I am trying to document this David Wells family. This David Wells d. 6 Feb 1843 PER this sworn statement by his (?2nd?) wife Elizabeth Hargis. this David d. Feb 1843 is apparently buried next to Christian Wells in the Wells cemetery (Wells farm in Maury)PER 'Maury County, Tennessee Cemeteries with Genealogical and Historical Notes, VOL II' Compiled by Fred Lee Hawkins. this David & Christian are listed as the parents of 'a' Samuel Wells b. 25 Feb 1809 who is also buried in this cemetery.

All leads would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Debra
~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maury County Tennessee Chancery Court Records 1810-1860, VOL 1, 2965, Jill K. Garrett & Marise P. Lightfoot.-------------Wells vs Wells, 1836.-------------Elizabeth Wells, the wife of David Wells, Senr... that some 12 or 13 years since she intermarried with David Wells, Sr., then and since a citizen of Maury... that said Wells had been previously married and that by his first wife he had Polly since married to Davis Mitchell; Nancy since married to Elisha Davis; Samuel Wells; Jane since married to Hugh C. Caruthers; Robert Wells; David Wells; Will G. Wells; his children, all of whom except Hugh C. Caruthers and Elisha Davis, that last two of whom are citizens of Giles Co., are citizens of Maury... that at time of marriage to said David Wells, he was possessed of some 15-20 negroes, a quantity of land in Maury and considerable other property and she further states that for a number of years her husband has been addicted to the habits of intoxication so much so that he has became exceedingly unpleasant as a companion... she tried to be tolerant and lived with him... he is now trying to force her to leave the house. She then shows how he devised all his property among his children (states what each received) so she would receive nothing. ---Depositions: Mary B. Davis (2 Sept 1837) aged about 30: since David and Elizabeth old folks, shame they couldn't get along. John W. Smith witness for defendant. Allen H. Bobo witness for defense. Mrs. Mary Amis: Samuel Davis; Mrs. Sabra Toombs -- states David & Elizabeth Wells lived about 1 1/2 - 2 miles apart before marriage for 3-4 years. Deposition of Mary A. Wells, ... widow of Thomas Wells, son of old man Wells ... Elizabeth's daughter married Samuel Wells ... William G. is David's youngest child ... Elizabeth and David had no children by their marriage. A.D. and Mary were married in 1821. A.D. mentions Elizabeth's children. William Hargis of Fayette Co., Tenn.: "Mrs. Wells is a sister of mine. She had lived in that county about two years, but not more than two of three months in that neighborhood ... her children John, Henry, Nancy and Prudence stayed with her at Mr. Wells ..." . Samuel Wells states he is son-in-law of Elizabeth and son of David. Court found David Wells guilty - ordered separate maintance of $125 per year. Note signed by Elizabeth Wells: "David Wells, my husband, departed this life 6 Feb 1843."

Hello list, I am searching for the death date and buriel of Eugene D Hunter b. cMay 1857 in Maury County and his first wife Mary Alice Jameson b. c1856 in Maury County.

Eugene married Mary Alice Jameson on 20 Nov 1881 in Maury County. Mary Alice must have died before Nov. 1892. Mary Alice was the daughter of William Jameson and Mary Elizabeth Kirby. To date I have found no buriel information in the cemetery books by Fred Hawkins.

Eugene D Hunter next married Jennie N Porter Nov. 1892. They had several children together.

It appears that Mary Alice Jameson's sister Georgiana Jameson married James Mitchell "Mitt" Hunter, brother of Eugene D Hunter.

Does anyone have death and buriel information on Eugene D Hunter and Mary Alice Jameson and anything on their children?

Thank you,

Ginny Merritt Rountree
Query: John Stimpson Case Family, 1870s, Maury Co. TN

Hello all,

I am tracing relatives who were in Maury County, (Middle)TN in the early 1870s and before.

Here are the names:

John Stimpson Case m. Zarita Ann Dawson Smith
1. Lucius Virgile Case b. 2 Jun 1871 in Hampshire, Maury Co.TN
2. Rosville Stimpson Case b. 28 Jan 1873 in Pulaski, Maury Co. TN
3. Eolia Erlene Case (m. James A. Barker), b. 1 Apr. 1875. I have incomplete records on which county she was born in, only that she was born in TN.

