I have found some interesting Hoods in McMinn County, TN. William Hood, Sr. and William Hood, Jr. I find William Hood, Jr. in 1830 census with 2 males under 5, 1 male 10-15; and himself 30-40; 1 female under 5; 2 females 5-10; and wife 30-40.
I find William Hood, Sr. in 1840 census of McMinn Co., TN aged 60-70 and wife 60-70.
I am unable to find William Hood, Jr. in 1840. I wonder if he was in Indian War during 1830s and killed or died for some other reason or moved elsewhere.
Is there a Will Book for that period of 1830-1840 that might show if there is a Will for a William Hood?
Could someone check for me? I live in Kansas.
Thanks
Judy

It is thought that Joanna was the first born maybe to his first wife.

We have heard that there were a total amt of 8 children. We aren't sure how many with each wife. As of right now we only have Martha Ann Melton Hickey w/o Cornelius Hickey was from South Carolina and Martha was from Virgina. Sorry We don't have any dates on them.

It is also said they may have moved to the Arkansas area. Might be why Joanna's middle name is Arkansas.

If anyone knows any of these would U please contact me. I am doing this for a friend. Thanks for any help in advance.

Happy Hunting and God Bless e1.

Hi to the Wallin/Walling/Wallen researchers,,"Stan and Hubscuboard,,
I was wondering if ya'll have come across my line of Walling's,,Mine is John Walling bn in Scott Co.Va abt 1807 according to the 1850 Scott Co.Census,,
Hi parents were Joseph Walling and Francis 'Fanny' Tyree Walling,,
Somehow it seems that most Wallin/Wallen/Walling researchers for some reason has skipped over my line,,I just purchased a copy of Carolyn D Wallin's book 'Elisha Walling 'The longhunter',,now where in the book does it have anything about my John Walling,,
He married my GGGgrandmother,,now he 'could' have possibly been married once before he married her,,my GGGgrandmother's name was Margaret "Peggy 'Conley,,
On the 1850 Scott Co.Census it lists her son and daughter by a previous marriage,,however,,their surname was Conley,,but for some reason on this census it lists them both as being a Walling,,my GGgrandfather ,,"Margaret's son by the first marriage was Napoleon Conley and he married Sarah Bishop,,daughter of John Bishop and Elizabeth Babb,,
Napoleon's sister was Jane Conley,,it shows her in the household of her mother and John age 18 as a 'Walling' instead of Conley,,
This line left Va ,,by 1860 was found in Marion Co.Ark ,,on this census they have Napoleon going by his real name 'Conley',,however it has John and Margaret listed as Walden instead of Walling,,
by 1870 ,Margaret is not on the census,,and John is remarried,,on this census they are in Howell Co.Mo,,
John died abt 1872,,and my Conley's moved to Ozark Co..
I would love to be contacted by someone that is related through this line,,
You are welcome to email me directly at Lookin4mylstroots@aol.com
Leatha

