in Morgan Co. I know they were pretty early settlers going back to John M. Garrett and Elizabeth Hall Garrett's parents in the 1830s in Morgan Co. I was told that John Elbert Garrett was one of the men who helped build the Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Hello Morgan folks,

I seek a young woman (EADY MORGAN) born 1802 unknown county,TN. She married (GULLETT) in 1832 in Bledsoe County, TN and spent most of her life in Putnam, Overton and Gallatin TN.

Going on the assumption that her parents MAY have lived in Bledsoe? I started there and then went through the other counties searching for a household showing a young woman-not the age of the Householder--possibly an older daughter.

Not having much luck.
However, I have found a household, HIRAM S.MORGAN of Fayette Co. TN, 1830 census showing:
* 4 males under age 5
*1 male 5 and under 10
*2 males of 20 and under 30
*1 male of 30 and under 40----probably old Hiram?
and
*2 females under 5 years of age
*1 female 5 years and under 10
*1 female 15 and under 20
*1 female 20 and under 30
*1 female 40 and under 50 years of age
analysis:
6 children under age 5? three men age to be married and three women of marriage age.
So? sons and daughters? sons and daughters in law? daughters in law and sons? mixed bag?

In 1830 my Eady Morgan would be 28 years old and married by 1832. Does anyone have a family that this gal fits into or know of this Hiram S. Morgan genealogy? thanks ALOT.

My 80 year old friend is descended from this line and has now decided she would like to know more about them.

James Henry PUCKETT came from the Jewell Ridge VA area and settled in the Sunbright/Pilot Mountain area. He owned a large (500 acre) farm and as his children married they had homes on this farm. His children: Tom--died in VA, Simon Washington m. Molly PUCKETT (she was probably from VA but we're not sure) they had 4 children, Ed, and Nora.

My friend is the granddaughter of Simon and Molly and would like to know more about them. Simon and Molly' s children: James Roy m. Grace Mincy they had 9 children

Harry m. Jane Balenger they had 2 children and divorced, she remarried, Harry was a cop in Oak Ridge TN

Bess m. George Walker they had 4 children

Nell m Henry Maynor first and Samuel Henry Kesterson second, she had no children. Samuel Kesterson worked at the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge and is said to have been an alcoholic.

At one time Simon and Molly had a farm in the Hamilton OH area.

I am researching Broadrick, Broadric, Broddrick. etc family from Morgan County Tennessee in the late 1700's and early 1800's. My ancestor John Broadrick was born in TN in 1804,
I don't know who his parents were. John married phoebe Laymance in 1832 and had Jesse Broadrick (My GGGGrandfather) in 1835. In approx 1836 they moved to
Murray County (now whitfield county) Georgia. In 1838 Phoebe and John went back to Morgan County Tn for the funeral and estate settlement of Phoebe's father, John Laymance. I have the information available on the Laymance
family as research into this family has been done by numerous researchers. I do not have any information on John Broadrick or his family (siblings, parents, grandparents, etc.) Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I do know there was a William Broadrick on the 1810 or 1820 census for Morgan County. I enlarged (several times) an image of the census document and found that the spelling transcribed as "Broadric" was not correct as a "k" can be clearly seen (after enlargement) making the correct spelling Broadrick.

Grave of Robert CROW (1751-1834)

Recently someone posted information in another genealogy forum suggesting a Robert CROW was buried in Morgan County. I have not studied the county formations for this area but it may be in an area that was previously Roane County. The site may lie near the current Roane County line and, if possible, along the Emery/Emory River. This would likely be on or near property passed down to his descendents. Reportedly there was a lawsuit in Morgan County by a descendent of Robert CROW sometime around the 1870s(?) against a coal company for the degradation of Robert's grave. If anyone knows anything about this lawsuit or the whereabouts of Robert CROW's grave, please contact me. I am also seeking the grave of his son-in-law, Samuel BERRY, and his daughter Nancy as well as any other additional information on all of them. Thank you!

Sisters Sarah Parker b. 1878 and Wiletta Parker b. 1882 in Helenwood, Scott Co., TN. Sarah married Benjamin Honeycutt and Wiletta married Edd Gossett. All lived in Scott and Morgan (Oakdale). Sarah and Wiletta's mother was named Julia. Trying to find info on their father, Julia's family, etc. Thanks!

Gravesites of Meshack and Susannah Green

I am trying to find the gravesites of Meshack and Susannah Green, my ggg grandparents. Their last residence was near Lancing, Tennessee. Meshack was a Revolutionary War Veteran from N.C. and died in 1850 or 1851. Susannah died sometime after 1866.

Thomas J. Wilson "Willson" (m) Mary Ann Jones in Morgan Co., TN

I'm searching for my ggrandfather Thomas J. Wilson or Willson (b) Abt. 1864 (m) Mary Ann Jones (b) Abt. 1861. They married in Morgan Co. and I know some of their children were born there.
Frank Wilson (b) 1885
Shug Wilson (b) 1891 Stowers, Morgan Co.
Henry Wilson (b) 1899
Kye Wilson (b) 1903
Keeler Wilson (b) ?
It's possible there are more sons to this union. Most of the boys moved to Fentress Co. 2 sons Shug & Kye married Burks sisters, Keeler married a Moody, Frank (m) Julia Morgan. Don't know who Henry married???
My grandfather is Shug Wilson (m) Lennie "Jodie" Burks in Fentress Co. The only information I've found is that he served in WW1. They had 1 son, my father, Carl Joe Thomas Wilson (b) 1927 (m) Magdalene Wilson (b) 1922. Daughter of William Richard "Rich" Wilson & Ceverna Bilbrey.
I've found a lot of information on my maternal Wilson & Bilbrey lines but my paternal Wilson & Burks line is very sketchy. I'm hoping someone will help me fill in the blank spaces in my family tree. Thanks to everyone posting their families on line, it's been a tremendous help for me. It's the only way to see our family trees grow & grow.