I am looking in particular for information on John Stimpson Case's birth information. He would have been born sometime 1830-1850. I am trying to trace his parents, and to do that I need to confirm whether he was born in TN, KY, or NC. I am also looking for migration information - when the family left TN for the TX panhandle. This definitely happened in Lucius' generation. Family lore has it that Mr. J.S. Case disappeared on a trip to somewhere in TN to settle a land parcel deal, and never returned home. According to 1880 census info provided me by a kind stranger by the name of Nancy (Thank you again!), Zarita Ann, aka Annie was remarried to a Marion Elleson(Ellison?) and all the Case children mentioned above were with her. Descendants of Lucius relocated in Hall, Armstrong, and Jones counties of Texas.

Anyone with info that strongly connects with what I have laid down here are encouraged to email me.

Kind regards,
Wendy Case
Third great-grandaughter of John Stimpson Case
Looking for info on John Baily, probably born in the Mt. Pleasant area and brother/half brother to Charles (Charlie) Douglas.

Charlie was born in Maury County in 1877 and died there in 1953. He lived in Texas and California between 1900 and 1945.

We are pretty certain that John Baily also moved to North Texas or Oklahoma around 1900 and may have remained in that area throughout his life. We know nothing of the birth parents, so I'm hoping the 2 pictures I've posted will look familiar to someone. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Lightfoot titled:

Maury County Tennessee
Wills and Settlements
1807-1824
and
1820 Census.

It is a wonderful resourse and was available on Ancestry.com. Now, I need to find the actual wills and inventories which the book noted. It is put together refering to a book by alphabet, such as Book C. with a page number.

Does anyone know where I now write in Maury county to get copies of the actual Wills and Inventories?

Thank you.

Sandy

Looking for information on Alfred Nichols married to Eleanor (?). In 1850 their children were: James, 11, Jeremiah, 9, Harvey, 8, Newton, 7, Nathan, 5, Manerva, 3, Hugh, 1 and Dansilla Nichols, 31, living with them. I believe Dansilla was Alfred's sister. In the 1860 Maury Co. Census, Alfred is not listed, but another child Sarah , 9 is listed.

In 1850, Green Duke is living next to the Nichols. Green Duke was married to Mary Exaline Nichols. They had a child, William, 2 in 1850, but Mary must have died before the census was taken. Ann Nichols, 62 is living with Green and Wm. Duke. She is believed to the the mother of Mary, Alfred, & Dansilla.

In the 1860 census, Rebecca Edgior (sp) is listed with Eleanor Nichols. In the 1850 census, John Edgin's family is listednest door to the Alfred Nichols Family. The writing is bad and hard to read. I believe it is Edgin. Could Eleanor be an Edgin and Rebecca be her sister?

Any information on any of these families would be appreciated.

Carolyn
Thomas Baker and Rachel Holly, Maury, TN, 1818-1880

Hi,
I am looking for a death date for Thomas and Rachel (Holly) Baker. Thomas was born about 1818 in Tennessee and Rachel was born about 1813 in Tennessee. They were married in 1843 in Maury Co., TN.

They had one son, Robert, born about 1844 and possibly a daughter, R.E., born about 1848 who probably died as a child.

They are listed in Maury County, TN is the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. The 1850 census also lists Mary A. Holley, age 19, and Jesse B. Holley, age 15. These could be siblings of Rachel or perhaps these are children of a previous marriage.

The 1880 census is confusing because there is a list of children who are said to be the son or daughter of Thomas, but I think they may have actually been the children of his son, Robert.

If anyone has any information on this family I would love to hear from you.

Thanks, Yvonne Curry

No, not a law firm.

Three interrelated families appear to have moved from Central Virginia (Prince Edward, Charlotte, Cumberland counties) to Maury County 1836-1840.

In Charlotte County, VA, in 1836, Peyton Baughan married Elizabeth Jordan. Then in 1838, John A. Jordan (sometimes Jourdan) married Lucy Baughan. And in 1839, William Bigger married Mary Dennis Baughan.

In the 1840 census for Maury County, Peyton Baughan was age 20 to 30, as was his wife; with two males and one female under 5. William Bigger was 30 to 40, with a wife 20 to 30, and one boy under 5. John A. Jordan was age 20 to 30, living with his father John P. Jordan (50 to 60), his wife likely either 20 to 30 or 15 to 20.

Seeking any references to these families between 1836 and 1850 in Maury County records.

Spelling variations may include Jordan, Jourdan, Bigger(s), Baughan, Baughn, and sometimes Vaughan.

I am looking for two marriages. Both for the same man. The man is Royden Chanoine. The first marriage was between 1961 and 1964. The wife's first name was Mattie. I don't know her last name. The second was between 1965 and possibly 1975. The wife's name was Jo. I believe her maiden name was Stagg. They were married either in Maury or Lawrence Counties. Any help would be appreciated. You can reach me at jeansigman@msn.com. Thanks.

