Can someone identify the following person from this sketch...."I ascertained that the wounded man had been shot, the ball passing through him. He was the son of Captain Jack Smith, an old and honored citizen who lived near Decatur, in Meigs County, He later became Postmaster in Meigs County, Census Post Office.He had a fine wife and family."

This is about a Confederate soldier who was wounded October 28, 1864 at the battle of Morristown. I am trying to identify him.

Searching for information about Tyre/Tyri KELLY, b. ca. 1815-1820, Tennessee and his wife, Delilah.

In 1850, Tyri KELLY is living in Meigs Co., TN, with wife, Delilah and children, Polly Ann, Louisa E., Susannah C., James, Elizabeth, and Martha.

In 1860, Tyre KELLY is still living in Meigs Co., TN (8th Civil District - Moores Cross Roads Post Office), with wife Delila and children, Mary A., Louisa, Susan, James, Lena, Martha, And? (possibly Andrew), John, and Catherine.

By 1870, Tyre/Tyri KELLY, is likely deceased as his wife, Delilah is now head-of-household and living in Rhea Co., TN (4th District-Sulphur Springs Post Office), with children, Louisa, Martha, John, and Catherine.

I can't find Delilah (Nee?) KELLY or her family after 1870.

Any help would be appreciated.

Covingtons in 1840

Am looking for any information on the family of William Covington. William was born in about 1808 in TN. His wife may have died in about 1839. I don't know her name. I believe he remarried in Arkansas in the late 1840s. I know of 4 children born in TN: Martha (1831), Polly (1833), John (1836), and Martin (1839).

I believe that William was one of several brothers who moved to Arkansas in the 1840s and '50s. John (b. ca. 1811) and family lived in neighboring Rhea co. Andrew Jackson (b. ca. 1820) was in Rhea co. in 1850. I have not yet found in TN other brothers Louis (b. ca. 1824), Rufus (b. ca. 1830), and James M. (b. ca. 1823). James M. is our direct ancestor. Newspapers tell us that Jackson and Rufus were brothers. The rest is my speculation based on proximity in census records. Birth years are also very approximate, as census ages were not consistent from year to year. Any information or leads would be much appreciated.

Hello. The late Helen Hewitt generously posted the 1852 marriage info of my 2nd great grandparents, Josiah Allen and Naomi Renfro, on the MEIGS COUNTY MARRIAGES, 1850 – 1900 GenWeb page a number of years ago. The names were slightly mistranscribed, and appear this way:

I have been attempting to determine the identity of Josiah Allen’s parents for a number of years, and am presently at a brick wall. I’m hoping that the marriage license might list his parents, though I’m not sure this was the custom in Meigs Co. at the time.

Problem is that I have not been able to locate the original license anywhere. I initially contacted the local courthouse by phone, and was told that they have no such license on file. After learning about the mistranscription on GenWeb, I wrote the courthouse a couple of years ago with this alternate name, but no one ever responded to my query.

I then wrote the local library, and again no one ever responded to my query in any way.

I know that Helen Hewitt must have had access to the original license at some point, but just don’t know where or how.

So, I was just wondering if there might be a kind soul in the area who might know how to go about tracking down the original, so that a copy could be obtained. Any and all assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks very much, and please feel free to contact me directly at bablckwd2.0@hal-pc.org.

They are from Ballard Co., KY and their first child, my mother, was born there in 1912. There is no record of their marriage in Ballard Co., therefore they must have gone elsewhere to marry. Rachel Watson married Isaac Butler in 1857 in Meigs co. Isaac was of McMinn county. Who were Rachel's parents? Can't find her in 1850 census. Isaac was first married to Martha Price (1854, divorced?). The 1860 census has two children living with Isaac and Rachel, Betsy Ann age 11 and William age 8. A Wm M. Price age abt 73 died in 1919 with Rachel Butler listed as mother. Who were the parents of Betsy Ann and William? Isaac was living with his parents in McMinn co. in 1850.

The area of the future Gates County of North Carolina is the origin in the USA of the largest Kittrell family and Bertie County, NC was the home of one or more of the next generation, and later they moved on through Craven, Pitt, Granville, Carteret, Davidson and other NC counties as land grew to scarce for the number of male heads of household to feel that they could prosper.

Anyone with Kittrell in their lore please write or post or both!

Anyone with Kittrell in any Tennessee document is welcome to write and to share info on an area rich in Kittrells, complicated to delineate from which Kittrell they descend and of which we have a large knowledge. We lose track of some of the female Kittrell lines consistently in every generation and would like to add them back to the family tree.

The name has many spellings through the centuries in public record including as examples only Kittrell, Kittrel, Kitrel, Kitrell, Kitterlin, Kitterill, Kitterell,..., leterally dozens or literally dozens depending how well you spell such things.

We will assist anyone on Kittrell matters (for free of course other than the wealth we get from both of us sharing some of what we know).

Seeking Origins of JOSIAH ALLEN from Meigs Co., TN.

Anyone possibly know which Meigs Co. Allen line my 2nd great grandfather, Josiah Allen, might tie into?

