I am looking for dates of death and where several of my ancestors are buried in Monroe County. Is there a listing of death records before 1850? I have looked through all of the online records for cemeteries, but have not found any names I am needing. The names I am looking for are Gunn, McKinney and Newcomb.

Any information is greatly appreciated!
I have some limited info on the family of John W. Wilson (1797-1859) and wife Elizabeth Campbell (1802-1870). They lived in Monroe County somewhere near the McMinn County border.

They had 10 children including David (1823), James H.(1824), Elizabeth Jane (1828), Alexander Preston (1831), John M (1832), George Baxter (1834), Robert D. (1836), Sarah E. (1841), Nancy Margaret (1844), Malinda C. (March 10, 1846).

Some of the original family members left Monroe County and relocated to Bradley County. In some cases, I have spouse names. I have some of the Alexander Preston line down to present day - most stayed in Tennessee. I also have some of the George Baxter and Robert D. descendants to present day. Some descendants of this family migrated to Kansas and Oklahoma.

Madisonville Democrat, Wednesday, January 31, 1934, Page 1:

“Burton Hill---Pneumonia has laid its feverish hands on Mr. Isham Cagle, one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens and carried him away to yonderland. He was laid to rest in New Hope Cemetery by the Kyker undertakers. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C.C. Seagle. A large crowd was present. He was 81 years old. His wife preceded him to the grave only two years ago. He was longing to go Home. This old world had lost its charm. He was a member of the New Macedonia Baptist Church. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.”
Abraham Phillips in Monroe Co., TN

Abraham was born in 1811 but county uncertain. We have found a Polly Phillips in Monroe in the 1830 census with a son in the correct bracket to be our Abraham.

We know from civil war records that his oldest son was born in Monroe county in 1836. From this one would expect that his marriage to Ann also took place in this county about 1835. Since the county was formed in 1819, can I expect to find the marriage records there for 1835?

Abraham and Ann named their sons: Eligha Sanders, Elisha Herman, Benjamin Madison,William Riley, Silas H., Joseph Marion, John Washington, Warren Jasper, George Marion. Would like to determine parentage of this Abraham.

Abraham moved his family up to Cades Cove in Blount Co. and to Clay Co., KY, thence to Dallas County, Missouri.

I have Burris/Burress families in Anderson & Campbell Co, TN. Does anyone see a Monroe Co connection?

Elijah BURRIS was 83 in the 1850 Campbell Co TN Census Records b Mar 15, 1761. He m 1st UNK, 2ND UNK, & 3rd Oct 13, 1839 Campbell Co Mary "Polly" German/Jarmon b abt 1796.

Possible children:
1-Evangeline Burris b 1791 m Francis Lovett.
2-Elijah Burris, Jr b February 15, 1792.
3-Jenny Burris b abt 1797 m Edward Crow
4-Levi Burris b abt 1808.
5-Willis Burris b abt 1810.
6-Marintha Holland Burris b abt 1811 m John Wallace.
7-Peter Burris b abt 1812.
8-Eliza Burris b abt 1814 m James Harness.
9-William Burris b 1814 m Elizabeth Wilson.
10-SILAS BURRIS b abt 1816 m March 16, 1844 Anderson Co, TN to JUDAH WHITE.
12-Andrew Jackson Burris b abt 1817 m Luvania Beach.
13-James Burris b abt 1817? m Mary.
14-Bluford Burris b abt 1820 m Francis Tally.
15-Francis Burris b abt 1820 m Benjamin Hackney.
16-Henry Burris b abt 1823 m 1st Mary Ann Gray, 2nd Mary Bond.
17-Mary Polly Burris b abt 1823 m Hardy Martin.
18-Thomas Newton Burris b abt 1825 m Mirah Seiber.
19-Pickney Burris b abt 1843 m Mary. (I believe he is the only child of Elijah & Mary Polly German/Jarmon.

All of these children probably didn't belong to Elijah Burris, if not his children, maybe g/children? There has to be a connection, as all of these people were placed at one time in Anderson, Campbell, & Roane Co, TN. The only other Burris listed in the early East TN Tax List 1801-1802 was Jesse Buris from TN,> IN>, IL.

Some of Elijah's children removed to MO, I believe, in 1840-1850.

Any help on any of these people would be greatly appreciated.
I'm doing a family research and am trying to find out when my gr gr grandfather William Marshall Magill left Monroe co. and moved to St. Louis MO. He was the son of James Magill (Sr? or Jr). He would have been born abt. 1855-1860 in Monroe Co. His grandfather was William Jr from Greene Co. Any info regarding his birth, parents and their births, his residence in Madisonville area, etc would be greatly appreciated. I understand that his aunt and uncle Harvey moved to GA with his mother but I'm a bit confused re: i.e.his father and mother. Was there a James Jr?. Who was his mother, etc. Thanks Alison Magill Duffy Alison.Duffy@state.tn.us

They had several children: James K. P., Parlee, Frances, Winfield, Monroe, and Marshall. I want any info anyone might have on THomas Taylor & his children. I also want to find out who his parents were. On the 1860 census, he was living next to a Balden H. Taylor. Could these 2 men be brothers?