Children of Bejamin and Elizabeth Wilkes---Washington Lafayette Jefferson Wilkes?

My grandmother, Frances Elois Wilkes Beard, was the daughter of
John Martin Wilkes unknown
and Anna May West b. 14 Mar 1885 in TN and d. 20 Feb. 1967, Columbus, MS at my grandmother's home.
My grandmother had a brother John and a sister Eunice that I remember. She was from the Dyer or Dyersburg, TN area.

John Martin Wilkes was most likely the grandson of
Washington Lafayette Jefferson Wilkes*--b.28 Aug 1824 in Maury County TN d:18 Jun 1887 in Maury County TN.
(*His parents were Washington Lafayette Jefferson Wilkes and Elizabeth Mann)
and
Jane Crockett Love--b.28 Dec 1826 in TN and d. 22 Apr 1885 in Maury County TN. They were married in 1844. Thier other children were

1845-1928 John Love Wilkes
1847-1910 Mary K Wilkes
1850-1921 Susan A Wilkes
1853-1921 Ella Jane Wilkes
1856-1930 William L Wilkes
1869-1947 Sallie Bett Wilkes
John Martin Wilkes

I am thinking that John Martin is the son of one of the children of Washington and Jane Wilkes because I have reason to believe (but not confirm) that he was born in the 1880's, past childbearing age for Jane. He and Anna Mae's first child was born in 1907, Eunice, then John in 1914 and my grandmother in 1918.
Either Eunice or John had a daughter named Wilma who was possibly born in the 1940's.

I am trying to trace this branch of Wilkes, as well as Anna Mae West's relatives. Can anyone link me up with sources? Thanks in advance.

Walker family - early 1800s

Various internet sources show that one Washington Walker (probably George Washington Walker, and therefore possibly listed as George Walker in records) died 12 Nov 1814 in Maury County. No source is given.

On 28 Nov 1842, Agness Walker, widow of James Walker of Cumberland Co., VA, executed a power of attorney to Michael Lancaster of Maury county, TN, to recover "from the estate of Washington Walker decd all legacies ... as are now due or owing to me from the said Washington Walker's estate and more especially one fourth part of Jane and Judith Walker who were Legatees of the said Washington Walker decd."

If someone has come across records of any of the persons mentioned above, it would be greatly appreciated if that information could be posted. Is there an estate record? Did he own land? If so, what became of the land?

I am guessing (and only guessing) that Agness, Jane and Judith were sisters of Washington, because Agness is shown as over 45 in 1820 (born before 1775), narrowed to born 1760-70 in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. She would appear be too old to have been a daughter. It also suggests that Jane and Judith had died without heirs as had Washington, leaving Agness and three other surviving siblings (hence her 1/4 portion). But this is wild speculation without facts from someone in Maury County.

John Middleton Maury County Tn,

John was my 6th great grandfather

I have seen many websites and had many emails from people saying John Middleton Maury County Tn, Was the son of Richard IV Middleton. Babados line of Middletons

But how could this be? DAR Records state that Richard IV Middleton did have a son named John, but he died in Chesterfield Dist. SC 1800.

John Middleton of Maury county Tn, was in Greensville County Sc, in 1800.and in Maury County by 1820.

There is a book by Marise Parrish Lightfoot called Let the Drums Roll: Veterans and Patriots of the Revolutionary War who Settled in Maury County, Tennessee. In her book she writes.

John Middleton, Senior, b. between 1750 & 1760, Ireland and migrated to South Carolina before the
Revolutionary War. He received payment for militia duty in South Carolina during the years 1779 and

1782. He executed his will on April 17, 1831, and died between that date and June 23, 1831, when the will

was probated in Maury County, Tennessee. In his will he named his wife, Rebecca and two sons, Alfred and Drury.

Also I have found more false information. There is a old family story about John being in Lee's legion in the Revolutionary War.

I went to DAR with this and found out this not to be true, There was a John Middleton in lee's but he died way before our John Middleton did in Sc.

