Loy McVea III, 60, Clarksville, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Gateway Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday until the time of service at the funeral home.

He was born Dec. 6, 1940, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Loy McVea II and Hattie Lockett McVea.

Mr. McVea was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and in the Jordan conflict. He received the Bronze Star among other awards.

He was a member of West End Baptist Church and president of the Oak Grove, Ky., Chamber of Commerce. He also was a member of the American Bowling Conference.

Survivors include his wife, Rosia Carter McVea, Clarksville; two sons, Mark McVea and Loy McVea IV, both of Clarksville; three daughters, Adriane Daughtery, San Antonio, and Pamela McVea Newton and Bridgett McVea, both of Clarksville; two brothers, Frank Mitchell and Joley Mason of San Antonio; two sisters, Selma Williams, Asheville, N.C., and Claudia Eldridge, Cynthiana, Ky.; and 11 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be military.

Montgomery Co History book

I found recently on a Google search the Montgomery Co. TN book that was done most recently....I believe around 1999. I can't remember the name now, so I don't know how to search for it again. Anyway, there was a story about two orphaned girls living in Halifax Co. NC and it said that when the Powells were leaving NC and going to TN, they begged to be taken with them. It suddenly occured to me that they must have been the two females living with Eaton and Holley Powell on the 1820 census. One was age 5-10 and the other was age 16-26. I had thought perhaps Holley had sisters who accompanied them, but it seems more likely they were these two orphans. I can't remember the surname, and would like to resource this information as the probable two girls living at the Eaton Powell household. Since Eaton and Holley were leaving NC with a new baby....Benjamin Eaton Powell, these girls might have been a real help for Holley while traveling.

Smiths of Henrietta, Neptune

Has anyone sorted out the early Smiths around Neptune and Henrietta? I'm trying to find the father of my James G. Smith (1809/1860), buried at the Neptune-Smith family graveyard at Neptune, Cheatham Co. I've read that he came to Montgomery Co. in 1812 with his father, but have never seen a source for that information, nor who his father was.

Early Smiths in the area that are of an age to be his father include:
J. R. Smith (3 infant daughters died bef. 1820, buried at Neptune-Smith Cem.)

James Smith (born ca. 1788, died aft. 1850) and wife Sophia. Descendants lived on the Mont Co. side. Son William Smith moved to near Port Royal.

William Smith (born ca. 1781, died aft. 1870) - father of Robert W. Smith (1805/1851), one-time owners of the land on which the Neptune-Smith Cemetery sits

Looking for Matthew Grant family of Montgomery County, TN.

Does anyone know who his parents were ??

In 1840 Montgomery Co., TN. there is a Matthew Grant who was neighbors with MRS. Hardy (Martha) Bryan whose daughter married Washington G. Grant and moved to KY.

Washington G. Grant had a brother named William Grant who moved to Holmes County, MS. (William and Washington's parents were Charles Grant & Mary (Polly) Bradshaw of Halifax, Virginia). On the same page of 1840 census includes other children of Charles & Mary. I am trying to find out anything/everything about this Matthew Grant who lived near this family.

My Matthew Grant was born in Virginia, moved west through the American frontier, had a son near Lookout Mountain, TN. in Dec 1839, had at least 7 children, and then a final move to PANOLA, TEXAS cir 1849-1855.

Have seen a Matthew Grant in Montgomery, Tennessee Census for 1830, 1840, and the 1841 voters list,
but he is still kind of a mystery person

John & Sarah Chester, Sr.

John Chester, Sr. was born 1787 in NC, died 30 Oct 1869 in Montg. Co., TN. He was married to Sarah ? who was born 1798 in GA and died 25 Apr 1868 in Montg. Co.. John and Sarah were in TN by 1820 and owned and farmed over 420 acres in the Brushey Fork and Piney Creek area. John was also a partner with Andrew Long in a flour mill called Walnut Grand Mills and Co. or Long and Chester Co which was formed 9 Mar 1855. John furnished the 17 1/2 acres for the mill and Andrew Long was to be the manager and run the mill. The mill was located on the west bank of Brushey Fork Creek at Piney Fork.

John & Sarah had at least seven children, Levi L. Chester, Henry Jackson Chester, John Chester,Jr., Mary Chester Johnson, Susan Chester Dailey, Elizabeth Frances Chester Ingram and Montgomery Chester, all born in Montg. Co. John's sons were all farmers like their father and they all lived in and around their parents on the 420 acres. In his will, he left to each of his sons and their heirs, 100 acres of his land or an amount equal to what 100 acres was worth.