Thanks,

Bridget

A Nicholas Bowers was apptd Tellico Indian Factor--
which is Tellico Indian Trading Store Manager apptd by the Colonial Government- see "INTRUDERS" recommended by R J Meigs--But there is also a Nicholas Byers of Henry Co. TN who is mentioned in the 2 different treaties where Nicholas Bowers/Byers is awarded the 1819 640 acre grant of Blount Co Land--there ages are close but not same, both are mentioned in 2 different versions of the same records. Levi Bowers b. 1815 is in Blount Co census the same time as Nicholas BOWERS b. 1768 wife Catherine Saum of Shenandoah VA. Are theses the parents of Levi?

James Murr's wife Martha J, son of Jeremiah Murr & Rachel Click

I have made a wonderful discovery of the maiden name of James Murr's ( b. 19 Feb 1835 Cocke Co died 22 June 1910 Texas Co Missouri)first wife Martha. Her maiden name was BOGART. Their daughter Sarah Murr b 1865 Union Co Ill married William Riley Coffman. They went to Dallas County, Iowa. On the 1925 Iowa census it gives the names of the parents. Sarah didn't die until 1947 and I was able to obtain that information from that census.

1925 Dallas Co Iowa household 41
Wm Coffman 65 Tennessee father Wm Coffman Tn mother Susan Presley
Sara Coffman 59 Illinois father Jim Murr born Tenn mother Martha Bogard born Tenn
Pearl Coffman dtr 17

I can not find Martha in the 1850 census in Monroe county, but I made another discovery while trying to track her parents.

Jacob Sheets died in Monroe County leaving a will 18 Feb 1853. His wife according to what I can find was Margaret Rule. Their children were John & Henry Sheets, Polly Gaston and wife James, CATHARINE BOGART WIFE OF JOHN BOGART, Martha Mosier wife of John Mosier, Margaret Shields WIFE OF JOSEPH SHIELDS (which I think is key here).

James Murr and Martha Bogart had a son JOSEPH SHIELDS MURR b 8 July 1860 Monroe Co Tenn.

The Bogart's aren't on the 1850 census that I can find anywhere. Guess they were left off, but 1830/1840/1860/1860/1880 I can find them.

John Bogart was born abt 1780 in Virginia. Catherine Sheets was born abt 1800.

1830 Regiment 67, Monroe, Tennessee pg 114
John Bogard age 50 to 60
11000001
11211 females

1840 Monroe, Tennessee (img 5) pg 144
John Bogart age 60 to 70 (born 1770 to 1780)
210000001 males
0110001 females age 40 to 50

1860 Dist 8 Monroe Co Tn household 749
John Bogart 79 Virginia
Catharine 60 Pennsylvania
Margaret 30 Tenn

1870 Dist 10 houehold 36 Katie Bogart 70
Peggy 40

1880 Dist 10 household 37
Mrs Catharine Bogart 78 widow
Margaret 50 daughter

This Catherine Bogart is ALWAYS living around Joseph Shields and Margaret Sheets. I suspect that Martha J was their daughter, but I don't have positive proof. Martha was born abt 1829 is the closest age I have on her from the 1860 census in Monroe Co. Then she dies in Union Co ILL approx 1865/1866 when James Murr marries his 2nd wife Francis Bryant McCall 23 Oct 1867

In 1860 I find a John Bogart who had married 29 Oct 1857 to a Mary Jane Holcomb/Halcomb. I think he's the same one who migrated to Texas by 1880.

Carolyn Whitaker
Johnson City, TN

James and Sarah E moved to Lawrence Co, AR sometime after 1850, but there's no sign of Jinsey after the 1850 census. I'm looking for anything related to this family.
Humbles and Secrests in Monroe Co. 1830

There were several Humbles and Secrests (spelled Secriss) in the 1830 Monroe census. Does anyone have ANY data on them or their descendants? I think a male Secrest married a Humble around 1825-30. These may be my great great grandparents. My grandmother's name was Nannier Humble McGehee. Her mother was Terressa Secrest, b. TN 1835. Melissa was in Smith Co., TX in 1850, no husband, with five kids all born in TN. There was one other Secrest in Smith Co at that time. He was William Harrison Secrest, b. 1824 in TN. I have no data connectin him with Melissa but could have been a cousin.

Bob Bledsoe
Austin, TX

I am looking for where Mary, daughter Selina, son Eli lived in 1870. I can't seem to find them anywhere. Also, the husband Robert, supposedly died in 1865, we haven't found them in the 1860 census either, just the 1880 and then it is just Eli and Mary, Selina had already married David Dalton by then I guess, she isn't listed with them. Help!

New website for Monroe County Bakers

The Pamunkey Bakers Association -- an informal group of any and all descendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker of Colonial Virginia -- is proud to announce the launch of our new website:

http://www.pamunkeybakers.com

Complete with message board (requires registration), photo gallery (where folks can upload photographs, documents and records relating to the Pamunkey Bakers - also requires registration), research reports and a full database of Baker-Davenport descendants (corrections welcome!), the website offers a focus for research into the origins and scope of our branch of the Baker family.