Josiah was born in 1830, possibly in NC. Then resided in Meigs Co., Tennessee for an unknown period of time. Eventually married Naomi (sometimes Naoma or Niama) Renfro (sometimes Rentfro or Renfrow, etc.) in Meigs Co. in Dec. of 1852. (Marriage listed on the TNGenWeb site erroneously as that of “Isaiah” Allen and Naoma Renfro.)

Josiah relocated to Cedar Co., Missouri by 1858, and then went on to reside in Wright Co., MO. Enlisted on the side of the North in the Civil War and died of fever at Rolla or Houston, MO in 1862.

Josiah and Naomi had four daughters: Ritter Amanda (1853), Sarah Elizabeth (1855), Mary Letitia (1858) and Susan Francis (1862).

I have Josiah’s military and pension files, but these give no clue to his origins.

Any info regarding Josiah’s parents would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I'm searching for my ancestor Franklin G. Pierce. He was born in TN, married Sarah Harrid in 1845 in Meigs County and then moved to Texas a couple of years later. Does anyone know about Pierce families in Meigs County about that time? I think Sarah's father is probably Redmond Harrod, who is in Meigs Co censuses from 1850-1900. In 1850 he's next door to a Thomas Pierce who would possibly be the correct age to be my Franklin's father. But since the 1840 census doesn't list children, I'm kind of stuck. If anyone knows about Pierces or Harrods, at least some of which immigrated to Hopkins County, TX, I'd love to hear from you.

John W(esley?) Stokes in 1880 Meigs census as a 52 year-old widower, b NC and both parents b NC. Shown with dtrs Emiree, Maryline, Camoline and Martha, grandson Charles (shown as son, but was actually Emiree's son). The 2 oldest dtrs are shown as age 24 and b TN, and their mother was b TN. I conclude from this that John had lived in TN since at least 1856.

I've never been able to find out anything else about this man, my gg-gf, nor his wife. They're not in any earlier census indices that I've seen. I assume he was one of the several John W Stokes with Confederate records, but can't tell which. Don't know when he died (he's not in 1900 TN census).

Anybody with any info will earn my undying gratitude.

Searching for infomation on Hiram Miller and Alice"Ally' McCollum Miller. I think they married in Roane county TN .abt 1825. They are on the 1860 Meigs county census living next door to their daughtor,Martha Jane Givens. Martha married George Nicholas Givens in Meigs county Tn. in 1855.They both died in [Oklahoma] Indian Territory.
Hiram was born abt.1780 in North Carolina ,and Ally was born abt 1790 in Kentucky. I think he may have been married before Ally.

I am looking for anyone that may have knowledge of a connection between William GRIZZLE b abt 1829 TN, his wife Elizabeth COTTON b. abt 1931 AL and the Hardbarger Families of Civil War Years TN.

The 1870 Census, Decatur, Meigs Co, TN Lists:
Elizabeth GRISSELL, her sons George age 16 and Harrison age 12
included in the household are: Sarah HARDBARGER b 1851 TN, and her 2 year old son, William H.b 1868 TN.
As this is Post Civil War Era and Elizabeth is later reported as a widow, I am thinking Sarah (may be Grizzle) and Elizabeth may be sisters in law trying to survive.

William and Elizabeth GRIZZLE were in Chattanooga for the 1860 census. Sometime during the war years Elizabeth moves to Meigs Co.

When Liz migrates to Dallas TX by the 1880 census, there also appears a young William Grizzle, the same age as this Wm Hardbarger. Coincidence....Maybe......

I am having lots of trouuble trying to locate any records on these folks. Does anyone have any ideas how I can attack this ???????

Hi, I recently received Civil War Pension Records from the National Archives which indicate that one family member lived in the town of Buttsville, Meigs Co TN. From recent maps, it appears that this town (with its rather unfortunate name!) no longer exists. Can anyone give me more information on where the town of Buttsville was, and what census district it was in? I suspect this family member may have been there in 1870 census.

Davis d/o Saml Davis & Hester Casey......Bird Bowlin was in house of Saml Davis. Mary E. Davis and Byrd Bowlin married July ll, l880 both buried in Pioneer, Tn.... A will of any family names greatly appreciated....My gr.mother Martha J. Bowlin married Ade Cox and rec'd word of land left to her but taxes were due.. When she died came to my mother Ruby Mae Cox Marlar in Cinn. Ohio early 30's, depression...she couldn't pay them either so her brother Earnest in Robbins, Tn. or Jellico....paid them...Everyone dead now...sure could use some proof. Any good legal minds around from the Tn. areas that like to look up old deeds, etc? I am trying to establish the parents of Joe Scrudder b. abt. 1871 -73 d. 1928 bur. Meigs Co., TN married 1. Lou Mullins (in Hamilton Co., TN) 2. Gussie Mullins (in Hamilton Co., TN). Joe/Gussie Scrudder and several children are found on the 1920 Hamilton Co. TN census and then just eight years later Joe is buried in Meigs county. Does anyone know what county Joe died? I hope someone will have the answer.