Josiah (J.R.) Edgar had 2 wives, Jane and Sarah, and is buried,1894, at Liberty Cemetery with Sarah, 1915.
George Preston Edgar, died 1950, and wife, Jennie Smith had several daughters, and 1 son, Clifford Lewis Edgar, died 1955. Is Ruby Lee Gibbs Edgar, "Nany" that died in 1998 the wife of Clifford L Edgar? Louis R Edgar, died 1944, married Nettie Dougherty, she died 1927, did they have any children? On Google Books I see a book called "Montgomery County, TN 2000 Family History Book"

In that book I see two pages with Howser Biographies and photos but of I can't figure out how to print or save them off Google Books. I was wondering if someone who had that book would mind to scan and email those two pages to me?

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Anglin Funeral Home, Dover, with the Rev. Joe Park officiating. Burial will be in Stewart County Memorial Gardens, Dover.

Visitation will be today from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born March 15, 1940, in Richlands, Va., son of Charles Russell Christian and Frances Katherine Sparks Christian.

Mr. Christian was a retired CW3 U.S. Army pilot, Vietnam veteran, member of the American Legion and a Protestant.

Survivors include a son, Chris Christian, Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Lisa Alvarez, El Mirage, Ariz., and Debbie Block, Glendale, Ariz.; two brothers, Dave Christian, Reelsville, Ind., and Robert Christian, Greencastle, Ind.; a sister, Jo Ruth Bandy, Lafayette, Ind.; and 13 grandchildren.

Military will serve as pallbearers.

Charles "Chuck" Curtis Gill, 71, Clarksville, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home with Freddie Slaughter and Jeff Gill officiating. Burial will be [in] Cedar Grove Cemetery in Elkton, Ky.

Visitation will be Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from noon until the hour of service at the funeral home.

He was born on March 2, 1930, in Rockcastle County, Ky., son of George Gill and Cleda McHargue Gill Naber.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Richard Gill and Jackie Lee Gill.

Mr. Gill was a self-employed contractor and a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Doris Combs Gill; two sons, Donnie Gill, Springfield, and George "Rusty" Gill, Guthrie, Ky.; two daughters, Deborah Ann Hodges, Clarksville, and Susan Williams, Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, George Connie Gill, Mt. Juliet, and William R. Gill, Niles, Ohio; a sister, V. Francis Blake, Hartsville, Ala.; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Looking for descendents of Jeff Gill, b. ca. 1854, and Amanda Haley, b. ca. 1864, who married ca 1885 in Warren Co., KY. Amanda was the daughter of Anderson Haley who married Catherine Miller.

Jeff and Amanda appear in the 1900 Todd Co., KY census. Amanda died between 1900 and 1910. Jeff removed to Montgomery Co.

Their daughter Ether/Esther Earl Gill is my presumed ancestress. Ether married (1) Jesse Edwards (2) James Miller Williams. She died in Clarksville, TN.

Jeff and Amanda had two other daughters, Ellen and Lettie, and two sons named Samuel J. and Claude. Claude, Samuel, and Lettie lived in Montgomery Co.

I would like to correspond with any descendents of Anderson Haley and/or his daughter Amanda Haley.

Seeking Father of Armstead PAYNE, born TN in 1807

Seeking information regarding the husband of Mary (maiden name possibly LITTLE) (1771-1845) and father of the following PAYNE children, as well as their TN co. of residence between 1790-1810. Mary and the younger children were in Franklin Co., AL from 1820-1840, but without a husband in the household. Several of the children later indicated their birth state as TN, but we don’t know which county. Any information regarding either ancestry or a Montgomery Co., TN residence greatly appreciated. Also any family, death, burial, etc. information for Armstead's siblings.

I have a Roderick Moxley in my family history. He was my ggg-grandfather. I'll give you the information that I have on him.

Roderick was married two times. First wife's name was Permelia Gates. She was born about 1815 in North Carolina to a Philip and Sarah Wright Gates. Roderick and Permelia had six children.
1. Mary Ann Moxley, 2. Charles Moxley, 3. Hamilton "Ham" Moxley, 4. George Milton Moxley, 5. Albert Sydney Moxley, and 6. Sarah J. "Sallie" Moxley.

His second wife was my ggg-grandmother. Her Name was Elizabeth America Marshall. Born: 1823 in VA. They married on May 29, 1849, Pittsylvania County, VA. She was the daughter of James and Susan B. Curtis Marshall. They had six children, also.
1. James T. Moxley b: 1850 VA, 2. Bettie Moxley b: 1853 VA, 3. John Henry Moxley (gggrandfather) b:November 8,1856, Henrico County VA, d:February 20, 1932 Henry County VA, m: Catherine (Katerene) Harvey b: 1855 Henry County VA, 4. Samuel Moxley b: 1857 VA, 5. Peter Moxley b: 1859 VA, 6. Humphrey Moxley b: 1864 VA.

I hope this helps you out a little. My great aunt gave me most of the info on Roderick.