A friend of mine bought a book at a garage sale and this Newspaper article fell out of it re: Lewis Burris of Athens Tennessee, McMinn County. From comparing census records and the looking up burial records my best guess is that it belongs to Lewis Burris born 8/4/1917 and died February 16, 1966. There was no date on the article. This person is not related to me but I thought I would post it in the hopes that it is someone's relative that they are looking for. It is titled:
Lewis Burris Dies in M'Minn: Gunshot Wound Kills New Zion Farmer:
Athens, Tenn. - McMinn County officials today were continuing an investigation into the death about mid-morning Wednesday of Lewis Vencin Burris, 40, whose body was found near the mail box at his home on Rt. 2, Athens.
McMinn County Coroner Bob Harriell attributed death to a bullet wound in the head. He said a .22 caliber revolver was found near the body.
A seven-man coroner's jury, empaneled by the coroner, was unable to agree on a verdict in the death and left the case open for further investigation.
McMinn Sheriff Calvin Cannon, who aided in the investigation, had officers make paraffin tests and fingerprint tests examination of the gun.
The body of Mr. Burris was reported found by Audrey Watters of Athens, a rural mail carrier. The boxer dog of Mr. Burris was reported to have been "guarding" the body.
A lifelong McMinn County resident, Mr. Burris was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benton Burris. A bachelor, he had lived alone since his father's death about two years ago.
Surviving are a brother, Charles Burris, Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Hugh (Annie) Miller, Etoway; Mrs. Jessie Kinser, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Mrs. Bruce (Stella) Blair, Rt. 2 Athens.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at Dender Funeral Home in Etowah.
-----------------------------
I couldnt find much information on this person but did find a 1930 census from McMinn Co., Tenn, which lists:
Burris, W. Bent - 48 - born in Tennessee (farmer)
Burris, Lilly - 47- born in Tennessee
Burris, Jessie - 20 - born in Tennessee
Burris, Stella - 18 - born in Tennessee
Burris, Annie - 15 - born in Tennessee
Burris, Charlie - 14 - born in Tennessee
Burris, Louis V. - 12 - born in Tennessee
Not sure if this is him, but the names seemed to match with the article. Determining the d.o.b. from the census I found the cemetery records to New Zion Baptist Church from McMinn Co. Burial Records which list a Lewis V. Burris with dates of b. 8/4/1917 to 2/16/1966.

Looking for any information on the following individuals who were living in McMinn County, Tennessee in 1880:

John Sutton, b. abt 1825-1826, age 54-55, (Father)(Birthplace: Tennessee)

Mary (Burress/Burris) Sutton, b. abt 1825-1826, age 54-55, (Mother)(Birthplace: Tennessee)

Ann Sutton, b. abt 1858, age 22, (Daughter)(Birthplace: Tennessee)

Nancy C. Burress, b. abt 1797, age 83, (Father-in-Law)(Birthplace: Tennessee??)

**It is believed that "Jacob Burress" who is listed as a Boarder is actually some relation to "Mary (Burress/Burris) Sutton, but I don't know in which capacity.

**Nancy C. Sutton's name could possibly be "Nancy Carolin" or "Carolin". She is listed in the Monroe County, Tennessee 1870 Census as "Carolin Sutton".

**John Sutton's middle name could possibly be "Francis". I've located a few later documents with his name listed as "John F./Francis Sutton" I just need confirmation on this.

****John, Mary, Ann, Nancy Carolin, and Jacob are listed on the Monroe County, Tennessee 1870 Census. Evidently they all moved from Monroe County to McMinn County during the 1870's-1880's. They later moved to Morris Township, Texas County, Missouri.

Thanks,
James Sutton

I am searching for any information about John Presswood or any of his family. He married Ida FRITTS and died in 1903 leaving 3 young daughters, the youngest of which was my great-grandmother. He was living in McMinn County when he died. He is rumored to have had Cherokee heritage. I have some info on his wife, Ida FRITTS, and on my great-grandmother's descendents and I am willing to share info.
Denise

Their Reward: Freedom

Can any one tell me which Jacob Mooney this was. I have numerious Mooney ties in Tennessee and Arkansas but need to place this one.