So who was John Middleton 1760- 1831 Maury County Tn,
If you have any new Information to share please Email me at

willun98@yahoo.com

Erik Middleton

I am doing research on the family of Benjamin Jones who settled in Fayette Co, Illinois in 1821.
In the 1811 tax list there is listed a Benjamin Jones in Maury County, Tennessee. Does anyone have any information on a Benjamin Jones and family? By 1810 Benjamin should have had one son born in 1804. His name is Bowling Jones. Another son was born in 1811. Both sons were born in Tennessee.
Sometime before 1818 the Jones Family moved to Washington County, Illinois.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks
Gerald Jones in Illinois

I am looking for information concerning the Thomas Powell who died in Maury County in 1815, leaving wife Flora, and children, Elisha, Zepporrah, Flora and Sarah. The wife, Flora, eventually moved to Missouri where she died at the age of 100+. The daughter Zepporrah married Theofilus Jones in Maury County and later moved to Giles Cunty. The daughter Flora first married an Armstrong and then later Daniel Jones. She moved to Missouri. The daughter Sarah married a Pucket and moved to Missouri. The son Elisha MAY be my ggrandfather, Samuel Elisha Powell, moving to Lincoln County, then McNairy County, then Texas. I am not sure about Elisha and very much want to investigate this possibility.

Anyone with information about these people please reply.

Thanks,
Jerry Powell
I would like to get an obituary for him--he died a little before January 30, 1904 in Missouri. I was hoping that an obituary would exist in Columbia since he was so well known there.
Information about parents of Wm A. Norman and Mary Ann Gibson in TN in the early 1800s.

I am looking for information about William Allen NORMAN b. 1823 in Maury Co or Bedford Co, TN and his wife Mary Ann GIBSON b. 1829 in Bedford Co, TN. They came from TN to Greene Co MO between 1856 and 1859. Wm A died in 1895 and Mary Ann (his first wife) died in 1879, both in Greene Co MO. They are my 2nd great grandparents on my maternal grandmother Hattie Alice Orr’s side. I would also like evidence that about their parents. For Wm A. Norman I believe they are Robert Potter Norman b. about 1777 in NC and died in 1855 in Perry TN and Martha COFFEE b. about 1795 in GA and died in 1852. For Mary Ann Gibson I believe they are John M Gibson b. 1804 in NC and Martha HARPER b. 1808 in Bedford TN and died in 1849. Again I have no evidence that they are indeed the correct parents. Any evidence will be most appreciated. I would also like to know who the grandparents, etc. were of Wm A and Mary Ann.

I believe the children of Robert P Norman and Martha Coffee are listed below. Any confirmation of this would be appreciated.
Thomas N. NORMAN b: 25 DEC 1817
James C. NORMAN b: 18 APR 1818
Mary Jane NORMAN b: 26 SEP 1819
Eliza E. NORMAN b: 29 NOV 1821
William Allen NORMAN b: 4 AUG 1823
Elizabeth P. NORMAN b: 29 DEC 1827
Martha A. NORMAN b: 26 OCT 1829
Robert Porter NORMAN b: 16 MAR 1836

Finally I would like to communicate by email with anyone who has any of the above folks as ancestors.
Many thanks, Bert Waits waitsb@math.ohio-state.edu
Greetings!
I am trying to help a friend start her Maury County genealogy. I found her ancestors in the 1870 Maury County census up to the 1930 census. Before that, they are slaves in Maury County. My questions are: Were slaves buried in a certain part of Maury County? Are there any records of the burials? Are there any slave records of marriages available?
I believe that once they were freed they took on the surname of the slave owner and that's why there are Stevenson's who are listed as white and Stevenson's who are listed as black in the census.
Any help for Maury County research is appreciated!!!
Thanks!

Several of Sarah's siblings married in Maury County, TN, but I have not located a marriage record for her. I located several Webbs in Maury County, but not a Jeremiah. Would anyone know if they died young or moved somewhere? I haven't located records for them. I believed at first that the Jeremiah Webb family in White County, TN was them but that Jeremiah Webb married a Sarah Copeland.

Turney, Smizer 1818 Maury Co Tennessee

Eve Turney born 1780 Shenandoah Co Virginia, d/o Daniel Turney (b 1758 VA) and Susan Matheny.
About 1787 - 1789 the family moved to Kentucky.
1800 Eve Turney married in Kentucky to John Smizer (born 1778 in Maryland). They moved to Natchez - think two of their children were born there. Then they moved to near Columbia, Maury Co Tn. Bought land ca 1818, began to built their house ca 1820 - house named Fairmount.

John Smizer died 1848 Columbia, Eve died 1844. They are supposed to be buried in the Smizer-Booker cemetery on property they owned near their home.

Anyone working on this family? I have 3 of their sons in 1850 census for Maury Co TN, 1860 census they are in Arkansas.

Would like to know more about their house.

Also - who is the Henry Turney in Maury Co TN records, often with John Smizer? I think I have his 1812 military records which say he is from Smith Co TN where my Turneys were located. Who was this Maury Co Henry Turney's father? He eventually moved to Panola Co Texas where he is buried.