Association members lay claim to being Pamunkey Bakers through the marriage of Thomas Baker (c1711-c1777) to Dorothy Davenport (1716-c1790), whose grandfather Davis Davenport is well-documented as an early landowner in the Pamunkey Neck region of Virginia. Davis Davenport's lands adjoined those of an earlier Thomas Baker, and discovering whether and how that earlier Thomas is linked to our Thomas -- as grandfather, grand-uncle or other relative, perhaps -- is one of the purposes of the website.

The website also hopes to trace our Baker family as it grew and spread out -- through Virginia, in Caroline, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Botetourt and Montgomery Counties, among others; into North Carolina, in Burke, Wilkes, Buncombe, and Yancey Counties, among others; into South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama; and west into Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and more.

And through the website, the Association hopes to unite today's Pamunkey Baker descendants in appreciation of our common origins, heritage, and history.

Come visit, sit a spell, share a story, post a query, add your branch to the family tree.
a texanner scott is listed being married on december 4, 1874 in Monroe county. does anyone have any information on this Texanner Scott? I am looking for a Texanna Scott the daughter of Thomas Scott who both may be on the Monroe county census in 1870 if this is her. She was living on the Polk county / Mcminn county border in Cog Hill in 1860, and had moved by 1870
Does it give the name of the person who Texanner married and does later census data give the names of any children.
Thanks
Todd Williams

I am told that my great grandfather, Henry Reynolds, drowned in Oakdale sometime around 1892-1893. He was rafting logs to Chattanooga. His body was not found for 2-3 months, and he was buried on the bluff of the river at Eagle Point. I am also told that this area may have been called Honeycutt at this time.

I have never been able to find any information on my great grandfather other than the fact that he was married in Monroe, Tennessee on August 8, 1870 to Lodusca Theodosia Allison.

If anyone has any additional information regarding his parents, his death, etc. that you could share with me, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks so much.

Death Claims Mrs. Julia Love

Funeral services of Mrs. Julia Reagan Love were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church by the Rev. J. A. Lyons, assisted by the Rev. C. W. Dean. Burial took place in West View cemetery.
The death of Mrs. Love came Friday night at 10:45 o'clock at the end of several weeks' illness with pneumonia during which little hope was held out by attending physicians for her recovery. She was eighty-two years old last September and spent almost her entire life in this community, where she was loved by all who knew her. She was born at the old Reagan homestead, now known as Reagan Station, and received her education at Athens and later at Asheville, N. C. It was during her school days at Asheville that the civil war broke out, and she was unable to return to her home for several years. In 1868 she was married to James R. Love and to this union six children were born. Her husband died in 1885, leaving her with these small children and her untiring devotion in raising up a family of devoted Christian children has been the subject of comment for years. Two of her children, Dr. Hattie Love and Mrs. Tom Corry (Bessie Love) were missionaries in China for many years,Dr. Hattie Love still being engaged in this work. Mrs. J. W. Lowery and Mrs. Frank St. John, her other daughters, have been actively engaged in home missionary work in their own communities for many years.
Mrs. Love was the eldest member of the Sweetwater Methodist church and of it's Woman's Missionary Society, having been connected with this church for 58 years.
Mrs. Love had been a sufferer from rheumatism for years, but was not confined to her home and continued interest in everything about her until her late illness. Only the past fall, in spite of her 82 years, she accompanied her daughter, Dr. Hattie Love, on a motor trip to New Orleans and many other southern places, and enjoyed the trip to the fullest.
Mrs. Love was a sister to Major J. H. Reagan of Reagan Station, and besides him is survived by these children, Mrs. J. W. Lowery, Mrs. Frank St. John, Mrs. Tom Corry, Dr. Hattie Love, Mr. James Love and Mr. John Love; seven grandchildren, Frank Love St. John, Louise St. John, Love St John of Johnson City, Joe Walker Lowery, James R. Lowery, Julia Lowery. Worrell Love, Jas. Robert Love, John Thomas Love and Margaret Bell Love; the two great grandchildren are Frank Bowman and Mary Ellen St. John.
The old Love home in Sweetwater has been the mecca for years of the admiring friends of this esteemed lady, whose generous hospitality was dispensed in the old fashioned southern way. She has passed on, but the influence of her beautiful life will be felt for years to come.

---from: the Wednesday Janaury 6, 1926 issue of THE SWEETWATER NEWS.

They are listed on the 1850 Monroe Co Federal Census, but shortly thereafter moved to Iowa. They are my GGGrandparents. I am particularly interested to know their parents' names. If anyone has any info they can share on either John or Catharine, I'd really appreciate it.

Descendants of Alexander McGhee

I am trying to find information concerning the descendants of Dr. Alexander McGhee who died in 1841 in Blount County. At least one of his children lived in Monroe County. I believe that I descend from his son, Dr. John McGhee, but am looking for more proof.