1989 FALL
BLACK ARKANSANS
PAGE 6

Jacob Mooney’s Slaves Carry on Without Him for Years
Their Reward: Freedom
WILD CAT SHOALS— Around 1811 Jacob Mooney came to Arkansas by flatboat from McMinnville, Tennessee. With him were a man named McDonald, four black slaves, and four mysterious individuals said by old timers to have been “Melungeons” — supposedly descendants of a lost tribe of Israel that had settled in America before Columbus.
Be that as it may, Mooney’s boat must have been quite large, because according to an inventory in the hand of his descendants, he brought with him: “a large brindle cow, two black and white spotted pigs, six red hens and a speckled rooster, two guineas, one runty but friendly bull, one bushel dried yeast foam, twenty kinds of seed, one hogshead black powder, ten pounds of flint, an anvil, forge, one liquor still, one hundred bolts of cloth, one gross of needles and sewing thread and one demijohn of hops.”
Mooney and company poled up the White River to Wild Cat Shoals and conducted a lively trade from their boat while they built a store and two cabins. Constructing a bellows of tanned deer hides, the slaves managed to improvise a crude smelter where they fashioned bars of lead and occasionally of silver. Ned, Mooney’s black overseer, brewed a paw-paw brandy that proved a particularly popular trade item.
By fall, McDonald and Mooney were anxious to return to Tennessee. McDonald yearned to see his wife and Mooney was eager to acquire one. They loaded up their boat with lead, silver, furs, wild honey, and paw-paw brandy. Accompanied by the Melungeons, they set off down river as the first snow began to fall, leaving the trading post in the keeping of Ned and the other slaves.
When they returned to civilization, they discovered that the country was in the midst of the War of 1812. Both McDonald and Mooney joined up with Andrew Jackson, but McDonald died a few days before the Battle of New Orleans. Mooney married shortly after his return from the fighting.
Nine years passed before he returned to Arkansas. Mooney feared the worst, but at his first stop at an inn near the mouth of the White River, he was served what was reported to be the finest French brandy. He recognized it as once as none other than Ned’s paw-paw liquor.
Later he stopped in Liberty at the home of Major Wolf, a famous trader and Indian agent, who assured him that Mooney’s slaves had all taken wives among the local Indians and had hired a man named Hightower to pretend to be their owner.
Mooney would write in his journal: “Late yesterday I came in sight of home. I could hardly believe my eyes. The store was much larger, besides I counted ten new buildings, good sized fields full of growing crops and little (black children) swarming everywhere. I landed the boat and went ashore, leaving my hands to secure it. Everything is as beautiful as we hope heaven is going to be. A comely Indian lass was tending the store. When I asked about lodging for the night, Ned’s voice called from the back room, “Is that you, Master Jake?” We fell into each other’s arms and shouted, like we had just professed religion.”
Jacob Mooney was so moved by the loyalty of his slaves he had Major Wolf draw up papers granting them their freedom. Mooney continued to commute between Arkansas and Tennessee and did not settle in Arkansas permanently until the death of his wife in 1832. By then his former slaves, now free men, had either died or migrated westward with their Indian families.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Hazel

I am currently trying to determine the family of my gr-gr Grandfather, George Henry White. I have narrowed the search down to two George Whites--one in McMinn County and one in Monroe, but haven't had much luck finding either of their families into the 1900s in order to cross one or the other off my list of possibles.

If anyone has any information they could share on either of these White families I would greatly appreciate it. Here is the info I have from the 1880 Census:

MCMINN FAMILY:
James (b. 1841) + Jane (b. 1845)
William White (b. 1862)
John White (b. 1873)
George White (b. 1876)
Malista White (b. 1879)

MONROE FAMILY:
Anderson White (b. 1856) + Marthy (b. 1854)
Polly White (b. 1874) (Poss. also known as Mary? - unconfirmed)
George White (b. 1876)

Richard Lawson and Mary Campbell - Need Info

I've exhausted most research and now hit my brick wall. Richard Lawson is my GGG Grandfather through his daughter Elizabeth Jane (Betsey) Lawson. Betsey was born in McMinn in 1833 and married my GG Grandfather James A Carroll in 1849. I'm desperately seeking Richard's father and James A Carroll's father. These are the most difficult lines I've ever encountered and could use any help at all. Between December of 1850 and 1852 they all move to Bradley County, TN (where I'm from originally). Richard is on the 1836 McMinn Tax list with many other Lawson's. Since a lot of records in Bradley were burned during a fire...I'm stuck. Thank to all that can contribute.