Mary hlm@qtm.net

DANIEL GLOVER is my ggg grandfather. The ancestry of DANIEL GLOVER has not been found, and it is thought he was born between 1775 and 1780. At the time he married MARY WESTMORELAND in Mecklenburg Co., VA, there was a JOHN GLOVER and wife ELIZABETH, living in that county.

On 21 Jan. 1797, JOHN GLOVER of Brunswick Co., purchased 60 acres in Mecklenburg Co. from WILLIAM THOMASON. On 1 Dec 1807, JOHN GLOVER of Mecklenburg County sold the above tract to DANIEL THOMAS of Brunswick County. (Mec. Co., DB No. 9, p.293; DB No. 13, p.462).

During the residence of JOHN GLOVER in Mecklenburg County (1797-1807), there were three Glover marriages, possibly children of JOHN GLOVER & ELIZABETH NANCE, as follows:

(1) SALLY GLOVER m. CHARLES ROTTENBERRY, 24 Dec 1798

(2) NANCY GLOVER m. WILLIS McKINNEY, 25 Feb 1801

(3) DANIEL GLOVER m. MARY WESTMORELAND, 8 Nov 1806 (their daughter was MARTHA W. GLOVER (b. abt 1808, Brunswick Co., VA, d. abt 1870, Perry Co., TN) m. ALLEN B. EVANS (b. abt 1807, d. abt 1880, Perry Co., TN), I have more info on the descendants of Martha & Allen B. Evans ... wanna exchange?

I have a Mary Polk Eastin littlefield that died in nashville in 1911 according to her D/c she was buried in columbia. Her obit which I just received says her body was taken to ashwood near Columbia and interment in the old polk burial grounds. Could someone tell me where that is?
She was named after General Polk I believe.
I have also been unsuccessful in finding her grave. I was hoping maybe her parents where buried there also. Sarah Amanda galloway Eastin and John D Eastin. I have found the Eastin name spelled eastern/easton/Eaton etc etc so any help would be appreciated.
or lead me in the right direction. i have also heard there is an ashwod in rutherford county but was hoping the old Polk burial grounds would narrow it down.
kristeen galloway
kg1249@earthlink.net

call all descendants of Rawley or Raleigh Madding (1789-1855) !

Hello Madding/Roberson cousins,
The grave marker of Rawley Madding (1785-1855) was recently discovered in an overgrown, abandoned cemetery in the Bailey Springs area near Florence, Alabama. Rawley was born in Pittsylvania Co. VA, served in the War of 1812 and moved to Maury Co. in the 1820s where he lived until his death. He had 19 living children at the time of his death through marriages to Sally Mays and Sally Bridgeman. Many of these children ended up in W. TN and W. KY including my own 3rd grandmother Anne T. Madding Roberson (wife of Wm. "Billy" Roberson) and many descendants lived (or still live) in the Obion Chapel area between Troy and Hornbeak, with other groups in Lake Co., Fulton Co. KY etc... A young Eagle Scout candidate, Davis Faulkner and his family, friends etc.. in the Florence, AL area are cleaning up, refencing, marking and preserving the cemetery and are planning to hold a dedication ceremony this Memorial Day. They are also looking for funds to help in the restoration of the cemetery (particularly refencing). Please contact me if you are interested in this project. Attached is a photo of Rawley's marker (long thought to have been buried in Maury Co. in an unmarked grave). This is a great project and they have already obtained historic cemetery designation from the State of Alabama. Only about 4 graves are still marked in this cemetery after 160 or so hard years! Help preserve our ancestor's memory for future generations!
I have a small packet of info that I can snail mail if interested.
This link will also take you to my posted info at the rootsweb world connect project:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dajones&I11.x=...
Thanks, David Jones in Richmond, MI, 3rd great grandson of Billy and Anne Madding Roberson

Does anyone happen to have information on an Edward Cole I see in the 1820 and 1830 census in Maury Co.? He and his family were gone from the county by 1840 to parts unknown. He was born 1780 - 1790 if the 1830 is accurate.

I have a horrible mess with my Cole family in Giles Co., TN just to south of Maury, and I have a single land record that references an Edward Cole who appears in no censuses or any other resources I've found in the county. Obviously I'm wondering if this Edward in Maury Co. could be the same one. If I can find him in the 1850 census and beyond, his information might shed some light on my Coles.

If anyone is feeling philanthropic and would be willing to look in any reference books they have to see if he might referenced somehow with any additional information at all, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks much.

Jane Gilbert
Related to and researching just about every surname in Giles Co. : )