Regards,
Kathy

Looking for any information at all - a Will, siblings, court cases, anything for John Kennedy. He must have died prior to 1830 as I found his wife Malinda (Broyles) Kennedy living next door to her father Daniel Broyles in the 1830 census. Did John died in McMinn? Did he have siblings in McMinn? His childeren were Daniel, Susannah, John, Margaret and Isabella and another unknown female.
Are the James and Moses who are in the county in 1830 related to my John who was born abt. 1790 probably in White Co. TN?

I don't know exactly what you are seeking, however I am related to the Hughes/Helton clan. My grandfather was the son of Brud Hughes, John Hughes, son. He was born out of wedlock by Mary Gilbert of Stockton MO, and was later adopted by William Henry and Clara Victory Burchett Putnam.

Actually, if I have my facts correct, John Jesse was either the father or grandfather of said John Hughes from the Collins MO area. I hope this information is of interest to you.

Jonnie Thompson

I'm looking for a marriage record from McMinn Co. from 1848 between Samuel C. Cook and Jane Young. I have a marriage date of 25 March 1848. I'm living overseas and doing all my research via internet. Could anyone point me in the right direction to find this record online or how to write for a copy of it? I'm hoping it will give some clues so I can go further with my Cook (or Cooke) family tree.

Thanks!
Erinn

I'm trying to locate the farm of my 3g-grandfather Thomas Parsons. Here's the description from Deed Book Vol. B, Nov 1820–Aug 1836, p. 226:

No 517 Thomas Parson this day enters as occupant enterer agreeably to law the south east quarter of section 25, township 3", range 2" west of the meridian, in the County of McMinn, Hiwassee district, beginning on the south east corner of said quarter.
July 28, 1824 160 acres

Or can someone tell me where I can obtain such a map? I wrote the McMinn County clerk some time ago but never heard back.

I'd greatly appreciate any help.
Noel Parsons
I have been studying families in McMinn County for about five years. My direct family lines include CULTON, WEIR, WEAR, THOMPSON and WILSON. I have information on collateral lines including BARNETT, BURK, GRIGSBY, SHERRILL, and ELLIS. Some of these folks stayed in McMinn County, but there was a migration to southwest Missouri (Barry / Stone Counties) in 1851-2. It included almost all of these families.
Thomas Jefferson Baker

I've posted before and thought I'd take another run at things. My great grandfather Thomas Jefferson Baker was born
in 1838 and I believe it was in McMinn County. He lived there up through the end of the Civil War and then he and his family moved to Texas. He served with the 9th and 10th
Tennessee Cavalry (CSA)and is buried in Cromwell, Oklahoma,
having died in 1928 or so. His brother was James Baker who
lost an arm in the Civil War and also moved to Texas. Most of the above is family oral history and the only part I know
for a fact is his death and location as I've been to the cemetery. Any info or relatives I may not know about. Let me
know. Thanks in advance...

In 1830, Elijah is enumerated very close to our Alexander Casteel in McMinn Co TN.

Elijah and Patience seem to have had at least three children:
James F. Casteel b abt 1830
John Casteel b abt 1841
Rebecca L. Casteel b abt 1842 m. John McCurdy and had Margaret E., Sarah F., and John T,.McCurdy.

In 1830, they are in McMinn Co TN, page 184
In 1840, they are in McMinn Co TN, page 107
In 1850, they are in McMinn C. TN, page 324
In 1860, they are in Murray Co GA, page 24
In 1870, apparently Elijah has died, and Patience is living with the McCurdy family, in Whitfield Co GA, page 130a&b

The information above is everything I know about these people -- I can't provide more information about them.
However, I'm asking for help in determining the parents of Elijah.

Thanks.

Jim Patrick
I am looking for more information on Eli and his family. His mother was Mary Dalton Hitson and father was Robert Hitson. He had a sister named Selina who married David Dalton. Robert is not found in the 1860 census anywhere and it has been told he died in 1865, I assume in the Civil War, as he is not found in any of the census records after that. Mary and Eli are found in the 1880, but I can't seem to find them in the 1870 census. I had been told it was the 14th district in McMinn Co, but noone seems to know. Does any have any information on them??
